Volkswagen

emissions scandal hits 11M vehicles

The scandal that Volkswagen has been involved in is dubbed the “diesel dupe ”. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that many VW cars being sold in America had devices in diesel engines that could detect when they were being tested, changing the performance accordingly to improve results. The German car giant has since admitted cheating emissions tests in the US. VW has had a major push to sell diesel cars in the US, backed by a huge marketing campaign trumpeting its cars’ low emissions. The EPA’s findings cover 482,000 cars in the US only, including the VW-manufactured Audi A3, and the VW brands Jetta, Beetle, Golf and Passat. But VW has admitted that about 11 million cars worldwide, including eight million in Europe, are fitted with the socalled “defeat device’’. Full details of how it worked are sketchy, although the EPA has said that the engines had computer software that could sense test scenarios by monitoring speed, engine operation, air pressure and even the position of the steering wheel. When the cars were operating under controlled laboratory conditions - which typically involve putting them on a stationary test rig - the device appears to have put the vehicle into a sort of safety mode in which the engine ran below normal power and performance. Once on the road, the engines switched out of this test mode emitting nitrogen oxide pollutants up to 40 times above what is allowed in the US. “We’ve totally screwed up,” said VW America boss Michael Horn, while the group’s chief executive at the time, Martin Winterkorn, said his company had “broken the trust of our customers and the public”. Mr Winterkorn has now left the company as a direct result of the scandal and has been replaced by Matthias Mueller, the former boss of Porsche. With VW recalling almost 500,000 cars in the US alone, it has set aside €6.5bn (£4.7bn) to cover costs. The carmaker has emission scandal to hit to dub dupe device engine performance accordingly to improve results to admit major push to back to trumpet to manufacture

said it will begin recalling cars in January. But that’s unlikely to be the end of the financial impact. The EPA has the power to fine a company up to $37,500 for each vehicle that breaches standards - a maximum fine of about $18bn. Legal action from consumers and shareholders may follow, and there is speculation that the US Justice Department will launch a criminal probe. Then, of course, there is the cost of fixing all the cars. source: BBC

Playboy magazine abandons nudity Sixty-two years after its debut publication - which featured Marilyn Monroe as its inaugural centrefold - Playboy magazine has decided to make a major change and offer no more nudity in print. The publication decided to jump off the nudity train once and for all last month, when chief content officer Cory Jones approached the mag’s founder and reigning editor-inchief, Hugh Hefner, with his proposal to revert to a PG-13 publication that features “ a little more intimate” offerings. The decision was reportedly based on a multitude of factors, beginning with the fact that it’s already employed the no nudes approach within its digital realm. And it was apparently a hugely successful move — the site’s user traffic saw a quadruple jump, from four million to 16 million unique users per month. And since its magazine circulation has dropped from 5.6 million in 1975 to around 800,000 today, a shake-up is definitely in order. Secondly, the Playboy team now believes that the original purpose of the magazine - to revolutionize the picture of

In a study released this week, scientists said elephant genes may provide a crucial clue in the fight against human cancer. The mammoth mammals rarely get cancer, which has long bewildered scientists considering elephants have 100 times as many cells as humans. The cancer mortality rate for elephants is less than 5% compared with 25% in people, the study said. The reason for this is that elephants have extra genes that stop tumors long before they form. They have “at least 40 copies o f genes that code for p53, a protein well known for its cancer-inhibiting properties,” scientists said. In comparison, humans have only two copies of such genes. The massive animals also detect damaged cells preemptively, which they then repair or kill. “Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer, ” Joshua Schiffman, one of the study’s author and a pediatric clue cancer gene to bewilder cell mortality rate study

The Egyptian pharaoh queen Nefertiti could be buried in King lUtankhamun’s tomb British archaeologist, Nicholas Reeves says he believes there may be two hidden doorways behind Tutankhamun’s burial chamber, leading to two undiscovered rooms.

were found in 1922. Dr Reeves developed his theory after a Spanish company of artistic and preservation specialists were commissioned to produce detailed scans of Tutankhamun’s tomb.

Egyptian officials plan to use radar equipment to test Mr Reeves’ theory that Nefertiti’s remains were placed in one of them.

While assessing the scans last February, Dr Reeves spotted what he believed were marks indicating where two doorways used to be. The archaeologist says he believes Nefertiti may lie inside. “ If it is true, we are facing a discovery that would overshadow the discovery of Tutankhamun himself,” Egypt’s Antiquities Minister Mamdouh elDamaty said. source: BBC

Mr Reeves believes the remains of Tutankhamun, who died 3,000 years ago aged 19, may have been rushed into an outer chamber of what was originally Nefertiti’s tomb. The remains of Tutankhamun, who may have been Nefertiti’s son, to bury tomb archaeologist doorway chamber equipment remains artistic

The Mag Wonderland

b y Á gnes Satánki and István Dezsényi

“Who in the world am I? Ah, that’s the

150 years ago Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a mathematics professor at Oxford University, better known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll, published a book about a bored little girl called Alice, who falls down a rabbit hole in pursuit of the White Rabbit who is running around with a pocket watch in his hand saying to himself “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late.” The rabbit hole leads into a nonsense world of strange but delightful characters, like the Mad Hatter, The Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts and the March Hare. Familiar characters, aren’t they? Probably most children meet Alice at a certain point of their childhood as the story was translated into about 174 languages and is wellknown all around the world. 2 0 15

THIS MONTH

Though the story of A lice’s Adventures in Wonderland takes the readers to an imaginary world, it was inspired by real events and a real child. On 4th July, 1862, five people set out In a boat for a picnic. Charles L. Dodgson travelled downriver with the Dean of Christ Church, Oxford and his three daughters, Alice, Edith and Lorina. Along the way he told the family a story about a little girl, Alice, who goes looking for an adventure. He was a natural storyteller who regularly invented new stories to entertain his friends, so he knew that for the stories to work and to spark the imagination, the child herself must be at the centre of the story. The family loved the tale and at the end of that day, the daughter, Alice Liddell, who was 10 years old then and gave her name to the main character, asked for the story to be written down. Charles Dodgson agreed and began writing the manuscript the next day. It eventually took him tw o and a half years to complete. Alice - the main character - falls asleep and in her dream she meets various creatures who usually don’t make sense, the situations they are part of are queer and making no sense with hidden meanings and messages you can’t make head or tail of - but make

you laugh anyway. Lewis Carroll - with his excellent sense of humour makes fun of some ridiculous British custom s in the book, and he doesn’t even make an exception of the reigning Queen and her husband, either. He makes fun of them, too. “A ll in the golden afternoon Full leisurely we g lid e ; For both our oars, with little skill, By little arms are plied, While little hands make vain p re te n s e Our wanderings to guide. ” ... starts the story, though that golden afternoon was probably cool, cloudy and rainy. The journey began at Folly Bridge near Oxford and ended five miles away in the village of Godstow. The creatures that appear in the story are weird and the events happening are usually strange. You have to be familiar with British culture and the world of nursery rhymes to be able to understand them. One of the creatures is for example the Cheshire cat who “grins like a Cheshire cat”, but in the end unbelievably loses Its grin. “ Well! I’ve often seen a cat w ithout a g rin ” thought Alice, “b u t a grin w ithout a cat! It’s the m ost curious thing I ever saw in all my life!” Or the Mad Hatter and the March Hare whose characters originate from the sayings “ as mad as a hatter” or “ as mad as a March hare” and have a tea party in the story where no one eats or drinks anything. The Hatter reveals to Alice that they have tea all day because Time has punished him by eternally standing still at 6 pm (tea time). The Queen of Hearts is a foul-tem pered monarch, “a blind fury”, who is quick to decree death sentences at the slightest offense. Her most famous line, one

