INTRODUCTION

1st INTRODUCTION

Candali Tantra can be placed parallel with Kundalini Yoga. Both of them reveal the secret of human body, especially Yogi’s body, such as energy center (Chakra), energy path (Nadi), and the energy itself. One of the focus energy is “sacred fire” located inside human body. Candali, at the first time, is correlated with woman from the lowest caste; meanwhile, from Sanskrit ethymology, it can be also interpretated as a fierce sow, and many people interpretate the word as a female with impulsive anger. Tibetan interpretates Candali as something hot (Tummo), point out to the center of fire inside Tantra expert’s body. Candali is also called “female” Kundalini, in Tantra and Yoga Tradition; Kundalini which its activity from Muladhara (Root) Chakra and flowing upward. The difference is that Tantra emphasizes in destructive aspect whithout neglecting creative side; while in Yoga tradition, even thought destructive as well, it emphasizes the creative side (Shakti). Candali is really crucial to activate Kundalini. There is a difference between Tantra tradition and Yoga tradition in general. In Tantra tradition, “fire cord” in navel area is released; while in Yoga tradition, it is located in the base of spine – between anus and sex organ. By releasing “fire cord”, Candali, as the fire element (Agni Tattva), will flame in the navel, flow downward to perineum, mix with Kundalini (Tummo – Kundalini Stir), and flow upward through center energy path (Avadhuti). In a text literature, the mixing is called Fire Glow (Fire Light) or Son of the Death. This mixing will flow upward step by step to burn and penetrate all Chakras in the center energy path. Five elements are harmonized with chakras and burned by Tummo – Kundalini Stir. Firstly, earth element (Prithivi

INTRODUCTION Tattva) in Root Chakra (Muladhara Chakra) is brought upward. Then, water element (Apas Tattva) in Sex/Second Chakra (Svadhisthana Chakra) is brought upward; wind element (Vayu Tattva) in Heart Chakra (Anahata Chakra) is brought upward; ether element (Akasha Tattva) in Throat Chakra is brought upward. In Ajna Chakra, fire element will be diminished by wind element; and after reaching Crown Chakra (Sahasrara Chakra), all elements will be dissolved with the universe. In the next step, candali will destroy all old energy body (Micro-Cosmic) including deity. We can’t forget that in concept of Tantra, universe (Macro-Cosmic or Micro-Cosmic) consists of endless chain – circle of life and death. This chain is connected to “Self” in any level which cause humankind can’t reach eternity. Since the chain is endless, the only way is to destroy it using Candali together with Kundalini; which will destroy all the causes of uneternity, for a good reason to deliver Tantra practitioner to reach enlightenment, perfectness as humankind. Lhama Govinda explained that the process will through 5 steps: firstly, Sushumna (center energy path, from Muladhara Chakra to Sahasrara Chakra) will be filled by fire flame; secondly, in fingers; thirdly, in the arms; fourthly, all of the body, as though body become Sushumna, filled by fire flame; and the last, all will be developed to the climax: processes inside the body will be slower and stopped to reach Samadhi. In this condition, all the world, as though Sushumna, is filled by fire flame (Govinda, 1991: 186). Then, what will happen after the new energy body (Micro-Cosmic) is formed? Will Candali be and stay in the new stage? No. Candali will be gone in Tantric level, the same as other elements which were supported to be dissolved. As though it dissolves all Padma centers (Chakra) including Sahasrara, and as though it dissolves Boddhicitta; that is Candali in the new body energy (Micro-Cosmic) inside the Tantric practitioner.

