2 Read the text. Compare houses in Ancient Britain with the Roman villa. Underline what was different.
The Romans invaded Britain in 50 BC. They changed lots of things in Britain. They built towns and cities. They built long roads. They built new houses. Ancient Britons lived in small villages. They lived in round houses. The houses were big – everyone lived in one room. The houses were quite warm because there was a big fire in the middle. The Ancient Britons slept on mattresses made of straw. They didn’t have beds. The mattresses were on the floor. They decorated their houses for festivals with flowers and branches. 2nd November 2008 Hello! We’re Jan and Dave Griffith and this is our new blog! We love canoeing. We try to go sailing every weekend. Our cat, Sophie Tucker, comes with us. She loves the sea. 6th December 2008 I’m excited about the weekend. We’re going sailing off the coast of Florida. It’s so beautiful there. We’re going to sail for a few days and sleep on the yacht. 8th November 2008 What a terrible weekend! There was a bad storm. It was very frightening. Then something awful happened. A big wave came over the boat and Jan fell into the sea. Poor dog! We looked for her for four hours but the weather was very bad. We decided to continue our journey. I miss Sophie Tucker. I feel very sad that she’s gone. 3rd January 2009 Still no news about poor Sophie Tucker. We’ve asked everywhere. We put up posters in the ports and on the islands. We heard about a wild dog on St Bees Island. Some tourists saw it. I don’t think it’s our Sophie Tucker, though. The people said the dog was scared and unfriendly. It was thin and it took their food. 6th February 2009 The police on St Bees Island are going to catch the wild dog. It’s killed some cats and people are angry. The rangers asked us to go and look at it tomorrow. I don’t think it’s Sophie.
3 Imagine you are Jan or Dave. Write your blog for the end of the story. Use these questions to help you.
Where did Jan and Dave go to meet the rangers? Where was the dog when they saw her? Did they recognise the dog?
How did they feel when they saw the dog? How did the dog behave? What did they do next?

Last night I went to see The BFG – it’s a play based on a book by the famous author Roald Dahl. I love the book so I was interested (1)
in
seeing the play.
It’s the story of Sophie, a little girl in England, who meets the BFG (Big Friendly Giant). He takes her from her room one night. At first, Sophie is scared (2) (3)
the giant, but he is friendly
her. The other giants are mean and scary. The BFG is angry (4)
and tired (5)
them
their bad behaviour. With Sophie’s help, he catches them and puts them in
a cage. I was excited (6) worried (7) (8) very good (9)
seeing the play, because it is one of my favourite stories! But I was it, too. What if the script wasn’t funny? Roald Dahl’s books are famous
their crazy characters and the fantastic pictures by Quentin Blake. But the cast was making the audience laugh. The director was very happy (10)
the reaction!
3 Write a review of a play that you have seen. Use the questions to help you. What is the name of the play? Who is it by? What is the story? How do the characters feel? How did the actors / audience feel before the play? Why? Is anyone famous for something special? How did the audience / cast / director / lighting designer feel after the play? 5 Teacher’s Resource CD-ROM © Oxford University Press Photocopiable
