Feel like you are missing out already with no Big Day Out in New Zealand this year? Fear not! Kiwi promoters have cherry-picked the bill and are bringing five acts across the ditch to our shores in 2013. Crystal Castles, Band of Horse, Pretty Lights and Alabama Shakes have just been announced alongside the already confirmed shows of Animal Collective and the Red Hot Chili Peppers in confirming they will be including a New Zealand stopover on their BDO trip down under in January. Crystal Castles are undoubtedly a highlight of this announcement for those who love the feel of the moshpit. The Toronto duo only just made it here for the 2011 Big Day Out but Alice Glass’ broken foot severely curtailed the antics of a band with a reputation for a ferocious live show. Band of Horses – who are currently streaming their fourth album Mirage Rock on their official website after its official release last week – are another act with a reputation here. Their beautifully bruised take on classic American rock, characterized on two previous visits by incredible musicianship and Ben Bridwell’s keening, Neil Young-like vocals, has earned Band of Horses a legion of loyal NZ fans. Alabama Shakes, a band that has kicked soul music back into the future with an electrifying live reputation, have been called the next big thing and are heading our way. Their debut album Boys & Girls has been called one of the albums of 2012 by critics everywhere. Pretty Lights bring the dance floor direct from the Big Day Out’s Boiler Room, stopping off on the way out of Aussie for shows and Animal Collective return to New Zealand for the first time in three years. But seriously, it’s a celebration of spring (it’s spring?) featuring 1995, Suren Unka, Heart Attack Alley and more. It’ll make your ears go snap, crackle, pop and potentially bang as well.

Direct from Austria, Mnozil Brass blows audiences away with its unique blend of musical ability, theatrics and originality. Formed 20 years ago in Josef Mnozil’s small tavern in Vienna, Austria, this ensemble of seven weird and whacky brass players has been wowing audiences around the world with the sheer variety and diversity of its performances.

I remember when I first heard Swan’s achingly slow, tortured album Skin. It was a work that slowly stripped you down to the bones of raw emotion and fettered your soul like a pastry brush. Songs were achingly slow and suspended like tortured souls in some medieval dungeon. The reinvention of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ held you up against the wall and teasingly ran the blade menacingly down your thigh. It was dangerous stuff back then and still has the cruellest love songs I’ve ever heard – until now. Like Trent Reznor compositions played at the slowest setting Claire Duncan’s music is ethereal, distant and mechanically cold, with the creeping distance of some deranged artistic spectre. Her music prowls like Jack the Ripper, ready to unleash malice on some unsuspecting victim. But unlike the gothic novels of the Victorian age Some Kind of Eden gives no time for melancholy. It doesn’t concern itself with the questions of why or where a relationship has disintegrated or fragmented. Only that it has. These are cold facts served, chilled, barely shaken, never stirred. ‘Six Feet Down’ in particular feels like all the angels have been slow burned in a smouldering furnace of early The Cure and Kraftwerk. And never turning to the betrayal of the upbeat, Duncan chooses to haunt the subconscious like Nosferatu’s monster with the most evident ‘Head to Toe’, which borrows both attitude and cleverness of St Vincent, but never slides into simple melody pop.

Clearly evident throughout is the isolation Duncan chose to surround herself in during the recording process in her expansive vacant studio space – a mile away from the cramped little Eden Terrace flat where she made most of 2010’s Spells. From time to time there are vocal nods to Bjork, especially on ‘The Drought’, which bounces off the cool, shiny concrete walls and floor with stringent, monotonous drones of electronic. Pulsating textures compliment Duncan’s slightly innocent, malleable vocals. Her concluding paean, ‘Body Black’ is the most inspirational effort. It’s almost like the lifting of a veil of some self-imposed depression and revealing that the perceived gloom was really just a low foggy haze. Whilst I wouldn’t recommend flying in this kind of weather, the underpinning drama and sense of menace on this album is still deliciously unsettling. If your cerebellum is looking to be challenged, assaulted and soothed simultaneously, then I’d recommend Eden. Find a nice quiet place, lie down and take in at least two songs. It’s the moment you have all been waiting for – whether it is because you hate the show or because you are dying to know who takes out the top prize, the season finale of Australian MasterChef is on. The first challenge sees the final three serve more than 100 fans of the show entrees.

