Foreword A short or comparatively easy composition need not necessarily be bad music or obviously vulgar. I assume that the apprentice student, the amateur, the young professional and the proven artist all have musical good taste and want superior music to play at every stage of the development. Accordingly, this is a compilation of flute music in the medium-to-easy category by some of the greatest composers in the world. Most of the works were originally written for the flute. In those pieces arranged for flute and piano I have tried to be as faithful to the composer’s intentions as possible. I have added a few metronome marks, a few breath marks, and put in a variety of phrasings, slurs, tongueings, dynamics, etc, to give an idea of the manner in which the piece might be played. If however, the performer will impart a mood of their own, based on the composer’s style and historical period, it will add to both the musical result and to their enjoyment of playing it. D.P.

About Donald Peck Donald Peck, who joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as principal flutist at the invitation of Fritz Reiner, has been a frequent soloist with the Orchestra in Orchestra Hall, at the Ravinia Festival and on tour. Mr. Peck also appears as soloist with other orchestras. He has been featured at the Casals Festival of Puerto Rico, at concerts in San Juan, Dominican Republic, and at New York’s Carnegie Hall. In addition to appearing as orchestra soloist, recitalist and clinician at the Johannensen International Festival of the Arts, Victoria, Canada, he performed for three seasons at the Carmel Bach Festival in California, and in Australia under the auspices of the Australian Broadcasting Commission. Active in the field of chamber music, Mr. Peck has given recitals throughout the United States in such cities as New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Kansas City and Baltimore, as well as Chicago. He performs as a member of the Chicago Symphony Chamber Players, and Woodwind Quintet. A faculty member of the DePaul University, Donald Peck teaches flute and woodwind ensemble and is a frequent guest teacher and lecturer at other colleges and universities. His annual week of eight sessions in the summer at DePaul University draws an international group of young professionals to study with him. He is now involved in music editing projects for three separate publishing houses. Current music includes works of Mozart (original cadenzas for the concertos), Andersen, Debussy, Franck and Chaminade. Mr. Peck received his early musical training in Seattle in his native state of Washington. As a youngster he played in the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and the semi-professional Seattle Philharmonic, and was accepted as a member of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra while still in his early teens. At 18 he received a scholarship to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he studied flute with William Kincaid. Between graduation and his position with the Chicago Symphony he played with the Washington National Symphony, the Kansas City Philharmonic, the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra and the U.S. Marine Band and Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C.
