INTRODUCTION TO UMTS INTRODUCTION UMTS(3G) is a WCDMA based technology, as against the GSM(2G)/GPRS(2.5G) TDMA technology. It was formulated by European standard organization 3GPP, it is widely supported by global standard organization. The core network evolves on the basis of and can thus be compatible to the existing GSM/GPRS networks. It can be based on ATM, TDM, and IP technologies to evolve towards all IP network architecture. The Core network comprises the Circuit Domain (Circuit Services) and packet domain (Packet services). Based on ATM technology, the UTRAN uniformly process voice and packet services and evolves towards the IP network Architecture. WCDMA RAN (UTRAN) – UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network Node B Handles the Radio Frequency (RF) in the cells in the WCDMA radio access network  It mains function include spreading and de-spreading, modulation/de-modulation, channel coding/decoding and conversion between base-band and RF signals RNC (Radio Network Controller) Provides the system information broadcast and system access control function. Provides radio resource management and control functions such macro diversity combination, power control and radio bearer allocation Provides such mobility functions as handover and RNC Transition Presentation Confidential between MTN and audience