As strong an argument as one could imagine for the “mumblecore” film movement spearheaded by this film’s director (Lynn Shelton) and star/producer (Mark Duplass), Your Sister’s Sister is one of the most purely pleasurable “grown-up” films I’ve seen this year. Working off a structured outline with no dialogue, the three lead actors here create an incredibly vivid dynamic, filled with the unmistakable rhythms of real life. But the film is so consistently funny and affecting, you’d never guess the dialogue was entirely improvised. With this and the upcoming Safety Not Guaranteed, Duplass is having something of a moment and he’s fantastic here. He starts the film as a bit of a sad sack, but as his character is drawn out by his pulchritudinous co-stars, he invites ample amounts of empathy.

Most films strive for authenticity, but this film is simply dripping with it. I can’t remember the last time fictional characters seemed so real to me. All this plus the most awesomely awkward sex scene ever committed to film makes Your Sister’s Sister an absolute must-see. Do yourself a favour and check it out. Gritty, unrelenting and totally addictive. The Wire debuts its new season with a powerful punch that will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside that it ever went away. The bodies are being piled up in Baltimore as the drug war is far from over. As with previous seasons, the story is from both the point of view of the drug dealers and the cops.

For stars of the small screen, it might as well be the Oscars. Hosted by SNL legend Jimmy Kimmel. With hot rating shows Mad Men, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and Girls to name a few up for gongs, it’s sure to be a nail-biting ride for TV fans.

Emily Blunt seems like she’s in every second movie these days, but none have exploited her earthy charms better than this film. And I can say without hesitation that I fell deeply and genuinely in love with Rosemarie DeWitt while watching Your Sister’s Sister. The actress (who took over from Rachel Weisz at the last minute) projects unmitigated star quality here, and deserves A-list status based on this performance alone.

THE , MAN S NO MULLET COOL-HEADED, DOWN-TO-EARTH AND FASCINATED BY MULLETS, BRET MCKENZIE TALKS TWO LITTLE BOYS. For the last month or so, Bret McKenzie has been a man on a mission. Bustling from interview to interview, the multi-talented performer has been talking and thinking about almost nothing but Two Little Boys – his new movie and first starring role – in the lead up to the film’s opening this Thursday.

It’s fair to say the film’s content is not something you’d hear about in a Flight of the Conchords song and it gave Bret a chance to flex his “serious” acting muscles. While he felt like “it was jumping into the deep end”, it was his close partnership with Hamish that made things easier – for both of them.

As one of many interviewers, I was hoping my questions wouldn’t be met with clichéd answers, a sense of boredom at the same questions being asked for the umpteenth time, and even a sigh when I ask him, “Where do you keep your Oscar?” (I totally asked and for the record, he still keeps it on his piano).

“It was fun to work with another comedian,” says Bret. “He comes from a duo as well so we were used to bouncing off other people. It made it easy for us because we were both slightly out of our depth. It was a more dramatic role than I had ever done and it was also my first a feature film. A much bigger part than my elf role [referring to his bit part in Lord of the Rings].”

