Application of Vaasthu : Buildings
Roads
Rooms
Cosmic Representation
Location
Gate
Buildings 1. U Shaped Buildings
2. I Shaped Buildings The open areas should be in the northern side and the eastern side of the plots only. If the construction is in the north and the eastern areas brings sorrow and ill health only it is better to avoid such type of constructions.
Roads Perpendicular Roads :
Rooms
•
North of North east perpendicular road ensures over all prosperity.
• •
East of Northeast ensures over all prosperity.
•
South of south east is good for business success and also for women.
•
South of south west this is not desirable and brings only labor troubles, financial crunch etc and it should be avoided.
•
West of south west it affects the promoter in terms of finance, litigation and labor trouble etc. it should be avoided.
•
West of north west it gives reputation knowledge leader ship, over all control and prosperity.
•
North of n.w if the level of the road is on the lesser side then the results can be positive but generally the results are fluctuating by nature and problems can be anticipated from the regulatory bodies. It also attracts illegal activities.
South of south east indicative of financial constrains, and should be guarded against fire accidents.
Position of the Room on a south facing plots : 1 - this area can be used as kitchen, drawing room etc. 2 - this area can be used as dining room 3 - this Pooja room, washing area etc. 4th and 5th part calculated after dividing 9 equal parts from south east to north west and taking 4th and 5th part for fixing the entrance. This place can also be used as the drawing room. 5 - this area can be used as living room toilet area etc. 6 - this area can also be used as living room toilet etc. 7 - This area can be used as a master bed room 8 &9 - these areas can be used as additional bed room, toilet and balcony area
Cosmic Representation 1. VAYU-WIND 2. KUBERA-WEALTH 3. ISANA GOD 4. SUN SOURCE OF ENERGY 5. AGNI FIRE 6. YAMA ANCESTORS PLACE 7. PITRU 8. RAIN & THUNDER SHOWERS 9. BRAHMA THE CREATOR The area represented by 9 is called bhrmasthan this area should be kept open to air in large size building. In the case of flats also it is ideal to keep this area open to sky. But nowadays this area is covered with acrylic sheet to allow the sun rays to enter in side the complex this stategy is also permissable according to vaasthu principles.
Location Location Influence
•
North east should be sloping and ideal to have the water bourn areas like lakes, river, ponds etc.
• •
East should be sloping, plains and greenery is preferred.
•
South should be raised and elevated surface, dumping yard, heavy and larger trees, hills etc.
•
South west this area also should have elevation also ideal for constructing quarters for officers and top level executives.
•
West this area should be elevated and ideal to have the town ship, raised meadows etc. This area is ideal to have the heavier trees and greenery.
•
North this area can have the parks and the play grounds. Schools and also the community hall can be constructed here.
•
Sea or the river running in the north/east/north east is good for prosperity.
•
The drainage water stagnation in the east / northeast / north will be harmful.
•
The presence of the water bourn areas in the south or western side may prove financial losses.
South east it is better to have the upward gradients, meadows and ideal for union building, restaurants, canteen etc.
Gate 1. Main Gate The main gate and the main entrance to the building can be in line with each other. The right side entry to the building is good. Back side entry should be avoided. Left side entrance also considered to be bad. 2. Entrance point on four sides The pattern of the ruling of the planet is mentioned above. The areas ruled by venus, jupiter, mars can always be considered as auspicious the areas ruled by the moon is also favorable, so these parts of the building can be chosen to keep the entrances.
The Earth spins around on its North-South axis and is tilted from the axis towards the North by about 23 ½° at the meridian. With the Sun rising in the East - it makes the North-East very important. Cosmic energy is received from this direction in abundance (Vitamin D too) and it is in its purest form. This energy flows out in the opposite direction - the South-West. The Sun moves on the Northern portion of the Earth for six months (Dec 21st to Jun 20th or Jan 14th to Jul 15th according to the Vedic calendar) and in the Southern portion for the next six months (Jun 21st to December 20th or Jul 16th to Jan 14th according to the Vedic calendar). The daylight time will be more when the Sun is in the Northern portion and the night time is less. It is the contrary when in the Southern portion. Thus there is more light in the North than in the South. Due to these reasons more windows, door and balconies are prescribed on the Northern and Eastern side. The ground level should be lower here and obstacles must be removed so that the rays of the morning sun could enter the structure. The morning rays emit less heat and more light (ultra-violet). Water source/storage is ideally located towards North and East for the Sun to cleanse the water. Trees or foliage as a screen on the Western and Southern sides are recommended - for protection from the afternoon sun (infra-red). It also helps in regulating the supply of oxygen. Summer winds (usually from the South and West) collect moisture - from the trees before entering the house making it more tolerable. The energy while going from the North-East to the South-West does not flow in a straight line. It divides itself in the middle with one half flowing to the South-East and the other half to the NorthWest. The energy is 'warmer' on the South-East side as it flows. If the Thermal Concept is applied, it appears that water raises in temperature when it passes from North-East to the East and 'boils' when it reaches the South-East. Contrary to it, water remains virtually the same temperature when it passes the from the North-East to the North-West. Similarly, humidity also increases from North-East to South-East and decreases towards NorthWest and South-West. An ideal method to block this cosmic energy and absorb it as bio-energy would be to block the South-West or raise the level of ground. I assume the kitchen is recommended in the South-East for its thermal properties and the bedroom in the South-West to facilitate absorption of these energies. To facilitate even flow of energies, a square plot would be ideal. The pyramid whose base is a square is believed to have the best geometry to tap and transmit cosmic energy. Rectangular plots would stretch energy lines. The direction to which the plot faces is not important - though sometimes North and East are considered auspicious. But the levels of ground in each of the directions within the plot are important. Ideally the East should be lower than the West and the North should be lower than the South. (You must have reasoned out the logic of this by now) Correction of the levels is required before any construction. Correction is also required if the plot is not a perfect square or a rectangle. Such plots cause energies to flow unevenly. It can be corrected by sacrificing the extra area and by redrawing your boundaries. It would be easier this way than encountering problems later - even at the cost of
expensive real estate. However, a projection to the North-East is acceptable. If any natural source of water is present in the plot, it must be in the North-East. It might have to be closed otherwise. In a larger perspective you will notice that prosperous locations such as Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and New York all have natural sources of air and water to the North-East. Study the chart below - before we go any further -
North West
North
North East
Source of change in Source of health, Source of course of business, wealth and Wealth friendship and enmity prosperity
East
West
Source of knowledge, prosperity
Source of name, fame and prosperity
South West
South
Source of Character, Source of behaviour, cause of Death longevity
South East
Source of Fire (health, cooking and food)
Air in the North-East and Fire in the South-East maintain the flow of energy. The North needs to be kept open as a source of wealth and the East opens out for wisdom to enter. It would be best to keep the South closed to keep happiness from flowing out. Similarly the West needs to be covered. The magnetic fields of the planet also have a significant effect on us. The human body is considered to have an inherent polarity with the head acting as the North Pole. Thus if while sleeping, your head is directed towards the north, it will repel the field of the earth's pole. It is recommended to sleep with the head to the South
VAASTHU TIPS 1. Plots and buildings must be aligned to the directions. 2. The plot should be square or rectangular in shape. The ratio of length to width should be less than 2. 3. More open space in the North or East will provide greater shaded area than to the South or West. Big trees are recommended in the South and West and small plants and lawns on the North and East. The number of trees should be even. 4. The main entrance is preferred in the North or East. The wall in the North Eastern side should not be too high. Keep the Southern side tall and heavy. 5. The roof should slope towards East, North or North-East. 6. Columns in a building should be even in number. 7. Allow daylight to enter through doors and windows on the Northern and Eastern side. Keep the West and South shut when not in use. 8. Keep the central area open and not enclosed in any room. If it is roof is kept open, it reduces the number of openings to the outside and less dust enters the structure. It also allows the elements to freely enter the structure and balance the equilibrium. 9. Staircases should be on the South or South-West. They should climb from East to West or from North to South. They should wind up in a clockwise direction. The number of steps should be an odd number (thus when you start climbing with the right foot, you alight with the same foot) 10. The Master bedroom is prescribed on the South-West. 11. Sleep with your head towards South or East - the North is prohibited. 12. Keep the elements in circulation within the house by installing plants, fountains, aquariums, statues, hi-fi, chimes, bamboo flutes, mirrors and crystal balls within the structure. 13. Avoid heavy/dark colours in the Bedroom. Cupboards must have their backs facing the South. 14. The study is recommended at the West and should face the east while studying. 15. The seating arrangement in the Drawing Room must face North or East. The backs of sofas or chairs must not face the entrance directly. Keep South and West for your hi-fi, TV, etc. 16. The Kitchen should be in the South-East (or North-West) and while cooking you must face East or North. Drinking water to be stored in the North-East. Appliances to be on the South or West. Keep the North-East clean always. 17. Face the East or North while sitting on the dining table. 18. In the office - the chief should occupy the chamber in the South-West corner and should face North. The table should be at the South-West of the room and the door should be in the North-East. 19. His deputy must occupy the chamber in the South or West and face North or East. Other staff members should face East. 20. In a shop - the door must ideally be on the North-East portion. The show racks must be against the West or Southern walls. Personnel must face East or North and Customers should face West or South. Appliances should be on the West or South. The cashier should face North or East. 21. Broken mirrors, bottles and appliances that dont work should be removed from the house.
