“A truly great guy. Rest in peace Michael,” tweeted former American Idol judge Simon Cowell.

A SINGER’S SAD END

FINDING SUCCESS “So sad. Too soon. Thank you for sharing your talents with us,” Idol judge Randy Jackson tweeted of Johns (below, in 2008), who sang Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” for his Idol audition.

HIS FURRY PAL Johns (with his dog Puddy on Feb. 3) was “the sweetest guy,” Idol winner Caleb Johnson tells PEOPLE.

HIS LEADING LADY “My wife is my rock,” Johns said of interior designer Stacey Vuduris, whom he wed in 2007.

Fans of American Idol alum Michael Johns were surprised when the talented Australian singer was eliminated from the show’s seventh season in 2008. But news of the 35-year-old’s sudden death from a blood clot on Aug. 1 was a shock that no one saw coming. “Our family is devastated by the passing of our beloved Michael, a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle and friend,” his loved ones said in a statement. Family members in Australia headed to the U.S. to be with Johns’s wife, Stacey Vuduris, and began making plans for a private memorial. Born in Perth, Johns—who first came to the U.S. on a tennis scholarship— played gigs in Atlanta and recorded a smattering of songs with his band the Rising before finding success on ldol. His rugged looks and gravelly voice propelled him into the Top 10. After exiting Idol he continued to pursue his passion, most recently releasing an EP called Love & Sex in 2012. On July 10 Johns tweeted that he had returned to the studio and was working on a new song called “Reckless.” Longtime friend Kevin Haaland, who had been recording with Johns in recent months, tells PEOPLE that the singer’s influence extends beyond his memorable voice: “Anyone who came into contact with him was affected in some way. He was special.” —MIA MCNIECE AND PATRICK GOMEZ

SELENA GOMEZ

INSIDE HER SEXY SINGLE LIFE Now this is how you rebound! From lounging on a yacht in Saint-Tropez to flaunting a new, mature style, Selena Gomez is having a smokin’ hot summer. “It was great for her to get away and just have fun,” a pal says about her trip to France, where she celebrated her 22nd birthday with new BFF Cara Delevingne. ‘She’s having fun like any 22-yearold. She’s happy’ —A GOMEZ PAL vacation was a welcome respite for the star, who has had a rocky 2014. In January she did a two-week stint in rehab following a breakup with Justin Bieber, 20. “She wanted to move on from that toxic relationship,” the pal says of

the non-substance-abuserelated stay. Although the pair made several cozy outings in June, Gomez “is not talking to [Bieber right now],” says the pal. “She did not get back together with him. She knows it’s not healthy, but it’s not easy to make that clean break.” That’s not the only split Gomez has made: In April she told her parents she no longer wanted them to manage her. “Firing your parents is never going to be smooth,” says the pal, who denies reports of a family feud. Any reports of drug problems are bunk too. “It’s just not true,” says the pal. For now, Gomez is focusing on work (her film Rudderless, starring Billy Crudup, is out Oct. 17) and moving forward. “She’s in a good place,” adds the friend. —MELODY CHIU

Outlander

One of summer’s best new shows, this smart, sexy fantasy introduces a smashing heroine TV DRAMA Based on the bestselling books by Diana Gabaldon, the ambitious, swooningly

good Outlander combines time travel with historical romance. Even better, it unites these strands in a heroine—British combat nurse Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe)—who has the most elegant neck since Rachel Weisz and a searching intelligence that allows her to quickly grasp her predicament: She’s been inexplicably transported from 1940s Scotland (which was proving a bit drab for her) back to the grubby, dangerous, yet surprisingly sexy 1740s. She’s a great character—resilient, subtle, gorgeous, the Alicia Florrick of fantasy. (STARZ, Aug. 9, 9 p.m.) PEOPLE August 18, 2014

Some of those icons—Willie Nelson and Tom Petty, among others—pay their respect to the singer-songwriter, who passed away last year, on this star-studded LP. Led by Clapton (who won a Grammy with Cale for 2006’s The Road to Escondido and covered Cale’s “Cocaine” to hit-making results), the album is a faithful salute to 16 of Cale’s songs, three of which were never published. The result: a low-key, rambling sound that’s a proper send-off to a low-key legend.

REVEAL THE GODDESS IN YOU.

The Knick

The doctor will see you now—lucky you! TV DRAMA Directed by Steven Soderbergh (Behind the Candelabra), this drama about life in a New York City operating room in 1900 has a tone all its own. Deep-shadowed and emotionally spare, it’s as if Boardwalk Empire were in fact filmed under a boardwalk. But Soderbergh is a man of immense style and storytelling skill: Accept his terms and you’ll be drawn in. Knick stars Clive Owen, hair billowing up in a cloud, as Dr. John Thackery, who keeps going with the assist of cocaine injected between his toes. The surgery scenes, which include a patient set ablaze by a cauterizing machine, are brilliant: harshly clinical, matter-of-fact. (Cinemax, Aug. 8, 10 p.m.)

Extreme Guide to Parenting

TV REALITY “All happy

families are alike. Each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” These are among the wisest words ever said by Bravo executive Andy Cohen—actually, it may have been Tolstoy— and they are borne out in an entertaining but unsettling series about parents tackling child-raising challenges with eccentric approaches. One mother, steeped in mystical talk of auras, describes her struggling son as an “indigo”— a special creature who shouldn’t require medication. You might be inclined to laugh, but the issues here are pretty painful. (Bravo, Thursdays, 9:30 p.m.)