But not at all. In fact, he has a charm, an easy-going nature, and seemed to be totally at ease when talking about anything but the semantics of the film. And so it happened that we spent far too much time discussing mullets, cheese rolls and sea animals. Two Little Boys – directed by Robert Sarkies of Scarfies fame – is the story of best friends Nige (McKenzie) and Deano (Australian comedian Hamish Blake from the well-known duo Hamish and Andy). After Nige gets wrapped up in an unfortunate accident, their friendship is tested as Deano will go to any lengths to keep his best friend with him – even if that means dispatching anyone who gets in his way. “Nige is incredibly beaten up,” Bret says when asked what he thinks of his character. “The film’s about him breaking free from this oppressive relationship.” “What’d I think? I wouldn’t wanna be Nige,” he adds with a laugh. “I don’t think anyone would. His best mate is a complete psychopath. It’s a bit unfortunate that when they met as children he didn’t know this.” Uncharted territory for the typically light-hearted comedian, but it was this quirky, yet disturbing theme that attracted Bret to the script. “I loved the script because of that darkness,” he explains. “It’s a really interesting balance between drama and comedy. The story is very dark. Getting rid of a dead body and a destructive relationship – it’s a very unusual mix.” That’s right folks, a dead body. A Norwegian backpacker (played by Swedish actor Filip Berg) to be precise. But despite playing dead for the majority of the two month shoot, Bret says Filip was incredibly funny behind the scenes. “Most of the film he’s a dead body and he was really good about it. He had to lie on the ground, get thrown around, into a roadworks hole, and play dead in the cold Invercargill nights, but he was great. “One of my favourite quotes from him was on set one day. He said, ‘In Sweden, we have sex every day’, and then he followed that up with, ‘It’s something I love to do so much, it’s amazing I’m so bad at it.’ That’s the kind of stuff he would say when you were just standing around.”

“It definitely felt like new territory for me, especially since I’m often in things I have devised, so it was hard to be an actor working for someone else.” Working closely with Hamish also meant a bit of friendly competition when it came to the infamous mullet – something the boys took great pride in. “We were quite competitive about how magnificent our mullets were,” Bret laughs “and we spent a lot of time preening. I was surprised at how easy it was to get a mullet out of my hair though. It really was just a trim on the sides and then not much else to do.” And what did they do with their gorgeous locks? “We had to cut it off because we did a flashback which was set in premullet times. Hamish cut his off in one piece and turned it into a mullet wig that he rented out for charity,” says Bret, laughing. “People could rent it for parties. I don’t know how long it lasted.” “I don’t know what I should have done with mine. I feel like it might be a good thing to have in the garage or maybe even use it in a garden sculpture? We should have given Rob a couple of garden gnomes with bogan mullets as a premiere gift.” Mullet mayhem aside, it wasn’t just Hamish that Bret had to work with in close contact – there was also the natural sea life of the Catlins. The scripted scenes relied on a lot of cameo appearances from the “locals” – everything from dolphins to sea lions. Good thing then that some showed up. “The Catlins has all this amazing wildlife, so a scene would call for a sea lion and there would be a sea lion,” says Bret. “It’s crazy. Duncan [Sarkies] and Rob had it in the script relying on all these animals and they came through! There’s no, like, movie sea lion wranglers in the Catlins. They didn’t bring that in on a truck. And I think it’s one of the best scenes in the film.”

RUNNING IN CIRCLES POST-ROCK BAND RUSSIAN CIRCLES BREAK THE CYCLE WITH THEIR LATEST ALBUM.

“The music allows us to be different people. [It gives us the] freedom to do whatever we want” says Chicago-based Russian Circles on how their elaborate and unflinching style of instrumental post-rock allows them to express themselves.

set list. Number six on the record, ‘Praise Be Man’, has been left out of the live sets. The band says, “There is a lot happening in that song that wouldn’t translate into a live setting. We’ve butchered some of our songs in the past and we’ll leave that song as it was recorded.”

Their latest album, Empros, is “darker and rawer”, having been stripped back to be more conducive to the live show while the band become more comfortable playing as a three piece. The album has still earned them the title of “masters of the chameleon rift”, with a sound that is more refined than their last album Geneva, but just as, if not more, overtly aggressive. Empros is a clear departure from Geneva, on which the band incorporated the strings arrangements that became too difficult to play live.

Influenced by no particular external force or musicians, their iPods are “full of all kinds of genres.” And the band say that they, “love heavy music as much as other genres”, which provides them with a slight reprieve from their own genre. “If we only listened to post-rock, we’d slowly become narcoleptic.”