Feng Shui as a mystical combination of philosophical, religious, astrological, cosmological, mathematical and geographical concepts, recognises geomagnetic energy or QI as unstable and ever changeing while the forces as Yang or male (positive) and Yin or female (negative) - a balance of both makes available cosmic energy. Tips 1. Don't have your back to the door or have a mirror placed so that you can see behind you. Wrong placement can be rectified using mirrors. Mirrors must be kept clean always. 2. No clutter on your desk and below your bed. 3. Widen your front path. 4. Make the environment more comfortable - away from drafts, harsh lights. 5. Soothing landscape pictures must be hung indoors (avoid gaudy ones). 6. Crystal balls help energy to move in your space. 7. Chimes regulate energy. 8. Colour and art bring in energy. 9. Upward pointing lighting raise energy. 10. No broken equipments, utensils or mirrors to be used. 11. The foot-side of the bed should never be towards the door. Sleep with your head towards south. 12. The front door should be welcoming. There should not be an obstruction to the main door and should be one out of the rear door. The main door must not be directly opposite the main door of another house. 13. Drinking water should not be placed near the fireplace. 14. Avoid growing cactus at home. 15. Avoid applicances with harsh noises. Door and windows must not make noise while opening and closing. 16. The kitchen must be well lit. Keep the stove clean and use all the burners regularly. 17. Keep your bathroom door closed.
Four factors are taken into consideration in this science of geomancy 1. Chi or 'the breathe of life' - the omnipresent consciousness 2. The direction 3. The five elements - fire, water, wood, metal & earth 4. The power of water in relation to the property

Dr. N .V. Arunachalam, who has done a lot of research on Vaasthu and written four books on the subject, says that Vaasthu evolved as a science, but has been misused by quacks. Also, with recent developments in science, some of the observations of Vaasthu are not very relevant now. According to Vaasthu, if we dig a hole in a plot and then refill it, if there is excess of earth then it is considered good, if it is sufficient it is 'OK', but if it is found deficient it is considered bad. In the olden times before the advent of pillar construction, it is true that if the volume of the soil is more, it means the earth is tightly packed and hence will have a strong foundation. Similarly, if the volume is less, the owner may have to purchase mud to fill the gap, involving extra cost. Also there is every chance that the building will sink over a period of time. But since today most constructions are pillar types or concrete pile foundations, it is difficult to see how this principle still holds good. Taking one more example, according to Vaasthu, the height of a house should not exceed the height of the temple in the neighbourhood. This was based on the principle that temples used to have a flag post made of metal and they acted as lightning arresters. If the houses were taller they would become prone to lightning strikes. But nowadays with proper earthing and erection of lightning arresters on high-rise buildings this has lost significance. Vaasthu experts also say that the bedroom in a house is best situated in the Southwest. Possibly this is because this part of a residence may get good breeze. But not only does this become irrelevant with fans and air conditioners, there have also been changes in wind patterns and other factors since these ancient principles were laid down. Vaasthu advocates certain specifications for room size. For example it considers a room length of 6 feet as good while 7 feet is considered bad. There is no known scientific explanation for this. Similarly there is no scientific basis for the advice that wells should be dug on the northeast corner of the plot and cupboards carrying cash should be placed in the northeast corner of a room. At best, speculation can arrive at an argument that since there is also a belief that the head should not be placed on the North while sleeping, putting the cupboard in the north east corner will ensure that it is visible even while lying down! All these leave us with the conclusion that scientific studies have to be undertaken to prove the conclusions of vaasthu shastra are valid.
Why One Should Follow Vastu? Vaastu considered the interplay of various forces of nature involving the five elements of earth, water, wind, fire and ether and strives to maintain equilibrium as these elements influence, guide and change the living styles of not only human beings but every living being on earth. Thus they influence our deeds, luck, behavior and other basics of life.
Vastu Shastra is the sublime elucidation of your surrounding and their influence on your life. Vastu literally means " house" or Dwelling Place and its principles establish to create a harmony between the fine elements viz. Earth, Sky, Fire, Water and Air in the environment.
Vastu Shastra unifies the science, art, astronomy and astrology, it can also be said as an ancient mystic science for designing and building. Vastu Shastra helps us to make our lives better and will secure from things going wrong.
Vastushastra is an ancient building science which covers the philosophy and theory of Architectural works to construct any building and as well as living style of people. Vastushastra is based on various natural energies, which are available free cost in atmosphere like:
• • • • • • • •
Solar Energy from Sun. Lunar Energy from Moon Earth Energy Sky Energy Electric Energy Magnetic Energy Thermal Energy Wind Energy Light Energy
• Cosmic Energy Utilization of such energies gives us pleasure peace, prosperity and money etc in our life. Now a days we are having National Building code, which gives us certain regulations to construct building, whereas in past our ancestors were having Vastu Shastra as a religious & rigourics code. As per shastra Vastu Purush is god of building science, hence let us pray. Thus Vastu is rational, as it is scientific, it is permanent as it is based on directions and directions are unchangeable. It is beneficial as it is a bridge between man, material and nature and above all it is practical, as it is very simple to follow. Build your house according to the guidelines provided by vaastu and lead a healthy and happy life.
Vastu can be used for every room, every house, every temple, every shop industry, town planning, tour, cities and even for earth. Vastu can be used for micro as well as for macro level. Every creature on earth starts its life with sunrise as it performs day & night. Hence there is much importance of sun in every one life. It gives ultra violet rays in morning and infra red rays in evening which one basic need to reduce / generate bio-chemical germs, N2/ Oxygen / CO2 on earth. Sun indicates light (illumination) will power, generosity, solar system, luck or fate, mobility and in body. It rules over bone, eye, heart, spinalcord, blood circulation and soul etc. Hence east direction is auspicious; it belongs to lord Indra. North is considered auspicious since magnetic lines of forced moves from North to South, thus origin of all the life.
There are three forces in action to create harmony. Wind, water and fire or, vaayu, jal and Agni. If these forces are kept in their appropriate places, then there will be no disturbance. But if water is put in place of fire and wind in place of water or in any other combination, the forces will start acting accordingly and create disharmony and unpeacefulness.
Authenticity Of Vastu The biggest Proof of vaastushastra can be found during the time of Ramayan and Mahabharat. Even in the cities of Mohanjodaro and Harappa the application of vaastushastra can be seen. Since the science goes far back to the times of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna there are many interesting mythological stories concerning the origin of Vaastupurush (the deity).