Everyone’s doing the twister in a mindless but entertaining movie about bad weather No. MOVIE ACTION Shot documentary-style and clocking in at just under 90 minutes, Into the Storm at first seems as innocuous as a dry Gremlin—it’s a scruffy, unassuming little thing. Add a few drops of precipitation, though, and it shows its fangs. This is Twister for the Paranormal Activity crowd. The movie operates off a bare-bones premise: A terrifying storm system is moving in on the town of Silverton—oh, wait, now it seems to be going off track—no, no, here it comes—while the local high school celebrates graduation and storm chasers race around the vicinity, their eyes peeled and searching the roiling skies. The twisters, once they begin touching down, are very well done—the King Kong of the bunch appears to be roughly the size of the state of Delaware—and there’s a superb sequence in which survivors in a storm drain are mercilessly pulled and knocked about by tunneling winds. The humans, maybe not surprisingly, don’t amount to much in all this: Sarah Wayne Callies (The Walking Dead) comes off best as the most sensitive and intelligent of the chasers. As the school’s vice principal, Richard Armitage (The Hobbit) is so furiously blank he occasionally suggests Steve Carell in the Anchorman movies. (PG-13)

‘FIERY’ LOVE Carolyn turned him down a few times in the beginning. Given who he was, she didn’t think he was serious. He was flummoxed—challenged. He couldn’t believe she turned him down. He kept figuring out ways to come back to Calvin Klein for business meetings and additional fittings. There was a side of John that was kind of awkward. They met in 1994 at the Calvin Klein showroom in New York City. He was the world’s most eligible bachelor—the only son of a revered President, coming into his own as the founding editor of George magazine. She was the stunning fashion publicist in charge of celebrity relations, on hand to show him the new collection. “He was instantly attracted to her,” recalls his friend and longtime assistant RoseMarie Terenzio. Though he didn’t yet know it, he had met his match. “John and Carolyn were magic together,” says his friend Gustavo Paredes. “She had an earthiness and a gentle fierceness. Together, they were whole.” Married on Sept. 21, 1996, the pair weathered rumors of discord: The fiercely private Carolyn was labeled an ice queen, while John struggled to ease her into the spotlight with which he had grown up. But both the troubles and the notion of their being American royalty were exaggerated, say those who knew them: John was a regular guy with a goofball side, while Carolyn was a warm confidante with a mischievous sense of humor. “The world saw them as this prince and princess,” says Matt Berman, the creative director of George and author of a new memoir, JFK Jr., George & Me (see box). “But they were the most real and engaging people I’ve ever known.” On July 16, 1999, the plane 38-year-old John was piloting en route to his cousin Rory’s wedding crashed off Martha’s Vineyard, killing him, 33-yearold Carolyn and her sister Lauren, 34. Fifteen years later close friends open up about the golden couple they loved.

“They lived in the moment,” says Matt Berman. “John wasn’t talking about if he was going to be President. He talked about what he was having for dinner.” Clockwise from bottom left: Carolyn with a pal’s daughter in 1997; John at George in 1997; John with the son of a close friend in 1993; Carolyn ca. 1997 on Martha’s Vineyard; John with Provi Paredes ca. 1981 on Martha’s Vineyard.

Jr. way. She saw John for who he was, and she loved him for it. —RoseMarie Terenzio, author of the memoir Fairy Tale Interrupted

They were very affectionate. Sometimes almost too much, where you got a little embarrassed. He’d come in and give her a kiss, and you’d think, “I gotta go now.” They didn’t care who was looking. —Matt Berman John and Carolyn were fiery. They would love hard and they would fight hard. When people said they were having issues, it wasn’t that. She was a little bit more dramatic. Even when they fought, they’d always make up. One time we were gabbing in the living room in

Hyannis Port, and John walked by to go upstairs for the night; she knew it was time to end our conversation. “This is one of those things you’ll learn when you get married and get older,” she said. “Sometimes you gotta do what they want you to do.” She was trying to teach me about relationships. —Ariel Paredes, Gustavo’s daughter

Did they argue? Yes. Did they have fights or disagreements? Absolutely. Carolyn was very protective. A lot of their disagreements came from her feeling he was being taken advantage of and him feeling she was too protective. They kind of gave it to each other in a funny way. They were playful. She’d

tease him about his pants—they were always too short. So she found him a tailor. He would go at her all the time about being on the phone: “How many hours a day can you possibly be on the phone? Who are you talking to?” She’d tease him about blondes being his type. One Valentine’s Day she sent 10 different bouquets to the office, from all the famous blondes she could think of, and signed them, “Love, Pamela Anderson; Love, Claudia Schiffer.” He thought it was hysterical. —RoseMarie Terenzio There were ups and downs. I once asked John, “Does the staring bother you?” He said, “I don’t know what it’s like to walk into a room and not have everybody staring. That’s how it’s always been for me.” Carolyn didn’t love the spotlight. It was something she knew she’d have to get used to, but it was not easy, especially when she couldn’t leave her apartment with the paparazzi camped outside. A lot of people said she got the prize, but honestly, I think John did. Carolyn was so extraordinary. Funny, beautiful. No 60