INTRODUCTION

History of Candali (Tummo) Candali (Tummo) as describe earlier, has some meaning, i.e. in Tibetan is translated as something hot, which emphasizes to the source of fire inside Tantra practitioner. To make it easier, Candali means Sacred Fire. Candali (Tummo) was an esoteric, exoteric, and mystic study from great master in Himalaya in the past, and became a secret among Tibetan Lhamas. Until the end of twentieth century, this study was still hardly enough to be found outside Tibetan Lhamas. The history and development of Candali (Tummo) can’t be separated from the great masters, such as Tilopa, Naropa, Marpa, and especially “Milarepa”, whose clan teach Candali formally. The are still several great masters involved in the history of Candali (Tummo) such as great master Dharmakitri dan Atisha; so that there are some undebateable versions. It needs to be noted that studying Candali (Tummo) completely, can’t be separated from Buddhism and Hinduism because in the teaching and practicing of Candali (Tummo), will use the terms, symbols, mantras, and mudras from both traditions; as well as the aim of Candali (Tummo) ini in spiritual is to reach enlightenment, where the practice is as the foundation. This was revealed from the stages to reach enlightenment taught bu great master Tilopa to great master Naropa: 1. Candali (Sacred Fire) ; 2. Mayakaya (Illusory Body) ; 3. Svapna (Dream) ; 4. Prabhasvara (Luminosity) ; 5. Antarbhava (Gejolak Diri) ; 6. Mahamudra (Great Realm).

INTRODUCTION You may also find other meaning of the steps because those terms are originally Sanskrit which are difficult to be translated.

Sathya Tummo I will hereby explain Tummo (Candali) method from my own tradition which probably a bit different (I would not say as a strong point … ) from other Tummo (Candali) traditions. It is called Sathya Tummo (Sathya Candali) based on 14 points in Vajra Samaya (Vajra Pledge) which correlated with the word “Sathya” that means truth, righteousness, faithfulness, and reality (Sanskrit Glossary). In the process of founding Sathya Tummo tradition, I receive lineage from many traditions, initiations, and teachings, for example: 1. Vajra Master gTummo Maoshan dan Vajra Master gTummo Exoteric from Vajra Master Satya Arka Parvateshwar (Edwin Aldrian), Vajra Master gTummo Dalai Lama from Vajra Master I Gusti Ngurah Agung Suryaputra, Master Tummo tradition from Vajra Master Mahavairochana Vajrashakti (Prianggito Sulistiono). 2. Mahamudra teaching (2003 – 2005) from H.H Ogyen Trinley Dorje, Gyalwa Karmapa XVII ; 3. Sathya Tummo is using Mystic and Esoteric approach in the practice so that it is more to the use of energy pattern, mantra, mudra, and visualization instead of symbols. Sathya Tummo has 5 levels, in which the 3 level (Master) and thereafter will be considered carefully for some reasons (will be explained further later).

v SATHYA TUMO

VMG DHARMASATYA SARVAYUDHAVISARADA

INTRODUCTION Level 1 (Respa / Sakalikaran) In this level, Candali (Tummo) sacred fire which is fire element inside human body will be activated from lower tantien. Energy path, especially Sushumna, Ida, and Pingala, will be opened so that Sathya Tummo energy will flow through all major energy paths. This level consists of 9 standard energy patterns and Baglamukhi body protector will be activated.

Level 2 (High Respa / Sadhana – Sadhaka) In this level, Candali (Tummo) sacred fire which is fire element inside human body will be activated from middle tantien so it will be stronger 108 times. Water element will also be activated. This level consists of 5 standard energy patterns, 2 additional energy patterns – to strengthen intuition and to form protection shield, and mantras. Mahakali body protector will be activated.

Level 3 (Master / Ucchattan / Vasheekaran) In this level, Candali (Tummo) sacred fire which is fire element inside human body will be activated from upper tantien so it will be stronger 1000 times. Wind element will also be activated. This level consists of 3 additional energy patterns: to cleanse negative energy in all body layers, diseases because of karmic, trauma, etc; to solve problems; and etheric weapon to destroy negative energy, disease, and negative entity. Because it also includes mantras which can be negative mantras if they are used with negative purposes, this level will be given selectively.

vi SATHYA TUMO

INTRODUCTION Level Vajra Master (Rishi) In this level, Candali (Tummo) sacred fire which is fire element inside human body will be activated from lower, middle, and upper tantien concurrently so it will be stronger 10,000 times. Ether element will also be activated. This level consists of 6 negativity energy patterns and 2 energy patterns to overcome negativity energy pattern and protection. Baglamukhi and Mahakali body protector will be strengthen into Vajra Baglamukhi and Vajra Mahakali body protector by dissolving 5 elements (earth, water, fire, wind, and ether) together with your spiritual conciousness. In this level, you have an authority to give angkur (ankur) Sathya Tummo to others.