which she often repeats, is “O ff with their heads!” The Queen is believed to be a caricature of Queen Victoria and is based on a nursery rhyme: “ The Queen o f Hearts she made some tarts all on a sum m er’s day; The Knave o f Hearts he stole the tarts and took them clean away. The King o f Hearts called fo r the tarts and beat the Knave full sore The Knave o f Hearts brought back the tarts and vo w e d he ’d steal no more. ” Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was a blockbuster already when it was first published. At that time the author himself financed the publishing of his w ork and in this way he had some say in the final outcome. The story was published by Macmillan. Lewis wanted the book covered in bright red instead of the usual Macmillan green so that it would stand out of others. Moreover, Lewis Carroll was a good businessman and was way ahead in marketing among his contemporaries. He was one of the first authors who saw the significance of related products and he designed a postage stamp case decorated with images of Alice and allowed her image to adorn cookie tins and other products. Later, he created a shorter version of the book for even younger readers to make the book sell even more. The title of the book originally had more pen name hole in pursuit of delightful Mad Hatter March Hare hare imaginary dean to spark the imagination manuscript can’t make head or tail of sg to reign to glide oar to ply pretense weird grins like a Cheshire cat grin eternally Queen of Hearts foul-tempered fury

It’s not only Lewis Carroll’s w ords that captured the readers’ imagination. John Tenniel’s illustrations brought the story to life and gave the characters their distinctive features they are remembered by even today. John Tenniel was a well-known cartoonist for the political magazine Punch. Carroll admired his drawings of animals in an edition of Aesop’s Fables and after some attem pts of illustrating the story himself, he asked Tenniel to make the illustrations for A lice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Tenniel agreed. Today, when most people think of Alice with her blue dress, blonde hair and Alice band, it’s Tenniel’s illustrations they’re remembering. John Tenniel’s illustrations of Alice do not portray the real Alice Liddell, who had dark hair and a short fringe. The illustrations for the Alice books first were drawn and then were engraved onto blocks of wood, to be printed in the wood engraving process. Alice was a publishing sensation when it was printed, beloved by children and adults alike. Among its first keen readers were Queen Victoria and the young Oscar Wilde. The book has never been out of print ever since. There have now been over a hundred English-language editions of the book, as well as countless adaptations in other media, especially theatre and film including the extremely popular 2010 Disney movie. Alice in W onderland and its sequel - Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There - have also inspired numerous live performances, ballets, musicals, operas, plays, and traditional English pantomimes. Alice is a very popular character depicted on various objects, gifts and souvenirs. There’s a world famous shop in Oxford which is dedicated to Alice in W onderland memorabilia. It is situated opposite the home of the real Alice. “Oh, I ’ve had such a curious dream! said A lice." country is Rabat and the largest city is Casablanca. Other major cities include Marrakesh, Tangier, Tetouan, Salé, Fes, Agadir, Meknes, Oujda, Kenitra and Nador. Morocco has a history of independence, unlike most of its neighbours. Its distinct cultural blend of Arab, indigenous Berber, Sub-Saharan African and European influences can be traced in its architecture, cuisine, art and literature. M orocco is tailor-m ade for travellers: the landscape and the possible adventures are so diverse that a single trip may contain trekking the mountains, visiting the desert and soaking in the sea. M oroccan people are closely connected to the environment despite their m odernity. Traditional life continues in many com m unities and European travellers can easily catch a glimpse of lifestyles very much different from their own.

Marrakesh Many people say that Marrakesh is M orocco’s most intoxicating city - it is also called the “Jewel of the South” . The city has quite a colourful history. It was always stubbornly defended against marauding tribes by successive sultans. For many travellers, its labyrinth Medina - old city, the native residential district - is the star attraction. The Medina has been virtually unchanged since medieval times. Simply wandering around is an amazing experience, but there are many shopping opportunities as well. The large square at the entry is the centre of Marrakesh life.

Morocco is rather easy to reach from Hungary by plane. Plane tickets start from 80,000 HUF, but If you plan your travel in time, budget airlines offer return tickets from around 25,000 HUF, making the trip a lot more affordable. Booking a place to stay is easy and quick online, as a wide range of accommodation options is available from budget hostels to 5-star hotels. The price of mid-range hotels start from around 50 euros, but there are lots of deals to find as well. The Kingdom of Morocco is one of three countries (besides Spain and France) to have both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. The country is a constitutional monarchy with an elected parliament. M orocco’s predominant religion is Islam, while the official languages are Berber and Arabic. Moroccan Arabic (Darija) and French are also widely spoken. Morocco has a population of over 33.8 million and an area of 446,550 sq km. The political capital of the

The mosque was built in 1162 and is one of the great achievements of Almohad architecture. An im portant historic sight in Marrakesh is the tom b of Saadian Sultan Ahmed al-Mansour ed-Dahbi, who died in 1603 and spared no expense on his resting place. Built of imported Carrara marble and decorative plasterwork with pure gold, the Chamber of the 12 Pillars is a glorious mausoleum. There are tom bs of his favourite princes, chancellors and wives, but all the other tom bs are overshadowed by his m other’s mausoleum in the courtyard. Accessible only through a small passage in the Kasbah Mosque, the mausoleum was neglected by all (except the storks) until aerial photography exposed it in 1917. Casablanca is the main gateway into the country, as it is home to M orocco’s primary international airport. Though it lives in our memory as the backdrop of Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey B ogart’s timeless love story, the city is probably not that rom antic today. Casablanca is an industry and business centre and it has a more modern feel than other parts of the country. The Medina district, though, is a charming area, much smaller and therefore easier to navigate than those elsewhere. Although it may not have such an exotic atmosphere as the Medinas of Fes and Marrakesh, the alleyways still offer a lot. Moroccan cuisine is highly popular everywhere and no wonder: it is influenced by the country’s interactions and exchanges with other cultures and is a mix of Mediterranean, Arabic, Andalusian and Berber cuisine. Don’t leave Morocco without trying some of its traditional spicy foods. B ’ssara, for example, is a rich soup of dried broad beans with cumin served with fresh bread. Tagine is another highly popular dish; it got its name after the clay cooking pot. Morocco boasts a rich array of fish dishes. Fish chermoula Is one of them: a combination of herbs and spices used as a marinade before grilling over coals, and as a dipping sauce. During Ramadan, the fast is broken at sunset each day with a steaming bowl of harira soup rich with tom atoes, lentils, chickpeas and lamb. Moroccan meals begin with various vegetable salads to scoop up with bread, such as zaalouk, a smoked and seasoned aubergin dip. ‘W e are delighted to start the partnership and extremely happy that a company with such a high international reputation has chosen our 33-year-oid family business for the partnership. It is a responsibility, we are working very hard to meet the high standards o f Jamie Oliver and let Hungarian people experience the high quality Italian kitchen - that is also affordable, and in a relaxed setting,” said Roy Zsidai, CEO of the Group.

