Application Fields of application
Acronal S 430 P is used mainly to modify hydraulic binders. The low glass transition temperature and high elasticity of the product are used to reduce the elastic modulus of mortars and increase their ultimate elongation, abrasion resistance and adhesion. Even at temperatures below 0 °C, it greatly improves flexibility. The special additive system in Acronal S 430 P ensures excellent processing properties, such as a long pot life and no cracking when the mortar sets. The powder is completely free of cellulose derivatives and inorganic extenders. Acronal S 430 P can be added to dry mortar powders for construction adhesives and to cement-based waterproofing systems. Because of its high binding strength and rapid redispersibility, it can be used in formulations in which the polymer must act as the main, or even the sole binder. An example of cement-based waterproofing systems are flexible waterproofing slurries for balconies, terraces and cellars. Up to now, the majority were made with 2-component systems, often based on Acronal S 400. With Acronal S 430 P, it is possible to formulate single-component powder products with unique flexibility and adhesion to problem substrates. It also gives highly flexible ceramic tile adhesives that do not fail, even when exposed to the large fluctuations in temperature that can occur outdoors. Single-component products with Acronal S 430 P are also excellent for flexible substrates such as wooden floors which demand a flexible tile adhesive. The powder can even be used to improve the properties of watertight tile adhesives.
Processing
We recommend to add 20 – 30 % Acronal S 430 P to mortars, and 30 – 200 % to cement-based flexible coatings, in each case as a proportion of the cement. Acronal S 430 P can be incorporated with the usual mixing equipment used in the manufacture of dry mortars. Because of the thermoplastic nature of the product, care should be taken to avoid excessive heat development when the dry components are mixed. Acronal S 430 P dissolves when it is used in alkaline systems that cure by absorbing water. It quickly develops its final properties when it is formulated with water, without an extended maturing period.

The rheological properties can be adjusted in the customary manner with thixotropic agents such microsilica or cellulose derivatives to suit individual applications. Formulators who develop products based on Acronal S 430 P must thoroughly test their products, as manufacture and processing are affected by many factors, e.g. compatibility with other ingredients in the formulation, mixing procedures, adhesion to different substrates etc. that we cannot cover comprehensively in our own tests. Tests should include a storage test at approx. 50 °C to reveal any changes, e. g. in the viscosity when the product is prepared for use.
Safety General data
Attention must be paid to the normal precautions for handling chemicals and to the measures prescribed in the local health regulations. These include efficient ventilation of the workplace to remove dust, good care of the skin and the wearing of eye protection.
Safety Data Sheet
The Safety Data Sheet drawn up for Acronal S 430 P provides information on all the data relevant to safety.
Airborne concentration
Acronal S 430 P contains unavoidable traces of volatile organic compounds. Please see the safety data sheet for further information.
Industrial hygiene
If properly handled and used for the intended purpose, Acronal S 430 P has no harmful effects on health, according to our experience and the information available to us. Prolonged exposure to the product can cause irritation of the skin and mucous membranes.
Labelling
According to the information available to us, the product is not hazardous in the sense of Appendix I No. 1.1 of the German Health and Safety Regulations or the “EC Guidelines for Classification, Packaging and Labelling of Dangerous Substances”. It contains no constituents that must be taken into account for labelling.
Storage Acronal S 430 P can be stored for up to 6 months in a cool, dry place. Containers that have been opened must be used up as quickly as possible, as the product becomes lumpy when exposed to atmospheric humidity. Since Acronal S 430 P is thermoplastic in nature, care must be taken not to expose it to elevated temperatures or pressure, as this can cause caking. This risk is practically eliminated in the made-up dry mortar.
Note The information submitted in this publication is based on our current knowledge and experience. In view of the many factors that may affect processing and application, these data do not relieve processors of the responsibility of carrying out their own tests and experiments; neither do they imply any legally binding assurance of certain properties or of suitability for a specific purpose. It is the responsibility of those to whom we supply our products to ensure that any proprietary rights and existing laws and legislation are observed.
