AME MENTAL PARCEL FOREWORD This is intended as an overdue AME Letter. We have called it a Mental-Gram and have thrown in a few mental items for good measure. The Mental-grams are intended as late notes on all AME releases. As the name implies, a mental item more often than not is purely mental. That is to say it is only a thought and has to pass the test of presentation through repeated performances in order to become polished. Subscribers to the AME series often write in with improvements on AME effects. We hope to pass on these ideas to you via the AME Mental-Grams. Your comments and improvements, criticisms and historical notes and corrections on all AME publications are always welcomed at the AKE office and due credit is extended.

The wallet can be shown to be ungimmicked. A mentalist's wallet is usually loaded with big bills, or should be so you do not allow anyone to stick his fingers into it. The glassine window in the wallet has a cut out slot so that the cards can be pushed with the thumb on the left edge to avoid he cards from becoming separated. The move can be done while the wallet faces the performer since there can be no doubt that there is no exchange of cards due to the signature. The Penn wallet has many other usesJ to exchange cards for example. It can also exchange one bill for another or the page from a paper back for another, folded of course. The In-N-Outer Boxes These boxes are quite popular with magicians today. They form an enigma since everyone knows that a nest of two boxes cancanot be reversed, the outer box can never become the inner box. On this premise , H. Penn has applied his brain power to convert the principle into a mental effect as follows, In a

Quandr~

by H. Penn

~FFECT, Performer displays two sets of nested boxes. He opens the boxes and shows that the inside boxes have a color spot painted on them. One box has a red spot. The other a blue spot. The boxes are then mixed. The inside box of one set is placed inside the other set, etc. Performer then makes a perdeiction as to what box the spectator will choose. Performer states that although there is only a 50-50 chance of being wrong he is willing to stake his reputation on the outcome. Performer's prediction proves correct every time.

METHOD, For this effect, you must have two sets of In-n-Outer boxes all of which are of the same color. That is. The inside box must be of the same ~lor as the outside box and both sets must also be of the same color. Two of the boxes have a red spot painted on the inside bottom and the other two have a blue spot. WORKING, Patter about how the boxes are finely machined so that one is just a bit smaller than the other. Show a red spot and a blue spot on the inside bottom of each inside box. Next you must maneuver the boxes so that the two red spots end up in the inside of both sets. Then simply predict that the box chosen by the spectator will be the box with the red spot.

J MENTAL PARCEL

AN AL MANN EXCLUSIVE

In a Quandry .••.•.•. cont ....• ~hen handling the boxes for the purpose of transposing them undetected, the boxes should be place one in front of the other instead of side by side. This amazing principle of the In-n-Outer boxes has many uses in mentalism. A message can be made to appear or a message can be exchanged. The monte move can be done with J set of boxes, etc. The reader should keep in mind that there are many more effects that can be done in this manner. What about a similar nest of thre~ boxes instead of just two? Something could be made to appear in the middle of a set of three boxesl etc. or in the inner most box.

The Nu-Way Force by H. Penn Here is an idea that may find favor with many. It utilizes the eas.y-off gummed labels as shown in Fig. 2 (actual size). Mr. Penn uses these in a variety of ways as follows. As a force. Performer secretly places a 'dot' label on the card he wishes to force. The deck is Fig. 2 then shUffled and cut several times and the spec is given one of the labels and is told to place the label on any card while he cuts the deck under the table. The Secret is that the performer turns the deck face up so that the spectator places the label on the face of a card. Naturally when the deck is inspected it is found that the force card is the only one that has a label on its back. The effect can of course be presented as a prediction. Going a step further. write a prediction as follows. "The. card that you will choose will be the only card with a label on its back." Amazingly enough this effect can be done impromptu provided you have some labels in your pocket and it can be done with any bodl~s deckl METHOD. Take the stranger deck and say that you are going to apply some magic to it and turn your back and pretend that you are doing something. Actually you take out one label and wetting the tip of lettmiddle finger place the label on it gum side up .. Turn around holding the deck face-up in your left hand co vp rlng the label, of course, fan the deck and tell spectator to just point to any card and emphasize the fact that he has an obsolute free choice. Cut the deck at his chosen card. leaving the card at the bottom of the top cut. put on the label secretly by pressing the finger tip to it and the trick is done. HE HAS CHOSEN THK ONLY CARD WITH A LABEL ON ITl