At [John’s] mother’s house Carolyn liked to stay in bed with the dogs, all warm and cozy. John would want her in the boat. A cold boat. He had that nervous energy where he always had to do something. He wasn’t a hanging-out, laying-around kind of guy. —Matt Berman We used to have Thanksgivings together at Hyannis Port. I’d cook for them. Carolyn didn’t know how to cook too much, but she wanted to learn. John would ask me to tell Carolyn about his mother. I told her how she liked to spoil John a little but she’d get angry with him when he was a teenager and would take her car without permission to Martha’s Vineyard. We talked about how his mother liked clothes, how she didn’t go shopping when we

A Friend’s Farewell As news sank in that they were gone, Matt Berman went to the George offices. I walked into John’s office. The door was unlocked, and for the millionth time I thought, I can’t believe the maids don’t lock this door, with those priceless mementos that belonged to John’s dad. The office, usually buzzing with activity and laughter, was a silent shrine. Sneakers and stinky socks cluttered the floor, piles of manuscripts lay on the table, a plastic fork and a container from a salad bar were still damp with dressing. Most upsetting was a

yellow Post-it stuck to John’s phone receiver, written in red Sharpie in Rose’s familiar handwriting, “Lauren downstairs in 5.” I felt queasy and walked out of the room. I remembered the night before, when John was on his way out and breezed past my office, saying, “See you Monday, Maestro!” I saw only his back as I leaned out into the hall to yell good-bye.

THE FINAL WEEKS A lot of John’s stress at that time was because his cousin and best friend Anthony Radziwill was dying of cancer. He was devastated. John would go almost every night after work. Carolyn was there, bringing food. She didn’t want to go to Rory’s wedding on the Cape that last weekend. She’d just come from spending a week in the hospital with Anthony. I think she would have liked to stay home, but she knew it was important to go for John. —RoseMarie Terenzio I once asked him about “the Kennedy curse.” He said, “Well, there is no curse.” He said the way the Kennedys were raised was that they could do anything. The only thing bigger than them was nature. They didn’t consider it reckless. They didn’t think they were an unlucky family, but they believed they took more risks than the average person, whether it’s flying planes or skiing on the black diamonds of downhill. They certainly never thought they were above anything. They were just taught that they could do anything and were willing to try it. —Daniel Pfeffer Flying gave him freedom—maybe if you’re the most sought-after person on the planet, you can find peace by yourself flying an airplane. None of us prob-

ably thought about it as much as we should have. He has the best plane, he has an instructor, what could go wrong? In the early morning hours of July 17, I woke up to the phone ringing. It was Rose. Their plane didn’t land. I kind of knew they were gone but was hoping for a miracle. When I look back now, I see how lucky I was to know them. They set examples for me for kindness, generosity, for what a person should be like. I remember them now by how they lived. —Matt Berman So many memories. When I think of John, I think of how wonderful he was and how he adored Carolyn. And how much everybody loved them both.

For 69 days in 1981 he was Ronald Reagan’s White House press secretary. Then on March 30 a bullet meant for the President struck James Brady’s head. Four people, including Reagan, were shot. But Brady took the worst hit, suffering partial paralysis and brain damage. In a wheelchair and with slurred speech, Brady, along with wife Sarah, became a force for gun control, taking on formidable National Rifle Association opposition to pass the 1993 Brady Act, which required FBI background checks of handgun buyers. (Such a law might have kept the gun from Reagan’s would-be assassin, John Hinckley Jr., later found not guilty by reason of insanity; he had been trying to impress actress Jodie Foster.) By 2009 the law had halted nearly 2 million gun purchases. It remains “the single most important piece of gun safety legislation,” said Matt Bennett, a longtime Brady Campaign adviser. Kibby at court July 29.

Questions abound in the case of Abigail Hernandez, who returned home to North Conway, N.H., on July 20, nine months after she vanished after school on Oct. 9, 2013. Where was she? What happened to her? How did she get back? On July 28 authorities arrested Nathaniel Kibby, 34, of nearby Gorham, N.H., for kidnapping and “knowingly confining Abigail Hernandez. . . with a purpose to commit an offense against her.” But they and Hernandez have revealed little else pending an Aug. 12 court date. Growing up, I could have chosen to go in a negative direction. Being surrounded by positive people—my mom, my grandmother, family members—helped me to fly straight. That’s ultimately what I want to do for kids who come from impoverished areas with Usher’s New Look Foundation. I want to give them a new look on life. If I can make them aware of their options, chances are they are going to do something positive and will share their experiences. When kids first came to my organization, which was called Camp New Look, the idea was for them to learn more about the music industry and dance and sing. Fifteen years later, we far exceeded that. Now we are a full-fledged organization that prepares global leaders. There was this one kid, James Harris, who came to the camp saying, “I just want to rap.” As a result of taking the foundation’s courses and becoming engaged in what we were teaching him, he became a shining star in the organization. He has spoken before Congress. He has spoken in Kenya and in the U.K. He works for me now, motivating kids and corporations to get involved. L

