Troubleshooting Flow Charts

The diagnostics flow chart series provide a guide to troubleshooting a malfunctioning CV70. The “Component Designations” section of this manual provides a table called Subsystem and Component Designations that identifies the acronyms used in this chapter to identify devices. Refer to the following chapters in this manual for additional information:

WARNING

The CV70 contains hazardous voltages that can range from 90 VAC to 264 VAC. These voltages can cause serious injury or death. ¹ Only authorized service personnel are permitted to remove protective covers and access the energized components of this system.

The system-troubleshooting flow chart is designed as a closed loop. The main flow chart branches to secondary flow charts, each of which returns to the main flow chart for continued troubleshooting. With this method, fault conditions involving more than one error may be resolved. The flow chart is not intended to resolve all possible fault conditions; it is designed to resolve 80% of typical field situations.

Using the Flow Chart

Always start at the top and check each item in the Check column. The chart on the next page provides details for each Check item. Example: The system does not boot correctly. Do not go directly to the “Boot-up” flow chart. First confirm power by checking the LED on the Host Module OEM Sub Panel. If this LED is OK, and the monitor LED is on, then proceed to the “Boot-up” flow chart. When the “Boot-up” flow chart tasks are complete, then confirm the remaining items.

Diagnostic LED Indicators

Several groups of diagnostic LED indicators are provided; these indicate system or component status.

System Status

0

Diagnostic light emitting diodes (LEDs), located on the side of the host module, provide indications of the boot progress, the system status, and some subsystem failures. The legend shown (Fig. 11 / p. 15) depicts the LED status for the Off (extinguished), On (illuminated), and flashing (On-Off) conditions. In the “Component Designations” section of this manual provides a table called Subsystem and Component Designations that identifies the acronyms used to identify devices.

The status of the LEDs as they are progressively extinguished during the boot sequence are shown in (Fig. 12 / p. 16). The LED status after the boot sequence completes for systems with and without the DIMAQ-IP module connected, are shown in (Tab. 1 / p. 17).

NOTE

The LED designated with the V character represents the 5V supply. This LED illuminates when 5V power is available. The RTC LED indicates the operation of the real-time clock. The Windows 2000 operating system in the DIMAQ-IP boots during the sequence shown in (Fig. 12 / p. 16).

Power supply-indicating LEDs are located on the A03 switching regulator of the A07 PCB that is located under the EMI bracket (Fig. 13 / p. 18).

Diagnostic and Error Log Messages

Troubleshooting the DIMAQ-IP

Use the following instructions to troubleshoot the DIMAQ-IP.

Review Switch Failure

0

If the DIMAQ-IP screen does not display when the Review button is selected, use the following instructions to troubleshoot the failure. 1. Verify that a patient name and ID number are entered. 2. Verify that HDD is selected (not MOD) for Storage on the Preset Menu. 3. Access DIMAQ-IP through the Service Menu by selecting the DIMAQ-IP Maintenance button; a blank screen indicates a DIMAQ-IP failure. - If the trackball and the Set buttons operate properly, the DIMAQ-IP software and Windows are running, but applications are not active. - Loss of the trackball control indicates the loss of the internal Ethernet communication. - Restart the DIMAQ-IP by rebooting Windows 2000 (Start→ Restart). - Observe the screen during the reboot to detect HDD error messages. - If errors are detected, run the Scan Disk application from the Start→ Programs →Accessories →System Tools → Scan Disk menu item. - If no errors are detected on the HDD, reboot the system. 4. If DIMAQ-IP still does not function properly, reload the DIMAQ-IP software.

Corrupt Images and Clips

0

If corrupt images or clips display after pressing Review, the following failures can be the cause. 1. New images or clips produced by real-time scanning are corrupt, but images loaded from studies on the HDD or from a CD are not corrupt. Corruption of ultrasound images is caused by a failure in the host module or the failure of the image transfer path (serial). Inspect and test the host module and the serial path; replace the host module if necessary. 2. New images from real-time scanning are not corrupt, but images recalled from the HDD or from a CD are corrupt. The corruption of images loaded from the HDD or a CD is caused by the DIMAQ-IP software or by the CD-R/RW drive software. Reload the DIMAQ-IP software to resolve the problem.

DIMAQ-IP BIOS Corruption - CMOS Error Solution

In the event of DIMAQ-IP CMOS memory loss, the DIMAQ-IP will not boot. The System will display the following Error message: Crescendo application is not available. Check DIMAQ-IP In the DIMAQ-IP Maintenance mode, the BIOS screen will display the following message: Warning! CMOS Save and Restore Error! An error occurred while attempting to erase Flash. Error 0251-System CMOS Checksum Bad-Default Configuration used. Warning 0211-Keyboard Error Press F1 to resume, F2 to set up. The DIMAQ-IP boot is stopped at waiting for input: F1-Resume or F2-Setup. To resolve the problem, perform the following instructions. 1. Power off the system. 2. Locate a PS2 keyboard. 3. Open the upper-rear panel of the system. Refer to the section. 4. Connect the PS2 keyboard to the lower left corner of the DIMAQ-IP (Fig. 14 / p. 26).