Level Mahakala This is an external level whereas Mahakala mantra will be initiated and transmitted to you. Mahakala is one of Dharma Protector (Dharmapala) and you will receive White Mahakala transmission, a powerful abundance and prosperity protector. Through White Mahakala transmission, it is hoped that you’ll be helped in prosperity and luck, especially in family, business, and spiritual.

2nd INTRODUCTION

Before practicing Sathya Tummo, it will be helpful to learn about energy centers (Chakra), energy path (Nadi), energy formations prior to it.

CHAKRA There are 365 Chakras (Pusat energy) in human body, and 7 major chakras among them. Actually, these chakras are not only energy center but also the center of conciousness.

1.

Muladhara Chakra (Root Chakra) :

Muladhara Chakra (Chakra Dasar) is located in the base of spine. It has 4 petals with bija akshara LA. Its element is earth (Pritthivi Tattva) which give physical strength, healthy body and ageless. This chakra is the mouth of Sushumna Nadi and Kanda, a place where Nadi starts.

viii SATHYA TUMO

INTRODUCTION 2.

Svadhisthana Chakra (Sex Chakra) :

This chakra is located in the spine parallel with the upper part of genital. It has 6 petals with water element (Apas Tattva) which give the ability to endure hunger and thirst in a ling time. By controlling Apas Tattva, someone can walk on the water. Its bija akshara is VA.

3.

Manipura Chakra (Navel Chakra) :

. This chakra is located in the spine and parallel with navel. It has 6 petals with bija akshara RA. Its element is fire (Agni Tattva) which can give ability to eat and drink a lot, stand of sunlight and fire, and walk in a long distance. By controlling Agni Tattva, someone can levitate.

INTRODUCTION 4.

Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra) :

This chakra is located in the spine and parallel with the middle of chest. It has 12 petals with bija akshara YA. Its element is wind (Vayu Tattva). By controlling Vayu Tattva, someone can move freely in the air likes a bird and has an ability to be in several places at the same time.

5.

Visuddha Chakra (Throat Chakra) :

This chakra is located in the top of the spine. It has 16 petals with bija akshara HA. Its element is Ether (Akasha Tattva). By controlling this element, someone has an ability to listen voice/sound from other dimensions, not breathing in a long time, and know about past, present, and future. Akasha Tattva is also known as black hole in eteric body.

INTRODUCTION 6.

Ajna Chakra :

This chakra is located in the middle of the eye brow and has 2 petals.

7.

Sahasrara Chakra :

This chakra has 1000 petals which comes from the number of all petals from Muladhara to Ajna Chakra, multiplied by 8 compass points, added by multiplication 50 times 2 vertical direction (up and down), and then multiply by 2 diagonal direction. Mathematically written as: {50 X (8+2)} X 2 = 1000.

Other chakras are: Amrita, Ananda, Lalita, Balvana, Brahmadvara, Chandra, Dipaka, Karnamula, Gulhaha, Kuladipa, Kundali, Galabaddha, Kaladaada, Kaladhvara, Karangaka, Kalabhedan, Lalana, Mahotsaha, Manas, Talana, Mahapadma, Niradhara, Naukula, Prana, Soma, Triveni, Urdhvarandhra, Vajra, and there are still others.

VMG DHARMASATYA SARVAYUDHAVISARADA

INTRODUCTION NADI Beside chakra as an energy center, there are also energy paths in side human body which connect one with the other chakra. There are 72,000 nadis with 3 major nadis, i.e. Ida Nadi, Pingala Nadi, and Sushumna Nadi (the most important nadi). Spine is called Meru – danda, an extension of Kanda (located between anus and genital) to the base of cranium. There are 2 Nadis (Ida and Pingala), in parallel position with the spine, with Sushumna Nadi in between them. Ida starts from right testicle while Pingala from the left, and both meet with Sushumna in Muladhara Chakra. Ida flows along left nose which makes the body cold (Ida is also called moon brething); and Pingala flows along right nose which makes the body warm/hot (Pingala is also called as sun breathing). Sushumna starts from Muladhara Chakra until the top of the head. IdaPingala and Sushumna breathing will be explained further in appendix. Other nadis: Gandhari, Hastajihva, Kuhu, Sarasvati, Pusha, Sankhini, Payasvini, Varuni, Alambusha, Vishvodhara, Yasasvini, and there are still many.