ong before Dr. Kent Brantly put his life at risk caring for patients in the midst of the world’s worst Ebola outbreak, the married father of two had a habit of helping others. At the Southside Church of Christ in Fort Worth, “he and his wife [Amber] coordinated taking meals to church members when they were out of the hospital or had a baby,” says Kent Smith, a church elder. “If anybody needed help on a Saturday, he was available. He’s selfless.” So it actually came as no shock when, a year ago, Brantly, 33, announced to his childhood congregation in India-

napolis that he was moving with his family to Liberia to work as a medical missionary for the Christian aid group Samaritan’s Purse. “God directed my path,” he said in his July 2013 sermon. “My heart leaps with excitement and joy knowing that he has called me.” Says Smith: “He never voiced any fear.” Now, along with fellow aid worker Nancy Writebol, 59, Brantly is fighting for his life after contracting the very virus he had hoped to help others battle. Transported in a self-contained chamber aboard a Gulfstream jet and outfitted in a protective biohazard suit, Brantly was taken to Atlanta’s Emory

HANDLE WITH CARE Virologists wear protective gear to work with deadly microbes.

What You Need to Know About Ebola

1

The virus is fatal in 60 to 90 percent of cases.

2

How did the Americans get it? It’s unclear. Unlike flu, Ebola usually can’t be transmitted through the air or casual contact. The virus is passed through direct contact with an infected person’s bodily fluids—saliva, blood or urine—or exposure to contaminated needles. Investigators are still looking into how the Americans contracted it.

3

Why was Brantly flown to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta? Emory is one of four medical centers in the country with special isolation units. There, Brantly— with Writebol expected to follow—can get the “supportive care” that doctors hope will help their immune systems

4

What risk does bringing the patients to the United States pose to the public? Emory’s Ebola unit is “highly contained” on a separate floor from other patients, Ribner said. Healthcare workers are following Centers for Disease Control protocol for communicable diseases such as wearing full protective gear: masks, gowns, gloves and eye protection. “We don’t think the general population should be worried,” says the CDC’s Dave Daigle.

5

What other steps are officials taking to protect the public? On July 31 the CDC advised against all nonessential travel to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. What is Ebola? Ebola is a severe, often fatal virus first discovered in 1976 near the Ebola River. Flu-like symptoms include high fever, vomiting and diarrhea, often followed by internal and external bleeding (from the eyes, ears and mouth). Due to a recent outbreak in West Africa, the number of reported cases has jumped to 1,603, with 887 deaths, says the World Health Organization.

fight the virus. There is no cure for Ebola, but both patients reportedly improved after being given an experimental serum in Liberia.

cials have taken pains to prevent public panic. “We do not believe any healthcare worker, any patient or visitor to our facility is in any way at risk of acquiring this infection,” Emory infectious disease specialist Dr. Bruce Ribner told reporters on Aug. 1. But across the country, hospitals are on high alert: On Aug. 4 New York City’s Mount Sinai Hospital placed a man who had recently traveled to West Africa in isolation after he came to the emergency room with a fever and stomach problems. (Doctors were awaiting test results at press time.) While the experts have turned to science, Brantly has looked to God. “I’m praying fervently that God will help me survive this disease,” he wrote in a July 28 e-mail to a friend, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. That faith has its roots in his Indianapolis childhood, where the high school soccer player grew up hearing stories from his missionary aunts and uncles and aspired to be like his dad, a physician. “I looked around at my options and decided I needed some tangible skills to use in God’s service,” Brantly said in his sermon. It was on a medical mission to Central America where he met Amber, 30, then a pre-nursing student, with whom he now has kids Ruby, 5, and Stephen, 3. Now Amber and Kent’s family and friends are praying he’ll pull through. “He was in good spirits,” Amber said in an Aug. 3 statement after visiting her husband from behind a protective window at Emory. Brantly got two doses of the experimental serum ZMapp and was steadily improving each day after his arrival. Smith feels certain that Brantly—who insisted the first dose of the experimental serum be given to Writebol in Liberia—is thinking of his stricken friend and the patients left behind. “In the early days after being diagnosed with the virus, he specifically asked us to pray for Nancy and to pray for the other people in West Africa who are fighting this disease,” Smith says. “He cares about other people more than he cares about himself.”

‘Pretty Little Killers’ A NEW BOOK DETAILS HOW TWO HONORS STUDENTS OF THE SELFIE GENERATION TURNED INTO THE COLD-BLOODED SAVAGES WHO STABBED SKYLAR NEESE, THEIR BEST FRIEND, TO DEATH

T

THE TRIO Left to right: Shelia, Rachel and Skylar were in a “toxic” relationship, say the authors.

he headlines were as horrifying as they were unfathomable—high school sophomores Rachel Shoaf and Shelia Eddy, dubbed the “BFF Killers” and “Death Clique,” had been charged in the savage murder of Skylar Neese, the third wheel in an inseparable trio of 16-year-old best friends at University High School in Morgantown, W.Va. Now, with Rachel and Shelia—both honors students at the time of their arrest—in prison, journalist Daleen Berry and investigator Geoffrey Fuller are out with a new book, Pretty Little Killers, excerpted here. Drawing on interviews with police and the girls’ classmates, teachers and relatives, the book gets to the heart of the case’s most haunting question, the same one that Neese pleadingly repeated as she died on a dark rural road on July 6, 2012: Why? SECOND ROW PHOTO: COURTESY NEESE FAMILY

