Open Day
Bring your curiosity, optimism and passion and discover a course that’s right for you. Making the transition to university is an exciting time! It is a great time to explore different careers and what courses will get you there. To get into a university course, you’ll need to have studied certain subjects in years 11 and 12. You’ll probably be asking yourself questions like:
Monash is a five star university
Student demand Student retention Student/staff ratios Staff qualifications Cultural diversity Research intensivity
■■
“Will I make the right decision?”
■■
“What if I change my mind?”
■■
“What do I need to do now?”
■■
“What can wait until another time – when things are clearer?”
While this can seem daunting, it doesn’t have to be. It is important to remember you don’t need to choose your exact course now – but if you have an idea about the area you want to study, you can look up courses offered in that area and find out the prerequisite subjects. The main aim is to not exclude yourself from a course because you don’t have the right year 12 subjects. So make sure you get your ducks in a row so in two years time your options are wide open.

Good Universities Guide 2014

Discover
your options Let’s get started Some people know exactly what they want to be. They know what university they want to go to, what course they’ll be doing and what subjects to do to be eligible for that course. If that sounds like you, specific course information is available from page 20.
But you might still be considering your options. If this is you then we can help you start the decision-making process. Read on and discover your options at Monash!
Pick a course that will give you a career you’ll enjoy Most of our graduates will tell you this: the more energy you put into a course, the more you get out of it, with better grades and better experiences. If your course is based on something you like to do, and involves subjects you know you enjoy and are good at, you are more likely to succeed.
2
It’s always good to talk to people who know you. Talk with parents, uncles, aunts, friends, teachers and career advisers about your options and what they think you are good at. Ask professionals you know what it’s like to be an accountant, doctor, engineer, lawyer, nurse or teacher. Or try work experience – it’s a great way to get a taste of a career that interests you.

The right choice for someone else is probably not the right choice for you. To help you make the right choices, use our flow chart on the next page and start on the ‘ask yourself’ step. The flow chart will help you understand what you need to know and guide you to the parts of this brochure with more information about that issue.
While you need to choose your subjects for next year, you don’t need to choose your course All Monash courses require you to complete English. Many also require you to have either year 11 or year 12 mathematics. On top of that some science courses also require you to have studied at least one science subject. The table on page 16 clearly sets up the VCE subjects required for our courses.

Cost
Admission to university courses requires specific subjects in years 11 and 12. These are called prerequisite subjects. If you do not have these prerequisites, you will not be considered for that course – no matter what your ATAR. You may also need to achieve a minimum score in a prerequisite subject.
To enrol in an undergraduate course at Monash you must be at least 17 years old at the time of enrolment, unless:
Entry requirements can change. Please consult the Monash website closer to enrolment to confirm: study.monash/courses
All students who attend university are charged fees. However, government loans and subsidies are in place to relieve the costs for Australian citizens. These students enrol in Commonwealth supported places (CSP) and range from $6,152–$10,266 per year in 2015.
■■
you will be 16 years old at the time of enrolment and have achieved a VCE ATAR of at least 95 (or the equivalent)
■■
you will be 16 years old at the time of enrolment and you have the approval of the Dean of the faculty

All applicants for courses at Monash are required to successfully complete an English subject (any) at year 12. Other prerequisites are listed under each course entry in this guide. If there are no prerequisite subjects listed, then you do not have to do any specific subjects (other than English) for that course. However if a subject is not listed as a prerequisite, it doesn’t mean that it wont be helpful to students once they commence their course. or more information on Monash University F admissions policies, including the minimum English language requirements, age requirements and general admission information, visit adm.monash.edu/admissions
If you do not meet the age requirements (and would otherwise have been offered a place), we will offer you a deferred place. You can take up your deferred place when you meet the age requirement.
If you are studying International Baccalaureate (IB) or an interstate qualification, VTAC has compiled a handy conversion tool for you to translate VCE subjects into IB or interstate equivalents.
Most Australian students don’t pay any fees upfront thanks to the HEC-HELP loan scheme. This government loan program allows you to defer payment until your income reaches a certain threshold. For more information visit studyassist.gov.au
or more information visit F vtac.edu.au/who/meeting-prerequisites
DID YOU KNOW Some courses will have additional requirements such as submitting a folio, participating in a interview or taking a special test. Look for the ‘additional preparation’ section under the applicable courses for more details.

Diploma of Tertiary Studies (DoTS)
The Yulendj Indigenous Engagement Unit supports Indigenous Australians applying to courses at Monash. Students who meet our minimum entry requirements can apply for undergraduate courses via VTAC and should also complete a SEAS application. Indigenous Australians who do not meet minimum entrance requirements may undertake either the Indigenous Enabling Program (IEP) or the Indigenous Non-Award Pathway (INAP).
If you’ve got the drive and desire to study at university, the Diploma of Tertiary Studies can make it happen. The Diploma of Tertiary Studies (DoTS) is an alternative entry pathway to Monash if you don’t meet the requirements for direct entry into a range of Monash bachelor degrees. The DoTS program is equivalent to first year of a university undergraduate degree. You will be able to transfer into the second year of your approved chosen degree after successful completion of the DoTS program.
You are also encouraged to apply for one of the numerous scholarships Monash has specifically to support Indigenous Australians. For more information, visit monash.edu/about/indigenous/students/scholarships
You will complete six units in the stream of your choice combined with two introductory tertiary units.

