Communication to and from the aircraft may be in voice or data mode, depending on the communication system used. The cockpit crew can communicate by using HF and VHF radio communication systems as well as satellite communication system. Air-ground communications are available in voice and data mode. Air-air communications are available in voice mode only. When the aircraft is at the gate, airlines can use the Wireless Airport Communication System (WACS) to transfer some specific data (optional equipment). Inside the aircraft, on-board communication system let flight crew, ground crew and passengers communicate to each other. A static discharging system protects the communications system from interference caused by static electricity.

Audio signals from the users are routed to the different systems capable of voice communications. To communicate outside the aircraft, the operators can use radio communications such as HF and VHF systems or the satellite communication (SATCOM) system. The Flight, Service and Cabin interphone systems are used for the on-board communications. The Radio and Audio Integrated Management System (RAIMS) controls voice communication in the cockpit environment. The Cabin Intercommunication Data System (CIDS) is dedicated to the cabin crew with its Cabin interphone system. The RAIMS is interfaced with the CIDS to allow interphone communication between cockpit, cabin and ground environments.

Data is transmitted between the aircraft and ground stations including Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Airline Operational Control (AOC). This transmitted data is used for various purposes, which include regulatory and maintenance requirements. The Avionics Communication Router (ACR) system is the main router for data communications. This system routes the messages to the best communication system that suits the quality of service requirements defined by the user applications. The communication systems linked to the ACR are HF, VHF and SATCOM systems. In the Open World, specific data is routed by the Cabin Router Units (CRUs), which are part of the Network Server System (NSS). These routers are linked especially to the optional Wireless Airport Communication System (WACS). SATCOM system can also be used if the High Speed Data Unit (HSDU) is installed.

VOICE & DATA COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS PRESENTATION Communication systems (continued) Radio communications Radio communication systems are HF and VHF systems. HF The HF system is composed of 2 HF Data Radio (HFDR) transceivers, 2 HFDR couplers and a single antenna. Both subsystems are capable of VOICE and DATA communication. Links between transceivers and between couplers avoid any simultaneous transmission from HFDR 1 and HFDR 2 transceivers.
L0Y06082 - L0DT0T0 - LM23P1COMS00001
VHF The VHF system is composed of 3 VHF Data Radio (VDR) transceivers and their 3 dedicated antennas. All three transceivers are fully interchangeable and capable of VOICE and DATA communication but only VDR 3 transceiver is connected to the data sources.

The aircraft is equipped with a SATellite COMmunication (SATCOM) system. It provides the capability for all aeronautical satellite communication requirements external to the aircraft, including data and telephone services. The SATCOM system is composed of two subsystems: - The avionics subsystem, which converts voice/data signals into L-band radio frequencies (and vice-versa), - The antenna subsystem, which sends and receives L-band radio frequencies. The Satellite Data Unit (SDU) supplies all primary services necessary to provide air/ground communications through satellites (connection protocols and signal conversion). The Diplexer/Low Noise Amplifier (D/LNA) segregates transmitted and received signals and amplifies the received signal. The Beam Steering Unit (BSU) controls the pointing of the airborne antenna. The optional High Speed Data Unit (HSDU) can be installed to allow data intercommunication to and from the Open World.

L0Y06082 - L0DT0T0 - LM23P2RAIMS0001
The Radio and Audio Integrating Management System (RAIMS) lets the cockpit crew control: - Audio communications to and from the cockpit. - Communication means such as radio frequency selection and data mode selection. The RAIMS also manages the call indications on the Radio and audio Management Panels (RMPs). The main components of the RAIMS are: - 2 Audio Management Units (AMUs) for audio signals management. - 3 RMPs, which act as the Human Machine Interface (HMI) for radio and audio management. The three RMPs are identical and interchangeable. There are bi-directional dialog busses between the 3 RMPs: this makes possible the updating of RMPs information.

The 2 AMUs are the main parts of the audio management in the Communications System. They manage all audio signals to and from the cockpit, especially between the cockpit and the communication means. Cockpit crew uses the RMPs to select the communication means with the transmission and reception keys dedicated to each communication system. In the cockpit, a potentiometer on each side is used for the adjustment of pilot and 1st officer loudspeakers (two each). Radio Navigation and Flight Warning Systems are linked to the AMUs to broadcast indicating and warning messages through the loudspeakers. These messages include a/c altitude, ground station identification, aural warnings ...

The RMPs are used in the radio management functions. They display the radio frequency for tuning of the HF and VHF systems. As a back-up, RMPs are also able to tune the radio navigation systems if manual selection becomes necessary. The crew can use the SATCOM telephone facilities by dialing assigned telephone numbers on the RMPs. The DATA mode control is done through the RMPs (VHF, HF and SATCOM).

