Captain's Primary Flight Display (PFD)
1. Flight Mode Annunciator Displays 5 columns 3 lines of flight mode annunciations and messages First column represents Speed Mode Second column represents the vertical mode Third is lateral navigation mode Fourth column indicates the Autopilot’s capability for what concerns the landing phase Fifth indicates the engaged modes of autopilot/flight director. In the first three columns of FMA, any indication displayed in green indicates an active mode, for example ALT indicates the autopilot and/or flight director is in altitude hold mode. An indication in blue is an armed mode (= ready to be activated when all conditions are met). For example the G/S blue indications means that the autopilot is ready to intercept the glide slope. In order to know what mode is engaged, it is vital that the pilot relies on the FMA indications, not on the MCP. This is where he will for sure recognize that the autopilot, flight director and/or autothrust is engaged or not.
PFD Airspeed Indications VMAX Defined by the lower end of a red and black strip along the speed scale. This indicates
A320PIC

the maximum speed at which the aircraft can be flow. This speed will vary with altitude and atmospheric conditions and is the lowest of VMC ( or MMC ), VFE, or VLE if the landing gear is extended. Computed by the FAC’s.
2.Green Dot Speed Appears while flying in the clean configuration (= with no flaps/slats extended). Represents the best lift-to-drag, as computed by the FAC’s and will be the actual speed at which the pilot will select one step of flaps when decreasing the speed. This also generally corresponds to the holding speed.
Speed Indicators
F - Minimum Flap Retraction Speed - Appears in green next to the minimum speed for selecting position 1 when the FLAPS selector is in position 3 or 2. This also corresponds to the speed at which the pilot will select FLAPS 3 and FLAPS FULL when decreasing the speed towards landing.Computed by the FACs. S - Minimum Slat Retraction Speed - Appears in green next to the minimum speed for selecting position 0 when the FLAPS selector is in position 1 and also corresponds to the speed at which the pilot will select FLAPS 2 when decreasing the speed.. Computed by the FACs. 1 - Decision Speed (V 1) - Appears in blue next to the speed entered by the crew through the MCDU. When out of indication range, appears on upper part of scale. Disappears after lift-off.
3. Actual Airspeed Reference Line Indicates the actual airspeed where the scale value moves in front of the line. Airspeed indication starts from 30 knots.
4. Speed Trend Arrow Starting from the airspeed reference line, points to the speed value which will be attained in 10 seconds if the acceleration remains constant. Appears only when speed difference is greater than two knots. Disappears when speed difference is less than one knot, or if FACs fail.
5. Target Airspeed Pointer Points to the target airspeed value or the airspeed corresponding to the target Mach number. The pointer is magenta when the target airspeed is the value computed by the FMGC in managed speed mode. The pointer is blue when the target airspeed is manually entered on the FMGC or manually entered on the FCU. When the target airspeed is out of the speed tape range, the target speed value is displayed above or below the speed tape in numeric form.
Mach Number Displays when number is greater than .5.
Not displayed when LS (ILS information) is selected. 6. ILS Information

Side Slip Index / Beta Target Indicates lateral acceleration on the ground and side slip in flight as provided by ADIRS. Reaches stop at .3Gs. The side slip indicator is usefull in flight to maintain coordinated flight (= zero sideslip). In case of engine failure the lower symbol becomes Blue and indicates Beta Target. Beta target is not the same as the side slip indicator as it represents the lowest drag for the initial climb out on one engine. The pilot will use the rudder to center the symbol and this will give him maximum climbing performance in case of an engine failure on takeoff.
10. Glide Slope Deviation Scale Appears when ILS switch is pushed. Flashes continuously when the deviation exceeds one dot for two seconds or more (above 100 feet RA).
11. Target Altitude or Selected FL Indicator Indicates the FCU-selected target altitude or the selected flight level.
12. Altitude Indication Displays altitude in green on a white moving scale. "NEG" appears in window to indicate negative altitude. Window changes from yellow to amber if the airplane deviates from the selected altitude or flight level while a chime will be heard in the cockpit. Numerical value changes from green to amber when the airplane flies below any MDA entered in the MCDU.
13. Barometric Reference Indication Indicates that either STD or QNH has been selected as barometric reference.
PFD Vertical Speed Indications Label 14. Digital Vertical Speed Indication Displays green. Disappears when vertical speed is less than 200 feet per minute. Window surrounding indication becomes amber to indicate inertial data has been replaced by barometric information.

Throttle Controls
Autothrust System The Autothrust System (A/THR), using inputs from the FMGC, controls thrust based on airplane speed, altitude and configuration. The throttles do not move when the AutoThrust System is in use. The system is armed in flight by pushing the A/THR switch on the FCU when the throttles are not in the engagement range.
Throttles Transmit signals to the FADEC, which computes and displays the thrust rating limit and EPR. The throttle can only be moved manually. There are five lever positions define by stops or detents: Reverse Idle, Forward Idle, Climb (CL), Continuous Thrust (FLX/MCT) and TakeOff / Go Around (TO/GA)
AutoThrottle Disconnect Switches ( Red Buttons ) When pressed, disconnects the AutoThrottle system. The engine thrust is then adjusted to a power setting corresponding to the throttle position. If the throttle position are in the CL (normal) detent, then the thrust is commanded to full climb thrust. If the pilot wants lower thrust, he must then move the throttle backwards in a position between Idle and climb detent. Between these 2 detents, the operation of the thrust levers corresponds to the one of a conventional aircraft.
Reverse Levers Select Reverse Thrust by overriding the stop fitted at the FWD IDLE position. The stop is reset when the throttle is selected back to forward thrust.

Pitch Trim Wheels Provides mechanical control of horizontal stabilizer trim. Trim wheels have priority over electrical control. Use of trim wheels does not disconnect the ELAC’s, as the override mechanism ensures that the computers remain synchronized with the manually selected position. As opposed to conventional aircraft, the pitch trim wheel are never used in normal flight conditions. The flight guidance computer compensate for trim application automatically, so no trimming is required for the pilot. Trim wheels must be utilized when pitch direct law is in effect. Pitch trim is automatically reset to 0 following touchdown as the pitch attitude becomes less than 2.5°.
Trim Position Scales Indicate trim position in degrees. Normal range is marked by a green band.
CG Scales Indicate relation between CG location and pitch trim setting prior takeoff.