If you consider it a mythological fact then here are the most unbelievable examples that Vastu is a science and one must follow it wholeheartedly.
Geographical situation of an area affects the nature thus the vastu for every place changes. We see that some countries are much advanced, developed and prosperous while others are much backward. For e.g.
•
•
Japan, existence of deep water in North and the East is considered most auspicious according to vastu shastra. The eastern side of Japan is widely spread and open. Thus Japan gets full benefit of the rays of the sun. This is why Japan is rich and prosperous. There is sea in Southeast and south of Japan, which is a place for Fire, this is why it suffered the attack of atom bombs explosion and earthquake. If we take Africa as a continent, we all know the northeastern corner of this continent is interjected. Northwest portion is projected, southeast and south have unlimited water, these all conditions are inauspicious according to vastu, that's why African countries are backward, uneducated, poor. But on the contrary, in the north of this continent, there exists Mediterranean Sea, which is favorable according to vastu. In the eastern part, river Nile flows and that's why civilization developed in Egypt and now Egypt got name and honour for
its world famous pyramids.
•
Why to go far, lets discuss our own INDIA, we know we have the Himalayas in the North and Northeast side of our country which is against vastu, thus there is lot of poverty in our country. There is water in Southwest and southeast side of our nation, thus we have to face the attacks of foreign empires. One thing that makes India famous is that we have our slope towards east, which is a very favourable and auspicious sign. Apart from the geographical conditions and different nations, if we take examples within our country, you will be surprised to see. Have you ever thought that why tajmahal is so famous that it has become the 7th wonder of the earth and why exactly similar structure called"chandbibi ka makbara" situated in Aurangabad is not yet known to the people. Why is so that the Tirupati balaji is world famous and other temples situated in the same regions are still waiting for the pilgrims to come…. This is all vastu , they are famous because they are made according to vastu. Thus to achieve the happiness, peace and prosperity, one must follow the principles of vastu. Vaastu is an empirical science. Over the years, based on the knowledge in the Vedas, repeated studies on a number of buildings, offices, temples, houses, apartments have shown a positive correlation between the application of Vaastu principles and success. It can be extensively applied to various edifices natural and man made land masses, temples, factories, homes, office buildings and corporate headquarters.
Water in the Northeast is considered most auspicious and Japan has the largest water body in this direction, a reason for its being one of the most prosperous countries in the world. Mumbai again has water in the North East and the Atomic Power Plant (Agni) in the South East thus according to Vaasthu principles and the most powerful, prosperous place in India.
The location and construction of the famous Balaji Temple, the most prosperous in India, are all according to Vaastu: Water tank in the Northeast, Kitchen in Southeast, and the Lord in Southwest facing East and so on. Studies conducted on cities like New York, London, Singapore, Hong Kong etc have shown they are according Vaastu principles.
The most famous prosperous industrial houses have also been studied; The Tata head quarters in Mumbai, Akbarallys the most successful retail store in India, factories of FACOR a highly successful industry in A.P. and many others have been found to be according to Vaastu.
1. Place Selection It should not be a place where someone has lived previously and has been ruined. Land belonging to Temples, Trusts, Patients, Mentally retarded persons and Charity land should not be bought, In addition to this, land belonging to Black magicians, Destroyed house, Place where cactus grows, termites reside should not be brought. There should not be any Dustbin or Sewage opposite to the house. As it would bring in Bad air. There should also be no Plateau in front of the house. If there are such things opposite to the house then the rays will be harmful to the house and also it will lead to infighting in the house.
The house can be in a place where there are clay and pebbles. If the soil is of Golden color then it is a good place. The ground should be in a higher place, should be even. If the ground is raised towards the West Side, it is considered to be good. If the East- west side is broader than the other sides, it is considered to be good. Land Purchase
The land should not be bought from several forbidden categories of people and from elders or temples .The acquisition of land in the northeast is recommended. Sale of land in the north or east is bad. The new house after construction should be occupied within a time gap of three months. If it is required to build two houses in the same plot without a compound wall or legal partition before, the house in the south or west should be built first. If a single plot is to be partitioned between two brothers, the elder should take the west or south portion and the younger brother should take the north or east portion. The houses of two brothers should not be exactly opposite each other. Expansion of the existing house should be in all four directions. While cleaning never sweep the house from the door towards the interior. The sweeping motion should be towards the exit. The cleaning motion should not be towards the northeast. There should be no tying of cloth drying lines between the main house and any compound wall on permanent basis. Vaastu purusha should be prayed to on three occasions namely at the starting of the construction, at the fixing of the door, and at the end of construction. Monday- shukla paksha, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are considered auspicious for commencement of work.
Lands not suitable for living Which have by nature trees that yield milky sap on cutting On which shadows of temple fall Near bridges, moats and with large holes in nearby plots On the border of the town or center of the village Which is always wet With a pond on the corner and with stagnation of waste water With pebbles, termite hills, big rocks and boulders Physical Features
They are very powerful than man made changes. Hills in the south, southwestern and western sides of the plot are ideal. The raised space in the east, northeast, north of the plot is bad and those in south, southwest and west are good. Trees directly opposite to the main door are bad, but are beneficial in the west, south -west, and south. Avenue trees will pose problems for north and east facing plots. The basics of Vaasthu Shastra insist on the need for leaving the east open so that light falls freely from the rising sun. The house that remains in constant shade invites diseases for the inhabitants .It is not recommended to have a permanent residence with a view to a large water body. Water bodies are beneficial
in the north, northeast and the east of the plot. The rivers flowing in the northern side of the plot is inauspicious and if it is from west to east, or from south to east it brings abundant wealth to the residents. The Vaasthu components bestowed by nature are more powerful than man made changes. Large open spaces in the northern and eastern sides of the plot are beneficial The effluents of the neighbors should not flow into the plot. If the wall built by the neighbor in the east or north is very high then the opposite walls should be higher. The north east of the building should be extended beyond the neighbor’s buildings in north and east. Top
2. Plot Properties The north and east facing plots are ideal. The south and west facing plots are second. Shape of the plot
According to the tradition of Vaasthu odd shaped plots are considered inauspicious for building. This does not mean that one says ‘no’ to any plot that is neither rectangular nor square. It to be defined by using a fence, a wall or pillars demarcating the boundary. The plot meant for construction should be a geometric form while the remaining area of the site can be used as a garden or playground. Composition of earth: The characteristics and composition of soil are very important for two reasons. One is the load-bearing capacity of the soil which determines the type of foundation to be laid, the other is the ability of the land to sustain vegetation. Any soil that is incapable of regeneration world be considered as bad for human habitation. Natural gradation
All sites have some gradation already existing in the land. The designer has to take this into consideration and build as sensitively as possible using the natural gradation to advantage. Water points, staircases, sewage disposal should take into account this gradation of land in the design. Slopes considered auspicious are SW to NE, N to S or W to E. This does not mean that other slopes are wrong. Whatever the directions of the slope, it must be used effectively. Water source
The location of water in a site is one of the important aspects of design. Water sources can be tapped in different ways. Water on the north or east is beneficial, but when it is not
available in these two sides, any suitable location can be accepted. The location of good water in the proposed site is a cause for great jubilation as water is divined through different methods. Shape of the building
Northeast in East direction of the building can be projected. Southeast in East direction of the building should not be increased. Southeast in South direction of the building can be projected. Southwest in South direction of the building should not be increased. Southwest in West direction of the building should not be increased. Northwest in West direction of the building cab be projected. Northwest in North direction of the building should not be increased. Northeast in North direction of the building can be projected. Southeast direction of the building should not be increased. Southwest direction of the building should not be increased. Northwest direction of the building should not be increased. Northeast direction of the building can be projected. East in Southeast direction of the building should not be increased. South in Southeast direction of the building can be projected. South in Southwest direction of the building should not be increased. West in Southwest direction of the building should not be increased. West in Northwest direction of the building can be projected. North in Northwest direction of the building should not be increased. North in Northeast direction of the building should not be increased. East in Northeast direction of the building should not be projected. “L” Shape building should not be constructed. In the same plot, one building is in the South direction and another in West direction, can be constructed.

