here’s nothing quite as awe-inspiring as getting up close and personal with a 10,000-year-old, million-tonne leviathan of ice. And there’s no better place to watch juggernaut icebergs than in the heart of famed Iceberg Alley on the northeast coast of Newfoundland. The term “iceberg” probably originates from the Dutch term “ijsberg”, which means ice hill. The typical iceberg found along the northeast coast rivals a 15-story office building in height, though smaller “growlers” and car-sized “bergy bits” are common as well. Central Newfoundland welcomes visitors from around the world eager to enjoy nature in its mightiest form. Sea kayaks, boat tours and coastal hikes all provide excellent berg-watching opportunities.

Bergy Bits • It takes an iceberg about two to three years to reach the island of Newfoundland from Greenland – a distance of 1,800 nautical miles. • In 1975, the schooner “Caledonia” was lost 9 miles off Cape Fogo but her crew of 82 were saved when they managed to clamber onto an iceberg. • The Titanic sank in 1912, 350 miles off the coast of Newfoundland after hitting an iceberg. • There was once a murder on an iceberg. • A secret World War II project (Habbakuk) planned to manufacture icebergs for use as aircraft carriers. www.AdventureCentralNewfoundland.ca

f whale watching is something you’re interested in, don’t miss out on some of the finest the world has to offer. Twenty-two species of whales can be found along the coast of Central Newfoundland, the Humpback and the Minke being the most common. And there are a few of our friends that are anxious to meet you. Five thousand Humpbacks visit our waters from May to September. From the shores of Terra Nova National Park to the coastal reaches of the Great Whale Coast, these mighty mammals will take your breath away. Whale Facts • The world’s largest population of feeding Humpback whales is found off Newfoundland and Labrador. • Learn about the inner workings of a Humpback whale by examining its 50-foot skeleton on display at the King’s Point Humpback Whale Pavilion. • The Sperm whale is said to be the largest toothed mammal in the world, and to have the heaviest brain in all the animal kingdom. See its 43-foot skeleton first hand at the Triton Sperm Whale Pavilion. • In 1978, residents of Springdale helped save five Humpback whales and a Narwhal trapped in the pack ice of Halls Bay.

Common Species of Whales HUMPBACK WHALES arrive in Newfoundland in early spring on their yearly migration from the Caribbean. It’s a large whale with long, whitesided flippers which are about 1/3 of their body length. They can grow to be over 12 metres long and weigh more than 35 tonnes. MINKE WHALES are the smallest of the baleen whales and are a common sight in the bays of Newfoundland in summer and early fall when they come in to feed on capelin, mackerel and herring. Minkes weigh only around 7 tonnes and measure 8 m in length. They are black on top with small side flippers that have a little white on them, a completely white belly and a tall, hooked dorsal fin.
W
hales are important and plentiful animals in Newfoundland and Labrador’s coastal environment. As it is in the observation of all wildlife behaviour, it is important to allow the whale to control any interaction. If the animal is curious, it will approach a vessel. If it is disturbed by our presence, it will move away. The key to conduct around whales is to recognize that they are wild animals that must rest, forage, feed, socialize and complete other life processes to survive. Any activity by a vessel that disturbs or prevents animals from completing life processes represents a threat to the conservation and survival of these majestic creatures.

FIN WHALES are second only in size to Blue whales, measuring up to 20 m and weighing up to 40 tonnes. They are also baleen whales. A large whale with a streamlined, black back and long, curved dorsal fin, they have small pointed side flippers and a white belly. PILOT (POT HEAD) WHALES are best seen in summer and early fall. These toothed whales may be in groups, called pods, of up to 100. They are black with long dorsal fins and have rounded “pot-shaped” heads. They are relatively small, measuring around 5 m and weighing 3 tonnes. WHITE-Beaked DOLPHINS can often be confused with the White-Sided dolphin. They can grow up to 2.7 m long and weigh up to 200 kg. They have short white beaks and dark grey bodies with lighter grey and white patches that straddle their back in front of and behind the dorsal fin. WHITE-SIDED DOLPHINS are locally know as “squid-hounds” or “jumpers”, they love to play and jump out of the water. They have black or dark grey backs with white bellies and a grey band running their length. The also have two oval patches behind their dorsal fin that are creamy or yellow. HARBOUR PORPOISES are sometimes called “puffin pigs” because of the grunting sounds they make when breathing. They are very small, measuring only a few metres and weighing less than 50 kg. Females are often larger than the males. They have grey skin with speckles and rounded heads with no beaks. They have small black flippers and a triangular dorsal fin.

