Acting Monologue

Sean Williams 9/24 Coach… Hello Coach. What I wanted to talk to you about is the way you are running this team. Everybody knows the way you are doing it is all wrong. The potential for a good team at this school is unreal. But due to the way you run things you end up driving away all of the good players. You know there is an issue when, say for example Cole, gets cut from your team. He is playing Division 1 soccer for Air Force next year, yet he gets cut from his High School team because you have a personal grudge against him. As our coach, are you not here to make us the best team we can be? You need to learn to take some criticism and be open to suggestions. You cannot maintain a high level team when you cut players such as Cole, James, Nick, and Kyle who will be playing at Division one schools, merely because they do not buy in 100% to what you want to do with the team. To have a good team you need good players. That’s the bottom line. Even somebody who has never seen a soccer ball in their life would agree that this is not the correct way to coach. If you were not so stubborn and didn’t have such a thick skull we could have one of the top High School teams in the nation. What are we instead? Average. If that’s what you want by all means keep making these stupid decisions and continue holding grudges against players for questioning your tactics ONE TIME!! Its no

surprise that people don’t want to play for your program, and for that I am glad to not be playing for you this year.

1. Who. Who are you talking to? What is your relationship to them? What does this person mean to you? How long have you known them? I am talking to my highschool soccer coach. Our relationship was pretty strictly coach – athlete. This person did not mean to much to me, except for the fact that he took away the opportunity to play high school soccer. I have known them for around 4 years at the time this takes place. 2. What and Why. What it is you’re trying to get from this person? Why are you talking to them? What has JUST happened that propels you to talk to this person? At this point I had just been cut from the team my senior year. I am not trying to be put on the team, but rather get my point across to the coach that the way he is running the team is all wrong. I am trying to make him better the program for the future. The ironic thing is that he got fired from his coaching job after the completion of this season in which he cut me and many other good players. 3. Where. Where are you? Please be specific. Don’t just say the location. Describe in detail what is around you and what you see.

I am sitting in the front right desk of the coach’s classroom at our school, which is Carney Room number 013. It is in the basement of the building, and there are many biology posters dispersed on the walls. 4. When. When in your life is this taking place? What time of year is it? What time of day? This is taking place in mid November of my senior year. 2013. This conversation would have likely taken place during lunch time, which would be near 12:30 pm.