KUNDALINI Kundalini is originally from Sankrit word “Kundala” which means “coiled”. It works like spiral inside the body of a person who develops this power. This is an extraordinary pure power which can bring someone to the perfect enlightenment and highest conciousness. Kundalini is a main fire inside human body. Kundalini is a latent energy inside human body. Siddhi or perfectness can be achieved by activating the prime power laid in Muladhara Chakra in the base of the spine with the manifestation of a 3 ½-coiled-snake. Whoever activates the Kundalini and

xii SATHYA TUMO

VMG DHARMASATYA SARVAYUDHAVISARADA

INTRODUCTION directs it upward to reach Sahasrara Chakra, will have supreme power. All Siddhis and Riddhis (minor powers) will be within him/her. The person will have an ability to control the universe, including the five elements, and achieve the true and perfect enlightenment. When kundalini actives, this power will flow through Sushumna and its progress is indicated by supernatural things, vision, an ability to use specific power, science, peace, and joy. As kundalini reach Sahasrara Chakra (at top of the head), that person will achieve the supreme happiness. By the previous explanation, I hope you can differentiate Kundalini with Candali (Tummo) and understand that both are not the same.

ENERGY SOURCE Before dwelling on energy sources inside human body specifically, we will talk about Vayu (Note: Prana is a form of Vayu which is the main energy source inside human body).

Vayu : Universal energy is known as Vayu. Human body has 10 vayus which are responsible for all activities inside human body including breathing, blood flowing, excretion, and body movement. Those Vayus are prana, apana, samana, vyana, udana, naga, kurma, krkana, devadatta, dan dhanainjaya. Vayu works in 2 areas, i.e. inside and outside human body. Prana is an example of Vayu working inside human body. Prana is a vital energy to control heart beat and lung that cause the air goes in and out. Apana is the energy works between navel and anus which its function is to excrete the rest of metabolism as urine or faeces. Samana works around the navel to oversee the balance and harmonize prana and apana movement. Vyana works in the whole body to control blood

xiii SATHYA TUMO

VMG DHARMASATYA SARVAYUDHAVISARADA

INTRODUCTION circulation and bring the pulse or stimulation from the tip of neural system to the brain. Udana works in the throat area to control the larynx. Naga, an example of vayu outside human body, works when someone do motion such as jumping, swinging. Kurma works when someone do muscle contraction and causes the body shakes when someone feels cold. Krkara works when someone yawns, coughs, sneezes, and cramps. Devadatta causes someone feels hungry and thirsty. Danainjaya is an energy controlling sleepy and tired feeling. Physical aspect in human body is a mechanism of an organization that can’t work separately, instead there is a connection of job and function to be done by each part. Meanwhile, spiritual aspect can’t be separate because it has an important meaning for the soul. The body is alive because of the soul and the soul is expressed in the body. Balance will be achieved in human body if the body and the soul are sincronized and all body parts are synthesized to form the whole unity, i.e. human.

Main Energy Sources Basically, human has 3 main energy sources: 1. Prana : is one of Vayu which can be earned from breathing. Its function is to activate all body parts and control the temperature inside the body to react with environment temperature. This Prana has wind element. 2. Ojas : is an energy earned from beverage and liquid. Its element is water and can be found in beverage, vegetables, and fruits. 3. Tejas : is an energy earned from solid food. Its element is fire and can be found in meat, fish, egg, etc. It can also be found from vegetables such as onion and chili. Candali (Tummo) uses this Tejas energy.