entral Newfoundland is crying out to be explored by outdoor enthusiasts. Hike through ancient woodlands, over countless miles of untamed wilderness, along coastal crevices longing to be trekked. Stroll to waterfalls on paths scented with wild flowers or hike through boreal forest, past bogs and glacial ponds to oceanic barrens overlooking the islands, reaches and sounds of our lakes and bays. Seeing is believing.
Geocaching
With 55 marked trails, there’s potential to get lost in more than just the beauty. If you’re going to enjoy Central’s natural beauty from any of our trails or coastal hikes, be sure to tell someone where you are going, your intended route and when to expect you back.
• So don your hiking boots, grab your GPS and take to the woods. If nothing else, you’re sure to find riches in the natural beauty surrounding you.
1-888-489-2366
• Over 2,400 geocaches are hidden throughout the province, and approximately one fourth can be found right here in Central. • The name of the game is geocaching and the concept is simple: download cache coordinates online, punch them into your GPS, and hit the trails in search of treasure. The only rule is, if you take something, you have to put something back.
• For coordinates of caches in Central Newfoundland, and detailed directions on how to play the game, log on to www.geocaching.com www.AdventureCentralNewfoundland.ca

Things To Know While Hiking 1) Call Of The Wild Central Newfoundland is made up of vast stretches of wilderness, and what better place to view wildlife than in its natural environment. But sometimes nature can get a little too up close and personal. Here are some tips on how to prevent face-to-face encounters: Wildlife Doesn’t Like Surprises! To avoid surprising animals, make noise, watch for fresh signs, keep your dog on a leash, travel in groups and never approach or feed wildlife. Black Bears: Newfoundland’s Black Bears are rarely aggressive but, like any wild animal, will protect their young or food, or react if surprised. While the probability of seeing a black bear may be slim, it’s best to make some noise while hiking. Wearing a bell on your shoe or backpack is one way to deter encounters. If you do spot a black bear on your trip, remain calm and leave the area slowly - never run. Coyotes: Coyotes are becoming more prevalent throughout the island. While they are usually shy animals that avoid human contact, they have been known to expand their territorial range during the last few years. Like all wildlife, it’s best to keep your distance and avoid attracting them with food. Moose: While they are not native to this province, moose have certainly thrived since their introduction to the island. 18
1-888-489-2366
They are not threatening by nature, but have been known to be aggressive during the fall rutting season and during the summer months while protecting calves. To avoid confrontation, give any moose you may encounter plenty of space.
2) The Clothes On Yer Back It’s often said you can experience all four seasons in one day in Newfoundland. So be prepared while on the land. Remember to bring extra clothing, such as a jacket or sweater, and wear proper footwear – they don’t call this place rugged for nothing!
3) Tick As Flies! The mosquitoes and black flies here won’t carry you away, but in Central’s wooded interiors, they are abundant. Be sure to equip yourself with plenty of fly spray if heading out on the trails. Or you could stick to traditional methods, such as pinning a bounce sheet on your hat or shirt.
4) Pack It In, Pack It Out Newfoundland is known for its unspoiled nature, and that’s how we intend to keep it. It’s a great idea to bring along a bag to carry your garbage or anyone else’s that you may stumble across.

