4 Read and write T (true), F (false) or DS (doesn’t say). Last week, Mrs Graham visited our school to talk to us about inventions. When she was a girl, she wanted to be an inventor herself, but she decided to study history. She likes reading about inventions that we use every day. She talked about two inventors from the USA: Josephine Cochrane and Percy Spencer. Josephine Cochrane was born in 1839. She was a very rich woman who liked having parties, but didn’t like washing the dishes. Her servants did this for her, but she wasn’t very happy because sometimes they broke the plates. She wanted a machine to wash her plates quickly and without breaking them. She invented the first dishwasher in 1886. In

the beginning, it was used in hotels and restaurants, then in people’s houses. Percy Spencer was a scientist who worked with radars in the 1940s. One day he walked past a radar machine and a chocolate bar in his pocket melted. Percy noticed this and went to get some popcorn seeds. He put the seeds in front of the machine and they started popping! That’s how he invented the microwave. Percy didn’t finish school, but he learned chemistry, physics and maths by himself. Isn’t he amazing? ‘There are many important inventors who invented things by accident,’ said Mrs Graham. ‘But like Percy, they were all very observant and worked very hard.’

A FUN INVENTION! Smartphones are a great invention. There are lots of applications you can have for less than £5. Here are some fun apps for children or adults. A Curious George’s Town (£2.49)

B On this day (£0.99)

Children (4 years old and older) organise the vegetables in the market, learn the alphabet in the library and help recycle in the park. They win coins (not real ones!) which they can save or use to build their town and buy farm animals (and dinosaurs).

Choose any day of the year and get information on events that happened in the past on that day. For example, what happened on 7th April? Well, Keith Kellogg created the cereal Corn Flakes in 1860, and the famous artist El Greco died in 1614. This app is great for teenagers and adults.

C The Shape Monster (free) This game is for children aged two and up, and it helps them to learn the shapes. The Shape Monster is a friendly but hungry monster. He tells the children what shape he wants to eat and they give it to him. There are two levels for different ages.

D Waze (free) This app is used by drivers who prefer to have satnav technology on their phone. They can build their own maps, get information on the traffic and directions as they drive. When there are problems, they can send this information to other drivers who have the app.

CAPTAIN JAMES COOK Captain James Cook was a famous explorer. He was born in 1728 in England and lived on a farm until he was about 18. He loved the sea and decided to work on a ship. He was very good at making maps and as a captain he introduced important changes for his sailors’ health and safety. For example, he asked them to wash every day and eat lots of fresh fruit. He left for his first journey on August 26, 1768 and didn’t return until July 1771. Cook travelled around the South Pacific and created maps of the islands. He didn’t discover Australia or New Zealand, but he was the first to see the east coast of Australia and the first to sail around and map the islands of New Zealand.

He liked the kangaroos and other animals in Australia. The scientists who travelled with Captain Cook collected and recorded many plants and animals. On this first expedition, Captain Cook first visited Tahiti. The natives on this island were very nice and some of Cook’s men didn’t want to leave. The Maoris, the natives in New Zealand, weren’t so friendly and there was a fight between them and Cook’s men. They also had tattoos on their faces and some of Cook’s sailors wanted to have them on their arms. They started a tradition that continues today. In his third and last expedition, Captain Cook visited the Hawaiian Islands. Unfortunately, there was a fight with the natives and Cook was killed there.