3. Soil Properties Living soil-trees and plants flourish and the plot from a distance looks green and has sufficient water. White colored soil-for those in knowledge, education and learning Red- for those in power and in government service Yellow-for those in business Black-for those doing physical work Soil Testing
A square pit of 1 and 1/2 feet should be dug in the North East corner. After the pit has
been dug, the pit should again be filled with the same mud. If even after filling the pit, some mud remains ,then it is considered to be a good land. On the other hand If some more mud is required to fill the pit then the land is not good to build a house. Building a house on this land will lead to Bankruptcy. The second method is to test the land is to pour water into the pit and watch for how much time the water stays. Water should be poured into the pit in the evening and if in the morning the pit is full to its quarter, it is considered to be a good land. If the water is fully drained then it is a moderate land. If cracks are seen after the water is drained then it is not a good land. Flower Testing
The third method is to ask three married woman to pour water into the pit at the same time . A flower is then dropped into the water. Based on the direction, in which the flower rotates, the judgment can be made. If the flower rotates in clockwise direction, it is considered to be a good land. If it rotates in the anti-clock wise direction then it is not good. Even based on the direction in which the flower settles down after rotating, the land can be judged. If the flower stops in the East after rotating , it is considered to be a very good land. If the Flower stops in the West, South ,North and Northeast, it is also considered a good land. However if the Flower stops in Northwest, South East and Southwest, it is not a good location for constructing a house.

4. Establishing Cardinal Directions Cardinal directions have a deep significance to the life of human beings on earth. Facing each of the directions for a particular kind of activity has been given mystic meanings in each society. The procedure by which the plot or Vaasthu is set out into modules is known as pada vinyaasa. Brahmasthana
It is the center of the plot. In the plan it is necessary to create a center for the building, which grows into the total form. Brahma Pada or Veethi
It is the central position of the total form, which includes the central point. The brahma pada is considered to have very high concentration of energy (of the total form). Hence, traditionally it was either opened out as the courtyard or made into a central hall for collective gathering. DeivikaPadam or Veethi
It is the first concentric space around the Brahma pada. In this space the energies are considered to be high and so the allocation of passages and rooms for collective rather than individual use are recommended here. Manusha Padam or Veethi
The second concentric space it is considered to contain energy which is comfortable for human activity and hence, all activity rooms such as kitchen, bedrooms, study areas, puja and rooms for individual use are placed in this part of the layout. Paisaacha Padam or Veethi
The final concentric space, which can contain the storage areas, outer verandah, external walls, outer walkways, bedrooms and work rooms. In general, manusha and paisaacha may be considered together for all special activity areas. In the final built form, the outer peripheral rooms would contain specialized activity such as sleeping; cooking, storing, bathing while the inner areas would be for relaxing and conversing. Top
5. Design Principles In the field of Vaasthu, three principles of design one paramount. They include:
a) Bhogadyam (suitable for the purpose) The designed products must be useful, lend itself to easy application. For example, a house must have ample space for storage of articles and facilities for cleaning.
b) Sukha Darsham (pleasing to the eye) The designed product must be aesthetically pleasing. The proportion of windows and doors, the size of rooms, the rhythm of projections and depressions play a critical role in the
aesthetics of form.
c) Ramya (should provide sense of well being) The designed products should evoke a feeling of well-being and contentment in its user. Picture of Jassim House, Mumbai, India e.g.: Traditional elements in a residence.
Form and center Within the suggested form many centers (foci) must be established in a space meant for many people. If the space has a specific activity, then gathering all energies in a single center proves to be very powerful. This is possible for a place of learning, worship, manufacture and research. But in a home, a hostel, or neighborhood, several centers or shifting centers is most inspiring and motivating. These centers can be open spaces, common gathering spaces filled with herbs, healing plants and sacred water, or a religious center. It is possible in the contemporary context to adapt this principle in ways suitable for present day life styles. · A square or circle for the cooking and eating zone. · A square or rectangle for the preparation and storage of food and clothes. · A square or rectangle for sleeping, washing, bathing and resting. · A square, rectangle or octagon for studying, In the shifting centers, the relationship of each to the main center (brahmasthana) should be constantly classified.
Natural Environment and symbols Some of the associations and connections between nature and concepts for building are: Lotus- water pond -environment. Bird- flight- skyline. Rock- earth- stillness. Trees, plants, waters, the earth, the sky, are there for us to connect with-older, wiser, more in touch with eternal ‘being’ The method of creating connections between the occupants of a built space and their heritage through symbolism and mythology is a very
significant part of the tradition.
Shapes and form of habitat in nature Any wisdom that comes down from the past should integrate the local needs and the constraints into its design solution to be effective or functional. The wood and clay tiles and steep slopes give Kerala architecture its uniqueness and make it climatically suited to the west east. The Sanchi Stupa, even after so many centuries, continues to attract the viewer with its perfection of proportion and simplicity of line.
Orientation The geographical directions have played a very significant part in the design of individual buildings and group housing in the tradition.
Cosmology Any given physical space can be perceived in its connection with primary energies. The cosmology of the space depends a great deal on the dominant view of the people.
a) Mandala or Mandalam It is a representation of the cosmos through geometric forms where by the living space is laid out in a variety of patterns.
b) Fixed locations The direction in which a building is facing, the configuration of movement and the location of facilities can create infinite patterns for people to inhabit.
Shapes and colour Next shapes experimented with are square, triangle, polygon, rectangle, circle, ellipse, oval, or free form. The choice of shape would affect the management style, lifestyle and activity patterns.
6. Effects Of Street Focus In Vaasthu In Vaasthu, any street focus on a plot actually disturbs the bio-electric magnetic field in and around the plot to a great extent, either by amplifying the imbalance in energy dynamics or by attenuating the positive energies. The street that runs and focuses on to any side of a plot is called a 'spearing street'. This is also referred to as 'therukuthu' in Southern states and 'veedhi shula' in the 'Northern states. People are generally scared of this particular phenomenon. The figure shown gives eight directions of street/road focuses on a plot. All the different types of street focus or 'spearing streets' do not necessarily render bad effects as generally believed. Out of 12 possible street focuses on a plot, four street focuses on the central portion of any side of a plot are neutral, four are harmful and four are good. The 'veedhi shula' or street focus, is perhaps, the most powerful of all Vaasthu parameters, especially in fortifying the good/bad powers of Vaasthu. Several case studies reveal that in both the good and bad 'veedhi shulas', the Vaasthu effects are excessively pronounced. Some of the Vaasthu properties of different street focuses are summarized in the following table:
This coloured background represents good effects.