entral Newfoundland’s surging coastline is dotted with bays and inlets, magnificent stands of northern boreal forest and rugged peat bogs and barrens. We’ve thrown in 22 species of whales, 10,000-year old towering icebergs, soaring seabirds, historic communities and one of the planet’s richest, warmest cultures as part of the package. If you share a love for natural beauty, history, culture and unspoiled wilderness, Central Newfoundland has plenty to offer - Terra Nova National Park, where fingers of the sea caress deep stands of boreal forest, an astounding network of trails that beckon the hiker, skier and snowmobiler, unique dialects that change from community to community, world class Atlantic salmon rivers, 36 holes of amazing golf and much, much more.
N
ewfoundland and Labrador is Canada’s easternmost province, and includes both an island and mainland. The island of Newfoundland is the 16th largest island in the world, and the Central portion - Terra Nova National Park, west to the Baie Verte Peninsula and south to Harbour Breton - is the largest of the island’s regions. Visitors should keep this in mind when planning a visit; it is not possible to see the entire island in just a few days and at least 10 days are needed for even a brief look around.
Took To Wing (By Air): The most convenient way to access Central Newfoundland is through the Gander International Airport in Gander. Known as the Crossroads of the World, Gander International Airport provides regularly scheduled and charter services for passengers and cargo to major airports, connecting with transcontinental and international routes. In addition to the convenience of location, passengers also enjoy the island’s cheapest parking, plenty of deals and free service perks. Going Round Shore (By Land): The Trans Canada Highway runs across the island from Port aux Basques to St. John’s - a distance of 905 km/543 miles. While the road runs through the heart of Central, it is the subsidiary highways that lead the way to most of the region’s gems. Kiosks for rental car services are conveniently located at Gander International Airport and various bus services are also available throughout the region. Rental Car Agencies

erra Nova, the most easterly national park in North America, is a study in contrasts: as much ‘old’ as ‘new’; as much excitement as serenity; and as much land as sea. Terra Nova National Park provides the perfect mix of extraordinary; the perfect escape from the ordinary. Reconnect with nature and camp in one of Terra Nova’s two campgrounds. Malady Head is the smaller and more remote of the two campgrounds. If you are looking for privacy and nature’s ambiance – this is the place to be! If you are looking for the “hub” of Terra Nova National Park, however, Newman Sound Campground is the larger of the two campgrounds and offers serviced sites. 24

Can’t make it here this summer or ran out of time? Come back and visit us any time of year - Terra Nova National Park is open all year long. Serviced sites and park interpretation are only available from late May to October; but there’s a lot to do here in the winter, too - cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and camping are all available for free. Come visit and discover the soul of Terra Nova for yourself. Check out the park online at YouTube or MySpace Video - search “Behind the Scenes at Terra Nova National Park”.

Kittiwake Coast
Kittiwake Coast
Newfoundland Pony Refuge, Change Islands • Trevor Lush photo
T
he Kittiwake Coast is a place that fills you with wonder and boundless opportunity for adventure. Located in the northeast region of Central Newfoundland, the Kittiwake Coast spans from Terra Nova National Park to Lewisporte and surrounding area. Included in this region are the towns of Salvage, the most photographed community on the island, and Twillingate, otherwise known as the Iceberg Capital of the World. A short drive east, catch the ferry to Change Islands which holds the title of the world’s fishing stage capital and home to the province’s only Newfoundland Pony refuge. North of Change Islands sits Fogo Island – the largest inhabited island off the province’s coast. The Canadian Tourism Commission named Fogo Island one of 32
1-888-489-2366
Canada’s top 2010 destinations, and the Flat Earth Society considers Brimstone Head in the Town of Fogo to be one of the four corners of the Earth. The capital of the Kittiwake Coast is the Town of Gander. With its rich aviation history, the community and its people were put on the world’s stage for their generosity and camaraderie following the attacks of 9/11. Whether you visit this region to unravel the mysteries of the lost culture of the Beothuk people, or to walk in the footsteps of the early European settlers who lived and worked off the land, it won’t be hard to find a way to make your vacation to this region memorable. www.AdventureCentralNewfoundland.ca

Town Trivia: • Newfoundland’s first provincial registered heritage district, the Town of Tilting, Fogo Island, is rich in Irish heritage and still celebrates its Irish culture. It’s also a National Cultural Landscape District of Canada. • In addition to its pristine beach, Musgrave Harbour is also known as the fatal crash site of Sir Frederick Banting, co-discoverer of insulin and Canada’s first Nobel Prize winner.

andscapes made up of some of the province’s most beautiful bays and fjords, 10,000 square kilometers of land, more than 1,000 kilometers of coastline, and many beautiful areas just waiting to be explored – this is the Coast of Bays. The Coast of Bays region begins at Route 360, near the community of Bishop’s Falls. Often referred to as a geographical phenomenon, this region is as diverse in its geology as it is in culture. Spread throughout the region are 22 coastal communities with populations ranging in size from less than 100 to 2,000 residents, with the largest being Harbour Breton. It is here in the Coast of Bays that the

province’s only recognized First Nations Reserve exists – the Miawpukek First Nation in Conne River. The Coast of Bays has traditionally been depended on the fishery, but today is a staple in the aquaculture industry, with all of the province’s finfish aquaculture occurring in the region. The Newfoundland Hydro Station in Bay D’Espoir is the largest generating station on the island, providing 57 per cent of the power used on the island portion of the province. Tours of the facility are available during regular work days.