5. Power on the system, and wait for boot sequence to complete. 6. Press F4 Preset Menu from to display the Preset Menu. 7. Select Service to display the authentication screen. 8. Type the service password and select Ok. 9. From the Service Main Menu, select the DIMAQ-IP Maintenance button to display the DIMAQ-IP boot-up screen. 10. Press the F2 key from the external keyboard.

11. The BIOS screen is displayed (Main, Advanced, Security, Power, Boot, Exit). Use the left and/or right arrow key(s) to select Boot. 12. Check that the boot sequence has been set as follows: ATAPI CD-ROM + Removable devise + Hard Disk Drive 13. If the boot sequence is not shown as in the previous step, for example, it may be shown as: + Removable devise + Hard Disk Drive ATAPI CD-ROM Then do the following: - Use the up arrow and/or down arrow key(s) to select the ATAPI CD-ROM. - Use the + key to change its position, until it shown as in step 12. 14. Use the left and/or right arrow key(s) to select Exit. 15. Check that the configuration of Exit has been set as follows: CMOS Restore Condition Always) Save CMOS to Flash Erase CMOS from Flash Restore CMOS from Flash 16. If the configuration is not as in the previous step, for example, it may be shown as: CMOS Restore Condition (Never) Save CMOS to Flash Erase CMOS from Flash Restore CMOS from Flash Then, use the + to change the setting until “CMOS Restore Condition” is shown as Always. 17. Use the down arrow key to select Save CMOS to Flash and execute Save CMOS to Flash. 18. Press F10 from the external keyboard to save the setting. 19. Press Set from the external keyboard to confirm saving configuration and exiting from BIOS. 20. DIMAQ-IP will restart automatically, and wait for the boot sequence to complete. 21. Power off the system. 22. Disconnect the PS2 keyboard. 23. Power on the system, and wait for the boot sequence to complete.

SRAM Memory Clear

Overview

0

Background This procedure is valid for use with systems at software versions below 2.0. Battery-backed SRAM memory may become corrupt after an unexpected power loss during system operation. If this happens, the following may occur:

• The system may not power back up to imaging. • The system may display errors or display the message No System. Insert System Disk. Reloading system software may not be possible without first clearing battery-backed SRAM. When the problem occurs the Unknown file error messages are typically displayed before and after software reload attempts. Purpose This procedure describes how to clear the battery-backed SRAM so that the software can be reloaded. Two methods are provided: a software solution (recommended) and a hardware solution.

• Software Solution - This method uses the Memory Repair Disk to clear SRAM memory and is the most effective and recommended method.

• Hardware Solution - This method removes battery power from the SRAM in the Host module to clear the memory and is provided as a alternate to the recommended software method above.

CAUTION

Clearing SRAM memory clears system Software Option Keys, QuickSets, Preset data, and Service data. ¹ Obtain the Option Key MO disks and the Preset MO disk to restore the system to the previous operating condition. If Preset data, Service data, and QuickSets were not previously backed up to the Preset MO disk, manually reconfigured the system to customer preference. Clearing SRAM memory should not effect exam data stored on the DIMAQ-IP hard drive.

CAUTION

Reloading DIMAQ-IP software overwrites all data on the DIMAQ-IP hard drive. ¹ Therefore, before reloading DIMAQ-IP software, customer data on the DIMAQ-IP hard drive that must be maintained should be backed up to CD.

Preparation Before working on the ultrasound system, observe the following guidelines. 1. Power off the system. 2. Disconnect all transducers from the system. 3. Move the system to a level location that provides one meter of work space around the system. 4. Engage each of the four wheel locks to prevent the system from moving during the service activity. Safeguard all hardware and fasteners removed from the system: These items my be needed later in the procedure.

CAUTION

The CV70 contains components that are sensitive to damage by electrostatic discharge (ESD). ¹ Observe ESD protective procedures and use ESD protective equipment including an ESD wrist strap, when the protective covers are removed from the system.

Clearing the SRAM - Software Method CAUTION

Clearing SRAM memory clears system Software Option Keys, QuickSets, Preset data, and Service data. ¹ Obtain the Option Key MO disks and the Preset MO disk to restore the system to the previous operating condition. If Preset data, Service data, and QuickSets were not previously backed up to the Preset MO disk, manually reconfigured the system to customer preference. Clearing SRAM memory should not effect exam data stored on the DIMAQ-IP hard drive.

Perform the following steps to clear the battery-backed SRAM in the CV70. This is the most effective and recommended method. 1. Power off the system. 2. Insert the Memory Repair Disk into the MO drive. 3. Wait 15 seconds from power off, then power on the system. 4. The system boots from the disk, and a message box displays. 5. Eject the Memory Repair Disk from the MO Drive. 6. Select the Clear button in the message box to clear the SRAM. 7. When the progress bar has filled completely to the right, select the Start button in the message box to continue the boot process. NOTE

Print any error messages that occur; then, press Cancel or OK to continue the boot process.

