HFF'I'Y YEARS OF DOWN BEAT SOLO JAZZ TRANSCRIPTIONS A REGISTER Terry S. Koger assisted by Mark Martin, Gary Richardson, Hassan Sabree, and Anthony Wade Introduction

Offered here is a directory to the jazz solo transcriptions that appear in Down Beat from 1934, the journal's first year, through 1984. The m entries are organized by volume and issue number, with indexes cari for access by the performer, title, and instrument.

The format includes date of publication, pagination, name of the p former and, when identified, the title of the tune. Notes are provided indicate the presence or absence of chords, transcriptions, annotation and source recordings if stated in the publication. The entries conclu with the initials of the individual responsible for the contribution. Reference to these transcriptions should prove valuable for perform and scholars alike, offering as they do a great deal of information on

performers' style even though, as with a recording, it is one version that i

fixed.

Terry Koger and Anthony Wade conceived the need for this projec while undergraduate students at Morgan State University, enlisting aid of classmates as they individually examined the holdings of Morg State University's Soper Library, Baltimore's municipal Enoch Pratt F Library, and the Library of Congress. Missing from all of these librar were vlnl, v2n6-9, v3n6-7, and v3nl0-11. The microfilm of the earlies issues at the Library of Congress generally regarded as quite rare, in cludes reproductions from imperfect copies. This work was undertaken as an independent, non-curricular ventu by a quintet of instrumentalists seeking to broaden their experiences w

the dimension of research. Percussionist Mark Martin, saxophon

Terry Koger, and Anthony Wade, clarinetist and pianist, had worked

me in the preparation of several volumes of The Bibliography of Black Mus

and were joined in this project by bassist Gary Richardson and saxoph

ist Hassan Sabree.

All of the work was supervised in its final stages by Mr. Koger, whose concern for the project brought it to fruition, aided with computer applications. With this, his first formal publication, we encounter the name of a

gifted young man who is contemplating a career in music research, one which I foresee as being major.