In ' veethi shulas ' we have considered only single approach roads. But practically, we may have plots with streets or roads on two sides or all four sides. In Vaasthu, plots with adjacent roads in the North and West sides promote the owner's prosperity. A site with roads on three sides is preferred and has some unique advantages, while a plot with roads on all four sides is considered to be the most auspicious. The Vaasthu effects for various locations of roads in different directions adjacent to a plot are tabulated below :

7. Vaasthu and Astrology Vaasthu Purush
The God of Vaastu has no structure. He is of various forms in each month. He has his left hand on the ground and the right hand in the air when he sleeps. And during each month his direction of sleeping differs. But he sleeps in such a way that his foot is placed in the seventh raasi in line with the raasi in which the head is placed. During Chitirai, Vaigasi he sleeps facing North. During Aadi, Avani, he sleeps facing East. During Iypasi, Karthigai he sleeps facing South and during Thai, Maasi he sleeps facing West. It is auspicious to build a house only when the God of Vaasthu is awake. Month

From the above table it can be seen that the God of Vaastu is awake only for 1 and half hours. During this 1 and half times he does five types of jobs. For each he takes 18 minutes. First eighteen minutes- he bathes. If work is started during this time, Government benefit will come. Second eighteen minutes, he does Pooja. During this time if work is started then obstacles will come. For the third eighteen minutes, he eats. If work is started during this time, poverty will come. Fourth eighteen minutes, he eats beetle nuts, During this time if we start the work Child wealth will increase. Last eighteen minutes he rules. This is the most auspicious time. So during the time he eats beetle nuts and rules, it is the auspicious time to start building the house. Most suitable months for building house
Vaigasi, Aavani, Kaarthigai and Maasi are the most suitable months for building house. Vaigasi- will lead a happy and prosperous life Aavani-friends and relatives support will come. Karthigai- Wealth and Health will increase Maasi- Old Prestige will return and will be prosperous. Auspicious days
Moreover we should see in which days to start building the house. Sunday and Tuesdays are good days for laying Foundation. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays are not good days for laying foundations.
Auspicious Time
The house should be started after seeing the auspicious time in Panchang. Shubham, Pramaim, Mahendiram, Sathyam, Shilam, Shupiram, Ayushman, Sowbagyam, Thuruvam, Thiruthi, Shoban, Agarmam, Piruthi, Sitham are good times for starting the houses. Like this Palavam, Pavam, Kaulavam,, Nathvai, Karasai, Pathina, are very good time. In stars, Karthigai, Uthiram, Uthiradam, Miruga Siridam, Chitirai, Avithajm, Punarpusam, Vishagam, Purathdi are not auspicious time for building houses. The following stars Prathanam, Tudidiyai, Tiruthiyai, Chaturthi, Panchami are auspicious for starting the house. Thithi
Thithi should also be seen. The days and the corresponding thithis on the day which are not auspicious is given below. Sunday - Chaturthi Thithi Monday - Shasthi Tuesday - Sapthami Wednesday - Thuthiyai Thursday - Ashthami Friday- Navami are not auspicious. Yogam
Similarly Yogam should also be seen. There are four types of Yogams. AMRITHA YOGAM SIDDA YOGAM MARANA YOGAM PRABALARISHTA YOGAM. AMRITHA YOGAM is considered to be auspicious. SIDDA YOGAM has a Moderate effect. The other two are not auspicious. LAGNA PAVAM should also be considered.
STIRRA LAGNAM is considered to be very auspicious. Stirra lagnam
There are twelve raasis and Lagnam is the place where the sun is at the time of birth. Of these twelve raasi's Mesham, Kadagam, Thulam and Makaram are SARA LAGNAM. Rishabam, Simham, Viruchigam and Kumbham are STIRRA LAGNAM. Mithunam, Kanni, Dhanus, Meenam are UBHAYA LAGNAMS. The STIRRA LAGNAS are auspicious for House Warming as mentioned above. There are 27 STARS. Of these some are without leg, without Body, without head Stars. There are three stars in each Raasi. These stars are not auspicious for House Warming. Bharani, Chitirai, Ahilyam, Maham, Puram, Visagam, Meenam, Puradam, Purrathadi are the nine stars not auspicious for House Warming. Chandrashthami days are considered to be not auspicious . Hence it is advisable not to have house warming ceremony in these days. Abhisithana kalam , kari days are not auspicious for house warming ceremonies. Avoiding the above mentioned days are good. Chitirai, Vaigasi, Karthigai and Thai are auspicious months for conducting House warming ceremony . But if the house owner is born in these months then the house Warming ceremony should not be held in these months. House Warming should not be held for incomplete houses. Ayadi Poruttam
Ayadi literally means ‘income and others’. Income, here, stands for all energy inputs whether in terms of money, health, children, happiness, friendship or spiritual strength. In order to bring about prosperity in all walks of life the following calculations or ayadi poruttam are made: To begin with the module (padam), which is being adopted for the design, should be checked against the birth star (janma nakshatram) of the owners for it to act in a beneficial manner on them. The width or perimeter of the building may also be calculated for benefits. In houses, which may grow in parts over time, the perimeter may keep changing; hence either the module or width may be taken as the primary measure for subsequent beneficial calculation. The calculation should be aimed at the following: To create a sense of well being. To balance monetary income and expense so that there is no loss. To achieve work excellence. To effect an aura of contentment and spiritual satisfaction in the built space To enhance learning and curiosity
To allow for growth and prosperity. Click Here To Find Out The Muhurtham Of Your Building
8. Rituals In Vaasthu The Vaasthu Shastra is full of ritualistic data that pertain to the relationship of a person to the earth (bhoomi) or with the energies (Vaasthu devta) or to the trees (Vana mahotsavam or Vana murhurtam). The rituals in Vaastu are:
1) Vaasthu Muhurtham After referring to the Panchangam or Indian calendar, the right time is chosen to inaugurate the site and to propitiate the energies. The time chosen is when the Vaasthu Purusha (energy grid) is awake and capable of participating in the ceremony in a powerful manner. Vaastu Purusha is awake during eight months- Mesha, Vrishabha, Kataka, Simha, Tula, Vrihchika, Makara, Kumbha) and asleep in the other four- Dhanur, Mina, Mithuna, Kanya)
2) Bhoomi Puja This pooja is carried out at the same time as Vaasthu muhurtham. A small 64-part diagram denoting the manduka padam and the Vaasthu Purusha within it is marked in the NE part of the property using different seeds and colouring substances. An effigy of the Vaasthu Purusha is made in straw and burnt to ward of evil spirits. This ritual is usually carried out in the morning.
3) Garbhanyasa A ritual to bring alive the building and its spaces. Carried out in the evening or night after the building has been completed and is ready for occupation. The ritual maybe carried out in the center or brahmasthana, or in the north, west, east, and south, on one side of the central axis.
4) Kumbhabhishekam Rituals carried out for temples. After the temple structure has been completed, and the image of the Divine one (God) placed in the Sanctum or garbagriha, the Kalasam or bronze urn is placed on the top of the outer structure. Within holy water the Kalasam is finally cleaned.
5) Griha Pravesam The final action of purifying and making ready the space for occupation in houses (residences) is called griha pravesam. With all these rituals, the tradition has helped people understand the intrinsic and extra ordinary relationship they share with their physical and spiritual environment

9. House Anatomy Malaiadi Shatram specifies where the various rooms of the house should be. Our Shastrams have divided the directions into eight and each direction has a Angel. East-Indran, WestVarnan, North ,Kuberan, South-Yaman, NE-Easanyam, SE- Agni Corner,NW-Vaayu, SWNiruthi. On this basis the house structure should be designed. For example, SE is known for Agni. So the kitchen should be in the SW. Indran is the God of Gods. So the Family Head's room should be in the East. SW corner can be used as a store room or as an office room. West room is Bedroom. The NW room should be used for Pooja room. North room can be used for Study room, Office, Store room. NE- Family head's bedroom. The amount of rooms in a house should be odd. The staircase should be facing East or North.