In Britain there are about 40 Jamie Oliver restaurants and they are highly popular. They offer well-known tasty dishes at affordable prices, not something fancy or luxurious, and are known for their friendly and welcoming service. After Istanbul, Rotterdam and Moscow, Budapest will be the next European city where Jamie Oliver’s Italian chain will open a restaurant. Jam ie’s Italian will replace Hadik restaurant in the historical Castle District, near Matthias Church, with an open kitchen and a terrace overlooking the beautiful church. The franchise restaurant will be opened in partnership with the Zsidai Gastronomy Group. 16

The restaurant’s interiors are designed by the franchise chain’s own interior architects. It will serve dishes using the best ingredients, mostly from Hungary and the surrounding region. It’s im portant that the ingredients should always be fresh and GMO free. Sustainability, ethical animal treatment and animal welfare are also very im portant features when choosing the ingredients. The restaurant will use only Jam ie’s recipes, and customers will be able to order a la carte, but daily menus and daily specials will also be available. Of course, they will serve Italian pasta every day. Jam ie’s Italian wants the best personnel and is looking for Hungary’s most passionate chefs and hospitality professionals. Jamie Oliver is very excited about his new restaurant: “Opening a restaurant in Budapest is hugely exciting. We w ork hard to find the best ingredients from producers who share our ethos and take enormous pride in what they do. We train our staff to have a thorough knowledge of all the dishes that we serve. We teach the origin of each dish, how the dishes have been created and cooked, and the personalities and stories behind them all. Italian was designed to be accessible and affordable, a neighbourhood restaurant where everyone is welcome and feels comfortable, no matter what the tim e of day. The focus is on exceptional food and good company.

Jamie Oliver Jamie Oliver became one of the w o rld ’s most recognizable chefs because of his cooking show “The Naked Chef” in the UK and his efforts to bring healthy, whole food to school lunch programmes in the US on his show Jamie Oliver’s “ Food Revolution” to change the way Americans eat, and address their dependence on fast food. Oliver’s global brand includes dozens of Jam ie’s Italian restaurants, over 20 cookbooks, and multiple TV series that run from reality-based cooking shows to culinary travelogues. Various sources list him as the second wealthiest celebrity chef. His series “Jamie at Home” ran on Hungarian television, so probably he has many fans In Hungary, too.

About Jamie Oliver’s Italian . The first Italian was opened in Oxford in 2008 and was inspired by his passion for the Italian way of life. As he himself states it: “Since I was a teenager I’ve been totally besotted by the love, passion and verve for food, family and life itself that just about all Italian people have, no matter where they’re from or how rich or poor they might be. And th a t’s what I’m passionate about - good food for everyone, no matter w hat... FREE DIVING W ith W ild life Two French freedivers and photographers have taken an incredible selection of photos whilst diving with underwater wildlife. From whales to stingrays, turtles and sharks, Alex Voyer and Alex Roubaud have been freediving for over 10 years. Alex Roubaud says: "Freediving is n o t a dangerous activity as we respect the elem entary rules o f safety, and diving with a buddy is the first and vital rule! Working together is essential fo r us. We know the o ther p erfectly and a few words are enough to understand each o ther ” As both divers live in Paris, they are unable to freedive every day and as a result, both practice static and dynam ic freediving in different pools. “It’s n o t really fu n ” explains Roubaud, “b u t it helps to be in a g o o d condition when w e ’re in the oceans and especially to develop o u r m am m alian reflex. ”

Photographer Snaps Underwater Bear From Safety Of Cage A photographer climbed into an iron cage so he could take pictures of a hungry brown bear. The cage, in the middle of a shallow river, was built by Mike Korostelev so he could capture close-ups of the bear fishing in the water. The 33-year-old entered the cage by diving under water and spent the day photographing the 16-year-old animal who at times was only 1 m away. The travel organiser was at the Ozernaya river near Kuril Lake in Kamchatka, Russia, to photograph the impressive mammal. The brown bear sat in the cold water, where temperatures were around eight degrees Celsius, before diving under looking for fish. He was able to hold his breath for up to 20 seconds in the 1m deep water as he lunged for fishes and was able to catch around five for his dinner. Mike said: “It was incredible. The bear was fishing in the river. He sat down, p u t his head under the water and paused, looking for fish. Once the fish started to ignore him and came closer, he made a crucial lunge and caught the fish by his paws or teeth - whatever was easier in that moment. The brown bear would p u t his head under the water for about 20 seconds until he to snap iron cage shallow to capture close-up to enter at times mammal to lunge for to pause to ignore

attacked the fish. Then he repeated the action until he was successful. He would freeze before making his catch. I was also frozen in the water so as not to frighten the fish and to make sure I d id n ’t disturb the bear. It was amazing. Fish swam through the cage, touching me and then, suddenly, the bear made an abrupt lunge and I took these photos. He hunted almost entirely in silence. The only sounds came from his breathing and from the crunch when he ate the fish. This bear came to this place in the river several times a day. Each time he caught about five fish and then went for a rest to the beach before returning again and starting over. I constructed this cage so that I could photograph a bear from a shorter distance. I g o t into the cage through a large hole under the water and waited for the bear to come close for fishing. He was interested only in fishing and d id not pay any attention to me. A t some points he was only 1m away from me. I took photos o f the bear all day long, and only went home when it began to grow dark. ” Brown bears are omnivores and can grow up to 8ft (2.5m) tall and weigh around 700lbs (318kg). lunge paw to attack to freeze to frighten to disturb abrupt crunch to grow dark omnivore

Sugar traps: the not-so-sweet facts of your sugar intake The sugar content of processed food is one of the biggest health concerns in our modern society. Each and every gulp and bite may contain a lot more sugar than you would think. The increased sugar intake results in obesity and various diseases directly related to obesity. Jamie Oliver, the popular TV chef has British ministers to introduce a sugar tax on fizzy drinks. He told MPs on the House of Commons’ Health Committee a tax would be the most important change that could be made, a “big and b o ld ” move definitely having an impact on child obesity. Jamie said the estimated 20% sugar tax could raise up to a £1 bn a year in the UK, a sum that could be shared between the NHS and primary schools. He started the campaign with Introducing a levy on soft drinks with added sugar in his own restaurants and said: ‘We should be big and bold. Who is running the country? The businesses who are profiting from ill health or is it us?”

Most of us are absolutely aware that sweets should be eaten only in moderation. But some food and drinks contain a surprising amount of sugar, meaning that you could be consuming much more than you should. There are so called “sugar traps”, foods that are considered healthy or savoury, but still contain lots of hidden sugar. Extra sugar is added to some products because it makes them taste better. For example, when fat is removed from a processed meal, sugar is often added to help disguise the blander taste. Many foods we think of as wholesome - like yoghurt, granola bars, low -fat snacks and fruit-flavoured water - may actually contain much more sugar than necessary and healthy. This can result in us eating more sugar than our bodies can handle, because simply we don’t always know when w e ’re eating it. Scaling back on our sugar intake is one of the most important steps in achieving a healthy lifestyle, but with so many sugars hiding in our everyday foods, it is becoming harder than ever to do. The numbers are surprisingly high: Greek yogurt can contain up to 20 grams of sugar; some salad dressings have up to 10 grams of sugar per serving; while 1 tablespoon of ketchup contains around 4 grams of added sugar.

Although Jamie Oliver is determined in his efforts to change British obesity, ministers have indicated a tax will not be introduced at the moment. Jamie said, though, he did not believe that it had been “written o ff” entirely.