DETERMINED PARENTS Dave and Mary Neese are asking Skylar’s friends to write the parole board. (Rachel could be eligible as early as 2023; Shelia, 2028.) “It will help to make sure they stay in for life,” Mary wrote on Facebook.

some students say she even videoed— what happened next. That is, Rachel and Shelia undressed and began having oral sex. Afterward all three girls slept in Rachel’s bed. Or they tried to. Shelia ordered Skylar to “move over, so I can cuddle with Rachel.” Shelia’s request angered Skylar, who began complaining. A loud and rowdy fight ensued between the two girls. ... According to one investigator who read Skylar’s diary, she said very little about Shelia and Rachel’s having sex and seemed more upset about the fight she and Shelia had afterward. After that sleepover, Skylar’s Twitter feed suggested a girl torn between jealousy over her best friend’s new close“Skylar’s murder reminds us the biggest danger to our children comes from people they know,” write authors Berry and Fuller.

Skylar and Shelia, who had known each other since the second grade, met Rachel in their freshman year at University High. The next thing Skylar knew, wherever she and Shelia were, so was Rachel. This was fine by Skylar, who made friends with everyone. Although Shelia was boy crazy and always on her cell phone, she had connections and could get weed. Despite the three girls’ desire for excitement—or perhaps because of it—their relationship would soon be marked by tension, distrust and one fight after another. During those two years, Skylar either wasn’t bothered by the shifting alliances and two-on-one disputes that can occur between three close friends, or she tolerated the problems for the sake of having fun and partying. It was the worst mistake she ever made. On Aug. 16, 2011, just before they began their sophomore year, the girls had a sleepover at Rachel’s home. Sometime after [Rachel’s mom] Patricia fell asleep, the girls began drinking from the bottle of vodka they had somehow gotten their hands on. Before long all three girls were drunk, which is apparently when they started snapping photos of each other and kissing. For a while now, rumors have floated around that Skylar took pictures—and

ness with Rachel and nostalgia for the fun all three shared. By September, Skylar tweeted what could have been a threat. It is possible the other two girls began to worry that she [intended] to expose their relationship. On Sept. 6 she wrote, “id tell the whole school all the sh-t I have on everyone, which is a lottttt #IfICouldGetAwayWithIt.” Daniel Hovatter, Skylar’s closest male friend, witnessed the trio’s nastiness escalating. Daniel said Shelia called Rachel and then added Skylar in a three-way call. Shelia deliberately didn’t tell Skylar that Rachel was listening with her phone muted. Shelia’s plan was to provoke Skylar so she and Rachel would be treated to some of Skylar’s fireworks. Rachel pushed the speaker button and encouraged Daniel to listen when Shelia and Skylar began screaming. “At first [Rachel] was crying [and saying], ‘I can’t believe they’re fighting like this,’” Daniel said. Then Rachel’s tears quickly turned to laughter as she listened to her two best friends go at it. “Ha, did you hear what she just said?” In October 2011, in a biology class they did not share with Skylar, Shelia and Rachel spoke of plans far more sinister. “Hey, do you know how to dispose of a body?” Shelia asked the student behind her. Nick Tomaski shrugged. “I dunno. That show Breaking Bad has stuff like that on there.” “We want to figure out what to do with Skylar,” Shelia said. Nick just looked at her like she was stupid. “Shhh!” Rachel whispered. “No names.” “What kind of acid would you dispose of a body in?” Shelia asked the biology teacher. By May, Rachel was complaining to another friend that she “can’t stand Skylar” but couldn’t just walk away: “She’ll blackmail us and tell all our secrets if we stop being friends with her.” On June 9 Skylar tweeted ominously, “just know I know.” And on June 10 the other two put their plan

The Coldest of Cover-ups FAKING IT After the murder, Shelia (left) searched doorto-door with the Neeses and posted, “Want my best friend back.” Rachel (center) left for church camp, stonewalling police.

PEER PRESSURE At University High School, classmates accused Shelia and Rachel of hiding something. “Just talk,” one texted Rachel. “It’s easy.”

THE BREAKING POINT Not long after Skylar’s mom pressured the girls on Facebook—“They...have been caught in multiple lies,” she wrote in December 2012—Rachel (far left) confessed.

into action, meeting in the high school parking lot to decide on stabbing as their method. Just after midnight on July 6, they persuaded Skylar to go joyriding and get high with them. Neither Shelia nor Rachel mentioned the real reason they invited her to join them on that midnight drive. Nor did they say a word about the paper towels, bleach, Handi Wipes or clean clothes stashed in the trunk of the car . . . with the shovel Rachel had stolen from her father’s house. Beneath the folds of their hoodies, Shelia and Rachel each carried one of the knives Shelia had brought. The three got out of the car and walked a little ways down the road. Shelia produced the joint, but the lighter she brought didn’t work. Skylar remembered she’d left her lighter in the car. The minute Skylar’s back was turned, Rachel began counting. At the count of three, she and Shelia began stabbing. With each stab wound, they released their pent-up rage and anger—at the people who had wronged them, at the parents who had disappointed them and at the girl who loved them both but whose jealous temper tantrums had made them despise her. Stunned and in pain, Skylar tried at first to run. But she didn’t get very far. Rachel chased and tackled her. Skylar was physically stronger and a natural scrapper, though, and because she knew she was fighting for her life, she managed to grab Rachel’s knife. It was Rachel’s turn to shriek when Skylar left a three-inch gash above her right ankle. Rachel recovered her knife and as they continued stabbing, only one word fell from Skylar’s lips, but she cried it out over and over: “Why?” Rachel and Shelia hid the body beneath nearby brush and, for months, let the world think Skylar had gone missing, even, in Shelia’s case, crying with Skylar’s parents and helping them search. Then, after suffering a breakdown that left her briefly in a psychiatric hospital, Rachel stunned police with a confession on Jan. 3, 2013. Both girls, sentenced as adults, are in West Virginia’s Lakin Correctional Center prison for women. Rachel will be eligible for parole at age 27 and Shelia at age 33.