Your potential to succeed at university is about more than just your ATAR. The Monash Guarantee provides fair entry for eligible students to Monash and could guarantee access to your course of choice even if your ATAR is below the clear-in. If you have experienced financial disadvantage, are in Indigenous Australian or attend a Monash listed under-represented school, you will be eligible.
Monash University understands that your potential for university study many not be reflected by your achieved ATAR due to a range of circumstances. We recognise that given the opportunity you may have the ability to succeed at university. If you are financially disadvantaged, an Indigenous Australian, have a medical condition or disability, attend school in a regional or remote area, are a refugee or come from a non-English speaking background or have suffered other personal difficult circumstances, you may be eligible for SEAS consideration. Information provided through SEAS will be used to adjust your ATAR.
If you missed the score you needed to get into Monash University, Monash College can help you. Through any of four diploma courses, Monash College can help you meet the entry requirements accepted by Monash. Diploma programs are offered in art and design, arts, business (business and commerce streams), engineering and science. Each diploma provides the opportunity to enter first or second year of selected degrees at Monash.
The Diploma of Higher Education (DoHE) lets you begin studying towards your Monash degree from day one. It is a one year course that is equivalent to the first year of a university undergraduate course and provides an alternative entry pathway into science, mathematics or related areas.

Get a head start at university
Monash Extension This program gives you a head start on your first degree by studying first-year Monash units while you are still at school. Subjects include biomedical science, chemistry, computational thinking, and economics and marketing. If you are interested you will need to achieve excellent results in year 11. For specific course information, go to monash.edu/extension. Subjects offered vary from year to year.
What sort of courses does Monash offer?
Comprehensive courses Comprehensive courses offer maximum flexibility and choice. You start studying a range of disciplines, then progressively focus on one to two study areas. Our comprehensive courses are arts, business, commerce, information technology and science.

Double degree courses Become an expert in two fields by choosing a double degree course. This allows you to study towards two different bachelor’s degrees at the same time, providing you with more career flexibility and opportunities. A double degree course takes at least two years less to complete than if you studied the two courses separately because the required units from one course count as electives in the partner course.
Specialist courses offer focus and depth from the start of the course. Some specialist courses are designed to prepare you to practice in specific profession, while others concentrate on developing particular expertise but apply to a broader range of related careers. Examples of specialist courses include architectural design, marketing, education, nursing and pharmacy.
Honours
All four-year, single-degree undergraduate courses lead to an honours degree. You may also choose to take a one-year honours course at the end of your three-year undergraduate course, focusing on a research topic within your area of expertise. Both master’s courses and bachelor’s honours degree courses can lead to a research master’s or doctorate (PhD).

A Monash double degree course takes two years less to complete than studying towards the two degrees separately. This is because the required units in one course count as electives in the other.
Arts
With every choice you make you will progressively focus on one or two study areas. When you graduate you will be an expert in your area of interest.
This means that you graduate with a qualification that reflects your passions, capabilities and expertise.
A Monash double degree course allows you to study towards two degrees at the same time, enabling you to keep your options open, develop expertise in different but complimentary areas or, simply pursue two areas of interest in depth.
Science

Architectural Design
A comprehensive course at Monash is all about developing expertise. Each course offers a range of majors for you to choose from.

Art, Design and Architecture Creative professionals, from artists and architects to animators and industrial designers, shape where and how we live, the products we use and culture we consume. At Monash, you’ll find a unique mix of art, design and architecture studies coming together in interdisciplinary studios, allowing you to collaborate with your peers from different disciplines. You’ll be studying at the heart of vibrant creative precinct – an area of the Caulfield campus of Monash University where you’ll find MUMA, Monash’s nationally recognised museum of contemporary art, the adjoining Ian Potter Sculpture Court, the Runt and Link Space student-run galleries, and our own MADA Gallery – all within walking distance of each other. With an art, design or architecture degree, a world of opportunities – and the opportunity to change the world – await you in careers in architecture, animation or industrial design.

Each applicant’s final ranking is based on a range of criteria – their interview score (where applicable), pre-selection activity / folio, and ATAR or GPA.
Pre-selection activity The pre-selection activity changes every year. Architects typically express their designs through drawings, photography, digital images, and text, but we don’t expect you to have these skills yet. You will be asked to respond to an issue through text and image and you won’t be disadvantaged if you haven’t completed Studio art or Visual communication design.
Double degree options Some of our bachelor’s courses are also available as double degrees, allowing you to combine your art, design or architecture course with a course in another discipline and graduate with two degrees instead of one. This doesn’t mean double the work – it takes at least two years less to complete than if you studied the two courses separately because the required units from one course count as electives in the other. This will: ■■
broaden your specialist knowledge
■■
diversify your skills
■■
increase career options and make you more competitive in the job market. Architectural Design

Education Teaching. It’s one of the most rewarding jobs in the world, and it’s certainly the most important. As an early childhood, primary or secondary teacher, you’ll be guiding the next generation of citizens, leaders and game-changers. Teachers change the world by helping others change theirs. But education isn’t all about teaching. We also train you in public debate, policy development, and global community action. Choose health and physical education to coach the school football club or take a track team to the Olympics. Combine your primary or secondary education specialisation with another in arts, business, commerce, computer science, information technology, science, music, or fine art. You’ll be able to put all your skills to work as you complete a minimum of 80 days professional experience throughout your course. Whatever you choose, all our courses lead to an honours degree. Tack on another year and you’ll qualify with an advanced master’s degree, putting you way ahead of the game.