However, Russian Circles aren’t letting the technicality of some of their recorded material hold them back from an explosive live show. In the face of an increasing amount of rising post-rock acts, “we try to avoid the safe and predictable pitfalls of the genre. We’re pretty hard on ourselves when working on new material but the effort is usually worth it.” Being hard on themselves when writing keeps Russian Circles away from the pack. With songs on Empros that shift from achingly beautiful to physically punishing in a matter of seconds, the emotional connection between the trio –given that they don’t tend to discuss the influences behind the music with each other – make them a hard act to surpass, “[although] there’s some emotional content going through our filters. The vibe of each song is mutually understood as soon as the foundation for [that] song is in place.” Empros was a conscious sonic step back for the band. Compared to Geneva, they focused this album on their ability to play it live. Dropping the string arrangements, Empros brings five possible songs to the band’s

While their sound has been referred to as a cross between Pink Floyd and Metallica, they say that while Empros fits into the “ground level reference” the reference is “more of a reply to a perfect stranger who notices we’re in a band and asks what we sound like.” Currently on tour en route to our shores, Russian Circles entertain themselves while on the road with coffee and alcohol. Codemasters do a mean game of Formula 1. They always have. This time around, however, it’s not true to life simulation, but crazy high-octane arcade action racing. Welcome to the brand new F1 Race Stars! It’s a shift away from niche titles which appeal primarily to the hardcore and a giant leap into the hands of young and old. Just about everyone can find something to love about Mario Kart, and it’s clear that Codemasters hope to bring exactly that type of approachability to the sport of F1. After a few laps, it’s evident that this is, however, no Mario Kart. Yes, it’s a karting title, and yes, it includes power-ups, weapons, and crazy tracks. But with the merge of reality and fantasy, with tracks that are recognisable in many ways, but then an enormous exaggeration on the other hand, F1 Race Stars looks to be so much more – and it definitely gets the blood pumping. Immediately noticeable are the incredibly animated and caricatured drivers – recognisable versions of their real-life counterparts thanks primarily to their exaggerated features and bobblehead-like proportions. Fernando Alonso’s smooth hair, Michael Schumacher’s chin; it’s all here and it’s hilarious. There are a few noteworthy elements which are really set to push F1 Race Stars into a league of its own. First, your cars take damage, meaning that if you want to take advantage of the KERS zones (KERS is a type of speed boost that exists in real life Formula 1) you will need to pit to repair – a really nice addition that adds an element of strategy. Another interesting inclusion is that weather is a factor. You’ll need to think about it lest your kart goes flying all over the track. There are also some truly F1-focused special abilities (such as the Safety Car which brings the whole pack back together and more or less restarts the race – a great way to equalise the field), while realworld tactics like slipstreaming will give you an advantage here. It looks as though F1 Race Stars is differentiating itself from other karting titles in all the right ways and has the potential to revolutionise F1 as a family affair. What’s the ethos of your store/clothing line? Gus is a collaborative effort. We basically just try to achieve highly aesthetic design and branding that we want to wear and are proud to sell. It’s not about trends or money for us – it’s about satisfaction, design and enjoyment (though hopefully we do make money one day). Which historical figure had some wicked style? Jack Kerouac and his beatnik crew had some good style, though I’m unsure of whether or not my enjoyment of their work inflates my style perception of them. Lennon had some style too, though again, I’m unsure if that’s an objective evaluation of their actual style or if my admiration of these characters means they get style by default. Style – it’s a hard one to pin down. What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? Well, I already mentioned Lennon, can I use him again? Society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? Fashion is such a subjective concept and I don’t really feel qualified to criticise being merely a wide-eyed participant. Having said that, I am not amused in the slightest by those giant soled shoes, whatever they’re called, creepers is it? Yeah that’s them, I just Googled it. What’s the must-have look this spring? We are all about our bowties at the moment so…. bowties, definitely bowties. Colours/patterns big this season? Personally, no, and Gus hasn’t really incorporated much of that carry-on this season, however other reputable sources may point to yes. At the moment, we’re more interested in textures and layers rather than patterns and colours, though maybe we just haven’t found the right materials just yet. We don’t like to rule things out, that’s for sure. What are the essentials for a man’s wardrobe? A couple of pairs of good jeans, an abundance of plain T-shirts, a nice shirt or two (bowtie optional), and something warm for when it gets cold.