MY HARD ROAD TO HAPPINESS THE POPULAR TALK SHOW HOST OPENS UP ABOUT OVERCOMING YEARS OF BODY ISSUES, DRUG ABUSE AND PAINFUL LOSS—AND WHY SHE’S FINALLY FEELING FABULOUS AT 50 By JANINE RAYFORD RUBENSTEIN

endy Williams is not one to mince words. Asked how she feels about turning 50 and becoming a card-carrying member of the AARP this year, the daytime talk host makes it plain: “I’ve still got all my teeth, and 90 percent of the time nothing hurts when I wake up in the morning,” she says, seated on the couch beside her kitchen table. “It’s not like the 1930s version of 50. I’ve got a whole other chapter of life to go.” And like most modern women of a certain age, she’s not interested in slowing down. After taping her syndicated talk show that morning in New York City, she raced back to the Livingston, N.J., home she shares with husband Kevin Hunter and their 13-year-old son Kevin Jr. for People’s photo shoot. And once the obligatory gown changes and surprise landscaping issues are handled, Williams takes a moment to reflect. “I feel good,” she says with a nod. “No, I feel like I’m just getting started.” For the wildly successful radio turned TV host, whose Wendy Williams

“People think I’m out all the time looking for [gossip], but I’m a homebody,” says Williams (in her backyard on July 16 and, above, in her living room with husband Kevin and son Kevin Jr. in 2009). “I’m the queen of my castle.” PEOPLE August 18, 2014

Show is syndicated for an audience of nearly 2 million people daily, it’s been a long journey to the top. And though the tough-talking Williams lives what she calls a charmed life now, it wasn’t always that way. She grappled with her body image as a teen, scraped through college, abused drugs in her 20s and struggled to start a family while climbing her way up the professional ladder. “I’ve been through a lot in life,” she says. “But I only stay down for a moment.” When it comes to discussing her childhood, Williams is brutally blunt. “Honestly,” she says, “my life before 21 sucked.” The second of three children raised by Thomas, an English professor, and Shirley, a teacher, in Ocean Township, N.J., “I grew up being fat-shamed by my family,” Williams says bluntly, with a squint and point to Shirley, who’s lounging outside on the patio. “In the ’70s I guess that’s what they called ‘love.’” She and her parents, in town from Florida for her birthday celebration, have since mended their relationship, but Williams isn’t shy about calling them out. “My first diet was in the first grade! When I look back, I was a little fluffy, but I wasn’t fat.”

MISTRESS OF THE MIC “I’m very proud of my radio accomplishments,” says Williams (on the air in 2003). She was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2009.

TV CHARM “I like being on TV,” says Williams (joking with guest Jimmy Fallon on her set in 2009). “Everybody wants to be my friend.”

It’s an experience she says warped her

body image early on. Today Williams stands just shy of 6 ft. tall even without the sky-high heels she favors. But as a little girl, “I knew plastic surgery was something I was going to do,” says Williams, who cops to having had multiple procedures, like liposuction and a breast augmentation, over the years. “Weight was a big thing for me to overcome.” As was adolescence in general. “When Wendy was young, she was very aggressive,” says Shirley. “She spoke her mind and was not afraid of being Wendy.” Adds Williams: “I was always the wild card. In high school I was 80

thinking, ‘I can’t wait to get out of here and set the world on fire!’” Feeling like the odd one out in college as well, Williams discovered her passion at the campus radio station at Boston’s Northeastern University. She also discovered drugs. “I didn’t consider it a problem,” she says of dabbling in cocaine as an undergrad, “mainly because I had no money to fuel the habit.” But after landing a dream gig as a disc jockey on New York City’s WRKS

station in 1989, “I was making $60,000 a year, and at $35 a gram, cocaine was cheap,” says Williams. “I was a young Jersey girl turning the city upside down. I wanted to live on the edge.” Despite heavy cocaine use throughout her 20s, during which time she was briefly married, Williams abruptly got her act together after she began dating Kevin Hunter. “I decided to step back and take an assessment of my life,” she says. “Somehow I hadn’t gotten caught up in

handcuffs or shamed my parents. I had just met this new guy. I said, ‘Count your blessings, Wen. It’s time to stop.’” Williams, who’s now 15 years clean, faced a major challenge when she and Hunter decided to start a family after marrying in 1998. By then in her mid30s, Williams had difficulty carrying a baby to term and suffered two devastating miscarriages, both of which occurred during her second trimester, when most women are told they’re in the safe zone. Discussing what she calls the “hiccup” on their road to having children, Williams grows teary-eyed. “Both were at 5 months. They were full babies,” she says. “Both little girls.” Taking a moment to gather herself, she says, “I do believe in the afterlife, so they’re waiting. In the meantime we have our little Kevin here with us.”