The rule states in such houses with twelve pillars the goddess of fortune will run away and the house will be taken possession of by the goddess of evil and other evil spirits. Those who live in houses, which have odd number of pillars or even number of doors, will suffer like a deer shot by an arrow and be subjected to unnecessary harassment and become vexed. The rule further states that having three pillars on the raised platform in the verandah will lead the resident to a confused state of mind; incur loss of property and there will be impediments in all matters. 12. Multi Main Door Way The main door way is an important aspect for a building. The Vaasthu Shastra gives much credence to the main doorway, which is the abode of the Goddess of fortune and possessing divine strength. The back door way is the place ruled over by the goddess of misfortune (Moodhevi) who patiently waits there. Having four main doorways in the four main directions of a building is known as "Viswatho" gateway. Having such an arrangement of four gateways ensures prosperity in the entire front. But such an arrangement of four gateways (main door ways) will be highly favourable only in the case of a temple or a workshop/factory. Erecting three main doorways in the three main directions excepting east, of a building, is known as "Viyakra Padam". Such a house will be subjected to the fear of thefts and loss of cattle heads. But, this kind of gateways are mostly suited to workshop/factories. The goddess of fortune will bless a building with plenty and prosperity, which has three main doorways in the three main directions except West. These kinds of gateways will bring good luck and fortune only in the case of workshop/factory building. Having three main doorways in the three main directions except North will bring ruin and misfortune to workshop/factories. Having two main doorways in the South and West will usher in all-round prosperity and comforts. Having two main doorways in the North and West will lead to frequent thefts and adversity. Having two main doorways in the North and East will bring in scores of diseases. Having buildings on all the four directions of a residence the center plot (Brahmasthanam) of which is open to the sky, is known as the Square Mansion (Chathura maligai) and will bring fame to its residents. Agnidevta finishes all other businesses. * The whole structure should not have a basement. If it has one, only the eastern and the northern part of it should be used. In the southern and the western parts immovable heavy goods can be kept. *
The basement should not have a height of less than nine feet.
* If there is water in a basement which is closed and not used for a long time, one should not enter the water. Infinite, invisible evil forces have entered this water and it may be dangerous.
* A basement in the east or the north side with cash counter on the ground floor can prove beneficial. Colour Of Basements * The basement should have white colour. Blue colour should not be used which symbolizes spiritualism. General Guidelines For Basements * In ancient times for Samadhi (Separating the spirit from the body) the western part of the basement was used. The face was kept towards the east. The whole basement is filled with the thoughts of the person taking Samadhi. One should not dare to enter such places of Samadhi. If at all, he has to go, he should do so only from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The basement should be kept open for at least 15 minutes before entry. First of all, the means to enter should be downed slowly. The depth of the basement should be ascertained. You should enter taking somebody to accompany you with two batteries. * Many ancient temples have basements. A basement exactly under the chief deity has a particular significance. An ordinary person should never enter it. Because of the prayers of infinite devotees and their religious faith, the basement is filled with magnetic waves. If a religious person enters, he should not stay there for more than three minutes.
31. Water Tank Direction Of Placement * The overhead water tank should be in the west or the southwest ground floor can prove beneficial. * The overhead water tank in the southwest direction should be at least two feet above the uppermost slab. It should not be touching the slab. The sun rays first fall on this tank and are absorbed in water. Due to water, this corner becomes heavy and it is advantageous. But under no condition the overhead tank in the southwest corner should leak. Dampness in the southwest corner is not good, therefore the tank is placed on a slab higher than the slab of the building. * The northeast corner belong to water element still a very big overhead tank is not proper in this direction because the northeast corner should not be heavy under any condition. * Leaving the southwest side, if the tank is built in the west side it is very beneficial. This is the direction of the Lord Varuna and he is in charge of the rains. This tank in the
west direction can be built over the slab itself. There is no necessity of leaving a gap of two feet. * Overhead tank should not be in the northwest direction as far as possible. If it is, it should be small in size, of less height, and situated at a distance of at least two feet from the northwest corner. The water in this tank is not used properly and gets finished before expected. * Overhead tank should not be in the middle (Bramhasthan). If there is a load on the Bramha, life becomes impossible to live. One does not feel like staying in the house. If the overhead tank at the Bramhasthan is removed, surprising advantages can be experienced within 21 days.
Colour Of Water Tank * The overhead water tank should not be plastic as for as possible. If it is a plastic tank it should be of blue or black colour. This leads to absorption of sun rays As far as possible, there should be different tanks for drinking and cooking and for toilets, bathrooms etc.
General Guidelines For Water Tank
* The toilet should be one or two feet higher than the ground level. The door of the toilet should be in the east or the north direction as far as possible. * The slope of the flooring of the toilet and the outlet should be in the east or the north. Marble tiles should not be used in the toilet. * The water storage of the taps of the toilet should be in the east, the north or the northeast corner. It should never be in the southeast or the southwest direction. * Overhead tank should not be located in the southeast corner. Loss of wealth and accidents possible. The effects of overhead tank in the south direction are of medium effect. Even this tank should be two feet above the slab of the roof and should not leak.
32. Open Space Direction Of Placement * More open space around the building in the east and the north direction than that in the west and the south directions is very beneficial.
* In the east or northeast corner, there should be a Tulsi Vrindavan (A structure in which the holy basil plant is planted). The height of this structure should not be more than the plinth level. * Swimming tank, wells, fountains, underground water storage tanks, borings, etc. should be in the east or the north. * Garden, decorative plants, lawns etc. should be in the east or the north. The decorative plants should not be taller than three feet. A small water fall of three to four feet should be constructed in the east or the north leaving the northeast or the northwest corner. * Swings should be in the east or the north and they should swing towards the east or the west. *
There is no harm if pet animals and birds nests are in the northwest corner.
* Benches in the open space in the east and the north direction should be in the west or the south direction and person should sit facing towards the east or the north.
33. Porch Direction Of Placement * Porch or portico should be in the east or the north direction. If it is in the west, the southwest corner should be vacant and if it is in the south direction it should be in the southeast corner. But this can be tolerable only. * The roof of the porch in the east or the north direction should be of two feet shorter in height than the main building. Porch with downward slope towards the north is very good.
* When the car is parked in the porch, its face should never be towards the south. As far as possible, it should be towards the east or the north. If the face comes towards the west of the northwest, the car remains in the porch for a very short time. It means that there is a lot of traveling. * The parking site of any building should not be in the northeast and the southwest corner. The best site is of course, in the northwest direction. If it is in the southeast corner, minor repair work is expected. If the parking is in the southwest corner it does not come out of the garage and is always out of order. Parking is suitable if done in the basement in the east or the north directions.
* For parking the gates in the east and the northwest direction are the best. However, the height of the gate should be less than that of the main gate of the wall compound. The pillars of the porch and the parking should not have arches or triangles. Porch should not be constructed with the support of the compound wall or by extending them. (It should be separately build from the main building.)
Colour Of Porch * The proper colours for the porch are white, yellow or any other light colour. However, black and gray colour should be avoided.
General Guidelines For Porch
* If a business deal is to be finalized the vehicle should be kept with face towards the north on the previous night. It is beneficial. Administrators and officers should keep their vehicles with face towards the east. On the full moon day and Zero moon day, once should not cross the city boundary between 11 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the afternoon and at night. If you are traveling, you should take rest in this period. During this time due to the attraction and repulsion forces of the moon the atmosphere is charged which is conducive to accidents. Similarly, one should avoid to travel in the south and the southwest direction on Saturday.