The Coincidence effect. By the same token as the above effect, the spectator can be asked to place a label on his chosen card and the performer predicts the action as a coincidence. A message can be written on the label to add mystery to it. STABBING THE DECK. Use a kitchen knife and attach a label to the underside of the knife with saliva. Tell spectator to stick the point of the knife anywhere into the deck, then take the knife and stick it in all the way so that the label sticks to the back of the lower portion. THE BOOK TEST. Place a label before hand on the page you wish to force. Give the spectator another label that has a bit of wax on its face. Have spectator place the label anywhere into the book under the table. The wax on the label locks in that page and the only label that shows is the one on the force pagel If by chance the spectator places the label on the same page then you have a miracle indeed. TH~ CUT FORCE. The cut force has been covered in other writtingsJ The Third Ecstasy has a force that allows the spectator to cut the deck in his own hands while covered with a hankerchief while the classic Handkerchief Force can be found in Greater Magic page 195. Both of these forces can be used in combination with the label forces above.

PRESID~TAL

Had the pleasure of meeting an enterprising young man by the name of Richard Cawolsky at the Craig Neier one day convention (1978) in New Jersey. Richard is the inventor of a number of new principles and effects in magic. He showed me an effect with dollar bills that he calls "Odd Half-Hole." It is a paper effect done with dollar bills instead of just plain paper. With mentalism always in my mind I told Richard that the principle could be applied to a mental stunt and he told me to go ahead with it and develope it. So the following effect appears here with his permission. EFFECT. Performer places a one dollar bill on the table faqe up showing the picture of the ~resident. Next he takes out a round white label and cements 1t over the picrture on the dollar bill. He tells the spectator to think of a word, question or whatever and to write it in the label on the bill secretly and to turn the bill face-down when finished. Performer takes a second bill and places the two bills to-

THE THINKING MACHINES, In a recent TV show, a celebrity personality goofed doing a number prediction with various members of the audience. Should have read "Alpha and Omega" in the Thinking Machines. Mentalist Mario Graziosi of New Jersey stuns his audiences with it. PIECES-OF-EIGHT, Do it without the scis.ors. Simply tear open the envelopes with your fingers. The gimmicks must also be torn with the fingers. - The newspaper predicting stunt is found on page 10 disguised as a design duplication. MASTER SLATE SECRETS II 'The Spirit of the Faberlands' is a baffler. It can also be done with three slates. The third slate is a dummy, blank on both sides. The dummy is displayed in the left hand and the other two slates in the right hand. both hands are turned around to show all slates blank. The dummy is then placed on top and both sides openly cleaned, etc. Fixatif can be removed with nail-polish remover. "Master Slate Secrets Part lIon pocket slates is the greatest." Craige Snader, Mexico City. Master Slate Secrets III, Mindreader Allemann got gasps from the ladies at the shows at the Magic Castle three times a night closing with the Miracle Slate Deluxe (the 16-digit effect). This slate was designed by Al Mann from a Gerald Kosky idea, built by Harry G. Franke of Pa. and improved by G. W. Kirkendall of Columbus. (see page 30.) Magician Jerry Fulton of Canada baffled an audience of mathematicians with 'Addithots' (page 32). (1979) Harry G. Franke of Pa. is the originator of the Broadcasting Slate. He designed this slate in 1961 and later showed it to Alan Shaxon of England. Alan then released it to the Swami, vol. 1, no. 8. Mr. Leland F. Remington of Worcester Mass., passed away on Feb. 8, 1978. He was the inventer and builder of the fabulous 5-in-l Slate. Only twelve of these slates were made. Ray Hafler and your author own one each so there are 10 more gathering dust somewhere. On Oct. 16, 1972, Mr. Remington gave manufacturing rights to AME for the 5-in-l Slate. MASt!R-SLlTESECRETS IV. 1/20/79, Received a most interesting letter from David A.S. Howarth of London. David is the inventor of the modern 'blind' slate. David came by this idea independe~: lYe His method was published in the Linking Ring for March 1967 titled "The Ultimate Prediction Slate." The first slates as designed by David used a swivel flap and were built by Ken Brooke. Later David im~roved the slate using the 'blind' principle. Ken Brooke called ~t "The Nemo Slate." Today this slate is built by Mr. Howarth and sold by The Taurus Magic Supply Co. of 146 Walmersl.y Road, Bury, Lascs., England for $1501 called The Ultimate Prediction Slate.
