General On the A380, systems are structured within an "avionics world" and an "open world". The "avionics world" gathers aircraft systems in a secured environment. The "open world" is like an extension of the aircraft systems to the outside for airline operations and passengers needs. The "open world" is mainly composed of an onboard hardware platform called Network Server System (NSS) and of a set of applications, electronic documentation called Onboard Information System (OIS). The purpose of the NSS is to offer a cost effective and versatile network for hosting the OIS. The NSS and the OIS will improve the airline operations related to flight, maintenance and cabin operations, and, to implement additional services for passengers. The NSS, based on high-speed communication protocol, mainly supplies: -A servers and routers platform, -Connections to Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) for various end users, which are the flight crew, the maintenance staff, the cabin crew and the passengers, -Secured data communication with the aircraft systems in the avionics world through firewalls, -An external data communication capability with Airline Operational Control (AOC) centers and with service providers (e.g.: electronic mail). The OIS mainly improves the airlines operations on ground and in flight by: -Supplying electronic forms (e.g.: logbook) and documentations, replacing the use of paper media, -Offering a set of customized applications and documentation developed either by the aircraft manufacturer, the airlines or a third party. These enhancements give: -The flight crew an easy, intuitive and quick access to the data they may require to make a decision, etc., MAINTENANCE COURSE - T1 & T2 (RR / Metric) LEVEL I - ATA 46 Network Server System & Onboard Information System
-The maintenance staff, tools to get easy maintenance operations improving the autonomy of the aircraft and leading to the reduction of the failure isolation time, -The cabin crew an easy access to their electronic documentation and electronic form used for cabin operations, -The passengers a worldwide electronic mail and Internet services.

NETWORK SERVER SYSTEM & ONBOARD INFORMATION SYSTEM PRESENTATION NSS Architecture The NSS has a network infrastructure based mainly on onboard servers, routers and laptops. The NSS is divided into 3 sub-networks associated to the 3 NSS domains.
L0Y06082 - L0DT0T0 - LM46P1NSSOIS001
AVIONICS DOMAIN The AVIONICS DOMAIN is composed of: -2 redundant servers named Aircraft Network Server Unit-OPerationS (ANSU-OPS). These servers supply computing and memory resources to the hosted OIS applications, documentation and database. -2 redundant routers named Aircraft Router Unit-OPerationS (ARU-OPS). These routers manage data exchanged between the AVIONICS WORLD, the Network Server System (NSS) and its Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs). -1 Secure Interface Router Unit (SIRU) is dedicated to decontaminating Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) messages coming from ground and to safely connect Portable Multipurpose Access Terminals (PMATs) and Flight Attendant Panels (FAPs) giving access to some NSS AVIONICS DOMAIN hosted applications, -2 Secured Communication Interfaces (SCIs), which supply safe and duplex communication between the OIS applications and the AVIONICS WORLD. Both SCIs also do the same between the OIS applications and the Airline Operational Control (AOC) centers through ACARS network. The Centralized Data Acquisition Module (CDAM) supplies aircraft parameters and avionics data from the AVIONICS WORLD to the NSS for recording and for OIS applications needs. -1 Open World Diode (OWD), which allows an unidirectional data flow coming from the AVIONICS DOMAIN and going to other NSS domains and some cabin systems. MAINTENANCE COURSE - T1 & T2 (RR / Metric) LEVEL I - ATA 46 Network Server System & Onboard Information System
Note that the OWD is an electrical device that gives a single way of communication from its left to its right side. It prevents malicious data coming from its right going to the avionics domain and to the avionics world. The AVIONICS DOMAIN is accessible from the cockpit, from the cabin and from additional areas on the A/C, through various HMIs, which are: -The CAPT and the F/O Onboard Information Terminals (OITs) with their keyboard and Additional Control Device (ACD) mainly dedicated to the flight crew, -The Onboard Maintenance Terminal (OMT), including a media drive (CD reader/writer and DVD reader), dedicated to the maintenance staff, -The PMATs dedicated to maintenance staff (only one PMAT is basic and it is a ground support equipment), -The main and upper deck Flight Attendant Panels (FAPs) dedicated to the cabin crew, -And the Printer-1, located on the pedestal, dedicated to flight crew and maintenance staff.