time, a petrified Williams spent nine months on bed rest per doctor’s orders. “I had the contraction meter and my radio equipment set up in my house,” she says. But the stress had a side effect. “I was also eating myself to death,” she says. “I wanted to take my mind off another possible loss. In the end I gained 103 lbs.” But with the delivery of a healthy baby in the summer of 2000, “we got our special gift from God. Now, he’s not perfect,” she says with a laugh, “but he’s a dear, sweet boy.” With motherhood under her belt, Williams decided to get her body back the new-fashioned way. “I had my mommy makeover,” she says of getting a tummy tuck. “It was a kickoff to my new way of life.” And thanks to her having adopted a leaner diet a few years ago, “my stomach’s still as tight as this table,” says Williams, knocking on her granite kitchen stand for good measure. Now, at 50, Williams admits that some things have changed, but for the better. “I’ve had a personality shift,” says the former “lightning rod” who publicly sparred with colleagues and stars like Whitney Houston back in her radio days. But since she landed her daytime talk show in 2009, “it’s different. I’m in millions of homes in 52 countries,” she 84

says. “I’m too smart for that stuff now.” These days she has more important things to focus on, like her health. “I’ll be getting my first-ever colonoscopy this summer,” says Williams, whose grandmother died of colon cancer at 50. “At this age health starts to matter more.” And though she has thyroid disorders (“That’s why I wear wigs,” she says, slipping her current piece off to reveal long but very thin natural hair)—including Graves’ disease, which causes her eyes to protrude—she still feels like she’s in

fighting shape: “I’m 5'11", 165 lbs., and I love my body at this point in my life.” And she’s loving life in general. “I’ve corrected just about everything that bothered the hell out of me in my 20s, 30s and 40s,” she says, reflecting on a tumultuous road and all she has now. “I have to say, this is not how I thought things would turn out. . . . or most parents, their kids’ teenage years signal the end of goodbye kisses and cuddles and the dawn of slammed doors and one-word answers. That’s not the case for Dean Cain. The actor and single dad says he’s confident his bond with his 14-year-old son Christopher isn’t going anywhere. “He’s going to have to fight to stop me from kissing him,” Cain says, tousling his son’s hair during an interview in Beverly Hills. “He’s my favorite person on the whole planet.” With a look that says “Don’t embarrass me, Dad,” the gangly teen fixes his coif and offers a two-word answer: “Yeah, same.” If the pair seem close, it should come as no surprise. Cain, 48, has been raising his son solo since 2011, following a nasty custody battle with his exgirlfriend, former model Samantha Torres. “It was really tough,” says the actor, best known for his role as Superman on the ’90s hit Lois & Clark and now on VH1’s basketball drama Hit the Floor. “Ultimately, we just disagreed on the best way to raise Christopher.” Originally awarded joint custody with Torres in 2003, when his son was just 2, Cain assumed sole custody in 2011, with a judge accepting the couple’s agreement to raise Christopher in one household. “Stability-wise, this is what’s best for him,” says the actor. who later had twins, now 3 years old, with whom she lives in Malibu— declined to comment for this story, Cain says the two are now on better, if still tense, terms. “Christopher sees his mom as much as he wants,” says Cain. “But she’s got her hands full, and he’s got a stable place with me.” The actor is proud of being a fun father figure to his son’s half siblings as well. “Elijah and Isabella are ridiculously beautiful,” he says of Torres’s twins, who spend up to a few days a week with him and call him Uncle Dean. “I’d do anything for those two.” It’s an unconventional setup, perhaps, but the actor is fine with that. “It could be defined as a broken home,” he says, “but if you hang out at our house, that’s the last thing you’ll think. There’s no ‘Don’t play ball in the house.’ We play. We chase each other. You can walk on virtually any piece of furniture. We have fun.” And his “very blended” family has helped Cain stay grounded. “When people asked me where I saw myself in five years, I used to have these grandiose ideas,” he says. “What I’ve learned is to just go with what’s happening now.” When it comes to the pressures of being a single parent, Cain admits it’s not always easy. Running between the set and obligations at Christopher’s school “is difficult,” he says. “But I’ve learned to make the decisions that put him first.” Adds his longtime friend and costar Kristi Swanson: “He’s the kind of dad everybody wishes for. He’s so proud and just madly in love with his child.” For a single guy still looking for “the One,” constant Daddy duty has led to a drastically different lifestyle from his early days in Hollywood. “It’s hard because my friends are all going out,” he says. “The best thing is that I get all

of my time with him. And the hardest thing is that I get all of my time with him,” he adds, laughing. Often one of the only dads at PTA meetings, “I’m very comfortable in a situation where it’s me and six women,” he says with a smirk. When it comes to finding love, “I hope waiting until a certain age to commit will be to my advantage. My standards have changed,” admits Cain, once a player in the Hollywood scene who dated Brooke Shields, Pam Anderson and the late Mindy McCready. “Life is through a much clearer lens now. Whoever I fall for, my son has to sign off. But I’d love

to meet the right person and get married.” Christopher is supportive of that. “All I want,” he says, “is that my dad can enjoy life and just have peace.” When it comes to his son and the topic of girls, “he used to ask me for advice. Now he comes to the Hit the Floor set and spends the whole time talking to the dancers,” says Cain. But it’s his son’s physical maturing that has the dad nervous. “He’s 5 ft., 11 in.,” says Cain, shaking his head. “I’m 6 ft. So by end of summer, it’ll be over for me. I still have him in the muscles category, though.” Cain’s kryptonite these days? “Ask my father, and he’d say women,” Cain says. But Christopher interjects, “Ask Grandma, and she says gambling.” Now it’s Dad’s turn for the “Don’t embarrass me” look. One thing’s certain: “Superman gets his strength from the sun, and I get my strength from my son,” says Cain. “He’s the light of my life.”

