Alphabet Activities • Trace letters (upper and lower case). • Match upper case letter cards to lower case letter cards. • Circle words that begin with the same letter. • Match words to pictures that begin with the same letter. • Write a word on the board, and leave out the initial letter/sound. Have children fill in the missing initial letter/sound in the word. • Create a letter web. Have children write or glue pictures of words beginning with a selected letter of the alphabet in a web. Example:

• Group pictures of words that begin with the same letter (e.g., bat, ball, and boy). • Have children create their own alphabet books. • Cover tables/desks in cling wrap. Have students use shaving cream to trace upper and lower case letter shapes in the cream. Children can smooth out the cream, and write new letters. Also, have students say the letter’s sound as they do this task.
• Create a word wall. Have children tell you words that begin with each letter/ sound of the alphabet. Write the words on note cards, and tape them to the word wall under the appropriate letter. • Go for a “Sound Search.” Have children go for a search around their classroom for objects that begin with the sound of a certain letter. Record what the children find on the board. You can make this activity more exciting by putting the letters of the alphabet in a grab bag. Children reach in the grab bag and pull out a letter to begin their search. • Go through books and have children listen/watch for words that begin with a particular letter of the alphabet. • Put on a Show and Tell for alphabet letters. Have children bring something with them to class that begins with a particular letter of the alphabet. • Count down the first 26 days of school with an alphabet countdown. Select one letter of the alphabet each day (starting with A and going to Z). Focus all reading books, play activites, snacks, etc., around that letter. For example, “Hh” day may include eating hot dogs for lunch and playing Hide-and-Go-Seek at recess. After you have completed each letter of the alphabet, have an Alphabet Celebration.

Blends, Digraphs & Diphthongs Activities • Have students write the letters that make a blend and/or digraph on two or three sheets of paper, writing one letter per sheet of paper. Lay the pieces of paper side by side on the floor. Have the children “walk-over” the pieces of paper as they say the sounds. • Copy and cut the letter, blend, digraph and diphthong cards provided at the beginning of each section in the book. Put the letter cards in one bag and the blend, digraph, and diphthong cards in another bag. Students pull one card from each bag, and make a word. Note: Some words will be nonsense words. • Have students wear signs that represent the two parts of a word (the initial blend or digraph, for example, “bl” and the ending sound, for example, “ock”). Have the students come to the front of the room, and stand side by side. See how many words the class can make. • Play memory matching with the cards. Copy two sets and cut. Turn the cards face down, and have the students make matches. Students who make a match must produce the sound in order to keep the match. • Write two blends or digraphs on the board that have something in common (e.g., br and gr). Have students compare the two, and talk about what is similar and what is different. Have the students give at least one word that begins with the selected blend or digraph.