INTRODUCTION MANTRA As I mentioned before, Sathya Tummo uses Mystic and Esoteric approach, where Mantra will be performed in the pratice. It will be useful if I explain the meaning of Mantra to avoid the misunderstanding and incredulity in the future prior to the practice. Mantra has 2 syllables, i.e. “Man” means mind and “Tra” means control. So that Mantra is aomething to control the mind. Mind is the most important thing in human conciousness and the highest energy in human body. Using the mind, Candali (Tummo) and Kundalini can be activated. Therefore, Sathya Tummo uses Mantraghata (the power of Mantra) in the practice. Even though Mantra in Sathya Tummo is using Sanskrit, it doesn’t mean that you betray your religion when you read the mantra because Sanskrit is not only Hinduism or Buddhism language, but it also the Mother of Language, which can connect human and universe.

MANTRAS

METHOD TO READ MANTRAS

To read/say Mantras: To read mantra has it own methods and there are a few of them: Padma, Samadhi, and Vajra. In Sathya Candali, to read mantras, we use Vajra method, i.e. closing the mouth and making no voices while the tongue moves when saying the mantras.

Time to Read Mantras Before explaining the suitable time to read mantras, it’s better for me to explain about breathing, the basic for mantras effectiveness. The breath flows through right nostril will make the body hot; on the other hand, that flows through left nostril will make the body cool. It has something to do with energy path (Nadi) as explained in introduction section before. When someone is breathing, one nostril is dominant than other which means that more breathe will be through that nostril and the associated Nadi will be more active. For example, if the right nostril is dominant, Pingala Nadi will be more active and the body will be hot, which is called Pingala Breathing. On the other hand, if the left nostril is dominant, Ida Nadi will be more active and the body will be cool, which is called Ida Breathing. Every 2 hours, someone experiences a switchover from Ida to Pingala and vise versa. If a day starts (around 6 a.m.), and someone breaths stronger through left nostril (Ida Breathing); it is called Ida Day. And if a day starts with right nostril, it is called Pingala Day. In the new moon, a woman starts her day (around 6 a.m.) with Pingala Breathing until 7:50 a.m. For 10 minutes until 8 a.m., there is a switchover from Pingala to Ida. Right at 9 a.m., Ida Breathing is taking over until 9:50 a.m. and there’s a switchover from

MANTRAS  Ida to Pingala for 10 minutes. The cycle will then continue. Pingala Breathing for a woman will end in the second day after new moon. In the third day, a woman starts her day (around 6 a.m.) with Ida Breathing until 7:50 a.m. For 10 minutes until 8 a.m., there is a switchover from Ida to Pingala. Right at 9 a.m., Pingala Breathing is taking over until 9:50 a.m. and there’s a switchover from Pingala to Ida for 10 minutes. The cycle will then continue. (See Table for further explanation). The same goes to a man with the contrary cycle. When a woman breaths with Ida breathing dominantly, a man will experience Pingala breathing. It is simply because the negative and positive pole in a woman is the opposite of those in a man. In a woman, the positive pole is in her right side and the negative pole is in her left side. In a man, the positive pole is in his left side and the negative pole is in his right side, so that when a man faces a woman, the negative and positive pole will be in the same side.

Brain and mind are connected with breath. During Ida breathing, right brain will be more dominant and during Pingala breathing, left brain will be more dominant. Pingala breathing is the suitable time to do physical things such as exercising, hiking, even sex activity. It also includes any activities using left brain, logic, etc. Ida breathing is the suitable time to read, study, take a pray and read mantras, and everything that need mind tranquility. Beside Ida and Pingala breathing, during the switchover from Pingala to Ida or the opposite, breathing can be switched from Ida to Pingala or both breathing at the same time. This switchover is called Sandhi, which is Sushumna breathing. It happens naturally after midnight (around 2 a.m.). Sushumna breathing is the most suitable time to

MANTRAS  do Dhyana (meditation). By doing Dhyana during Sushumna breathing, someone will achieve Samadhi easily. To summarize, during Ida breathing is the best time to read mantras because the result will be maximum and efficient. But, we can also read mantras during Pingala breathing by using left nostril (Ida breathing), i.e. tied the right arm strongly.