RADIO & AUDIO INTEGRATING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM PRESENTATION Calls management The RAIMS manages visual and aural indication of calls.
Aircraft call SELCAL calls are detected by the AMUs on reception of coded VHF or HF signals. Coded signals are compared to a SELCAL code specific to the aircraft. This code is selected through the Onboard Maintenance System. When the ground personnel initiates a call to the cockpit crew of a particular aircraft using satellite communication, the SATCOM system sends the information to both AMUs and RMPs. When a call is detected on radio or satellite communication means, the amber "CALL" light flashes on the transmission key corresponding to the communication means it comes from. An aural warning is also heard on loudspeakers and boomsets.
Cabin crew call
L0Y06082 - L0DT0T0 - LM23P2RAIMS0001
Cabin crew can also call the cockpit crew. This function comes from the Cabin Intercommunication Data System (CIDS). When the call is initiated, the amber "ATT" light flashes on the CAB transmission key. An aural warning is also heard on loudspeakers and boomsets.
Ground crew call The Cockpit-to-Ground Crew Call System is part of the RAIMS. Cockpit crew can initiate a call to the ground mechanics by pressing the MECH P/BSW on the CALLS panel. This action activates the horn at the NLG area and a blue light on the service panel. The ground mechanics can also call the cockpit using the COCKPIT CALL P/BSW on the service panel. The amber "MECH" light on the INT transmission key will flash and an aural warning will sound on loudspeakers and boomsets.

A380 TECHNICAL TRAINING MANUAL
COCKPIT VOICE RECORDING SYSTEM PRESENTATION Principle The Cockpit Voice Recording System is mainly composed of: - a CVR, which memory can store two hours of audio recording and record the data link messages during this recording period. - a CVR control unit, which is used for the manual control and monitoring of the CVR. - a cockpit area microphone, which picks up and transmits to the CVR direct conversations between crew members, aural warnings in the cockpit and all other ambient noises from the cockpit.
The recorder memory can store two hours of audio recording. When the memory is full, an overwriting function starts. On ground only, under specific conditions, erasure of the CVR memories is possible.
Recording The CVR records: - 3 audio channels from the Audio Management Unit (AMU) 1 integrated in the Radio Audio Interface Management System (RAIMS) (one for each cockpit station). - 1 audio channel from the cockpit area microphone, which is amplified by the CVR control unit. - All necessary data link communication messages directly from the ATC applications.
L0Y06082 - L0DT0T0 - LM23P4CVRS00001
Power supply The CVR is permanently supplied with 115VAC. It initiates the recording upon reception of ground discrete via the logic relay wiring. It mainly depends on A/C flight/ground condition and whether the engine is running or not. On ground, pressing the ReCorDeR GrouND ConTroL P/BSW can manually set the CVR in recording configuration. This manual mode allows pre-flight checklist recording and maintenance/test operations.
CVR Control Unit The CVR control unit is installed on the overhead panel. It is used for the testing of the CVR and the listening of recorded audio signals. MAINTENANCE COURSE - T1 & T2 (RR / Metric) LEVEL I - ATA 23 Communications

EXTERNAL & TAXIING AID CAMERA SYSTEM PRESENTATION General
L0Y06082 - L0DT0T0 - LM23P5ETACS0001
The External and Taxiing Aid Camera System (ETACS) lets the crew visually monitor the A/C by using cameras. During taxiing, the crew visually monitors the position of the L/G wheels on the taxiway. If the optional nose camera is installed, the crew can visually monitor before push back, the engine intakes area as well as loading and service areas to confirm clearance.

The Camera Interface Unit (CIU) is used to manage the cameras. It receives the video images from each camera, puts them in the mosaic format and adds inserts on these mosaic images. Then, the CIU sends the images to the Display Units (DUs) (PFDs and SD) selected by the pilots on the EFIS and ECAM control panels. These images are sent through the Concentrator and Multiplexer for Video (CMV).

COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM MAINTENANCE (1) Communications safety items
L0Y06082 - L0DT0T0 - LM23P6MAINT0001
When you work on the communications system, make sure that you obey all the AMM safety precautions. This will prevent injury to persons and/or damage to the aircraft. Here is an overview of main safety precautions relative to the communications system. Make sure that all persons stay away from the base of the HF antenna (in a zone of 5 meters radius) when it is energized. The antenna uses high power when it transmits and can cause injury to persons. Do not transmit with the HF system during aircraft refueling. Transmission with the HF system during refueling can cause injury and/or start a fire. When the mechanic call horn operates, the sound level is more than 110 dB. Continuous exposure to noise at this level can harm your hearing.