Many scientists suggest that we desire sugar at an instinctive level, since it plays such a vital role in our survival. Our sense of taste has evolved to want the molecules vital to life like salt, fat and sugar. When we eat food, the simple sugar glucose is absorbed from the intestines into the bloodstream and distributed to all cells of the body. Glucose is particularly im portant to the brain as it provides a major source of fuel to the billions of neuronal nerve cells. Neurons need a constant supply from the bloodstream as they don’t have the ability to store glucose themselves. Interestingly enough, scientists have found even just the taste of sugar can give our brains a boost. Tests have shown that participants who swill water sweetened by sugar around their mouths perform better on mental tasks than when they gargle artificially sweetened water. The human relationship with sugar starts at birth as we are born with a sweet tooth. A recent study from Washington University found that newborns have a distinct preference for sweet flavours over other flavours, and children enjoy sugary foods far more than adults.

WHO calls on countries to cut sugar intake The World Health Organisation says the world is eating too much sugar and people should cut their intake to ju s t six to 12 teaspoons per day an amount that could be exceeded with a single can of soda d a ily a v e r a g e s u g ar co nsu m ptio n per person

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends adults and children reduce their daily consumption of added sugars to less than 10% of total energy intake. For women, this is the equivalent of around 25 grams of sugar a day, and for men, about 37 grams. “ We trap sugar intake content processed food concern gulp bite obesity disease tax fizzy drinks MP House of Commons Committee bold move impact on estimated NHS (National Health Service) levy on determined effort in moderation amount to consume savoury

According to a scientific hypothesis, the child’s preference for sweet things is an evolutionary hangover, as youngsters who preferred high-calorle foods would have had a better chance of survival when food sources were unreliable. The problem now is that refined sugar is too readily available. This could be part of the reason why childhood obesity rates have increased rapidly. It is now recommended by healthcare professionals that parents avoid giving babies sweet things to eat or drink to try to stop them developing a preference for them early in life.

Film Sets A French Museum is home to a series of amazingly realistic miniature film sets. The Musee Miniature et Cinema, in Lyon, France, contains over 100 of the microfilm-sets. The tiny scenes have been produced by a selection of talented artists and use ,hyperrealism ’ so the audience believe the set Is life-size. Each scene contains

miniscule objects that w ould have been seen in an actual film set. In the pictures, intricately detailed sets can be seen, such as a tiny museum with book shelves, chairs and books. In another picture, a film set show s an old abandoned m iniature theatre, featuring dusty red chairs. The miniature collection presents m ost o f Dan O hlm ann’s pieces together with those of several other artists, such as Ronan Jim Sevellec, Michel Perez, Laurie C ourbier and Alan Wolfson. Lift Weights and Get Smarter by Agnes Salánki and István Dezsényi

Do you ever watch the Olympic Games? Probably yes, as most of us do. Do you remember those moments when you are glued to the screen watching / all muscle and impressively strong / men trying to lift huge weights which f look impossible to lift? Most of the time - after quite a lot of concentrating,% heaving and panting - their attempt is successful, they manage to lift the weight and everybody cheers for them with a relieved sigh. W eightlifting is a popular sport, but not everyone can do it. You have to be really muscular, strong and fit to do w eightlifting. You d o n ’t, however, have to be big in order to be strong; som etim es short and slim people can lift unbelievably heavy weights. As they saying goes: “Small rain lays great dust.” W eightlifting is m ostly m an’s sport but not exclusively. A t the Olym pic Games w om en have also been able to compete, though only since 2000. The first m en’s world championship took place in 1891 in London with only seven athletes from six countries. Now combined - men and women - championships are held. Last year more than 400 men and nearly 300 women took part. Budapest hosted the event twice, in 1962 and 1990. This year the event will be held in the USA, in Houston, between 20th and 29th of November. China has won the highest number of medals so far, while Hungary is ranked 12th among the nations, with 11 gold and a total of 91 medals. One of the most famous Hungarian welghtllfters is Imre Földi, an Olympic champion in 1972 who took part in a record of five Olympic Games and after setting several world records went on to coach his daughter to win 16 European titles.

their head. If you have ever w atched w eightlifting, you m ust have noticed that there are tw o standard lifts in modern w eightlifting: the single-m ovem ent lift from flo o r to extended position (the snatch), and the tw o-m ovem ent lift from floor to shoulder position, and from shoulders to extended position (the clean and jerk). In the O lym pic Games program m e the athlete attem pts a m axim um -w eight single lift o f a barbell loaded w ith w eight plates. Each w eightlifter receives three attem pts in either snatch or clean and jerk, and the com bined total of the highest tw o successful lifts

What happens In w eightlifting is fairly simple: w eightlifters lift barbells or other heavy w eights above

If they are unsuccessful, they have the option of reattempting at that weight or trying a heavier weight after any other com petitors have made attempts at the previous weight or any other Intermediate weights. The barbell Is loaded incrementally and progresses to a heavier weight throughout the course of the com petition. Weights are set in 1 kilogram increments. When a tie occurs, the athlete with the lower bodyweight is declared the winner. If two athletes lift the same total weight and have the same bodyweight, the winner is the athlete who lifted the total weight first.

Singlet Lifters typically wear a one-piece, close-fitting leotard often called a singlet. Wearing a T-shirt under the singlet Is optional.

Weightlifting Belt A weightlifting belt of 120mm maximum width may also be worn to provide lower back support.

During com petition, the snatch event takes place first, followed by a short intermission, and then the clean and jerk event. There are tw o side judges and one head referee who together give a “successful” or “failed” result for each attem pt based on their observation of the lift. Two successes are required for any attempt to pass. Usually, the judges’ and referee’s results are registered with a white light indicating a “ successful” lift and a red light indicating a “failed” lift.

Equipment Barbell Olympic weightlifting uses a steel bar (also known as a barbell) with larger-diameter rotating sleeves on either end, holding rubber-coated discs of different weights. A men’s Olympic barbell weighs 20 kg (44 lbs) with a

Chalk Chalk is regularly used by lifters, prior to each attempt at a lift. They rub their hands with the chalk to promote dryness and prevent the bar moving in their hands. In addition to the hands, chalk can be applied to the neck, usually above the collarbone, which is a key point of contact for the bar during a clean and jerk.

Weightlifting Shoes W eightlifting shoes are typically designed with a raised heel. The raised heel helps the lifter maintain an upright position while catching the bar and also allows for a deeper squat under the bar. The soles of the shoes are quite rigid, helping to resist compression while under heavy loads. The shoes are designed for maximum stability while remaining flexible in the toe part. This allows the lifter to come up on the toes and to catch the w eight on the ball of the back foot during the “jerk” m ovem ent of the lift.

It makes you smarter W eightlifting has become quite popular not only as a professional sport but as a sport you can do in a gym just for fun or to keep fit. If you want bigger muscles and an athletic, well-built body, w eightlifting is the sport for you. Strength training is not just about bodybuilders lifting weights in a gym. It improves insulin sensitivity and decreases your risk of developing diabetes. Strength training may also improve your mental health. It can help relieve depression and anxiety, reduce fatigue and make you more energetic. Moreover: Weightlifting makes you smarter. Brazilian researchers found that six months of resistance training enhanced lifters’ cognitive function. In fact, the sessions resulted in better short- and long-term memory, improved verbal reasoning, and a longer attention span. So instead of sitting at home or at school and hopelessly trying to cram Information into your head try a session of weightlifting at the gym. Having spent most of his youth travelling from country to country, singer-songwriter Mika has got a lot to say about his experiences Many people think that Mika has created a realm completely secluded from the “ real w orld” , it’s almost like living in Neverland: rebelling against the Idea of growing up with songs of childlike curiosity and fresh-faced enthusiasm. His die-hard followers are quite diverse, but his first tw o albums, Life in Cartoon Motion and The Boy Who Knew Too Much, are massive successes, garnering comm erciallyrelated accolades including Grammy Awards. His fourth album, out on June 26, radiates a slightly different world view. The relatively grow n-up material questions the afterlife, and attempts to understand heaven and the concept of paradise after death. Michael Holbrook Penniman, Jr., a.k.a. Mika was born on A ugust 18, 1983 in Beirut. He is a Lebanese-born British singer and songwriter. Mika is the third of five children born to a Lebanese m other and an American father. Due to the war, the fam ily was forced to move to Paris when he was just one year old and then relocated to London four years later. He w rote his first song at age seven; it was called “A ngry". Later he attended W estm inster School and the Royal College of Music, w hich he left to record his first album at Casablanca Records. As a child Mika was trained

