ANGLO-TAMIL STUDENTS. ^*¿ • .• • BY

WILLIAM KEVINS, ALIAS

1858.

«ai.

PREFACE. Of the great importance of an Anglo-Tamil Dictionary to the Tamulian, none can doubt. The present may appear a small one ; but the compiler trusts that it will be found on examination to be sufficient for the general wants of the Anglo-Tamil student. Accuracy, utility and cheapness were kept in vie«' in л I prep aration To avoid too great bulk, derivatives, as adverbs, par ticiples &e. have, in many cases, not been inserted, as their mean ing can be at once learned from that of the corresponding Ad jective, verb &c. The- different significations of a word are sepa rated by a Semicolon (;). Scientific and technical terms have re ceived a fair share of attention as to Tamil equivalents and. definitions. Sanscrit and Tamil words which approximate in sound or root and signification to English words, come first in the order of equivalent synonyms. /

The compiler was obliged to prepare it in the midst of other duties ; but he trusts it will be found worthy of being the AngloTamil Student's Vade-Месит ; and he hopes that it will find the same favorable reception from the Public that his Elements of Logic did. He leaves it to time and experience to demon strate its character and value. MADRAS :) April, 1858.)
