Stanza 1

Line by line meaning

And I watered it in fears.

2

Night and morning with my tears And I sunned it with smiles. And with soft deceitful wiles.

I treated my anger like a plant. A plant needs water and sunshine. Likewise, everyday I nourished my wrath with water in the form of tears and fears. I also gave my anger-tree sunshine in the form of smiles and cunning tricks.

And into my garden stole When the night had veiled the pole In the morning glad I see My foe outstretched beneath the tree