by Alla Ardakov (Ablaberdyeva), a Russian opera professional, and later attended the Royal College of Music in London. Mika speaks French, Spanish and Italian, fluently. In an Interview he commented that he had taken Mandarin Chinese for 9 years but did not speak it very well; he also mentioned that his three sisters did all speak it fluently. He also speaks some Arabic with a Lebanese dialect, his mother’s native tongue. Mika’s first single was “Relax, Take It Easy" in 2006. “ The Dodgy Holiday” EP also became available for download. His debut album “Life in Cartoon M otion” was released in 2007 to critical acclaim. The main theme of the album was the “coming of age” experience dealing with the transition from childhood to adulthood. In the same year, he toured the United States and then began his “Dodgy Holiday Tour", playing at venues across Europe. Before releasing his second studio album, he had an extended play titled “Songs for S orrow " in 2009, including four tracks and a book featuring lyrics and illustrated interpretations. His second album “ The Boy Who Knew Too M u ch " was released in September 21, 2009. It was reported that Mika spent £25,000 on drinks after inviting fans to join him at his local pub via Twitter to celebrate the release of his single, “ We Are Golden”. Following the great success of the album, Mika performed “R ain" and “ We Are Golden live at the Sydney Opera House for the Australian Idol Grand Final.

internationally in 2012. In 2013, Mika became the new judge on the seventh season of the X Factor Italy, replacing Arisa. He was the first international mentor on the show, but, as he is fluent In Italian, the language barrier was not a problem. In the same year, Mika released a compilation album in Italy titled “Songbook Vol. 1” including music from his three previous albums, as well as new tracks. On January 17, 2014, Mika took part in the Italian television show “Le Invasioni Barbariche” , and performed a duet with the Nobel Prize in Literature recipient Dario Fo of the song “Ho visto un Re”, written by Dario Fo. He has also joined the French The Voice: la plus belle voix on the third and fourth seasons another opportunity where his extended language skills came in handy. Mika’s fourth and latest album, “No Place in Heaven” , was released in June, 2015. He shared about his latest milestone: “It takes a really serious person to stay playful. I think that it ’s really right in the heart o f this record, that playful quality, that kind o f devilish attitude. Talking about everything from love to politics to my own family and giving myself a license with good hum or to say things that I w ould never normally say. The others were about coming o f age and grow ing up. This one’s about growing down in order to grow up properly - in order to stay the same person, you know? N ot to slowly extinguish that playfulness that is there much more readily when w e’re younger. ” He said in an Interview with Out that after the age of 30, he had m ade a prom ise to stop isolating him self so much and to be a bit more care free and candid - and this Is exactly w hat he did w ith his new album.

His next album was “ The Origin o f Love” . He described it as less childlike and more serious. As a young boy, Daniel began perform ing in small school productions and in 1999 he landed a role in BBC O ne’s tw o -p a rt adaptation o f David C opperfield. Two years later, he played Mark Pendel in The T a ilo r o f Panama (2001), his “film parents” were Geoffrey Rush and Jam ie Lee Curtis. Curtis had pointed out to Daniel’s mother that he could be Harry Potter himself and soon afterwards, he was cast as Harry by director Chris Colom bus. Daniel told in an interview that he tried reading the first Harry Potter book when he was 8 years old, but was unable to finish it, but finally read the entire book when he was cast in the lead role o f the film. Harry P o tte r an d the S o rc e re r’s Stone hit theaters in 2001, and Harry P otter and the C h a m b e r o f Secrets in 2002. He reprised the role in H arry P otter and the Prisoner o f Azkaban (2004), directed by Alfonso Cuaron, and then appeared in Harry P o tte r and the G o b le t o f Fire (2005),directed by Mike Newell. The movies proved to be box office hits and Daniel Radcliffe gained w orldw ide recognition after the release of the first film.

ELETÚT

Like m any child actors, Daniel also suffered the consequences o f being rich and fam ous very soon. Although he thinks o f himself as a dow n-to-earth person, he was battling with alcoholism at quite a young age. “The drinking was unhealthy and dam aging,” he said in an interview. “ I was living in constant fear o f w ho I’d meet, w hat I m ight have said to them, w hat I m ight have done with them , so I’d stay in m y apartm ent for days and drink alone. I was a recluse at 20. It was pathetic — it w asn’t me. I’m a fun, polite person and it turned me into a rude bore.” He gave up drinking fo r good at the age of 21 and he has been a teetotaller ever since. His latest project is Victor Frankenstein opposite James MacAvoy: the w ell-know n story is told from Igor’s perspective this time. “ People will always rem ember Harry, but I think if I w ork hard enough other characters will stick in their m inds as w ell,” and Igor will probably be one of them.

Before the fifth movie H arry P o tte r and the O rder o f the Phoenix (2007), he finished film ing D ecem ber Boys (2007) in Australia. 2007 was quite a busy year for the young actor, as he to o k on his first stage role in the W est End play Equus, to w orldw ide praise from fans and critics alike and he also starred in the television movie M y Boy Jack. The last three instalments of the magical tale cam e out in 2009, 2010 and 2011, respectively. Daniel turned to different roles after Harry’s last encounter with Voldem ort. He starred in K ill Your Darlings as beat poet Alan Ginsberg and in Horns, a film about a young man w ho aw akens to find strange horns sprouting from his tem ples. Daniel has w orked w ith charities fo r a long time. He sup p o rts Demelza House C hildren’s H ospice, a charity caring fo r term inally ill children in Britain. In sub-Saharan Africa 358 million people are without reliabie access to drinking water, since contam inated water sites cannot provide fresh and clean water. Now a way has been found to elim inate the problem: a book with pages that can be torn out to filte r drinking water effectively.

Pour \ dirty water through filter

Silver ions — positively-charged particles — interfere with bacterium’s metabolism, producing extremely toxic substances called reactive oxygen

The book was created by Dr Theresa Dankovich, a postdoctoral researcher at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. She developed and tested the technology for the book over several years, working at McGill University in Canada and then at the University of Virginia. “It’s directed towards communities in developing countries,” D r Dankovich said, “A ll you need to do is tear out a paper, p u t it in a simple filter holder and p our water into it from rivers, streams, wells and out comes clean water - and dead bacteria as well. ” Each page is implanted with silver or copper nanoparticles that kill bacteria when water passes through them, i The bugs absorb silver or copper ions - depending on the nanoparticles used - as they percolate through the page. And each page is printed with a message in the local language: “The water in your village may contain deadly diseases. But each page o f this book is a paper water filter that will make it safe to drink. ” According to her tests, one page can clean up to 100 litres of water. A book could filter one person’s water supply for four years. Dr Dankovich had already tested the paper in the lab using artificially contaminated filthy reliable access contaminated to provide to eliminate to tear, tore, torn out to filter effectively researcher to develop to direct towards developing country to pour

