Standard Specification for

Hot-Rolled Structural Steel, High-Strength Low-Alloy Plate with Improved Formability 1 This standard is issued under the fixed designation designation A 656/A656M; the number number immediately following following the designation designation indicates the year of original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. A superscript epsilon ( e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.

1. Scope Scope

A 6/A 6M Specifi Specificat cation ion for Genera Generall Requir Requireme ements nts for Rolled Rolled Structura Structurall Steel Bars, Plates, Shapes, and Sheet Piling2

1.1 This specificati specification on covers covers high-stre high-strength, ngth, low-alloy low-alloy,, hot rolled structural steel plate for use in truck frames, brackets, crane crane booms, booms, rail cars, and similar applications applications.. Steels Steels that conform to this specification offer improved formability. These steels shall be made to a killed steel fine grain practice, and include specified alloying elements. These steels are normally furnished as rolled. The product is furnished in two types and four strength grades as agreed upon between the producer and purchaser. These types and strength level grades are shown in the tables. 1.2 The maximum maximum thickness thickness of plates plates shall be as follows: follows: Grade 50 60 70 80

3. Manufactu Manufacture re Melting Process Process—The 3.1   Melting —The stee steell shal shalll be made made by the the open-hearth, basic-oxygen, or electric-furnace process. 3.1.1 Coiled Coiled product product is excluded excluded from qualification qualification to this specification until it is decoiled, leveled and cut to length. Plate produced from coil means plate that have been cut to individual lengths from a coiled product and are furnished without heat treatmen treatment. t. The processor decoils, decoils, levels, levels, cuts to length length and marks the product. The processor is responsible for performing and certifying certifying all tests, tests, examinati examinations, ons, repairs, repairs, inspection inspectionss or operations not intended to affect the properties of the material. For plate produced from coils, two test results shall be reported for each qualifying coil.

Plate Thickness, max in. [mm] 2 [50] 11 ⁄ 2  [40] 1 [25] 3  ⁄ 4  [20]

NOTE  1—Additional requirements regarding plate produced from coil are described in Specification A 6/A 6M.

1.3 The values stated stated in either either inch-pound inch-pound units or SI units units are to be regarded as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result result in noncon nonconfor forma mance nce with with this this specifi specificat cation ion.. See Appendix X3 of Specification A 6/A 6M for information on weldability. 1.4 For plate plate produc produced ed from from coil, coil, the additi additiona onall requir requireements, ments, including including additional additional testing testing requireme requirements nts and the reporting porting of additional additional test results, results, of Specificat Specification ion A 6/A 6M apply.

4. Chemical Requirements Requirements 4.1 Heat Heat or cast cast analys analysis is shall shall confor conform m to the chemic chemical al requirements listed in Table 1. Depending on thickness, grade, and intended application, variations in the chemical composition might be used within the limits of the type specified in Table 1. Where Where it is of particul particular ar importan importance, ce, the producer producer should be consulted for specific chemical composition. 4.2   Product Analysis—If a produc productt analys analysis is is made, made, the material shall conform to the requirements of Table 1 subject to the product analysis tolerances of Specification A 6/A 6M. 4.3 When When steel steel is to be welded welded,, it is presup presuppos posed ed that a welding procedure suitable for the grade of steel and intended use or service will be utilized. 4.4 Unless Unless specifically specifically ordered, ordered, the type is at the discretion discretion of the producer.