34. Trees Direction Of Placement * Big trees should be avoided in the space surrounding the building and inside the boundary wall. The roots of big trees can damage the base of the wall compound and the building. The roots of big trees absorb the invisible power of the sunlight quickly. The good effect of these powerful rays is not obtained by the building. * If there are trees around the building, they should not be tall or thick leaves and not in the east or the north direction. The auspicious sun rays are blocked by them. There is no objection to such trees in the West and the south direction. However, such big trees should not be only in the west or in the south direction but in the both direction. The heavy weight of the trees spoil the balance of the building. * Useful trees of 3 to 5 feet height can be in the east and the north directions. There should be no tree of any kind, big, small, useful or otherwise in the northeast corner. *
No thorny plants or cactus should be in the four walls of the plot even for decorative
purposes. Because, except Rose, some medicinal plants like shatavari, all other plants are throwing negative rays out. Because of this unnecessary tension is created in the house. Cactus or thorny plants are endowed with demonic and evil properties. If cactus plants are at all to be kept, for every cactus plant two basil plants should be there. The basil plants reduce the evil effect of the cactus plants. But if possible, all the thorny plants should be uprooted and thrown away without any thought. No plant brought from a temple, bank of a river, stolen from any place or given by a person whom you dislike, should be planted in your plot. Saplings brought from a nursery should be planted. * No creepers, however beautiful, with flowers should be raised on the compound wall of the building in the east or the north direction. Creepers can be planted only in the garden. There is no harm to have a money plant in the house. However, it should not be planted outside the house with the support of a tree etc. Only around a temple, Banyan tree in the east. Audumbar (a type of banyan tree) on the south side, Pipal in the west can be planted, observing all the rules regarding the planting of these trees. These tree should not be planted around our residence or the place of business. * Any big or small, proper or improper, tree should not be planted in front of the main entrance of the building in any direction. * No big tree should be in close proximity of the compound wall. In the middle square of the old building, no big tree is good. Because there is a load in the place of Brahma and we are not capable to follow the rules for the fast like the old people. Therefore there should be no tree at the Bramhasthan. There is no harm if there are trees in the west and the south direction, outside the compound wall of our building. Minimum shade of trees should fall on our building between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. * Plantation of saplings and building of garden etc. is profitable during the auspicious constellations, Anuradha, Vishakha, Revati, Chitra, Pushya, Mriga etc.
Types Of Trees * Banana, Papaya, Mango, Pineapple, Lemon Nilgiri, Ashoka or Jamun trees etc. should not be in the east or the north direction of the building. Paucity of funds and children is experienced. Only in the south of the west there is no harm in having Ashoka, Almond, Pineapple, Nilgiri, Coconut, Neem, Lemon trees etc. * Rose, Shrubs, Champak, Parijat, Mogra and Merigold should be planted leaving the southeast, the southwest, the northeast corner in the west in the northwest or the east. There should be no trees in the north direction as far as possible.
34. Growing Plants, Trees and Creepers in the periphery of the house The Goddess of fortune will flee away from the resident of a house - even though he is leading a princely life - if the following plants or trees grow in the periphery of such a house. 1. Agaththi (coronilia grandiflora) 2. Alari (oleander) 3. Nanthiyavattam (Nerium Corundum) 4. Murukku (Indian Coral tree) 5. Erukku (Catotropis gigantean) 6. Paruthi (Cotton shrub) 7. Karungali (Ebony) 8. Aal (Banyan) 9. Puli (Tamarind) 10. Kal-aal (Ficus Vireus) 11. Naaval (Jumbo) According to the essence of Veda, it is ten times a better deed to dig up a tank than to dig up a well in a good site. It is again ten times a better deed to beget a good son than digging up ten tanks.
It is again ten times a better deed to plant and grow a good tree than to beget ten good sons. After constructing a house, people grow plants, creepers and trees in the front yard and at the back yard of the house. They reap good benefits by planting coconut, mango and other utility trees. They also get flowers for worshipping God, from the flowering plants they grow. In addition the appearance of the house surrounded by plants is quite appealing to the eyes and adds beauty to the house. By planting and growing plants, creepers and trees, the family will be benefited. The text written by MAYA however warns that there are certain trees that are beneficial and certain other trees which are maleficial to the welfare of the family. Maintaining a garden or growing plants, creepers and trees in the South East or South direction of the house is prohibited. Failure to observe this rule will lead to loss of property, fear, quarrel and falling sick often. Maintaining a garden or growing plants, creepers and trees in the East, West and North directions of the house will beget good children (sons and daughters) and a pleasant life. Both the house and its residents will not prosper, in which house trees such as Elandhai (Ziziphus jujuha), Sevvaazhai (Red plantain), Karu vaazhai (Black plantain) Maathulai (Pomegranate) are grown. The wealth and welfare that are naturally reaped by a family will be reduced if trees like Purasu, Sampanki, Naanai and Maththi kaagu are grown in the house. There will be loss of abundance of wealth and loss of son, if trees like Nelli (Phyllanthus embilica) and turmeric raezome are grown. Even if these plants grow by themselves, they must be completely weeded out. Growing a banyan tree in the eastern side, a peepul tree in the western side, an iththi tree (ficus viren) in the northern side of a house will bring in good fortune, bounty of wealth both monetary and grainy, an increase of the tribe and the comforts of royal life. Growing a peepul tree in the eastern side, an iththi tree (Ficus viren) in the southern side, a banyan tree in the western side and an aththi tree (Ficus racemoso) in the northern side is malefic to the growers, causing bereavements and loss of property. This is also true even if the above trees grow in the wild in the directions specified above. Coconut tree, being equivalent to the Karpaga vrisham, (a tree of the heaven yielding whatever is desired) is the most ideal tree to be grown during this present iron age of miseries (Kaliyuga). Also the mango trees and flowering plants could be ideally grown. Trees, plants, creepers and all other small plants enhance the power to the motions of the five elements of Earth, air, fire, water, and ether, which in turn influence the human beings to reap the benefits of longevity of life and good fortune. Even in the foreign countries people grow plants of some kind or other in their gardens or indoors with the strong belief that it will drive away the poverty. Further, based on this
same belief they have started growing plants in important locations, thus strengthening their belief. The book of Vedas (the holy book of the Hindus) makes it known for the one who let grows a sacred Vilva tree (Crataeva religiose), all the sins he had committed in his previous births will be completely annihilated, all his descendants for the succeeding twenty one generations will reap the benefit of a life without poverty, beget children, get wealth with gems and jewels, get peace of mind without any enemies and be blessed with the benefit of living in the holy land of the Hindus (Punniya Bhoomi). Similarly for the one who grows and worship a sacred Tulsi (Holy Basil) plant (Ocymum Sanctum) the sins he had comitted in all his former births will totally be annihilated and he will earn the merits of having lived in the heaven for thousand years for having worshipped the holy basil for one day and all his descendants for the succeeding 21 generations will be blessed with the comforts of a royal life having got in their possession the two species of gold one in the form of chank (conch) and the other in the form of a lotus of the heaven (Sanga nidhi and Paduma nidhi), regarded as possessing life and yielding whatever is desired.
35. Well Allocation Normally a well is dug at the back side of the house. A well should be dug in Chitirai, Vaigasi and Aani. Aadi and Avani months are also OK. This does not mean that other months are not suitable for digging wells but there is a possibility of the well drying up. Well can be dug in the East, West and Northeast of the house. The well should not be dug in the South, Southwest and Northwest. The well should never in the centre of the house. It is considered to be not good for Family head. The well should not be surrounded by trees. The leaves will spoil the water. Alum, Gooseberry bark, Limestone keeps the water pure. According to tradition, poojas should be performed before digging the well. The stars which are auspicious for constructing the well are: Mirugasirisham, Vishagam, Puram, Tiruvonam Fourth house. The well should not be dug during Ashtami, Navami, Chandrashtami, Prathamai. The digging should start within three hours of the sunrise. The well shouldn't be dug during dusk.

Defects And Their
Effects Any energy is a flow of a field from a higher potential to the lower. This can be mechanical,
electrical or cosmic. The laws are the same. A plot represents both the positive and negative forces in a balanced sphere. This balance gets disturbed when the structure is placed in it. A balance in a plot is achieved when the positive and negative parts of the plot has an equal potential.
(Fig1)
Here the north and east portions represent the positive field and the south and west portions represent the negative field. Granting that the level in the plot is uniform we have a well-balanced plot. An imbalance between the two fields can be created by the following methods. 1) Increasing the level of any sector weakens that sector. 2) Reducing the level by taking away the earth increases the strength of that particular sector. 3) Creating extensions increases the area of that particular sector thereby increasing the strength of that particular sector. 4) Water bodies enhance the strength of that particular sector
Let us understand the concepts more clearly with the help of these figures.