The $129 stick transforms almost any HDMI-compatible TV or monitor into a functioning Windows-based PC. Just attach a 2.4GHz wireless keyboard and mouse, and you’ll be ready to create documents, surf the Web, and update social media. “Imagine transforming the traditional TV in a vacation rental into a small multi-media hub, capable of streaming a movie, video chatting with relatives or editing a work document on the fly, ” Lenovo suggested in a news release. “Convert the dusty monitor lurking in a spare bedroom into a Webenabled homework station, or transform a coveted man-cave into a home cinema. ” The tech giant, however, isn’t the first on the scene: Intel in January introduced its own PC on a stick, the Intel Compute Stick. For $150, you’ll get the same Intel Atom processor, 2GB of memory, and 32GB eMMC Flash Storage. In an Interview with Collider, Radcliffe joked that “if you like the book, y o u ’ll hate the movie. ” The reason for this is that Frankenstein’s monster will not be created until near the very end of the film. “One o f the biggest differences between us and other Frankensteins will be that, generally speaking, the main relationship is between Frankenstein and the m onster and the monster is created in the middle o f the movie, and in our version it ’s created right at the end and the journey up to that is really about how we come to that eventual idea. They are near to becoming fugitives as they complete their goals to use science to create life - and Victor’s ultimate endgame of creating a man. Igor is the eyewitness to Frankenstein becoming the man who created the legendary Monster. As Victor’s experiments go too far and his obsession has horrifying consequences, only Igor can bring his friend back from the brink of madness and save him from his monstrous creation.

The movie is not the scary and frightening horror film usually associated with the name Frankenstein, as it focuses mainly on the relationship between Igor and Victor. We can also expect to get to know more about Igor’s love life, since he meets Lorelai (Jessica Brown Findlay’s character), a beautiful circus performer, who gets close to the brooding assistant. This uniquely new and different perspective is especially interesting, as the actors playing Victor and Igor - James MacAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe - are tw o of the bests of their generation. MacAvoy has prominent stage roles and a series of dramas under his belt (Atonem ent, Becoming Jane, Trance, Filth) and he is also widely popular as Charles Xavier in the X-Men movies. Daniel Radcliffe has gained w orldwide recognition as a child actor in the Harry P otter films, but he is determined to leave the wizard boy behind him you can read his profile on pages 42-43 Their co-stars in the film are Jessica Brown Findlay, Andrew Scott, Mark Gatiss and Freddie Fox. “ We shall create life out o f death, ” says Victor Frankenstein in the trailer. If you are interested in the scientific enterprise that was supposed to change the world, check out the movie for a nice winter thrill!

Alíce In Wonderland/ A practical English Level 2. Book+mp3 audio G ram mar Ennek a furcsa ötletektől hem zsegő, kalandos, vidám mesekönyv nek a szerzője, Lewis Carroll a múlt században élt, matematikaprofeszszorként dolgozott az oxfordi egyete men. Világhírűvé vált könyve első ízben 1865-ben jelent meg. Azóta - Immár a világ gyermekirodalmának klasszikusaként - szinte valamennyi nemzet nyelvén napvi lágot látott. Az angolszász humor e sajátos alkotása Alice oldalán elvezeti az olvasót Csodaországba - amely valójában álomvilág, a Viktória királynő korabeli Anglia torzképe. Aki ismeri az angol történelmet, az a Szív Királynőben könnyen felismerheti a hirtelen haragú Viktóriát, s férjében, a pipogya Szív Királyban a jelentéktelen Albert herceget. PASSIVE VOICE

SZENVEDŐ SZERKEZET

2. Akkor is passzív szerkezetet kell használ ni, ha egyértelmű a cselekvést végző szemé lye, tehát felesleges beletenni. Cars are repaired in this garage. - Az autókat ebben a műhelyben javítják. Teljesen egyértelmű, hogy a cselekvést végzők az autó szerelők (mechanlcs), tehát fölösleges ezt külön megem-

PASSIVE VOICE Nagyon sokan bonyolultnak gondolják a szenvedő szerkezetet (angolul Passive Voice), és talán pontosan emiatt gyakrabban hibáznak a passzív használatakor. A lényeg az, hogy ne félj tőle, mert sokkal nehezebbnek tűnik, mint amilyen is valójában. Vágjunk is bele! Mikor használjuk a passzívot, azaz a szenvedő szerke zetet?

1. Ha nem tudjuk, hogy ki végzi a cselekvést, vagy ha a cselekvést és nem a cselekvőt akarjuk kihangsúlyozni. Hundreds of cars are stolen every year in our district. - Évente több száz autót lopnak el a kerületünkben. U gyanez cselekvő szerkezetben így szólna: S om ebody stole my cár yesterday. vagy They stole my cár yesterday.

The cár is being repaired by my father.

5 2

KÖZÉPFOK (B2) hanganyag szövege How to find the work you love Recent research statistics when it comes to employees and their jobs are a little unnerving - around 80% say we’re unhappy, don’t feel engaged, and just don’t really care for our jobs. If this speaks to you, you’re in good company. But how do you break out of the underemployed, unhappily employed cycle? If you know what you can’t live without, set your mind to starting a passion project, and pour yourself into your work, soon the work you’ll be doing will be the work you love doing. Ask yourself some very basic questions. In order to get on the right track for a fruitful career, you’ve got to know yourself at your core. Sit down with no distractions and devote a few hours (or days) in truly nailing down about what your passion is. Ask yourself what your passion is and what you do best and what you envy in other people’s careers. Define “success.” For some people, success means a big paycheck. For others, it means a family. For others still, it means peace of mind. What’s your definition of success? What would you need to do career-wise to feel successful? Whatever your definition is, make sure your definition of suc cess and the work you’re considering line up.

The German car giant has admitted cheating emissions tests in the US. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, some cars being sold in America had devices in diesel engines that could detect when they were being tested, changing the performance accordingly to improve results. Revelations that the company cheated federal emissions standards on half a million cars in the US alone have done serious damage to the company’s finances and reputation. Olaf Lies, a VW board member and Lower Saxony's economy minister, says those who allowed scandal to happen should take personal responsibility. The state of Lower Saxony has a controlling stake in the carmaker. Lies has said some staff acted criminally in cheating emissions tests and they need to be prosecuted. Olaf Lies also said the board only found out about the scandal just before it was announced, even though it was known about in the US for more than a year. “Those people who allowed this to happen, or who made the decision to install this software, they acted criminally. They must take personal responsibility,” Lies told BBC’s Newsnight programme. “It’s about finding out who was responsible, who knew about It and when they found out.