Bill Bailey’s an unusual fellow­– and it’s not just because of his mullet hairstyle (nonexistent on the top, Rapunzel-like long at the back). No, it’s in the way he can’t be pigeon holed. Is he a comedian? Is he an actor? A musician? An explorer? Well, turns out he’s all of them. The 48-year-old British performer’s shows – which routinely sell out in Australia and New Zealand – can feature anything from standup comedy, monologue and short films, to tales of the road, surreal experiences and everything in between. And then there is the music. No, don’t jump to compare him to Flight of the Conchords. With Bill, ‘music’ can range from a Hindi version of Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ to his musical talents on a six-necked guitar. So what’s in store with his new show Qualmpeddler? “I’m delighted I’ll be finally doing something I always wanted to do which is a Jamaican reggae version of Downton Abbey,” he explains. “Also, in this show, I talk about the Church of England needing an update through the medium of dubstep.” Music, as any Bill Bailey fan will know, is an integral part of his comedy. It is also where his roots in comedy began. At 15, he realised the thrill of performance as a member of a school band called Behind Closed Doors. He was the only pupil at his school to study A-level music and passed with an A grade. He attributes his ability of perfect pitch (where he can listen to any sound and recreate that note without an external source) to leading him down this path.

As life would have it, music once again become a central part of Bill’s life and his career when he was asked to perform at Sonisphere festival, the world’s largest touring rock festival, on the show’s England leg. “That was an extraordinary experience,” he recalls. “It’s the largest crowd by a mile that I’ve ever performed to – 65,000 fans in a field and in the pouring rain. We performed metal versions of a lot of my songs, which is actually great fun. “I found it very productive getting together with a bunch of musicians. In a few days, we had written a version of ‘Scarborough Fair’ in the style of Rammstein.” The experience was “a great time I look on fondly” and he marked the occasion by recording his first album, In Metal. “Because of contractual obligations, I wasn’t able to put that footage of the concert anywhere. I wanted to capture the sense of [the festival] by going into the studio very quickly. We went in and recorded them live in the studio, so pretty much as we did on the night. It was a distillation of what Sonisphere was about.”

“I remember from a very early age I was able to pick out the tones of domestic appliances,” he says, matter-of-factly. “Vacuum cleaners, washing machines, all have a hum at a certain pitch and it seemed very obvious to me.

As the undefinable performer continues his journey, fusing comedy and music together in a way unique to his personality, it is only fitting that his unique work would attract the more quirky kind of fans – whether they want an autograph or a lock of his famous hair.

“I would say, ‘Oh the vacuum cleaner’s in B flat and then go to the piano and play it. My mother would go, ‘Blimey I guess it is.’ I realised there was a musicality about everything and I suppose that’s what lead me naturally over to study music.”

“It’s quite flattering really, that someone wants a token of my body,” he laughs, “I have to be quite sparing with locks of hair these days, but most people just want a signature and that’s fine too.”

The gifted musician’s list of musical honours reach far and wide within music circles. He is classically trained, has received an Associateship Diploma from the prestigious London College of Music, as well as being made an honorary member of the Society of Crematorium Organists. However, Bill admits he always had the temptation to be silly with music, a trait that influences his stand-up shows and led him into comedy.

Bill began his stand-up in 1984, forming in a double act called the Rubber Bishops. But he quickly began to develop his own style – the music side of his life creeping into his work in the form of musical parodies. In 1995, his first solo stand-up show, Cosmic Jam, was incredibly well-received and the nine shows since have always incorporated music in some way.