RED CARPET GLORY? IT’S HANDLED

If Kerry Washington had to pick one reason to attend this year’s Emmy Awards, it would be to see her friends. “We’re all so busy that a lot of times, these award shows are the only time you get to see people you really adore,” admits the 37-yearold Scandal star, known for turning heads with her impeccable red carpet ensembles. “Like my friend Mindy Kaling—I love her so much, but I feel like the only time we get to hang out is at award shows!” That’s assuming Washington won’t be too busy breaking a record at this month’s ceremony: Should she win an Emmy for playing political fixer Olivia Pope, Washington would be the first African-American ever to take home the gold for Lead Actress in a Drama. “It’s a bit more surreal,” Washington says of her second nomination, “because I can’t believe it’s happened two years in a row. It’s awesome for the show.” It’s also icing on the cake for Washington, who topped off a particularly action-packed season of Scandal by giving birth in April to daughter Isabelle with husband Nnamdi Asomugha. “I know how extraordinary my life is right now and how amazing the opportunities I have are,” says the actress, beaming. “I’m very grateful and feel very, very blessed.” —LYNETTE RICE

Her nod for hosting Betty White’s Off Their Rockers on Lifetime comes 63 years after her first shot at an Emmy as the lead actress in the classic sitcom Life with Elizabeth. “It wasn’t nearly the big schmear that it is now, with all the lights and fashion,” White says of the much smaller ceremony, held at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. “By the next year they had gotten it together as a show.” White now has her seven

1st TIME NOMINEE!

THE ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK STAR, UP FOR LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY, DISHES ON RED CARPET PREP, STYLE AND SNEAKING FOOD INTO THE THEATER

1

Not part of her red carpet prep? A cleanse! Though

her character Piper was a master cleanse fan, “that’s not how I roll. I don’t roll with juice cleanses,” Schilling, 30, says emphatically. “I like to eat chicken. And beans.”

2

Don’t expect her in an orange gown. “Someone

would have the right to throw eggs at me if I wore orange,” she says, breaking Photograph by GAVIN BOND

into a laugh. But aside from that one condition, she is open to ideas. “Here’s the thing: I never feel like I’m in the cool kids club with clothes, so I just put on what I like.”

3

She won’t be hiding her speech in her cleavage.

“Prepping a speech at all sounds like bad juju to me,” says the star. “I’ll just channel my second-grade self.” (She used to practice in the shower!)

4

But she will be bringing food. “I always have

almonds or something like that,” she says. “Last year I sat in the back of the theater and ate them throughout the whole show.”

5

Sorry, guys, she’s got a date lined up. It’s her man-

ager. “These events are overwhelming, and it’s nice to have someone to shepherd you through them.” —MARY GREEN

SUMMER HAIR SPECIAL

« More on Chrissy’s Blonde Hair...

Teigen and colorist Tracey Cunningham were inspired by a childhood photo of the model with blonde hair that her mom, Vilailuck, shared (below). Says Teigen of the transformation: “It was awesome.” And while Teigen swears she’s behind on the latest styles (“I’m just getting into braids,” she reveals), her hairstylist Jen Atkin has a few fresh ideas to complement Teigen’s lighter hair: “I have a catalog in my computer of looks that she likes that I’m going to try. It’s good to mix things up!”

THEY CHOPPED THEIR HAIR! KALEY CUOCOSWEETING Inspired by actress Michelle Williams’s crop, CuocoSweeting cut off about 10 inches of hair and says this pixie brings out her “inner Peter Pan.”

How cute is little Chrissy?

‘When it comes to her style, Chrissy is fearless, so it’s fun for me as a hairstylist because she’s always open to trying new things—and she can pull them off so well’ —JEN ATKIN, HAIRSTYLIST

Megan Fox

The actress, 28, stars as a fearless reporter in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Last time I was starstruck With Russell Westbrook [of the Oklahoma City Thunder] at the Kids’ Choice Awards. Kobe [Bryant] was there, but I didn’t get a chance to see him. That would have been a double whammy.

Last home improvement That I did personally? Never. But if we want to go with my husband, Brian [Austin Green], he just rewired the stereo equipment. He would prefer to do it all himself. He tried to paint our house, and I’m like, “Please, can we just hire someone?”

Last meal I prepared Does scrambled eggs count? I really love cooking for the holidays, and I always try and do something challenging. But on a day-to-day basis, it’s not my thing.

Last workout I just went to the gym with my trainer, and he killed me. I’ve changed my diet and cut out bread completely. I only work out twice a week but for close to two hours.