Determine your unique strengths. First find out what you are good at, and also what you do best! If you dream of being a cat groomer but you’re terribly, terribly allergic to cats, you may have to kiss your cat grooming dreams goodbye. Sometimes, things just aren’t meant to be. It’s not only about what you want to do, but it’s also about what you’re good at. What’s more, It’s about what you’re uniquely good at. What combination of talents do you have that you don’t see in other people? Check the path of your passion. Once you have an idea of what you would love to do, it’s best to check your target, because sometimes It’s hard to see the forest through the trees. Maybe you think you want to be a great marathon runner, but it’s not because you love running - it’s because you love studying how the human body moves and you’d be better off as a coach or a researcher. Maybe you think you want to be the world’s best baker, but what you really love is feeding people - and you should actually open a cafe. Check that your passion is right on target before you assume anything. If you have no idea what your passion truly is, start by just trying everything. When something interests you and your gut tells you to pursue It, do so. You could find skills or interests you didn’t even know you had, completely changing your course. source: WikiHow

“We only found out about the problems In the last board meeting, shortly before the media did. I want to be quite open. So we need to find out why the board wasn’t informed earlier about the problems when they were known about over a year ago in the United States.” Lower Saxony owns 20% of Volkswagen, allowing the state to exert influence over the company and to block actions it opposes. Lies and Stephan Weil, Lower Saxony’s prime minister, sit on the company’s 20-strong supervisory board, which monitors and appoints top executives. The US Environmental Protection Agency revealed on 18 September that Volkswagen had fitted diesel cars with software that cheated emissions tests. The company’s chief executive, Martin Winterkorn, resigned last week over the scandal. German prosecutors have said Winterkorn, who has denied responsibility for the scandal, was under investigation. Lies said the board had no idea what the total cost of the scandal would be. Fines In the US alone could be about £12bn and law firms are lining up to bring civil cases against the company. “Huge damage has been done because millions of people have lost their faith in VW,” said Lies. “We are surely going to have a lot of people suing for damages. We have to recall lots of cars and it has to happen really fast.” source: The Guardiar

Music as Medicine The idea that music has healing powers occurs in almost every culture and goes back to ancient times. Apollo was the god of both music and healing. Hippocrates is said to have played music to help treat his patients. In the Old Testament, King Saul’s fits of depression were alleviated by the music of young David. Much research has con firmed that music has psychological and physiological effects. While scientists can now see via medical imaging some of the changes in the brains of people listening to Beethoven or Elvis, music is a very complex stimulus, and the ways it works on us remain largely elusive. Music therapy - the use of music to address physical, psychologi cal, cognitive and/or social problems - now plays an accepted role in modern medicine, for children as well as adults.

be just noise to another. Some research suggests that classical music is best for stress reduction, heart rate and blood pressure, though this may, in part, relate to the age and tastes of the researchers who did the studies. If you don’t like Bach or Mozart, it won’t help you much as you go into the operating room. So one prerequisite, of course, is to have people choose music they like. Some individuals don’t care for any music, and for them silence may be the best treatment. source: Berkeley Wellness

Music therapy has been used as an adjunct treatment for everything from strokes and various types of chronic pain to dementia and other neurological disorders. Some of the best evidence concerns the use of calming music for anxiety disorders and depression, as was dis cussed in a 2011 review paper In the Harvard Review of Psychiatry. Two years earlier, a Cochrane analysis of 23 clinical trials concluded that music can have a beneficial effect on blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, anxiety, and pain in people with heart disease. Music is also sometimes used for short-term goals in patients before and after surgery, as well as to help them feel less nervous when undergoing procedures. In part, music may simply distract people from their pain and other symptoms. Up-tempo music can be used to motivate and energize people during physical or occupational therapy - or just during a conventional exercise program. Of course, taste in music varies, and what enthralls one person may

Edward Snowden may soon have more space to write: Twitter is considering allowing its posts to stretch beyond 140 characters, according to a report citing unnamed sources on tech news website Re/code. Twitter has struggled with flattening growth and is still in the midst of a search for a new CEO, with co-founder Jack Dorsey running the company in the interim. Dorsey has been voluble about his perception of a need for change at Twitter and on the company’s most recent earnings call was frank about his disappointment with the status quo. Other reports have speculated that Twitter will allow features making it easier to “tweetstorm,” or send multiple numbered tweets as a timeline-filling mini-essay in the manner of popular Twitter users like tech entrepreneur Marc Andreessen and New Republic editor Jeet Heer. Heer said on Twitter that he didn’t like the idea of longer tweets. “ Product initiatives we’ve mentioned in previous earnings calls, like instant timelines and logged-out experiences, have not yet had meaningful impact on growing our audience or participation,” Dorsey told investors on the company’s most recent earnings call. “This is unacceptable and we’re not happy about it.” Twitter most recently reported having 316m monthly active users about one-fifth of Facebook’s user count - and it is looking for ways to increase that number, though it has had a great deal of success with advertising and monetization of Its existing user base. Brian Wieser of Pivotal Research said the company was overperforming by any reasonable metric except its own. The company’s stock has rocked back and forth over the last year, largely due to fluctuating guidance from Twitter’s own executives. But it would be wrong to paint Twitter as the only social media company planning major changes to its user experience: Facebook is rumoured to be trying out a “dislike” button (actually, the safest locution for it is probably “buttons other than ‘like’,” given that Mark Zuckerberg

Twitter may be considering its posts being stretched beyond 140 characters. The company has shown remarkable growth in 2015, even according to its own metric. Co-founder Jack Dorsey is leading the company for the time being. Many users have already gone around the character limit by sending multiple tweets in a row. Re/code editor Jeet Heer was not enthusiastic about the possible change. Twitter users are five times more active than Facebook users. Twitter is looking to increase its user base to the highest possible number. The existing user base has not responded well to advertising. Twitter’s stock has gone back and forth over the last year due to fluctuating guidance from its own executives. Co-founder Jack Dorsey may not have a word in this issue.

SZÓBELI VIZSGÁK This month we have prepared four useful dialogues about how people celebrate specialoccasions. The first one is about a family reunion when a big family gathers together to meetsom ebody they rarely meet.

FAMILY REUNION - CSALÁDI ÖSSZEJÖVETEL Wife:

Dad has just told me that uncle Tom is coming home for two weeks in November. I don’t think you’ve ever met him. He couldn’t make it when we had our wedding.

Husband:

is he the one who lives in Switzerland?

Wife;

Yes, exactly. They moved there 30 years ago. He rarely comes home and it’s always a big event when he finally does. He would like to see the whole family in a big reunion. The whole family? That won’t be easy. How many people are we talking about? Well, let me see. Dad and Mum, my two brothers and sister-in-laws, Uncle Tom’s sister and her family, all the cousins, nieces and nephews. I don’t know. About 70-80 people if my calculations are correct. Who is going to organise the party?

it seems that I am the lucky one. But I don’t really know where to start. Can you help? We should find a place first that is big enough for so many people. That’s step number one. Then we should contact the people and set a date that suits everyone. Do you know all the family members Uncle Tom wants to invite? I don’t think so. Some of them are on Facebook, but not many. I know some addresses and phone numbers, but I’ll have to consult Mum. She’s always been the source of information in the family. Anyway, I think it will be fun to meet the whole family. It’s an absolutely special and rare occasion. Sure. Especially for the kids. I don’t think they know many of your relatives. And they will definitely be happy to play with their cousins. It’s high time they met the elderly relatives as well. They love the stories their grandpa and grandma tell them about the good old times, now they’ll have the chance to meet the people in person. I can’t wait to see their reactions.

Come on, Mum. McDonald’s is old hat. And it’s only for small kids. It’s sooo boring. My classmates would just laugh at me if I invited them to a party there. Where then? I remember last time you went to a birthday party it was in a bowling alley. It was fun, wasn’t it?