Bay du Nord Wilderness Reserve Located in the heart of the region is the Bay du Nord Wilderness Reserve. With 2,895 square kilometres of unspoiled wilderness, it is the largest reserve on the island. It’s also home to the province’s largest caribou herd - the Middle Ridge herd, made up of approximately 15,000 animals - as well as the province’s second Canadian Heritage River. Every visitor to the wilderness reserve requires an entry permit. To obtain a permit contact Notre Dame Provincial Park at (709) 535-6632 or Parks and Natural Areas Division at (709) 635-4520. 74

It is here that Demasduit (Mary March), one of the last known Beothuks, was captured and later returned to her final resting place on the banks of Red Indian Lake. The Beothuk used the many rivers and lakes that meander throughout this area as highways to the sea. The Exploits River, known as a prized Atlantic salmon fishing 82

destination, is the longest and largest river on the island. Located on this mighty river, in the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor, is one of the most impressive salmon enhancement projects in North America. Visitors to the Salmonid Interpretation Centre can witness the vigour of the wild Atlantic salmon on its annual journey upriver to spawn. Whether you come to fish the bountiful waters of the Exploits, or learn the role this area played in forever changing the aviation industry, one thing is for sure - you will certainly be captivated by the boundless beauty of the Exploits Valley.

T
he Emerald Zone is known as the Great Whale Coast. Every year, an array of whales returns to this region to joyfully play and swim along the jagged shorelines of countless bays, inlets and islands that stretch from Green Bay South to the Baie Verte Peninsula. A 50-foot Humpback whale skeleton is displayed at the newly opened Humpback Whale Pavilion in King’s Point and a 43-foot Sperm whale skeleton is on display in Triton. These newly opened pavilions give a visitor the experience of discovering these giants of the sea.

Emerald Zone
Emerald Zone
In addition to its famed waters, the Emerald Zone is also rich in geology. Gold, copper, and virginite are just a few of the coveted minerals. Some 1,600 years ago, the Dorset people descended on what is now the Town of Fleur de Lys and quarried the first known commercial mine site in the province. Visitors to the Dorset Soapstone Quarry National Historic Site can run their fingers over the same stone outcrop they used to create bowls and seal oil lamps for trade and survival.

Home Grown • Natasha Henstridge was only young when she left her hometown of South Brook and went on to pursue an acting career: Species trilogy, The Whole Nine Yards, and many more. • Burlington is home to comedian Shaun Majumder, best known for his role on This Hour Has 22 Minutes, as well as singer Rex Goudie, who rose to stardom as the runner-up in the 2005 Canadian Idol Competition.
Did You Know • Some 80 to 90 per cent of the province’s Blue Mussel aquaculture production is generated in this region. • Ming’s Bight was the site of Newfoundland’s first gold mine, which operated from 1904 to 1906. • The province’s second largest community was once Little Bay. It had its own bank, court house, jail and even brothel. • Crescent Lake, Robert’s Arm, is referred to as the “Lock Ness” of Newfoundland with numerous stories recounting the sightings of a creature locally known as Cressie. • The Emerald Zone is home to the West Brook Ecological Reserve which encompasses a 10.74 square km grove of Red Pine, presently the rarest indigenous coniferous tree species in the province. 108

Adventure Central Newfoundland
Where To Have A Time
N
ewfoundlanders are known for their ability to have a good time. And right here in Central Newfoundland, we celebrate with the best of them. Almost every month of the year you can find some sort of activity happening in nooks and crannies throughout the region. From harvesting partridgeberries to drying capelin, to welcoming people back home, we only need the tiniest of excuses to throw a big bash. But don’t just stand amongst the sidelines. Grab an ugly stick and kick up your heels. In true Newfoundland style, there’s always room for one more.
