Director's Notes A Ballad was composed by Gerry Mulligan and arranged by Bob Brookmeyer for Gerry Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band. It is a feature for Gerry Mulligan with a written solo as well as an improvised solo. There is also an 8 bar improvised solo for trombone 1. This score is based on the original score with edits from the parts and the recording; The Complete Verve Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band Sessions, disc 4, track 2, Mosaic MD44-221. Some rhythms were simplified for ease of reading and to conform with standard notation. For example; two dotted quarter notes followed by a quarter note. Accidentals were also changed for ease of reading. The baritone and trombone solos were written in the original parts but not the original score, so I added them to this score, as well as the backgrounds. The 4th reed is written in the score as bass clarinet but is played on baritone on this recording. There are parts for both instruments in this collection. Trumpet I has a hand written note on the original part that it should be played on flugel horn, though it is clearly played on trumpet on this recording, and others I've heard. The mutes written in the trumpets in measures 5 through 24 are clearly not used on this recording except for the harmon mute in trumpet 4 measures 16-20. This also applies to measures 36-42 & 67-73. Ranges for all instruments are reasonable and easily playable. The challenge with this piece is to play light and with a steady tempo. The lead line is passed around among various instruments and combinations thereof, so being familiar with the original recording is strongly suggested. Ted Hogarth