Well, those are pretty expensive places. I don’t think we can afford to go there this year. Maybe next year we will put aside some money for that. But you know what? Let’s throw a garden party at home, for a change. That could be fun. We could play games with the water hose and the slide. Your daddy is so good at inventing games. OK, thanks, Mum. How many kids can I invite? The garden is big enough. Ten or twelve maybe? Can it be eighteen? There are eighteen boys in my class and I would like to invite all of them. ENGLISH AT W ORK

The word ‘money’ comes from the Latin word moneta, which means m in t’ - a place where money is coined - or ‘money’ Money has an absolutely central role in our lives. Although there is a saying that ‘Money can’t buy happiness, we also know from the famous song in the musical ‘Cabaret’ that “money makes the world go round” Without money, it is just impossible to live in the modern world If you are penniless you can do hardly anything and you are in great trouble: you can’t buy things or services. And many people dream of becoming millionaires and billionaires so that they can afford to buy anything they want. Money either takes the form of printed pieces of paper, banknotes or metal coins. Banknotes are used for higher values and coins for lower values. Banknotes com e in the form of different denominations and they are also called bills in America. Coins are of different sizes and shapes. Banknotes and coins are called cash. Nowadays, however

74

we use cash less often and pay with debit and credit cards more and more often. Today, money is often not something you can hold but it consists of numbers in bank accounts, saved in com puter memories. That makes things easier as you don’t have to carry cash around in your wallet or pocket. Many people find using ‘virtual’ money strange and they still feel more comfortable using coins and paper money, and do not really trust using electronic money on a com puter memory. In ancient times, people did not buy or sell with money Instead, they used bartering and traded one thing for another to get what they wanted or needed. Later they started to trade with items like jew ellery or spices and different things were used as money, like shells or blocks of salt. In 7 BC the first coins appeared in Lydia, in the western part of what is now Turkey. These coins were made of a weighed am ount of precious metal and were stamped with a picture of a lion. This idea soon spread to Greece, the rest of the Mediterranean, and the rest of the world. Coins were all made to the same size and shape. Coins were easier to carry than goods, and they had other advantages, as well. For instance, money was easier to divide than goods. Originally, the value of money was determined by the value of the material the money was made of, such as silver or gold. Coins, however, had disadvantages as well: carrying around a lot of precious metal was cum bersome and often dangerous and this would result in the appearance of banknotes. The

first of these were used in China in the 10th century AD. In Europe the first paper money consisted of paper ‘coins’ issued in Leyden in the Netherlands during, the Spanish siege of 1574. There was shortage of nearly everything in the city, so to create money, the residents took covers and paper from hymnbooks and letters and created paper discs, using the same instruments that were previously used to mint coins.

money exchanges and sometimes the rates they apply may vary. You can keep your money in bank accounts, bonds, shares, securities or other forms of investments. Shares are bought and sold at the stock exchange.

Proper banknotes were first printed in Sweden between 1660 and 1664. However, it did not work well, and had to be stopped because the banks kept running out of coins to pay on the banknotes.

The word ‘change’ is used for the money that you get back when you pay for something with more money than it costs. You can say: “Sorry, this is the wrong change” if the amount is less - or more - than it should be. ‘Change’ or ‘small change’ is used for money in the form of coins that is of small value. Children often get pocket money from their parents.

Now each country has its own currency: Britain has pounds and pennies, the EU has euros and eurocents and dollars are used in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and several other countries. You can exchange money in banks, and at

In informal English ‘quid’ is a pound and ‘buck’ is a dollar and ‘dosh’ or ‘dough’ is just money. American banknotes are nicknamed ‘greenbacks’. A ‘grand’ means one thousand so 20 grand is £20,000 or $ 20,000.

You should support something financially to prove that you don’t just talk about why it is good or important. You should not worry about where money comes from. This saying is from the Bible, where it actually says “The love o f money is the root o f all evil. ” If you have money you can earn more money with it. You don’t spend much time shopping if you don’t have money.

Time and time again Salánki Á gnes és Dezsényi István

Rövidítve: Jan, Feb, Mar Apr, Aug, Sépt, Oct, Nov, Dec (nincs rövidítésük: May, June, July) Leírhatjuk a dátum ot sorszámnévvel is (mintha magyarul azt írnánk, 25-e): 25th November 2015. A sorszámnevek képzése: a szám + ’th ’ kivéve: 1st = első, 2nd = második, 3rd = harmadik, 21 st, 22nd, 23rd, 31 st

- Shakespeare

N ézzük m eg először is, hogyan írhatjuk le a d átu m o t a brit angolban: A legelterjedtebb változat ez: 25 November, 2015. Az angol hónapok nevei: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, O ctober November

76

Például így: 25 November 2015 = ’November the twenty-fifth, twenty-fifteen’ vagy ’the twenty-fifth of November two thousand and fifteen’ Amerikai angolban kiolvashatjuk a ’the’ nélkül is, így: ’Novem

ber twenty-fifth, twenty-fifteen’

USEFUL INFORMATION

HASZNOS INFORMÁCIÓ

Néhány évszám gyakorlásul:

mennyi hiányzik még a következő órához. így:

1200 - twelve hundred 1406 - fourteen hundred and six or ’fourteen O six - az ’O’ itt a nullát jelöli 1516 - fifteen sixteen 2000 - two thousand 2005 - two thousand and five or twenty O five

It’s quarter to six. - Háromnegyed 6. (Negyedóra híján/múlva 6 óra.)

így kérdezzünk rá a dátumra: ’What’s the date?' vagy ’What date is it?’ vagy ’What day is it today?’

Ugyanez igaz a percekre is.

31-59 percig a 'fo ’-t használjuk, és megmondjuk, hogy meny nyi idő hiányzik még a következő óráig. It’s 23 to 6. - 23 perc múlva 6 óra. It’s 5 to 6.

BC = Before Christ = Krisztus előtt AD = Anno Domini = Krisztus után

It’s six-twenty. - 6 óra 20 van. It’s six-thirty-six. - 6 óra 36 van.

..

és így válaszoljunk a kérdésre: It’s November the 25th.

A ’BC’ az évszám után áll:

így kérdezzük meg, hogy hány óra van:

Emperor Augustus was born in 63 BC. - Augustus császár Krisztus előtt 63-ban született. Az ’A D ’ az évszám előtt és után is állhat.

What’s the time?/ What time is it? - Hány óra van?

Jesus Christ was crucified in 33 AD/AD 33. It’s 6 o’clock. - 6 óra van. It’s 3 o’clock. - 3 óra van. It’s noon/midday. - Dél van. It’s midnight.

... és így válaszolunk: It’s....(six o’clock, quarter to ten, half past seven stb.) Nézzük meg a prepozíciók leggyakoribb használatát az idő kifejezésére: at six o’clock. - 6 órakor in three hours - 3 óra múlva by 9 o’clock - 9 órára for two minutes - két percig, két perce since 5.30 - 5.30 óta

... és ahogy azt m ár az angolban megszokhattuk, a napszak esetében sem minden egyforma és logikus: in the morning - reggel, délelőtt at noon - délben in the afternoon - délután in the evening - este at night - éjszaka

Az előbbi példáknál maradva:

Vannak hosszabb időszakok is, például:

It’s 6 o’clock a.m ./ It’s 6 a.m. - Reggel 6óra van. It’s 6 o’clock p.m./ It’s 6 p.m. - Este6 óra van.

decade - évtized century - évszázad millennium - évezred

A fél (half )és a negyed (quarter) sem nehéz:

A század- és ezredfordulót pedig így mondjuk: the turn of the century/millennium.

It’s half past two. - Fél 3 van. (Két óra múlt félórával.) It’s quarter past two.

It’s 10 past 6. - 10 perccel múlt 6 óra. It’s twenty past three.

Végül néhány az idővel kapcsolatos hasznos kifejezés: in time - időben (valamivel a kellő idő előtt) on time - időben (pontosan akkor, amikor kell) exactly - pontosan around/ about - körülbelül within - belül Wait a second. - Várj egy pillanatot. I’ll be a minute. - Egy perc múlva itt vagyok. in a fortnight - két hét múlva