When the boot sequence completes, the normal imaging screen should display. 8. Power off the system, wait 15 seconds, then power on the system again. The system should power on to the normal imaging screen, but all Software Option Keys, Quicksets, Presets data, and Service data will not display as previously set. NOTE

Optionally, choose to reload the system software at this time, but it should not be necessary.

9. Proceed to “Restoring the Software Option Keys and System Presets”.

Clearing the SRAM - Hardware Method CAUTION

If preset data, service data, and Quicksets were not previously backed up to the preset MO disk, manually reconfigured the system to customer preference. Clearing SRAM memory should not effect exam data stored on the DIMAQ-IP hard drive.

If the memory repair disk is not available at the time it is needed, an optional method described below that involves removing battery power from the sram in the Host Module to clear the memory. 1. Power the system off and switch off the MAINS circuit breaker. 2. Remove the upper rear panel as described in . 3. Remove the lower rear panel as described in (US05-101.841.01 / Removing the Rear Lower Panel). 4. Loosen the two screws that secure the access cover to the bottom of the Host Module to expose the SRAM battery (Fig. 15 / p. 32). 5. Disconnect P443 from J5 on the Host Module. observe that the green wire on P443 mates with J5 pin 1.

6. Short J5 pins 1 and 2 together and to ground. 7. With P443 disconnected, keep the system off for at least 15 minutes. 8. Reconnect P443 to J5.

9. Switch the MAINS circuit breaker on and power on the system. As the system powers on, the following error message should display: No language. 10. Select Cancel to continue. As the system continues the boot sequence, the following errors may display: - SRAM Error - TV format (twice) If these errors display, again select Cancel (or Ok) to continue the boot sequence. The system should boot to imaging; however, the image and graphics will be offset slightly. 11. Power off the system, wait 15 seconds, then power on the system again. The system should power on to the normal imaging screen, but all Software Option Keys, Quicksets, presets data, and service data, will not display as previously set. NOTE

Optionally, choose to reload the system software at this time, but it should not be necessary to do so.

12. Proceed to “Restoring the Software Option Keys and System Presets”.

Restoring the Software Option Keys and System Presets

This section describes how to restore the Software Option Key settings and the system presets after clearing SRAM. 1. Set the correct date and time. With the system powered on to imaging, do the following: -

Press the F4 key. Select General (if it is not already selected). Correct the date and time. Select Set. Select Save.

2. Verify that the date and time are correct on the imaging screen. 3. Verify the system serial number as follows: -

Press the F4 key. Select Service.” Type the service password. Select System and verify that the system serial number is correctly listed. If so, proceed to step 4. - If the serial number is not correct, select Input, select Set, then enter the correct serial number. - Select Ok.

Troubleshooting 4. Return to the imaging screen as follows: - Select Home. - Select Exit. The imaging screen should display. 5. Press the F4 key. 6. Select Installation from Key Disk. NOTE

Wait three minutes for the DIMAQ-IP to complete the boot sequence. When complete, “DIMAQ-IP” is listed on the “Installed Option” screen (Fig. 16 / p. 34). If “DIMAQ-IP” is not listed, re-install both the system and DIMAQ-IP software. For additional information on installing software, refer to the corresponding version of the DIMAQ/System Software procedure.

7. Insert each Software Option Key disk and select Install TO restore the system options. 8. Press the Escape/View key to exit the preset menu.

9. Press Review key to display the DIMAQ-IP study screen. NOTE

If the dimaq-ip study screen is not displayed, you may need to reload DIMAQ-IP software. For additional information on installing software, refer to the corresponding version of the DIMAQ/System Software procedure.

10. Insert the Backup Preset MO disk.

11. Select the MO radio button from the DIMAQ-IP study screen disk area. 12. Select the Preset tab. 13. From the File Type pull-down menu: -

Select Total System Configuration. Select the file name displayed. Select Recall. Select Ok. Ignore the Restart System message.

14. Press the Review key. 15. Select the MO radio button. 16. Select the Preset tab. 17. FROM the File Type pull-down menu: -

Select DICOM Settings. Select the file name to restore. Select Recall. Select Ok. Ignore the Restart System message.

18. Press the Review key. 19. Select the MO radio button. 20. Select the Preset tab, then proceed as follows: -

Select the Recall Presets button. Select the Quicksets boxes to restore. Select Ok. Select Exit. NOTE

Optionally, restore selected service backups from the SERVICE Backup/restore menu but it should not be necessary to boot the system at this time.

21. Cycle the system power. - Power off the system. - Wait 15 seconds. - Power on the system again. 22. Complete a functional check of the system and peripherals for details (if required), refer to .

To change the video format from the Imaging application screen: 1. Type the following using all uppercase characters: XAINMO. 2. To change the format to PAL or NTSC: - PAL format, enter tvpal$on. - NTSC format, enter tveia$on. 3. Cycle the system power to apply the video format change. 4.