(Fig 2)
(Fig 3)
In fig (2), you find that the level of the positive sector is higher in comparison to the negative sector. Because of this the strength of the positive field decreases and the negative increases. In this case energy flows from the negative portion to the positive portion. In essence the plot therefore has, what is known as the ‘negative energy’ flow. See the fig (3) where the higher level is in the negative sector. In this case, the energy flows from the positive to negative side and hence the plot has a natural ‘positive’ energy flow.
Reducing the level again results in the same impact as explained in Fig (2) and (3).
(Fig 4)
(Fig 5)
(Fig 6-a)
If the plot extends in a positive direction then the area covered by the positive portion increases and provided the level is uniform, the flow of energy takes place from the sector, which has the extended corner towards the other side. See fig (4). Here the northeast portion is extended. Hence the field area of the positive sector is more. If the level is uniform, the flow takes place from the positive side to the negative resulting in a positive energy plot. The reverse happens in case the negative portion extends. See fig (5). As the negative sector is more powerful, a negative current flows towards the positive turning the energy flow pattern into ‘negative’. A water body basically represents a depression. Water can collect only when a portion of the land is depressed or is at a lower level.
(Fig 6-b)
(Fig 6-c)
See Fig (6-a).A water body in the ‘positive’ sector makes the positive half more powerful, resulting in a ‘positive’ flow. See Fig (6-b).Same effect is achieved if a heavy body like a rock is in southwest. See Fig (6-c).A water body in the negative sector increases the negativity of that sector resulting in a ‘negative flow’.
Vaasthu For Buildings So far we have discussed the positive and negative features of plots. We will now see how the constructional aspects of the building affect the flow. It should be noted that the plot can only generate a positive field if the plot confirms to Vaasthu. But the building should be constructed in such a manner that it receives the flow thus generated. So we see that actually there are two aspects in the construction of buildings. One, the plot which should generate a positive field and second, the building which
should receive the field inside. Technically therefore it is possible to have a powerful field but a wrong structure could make the complete Vaasthu ineffective. Conversely it possible to have a building exactly confirming to Vaasthu but on a wrong plot which again nullifies the Vaasthu effects. Same analogy applies for the buildings too. To get the Vaasthu benefits, therefore, the plot must generate a strong field and the structure must be so designed as to receive it. Only then the Vaasthu benefits will reach the residents.
(Fig 7)
(Fig 10) In Fig (10).It shows a building in which the toilet is present in the northeast corner. Defecation and fecal matter arrests the positive flow with the result that the building becomes Vaastu negative.
(Fig 8)
(Fig 11)
In Fig (11) we have a staircase in the northeast corner. Again weight here arrests the flow inside the structure.
See (Fig 7). Here the plot is as per Vaasthu and the building, which is on the ground floor, is properly placed to receive the positive energy. See (Fig 8) the building covers the positive sector, thereby weakening it and the wrong sectors are opened up, making them stronger. In this case the building receives a negative flow and granting that the building is as per Vaasthu, the benefits of Vaasthu to the residents do not follow.
(Fig 12)
In Fig (12), a store closing the northeast corner negates the flow.
(Fig 13)
In Fig (13), a kitchen comes in the way of the structure receiving the positive current. Heat in this sector virtually nullifies all the positive currents.
(Fig 14)
In Fig (14), a bathroom comes in the way of the structure receiving the positive current. Heat in this sector virtually nullifies all the positive currents.
(Fig 15)
A higher floor level in northeast sector of the building as shown in fig (15) again prevents the flow from taking place.
(Fig 16) Wrong entry or exit doors in the northnorthwest, the southsouthwest, the westsouthwest and the eastsoutheast disrupts the flow of energy inside a structure. The effect is more pronounced if they are single doors. The effect gets reduced somewhat if there is another door in the northeast sector of the building.
( Fig 17)
In fig (17) the floor levels are lower in the southwest sector. Here again the energy flow does not take place.
One should note that the terms ‘entry’ door or ‘main’ door and ‘exit’ door or ‘back’ door are relative terms, which is used only for identification purposes. The flow can always take place from northeast to southwest. Whether your plot faces north/east or south/west, the direction of the flow remains the same. Only in case of west and south-facing plots, the entry door for the forces are at the back of the building whereas for north/east-facing plots, the entry door is in the front of the building as far as forces are concerned.
Fig (19) shows the levels and placements of the various utilities inside the structure to get the best Vaastu benefits. Here you see that openings are kept in the northeast sector readily allowing the energy to easily enter. A depressed level here sucks the current making a strong field inside.
(Fig 18)
The kitchen in the southeast and toilet and bath in the northwest aid the flow to reach all sectors in full strength. The bedrooms are placed in the southwest, west and the south where abundant
reflected bioenergy ensures the health of the members of the family. The kitchen in the southeast and toilet and bath in the northwest aid the flow to reach all sectors in full strength. The bedrooms are placed in the southwest, west and the south where abundant reflected bioenergy ensures the health of the members of the family.
(Fig 19)
We will now see how the first floor and subsequent floors can suffer from Vaastu defects. A first floor has no periphery. Thus the fact that you have a very good northeast current in the ground floor is of no consequence here. The plot of the first floor is the roof of the ground floor. Thus to have good Vaastu benefits we need to provide low level open terraces in the northeast sector so that sufficient energy to sustain the requirement of the first floor building is generated in the open roof area. Necessarily the balconies and open terraces are to come towards the north, east and the northeast.
(Fig 20) Here the building abuts on the Southwest corner leaving sufficient open space in north and east. Provided the structure conforms to Fig (19) we have a perfect house, which abides by Vaastu and its principles. See fig (20)
(Fig 21) See fig (21). Here we have balconies in the north-northwest or the west-southwest or the south-southwest or east-southeast. If there are no balancing balconies in the northeast sector, then the house has defective Vaastu.
(Fig 22)
(Fig 23)
(Fig 24)
( Fig 25)
Fig (22) shows a structure with an extension in north, towards the northwest and empty space in the northeast. This results in a negative flow as firstly, the energy giving sector is missing and secondly the extension liberates negative field. Extension of the building in the east-southeast (Fig 23), the south-southwest (Fig 24) and the west-southwest (Fig 25) again results in the same phenomenon as explained for Fig 22.
(Fig 26)
(Fig 27)
(Fig 28)
( Fig 29)
Fig 26, 27, 28 and 29 show open roofs in the wrong sectors.
(Fig 30-a)
(Fig 30-b)
As already stated open roofs are energy liberating. If they are open in the wrong sector, then the negative field becomes strong. In all these cases, the structure suffers from poor Vaastu. Fig 30(a) a north to south Fig 30 (b) or from north to south can effectively stop the flow of energy as higher levels in the roof weakens that particular sector. In a roof, which slopes
from east to west, the roof level is higher in the east than in the west. The southwest becomes more powerful in this case and the northeast is weakened which results in the structure turning negative. Same results follow if the roof is high in the north and low in the south.
Effects Of The Defects We have now seen the defects that can occur in structures. We shall now see the effects of these defects. The effects vary depending on the purpose for which the building in question in used and the vulnerability of the individual concerned. For example, a defective northeast in an industry can bring about production problems, whereas the same defect in a business house could lead to depressed sales. If this defect is present in a residence then it could cause health problems among the residents. Again it is seen that a defect need not have the same effect on every family. For example, a kitchen in the northeast may aggravate the health problem of the eldest female in one house, but may act on the health of a male member in another house, while another may need a surgery following an accident. Similarly a toilet in northeast can result in severe financial losses for a businessman who uses his residence partly for official purposes too. Whereas the same defect in the case of a houses of a bank employee fails to produce any financial distress on him because the latter is simply not vulnerable to this defect. Thus a Vaastu defect in a building can affect its users differently depending on their own vulnerability. It is, therefore, important to analyse the defect in relation to the vulnerability factor and proceed further only if there are individuals who are vulnerable to the effects.
