Think And Grow Rich Napoleon Hill

Who is Napoleon Hill? This philosopher of success was born in 1883 in Virginia, and was an orphan at age twelve. By thirteen years of age, he was writing for a newspaper to support his desolate lifestyle. Living in extreme poverty, Hill became obsessed with failure, success and happiness. When “Think and Grow Rich” was first published in 1937, it was a successful and popular inspirational book, allowing Hill to enjoy the success that he was studious to discover for himself as well as anyone else willing to do the work. Hill worked alongside mogul Andrew Carnegie where he was introduced to the ideas he used to develop this book. By interviewing more than 500 successful businessmen including Henry Ford and Thomas Edison, Hill systematically analyzed their responses to discover the keys to success that were so beneficial to these men and can be transmuted to the success of future generations in the capitalistic world. The common factor of these men and their success started with thoughts, ideas and organized plans. Also, money and material things are essential for freedom of body and mind, but these things are not what make people happy. Lasting friendships, harmony in

family relations, sympathy and understanding brings a peace of mind that can only be related to spiritual values as they are beyond any earthly treasure that one may want. “Think and Grow Rich” gives the reader a philosophy for daily living that is to be transmitted into material wealth or a peace of mind, introducing harmony in order to master physical shortcomings that are preventing success. By providing a scientific analysis of one’s personality and character, Hill has broken down the positive and negative influences that shape the success or failure of every single individual. Two Steps to Success The key to accepting and internalizing the philosophy from this book in order to become rich and successful involves two parts. First of all, the reader must be open and receptive of change, having a readiness to gain riches. We must be tolerant and open-minded at all times and have the correct state of mind if we really want to get rich. “No one is ready for a thing until he believes he can acquire it,” and we must be prepared at all costs for upcoming opportunities for success. This first part steadies the mind in order to understand the second part that is to make a plan backed with fervent desire to come true. The steps for doing this successfully are laid out in great detail for the rest of this book.

Thoughts are things that when mixed with purpose, persistence and a burning desire will become reality. When someone makes a drastic life-altering decision that is beyond the grasp of normal minds, they will succeed no matter what as long as they have a rampant and fierce desire to succeed. These moments often come following a defeat or misfortune that can be seen as life changing, such as losing one’s job, home or family. The difference between success and failure in these situations is that most people only see the negative and are not opportunistic. Instead of finding a new path or direction, they hold on to the failure and impending doom in their life. This is what separates the weak from the strong in business and relationships. Only those who can take a defeat and turn it into a success will ever become rich. The key is to know what you want and have the determination to stand by that desire and decision no matter how outlandish or unrealistic for other people, until you realize it into a reality. True “bulldog” determination is required once a clear purpose and plan is established that is leading to success. Initiative, faith and the willpower to succeed are the three main components to becoming rich. Then as one becomes successful, riches will come so rapidly and in terrific abundance you will kick yourself for waiting so long in poor conditions. Riches begin with a state

of mind, definite purpose and little or no hard work. Nothing is impossible for someone who is success conscious. Two Weaknesses Preventing Riches The first weakness that will prevent success is the fear of failing at something. Failure is the result of giving up and quitting some plan or purpose. Learn from your mistakes because before success we will definitely experience failures and make errors. This is what makes or breaks us in the race for riches. The other weakness is using our past impressions and beliefs to constitute our future. Poverty, want, misery, failure and defeat are character flaws that cause us to refuse to believe what we cannot understand or are different from what we already know. This is what holds us back from becoming successful and rich - the tradition of failure. Hill describes 13 steps to gain riches: The First Step: Desire Desire is the knowing of what you want and need to become rich. We have the power to control our thoughts that travel via the ether in the form of energy and vibrations. This power does not choose between good or bad; both types of energy are constantly in the ether and influencing our minds. Our brains become magnets toward either positive or negative

energy and attract naturally who and what will advance our thoughts. To get rich we must magnetize our mind with intense desire for riches. We must make the decision to not turn back or change our plan once we start down the path. The plan must be clear and well defined, and we must be certain of our ultimate goal. This plan must include a purpose that is serving the good of humanity in order to achieve the greatest personal success and riches. Tolerance and an open mind are necessary as is the ability to dream big. Think of Jesus, Christopher Columbus, and Abraham Lincoln. These men took a dream of a greater good for the whole world and even through fear of persecution and death they stood fast to their ultimate goal. Everyone that became rich and successful faced countless struggles and opposition. Thomas Edison tried over a thousand times to invent the light bulb; imagine if he had given up! John Bunyan and O’ Henry were both imprisoned before succeeding but they used their experience to fuel their desire to succeed. 6 Steps to Fulfilling the Desire of Gaining Riches 1.

Decide exactly how much money you desire

2.

Determine what you will give in return since you

cannot receive something for nothing 3.

Establish an exact date you will have the desired

amount of money

4.

Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire;

begin at once, ready or not, to put your plan in action 5.

Write out this plan: amount, date, return, and detail

the plan as specific as possible 6.

Read your written statement twice a day: when you

first wake up and before going to sleep as you envision yourself already in possession of the money The Second Step: Faith Faith

subconsciously, developing a spiritual connection to the Infinite Intelligence that allows everyone to be rich. Emotions, such as faith, love and sex, are the most powerful stimuli to make a spiritual connection. Faith can be induced by autosuggestion to the subconscious by convincing it in your mind that you will receive what you ask for with desire. Faith is developed voluntarily by repetition of affirmation of directions and orders to the subconscious. The emotions behind thoughts give them life, vigor and action. For instance, bad luck comes from negative thoughts and beliefs of poverty and failure. You must already think positive thoughts and believe that you are already in possession of what you want in order for it to come into fruition. Have faith in yourself, an extension of the Infinite Intelligence, because faith gives life, power and action to our

thoughts. Believe in yourself and have faith that you are going to reap the riches of success, as you are already rich from the inside just by understanding how this operates. Be cautious of your dominating thoughts as they make you who you are to the public. A thought mixed with emotion creates a magnet to attract like forces through the ether. Lack of Self-Confidence The greatest weakness experienced by so many people is the lack of self-confidence. Hill gives a formula for developing self-confidence: 1.

Be persistent in your action toward achieving a

definite purpose 2.

Since your dominating thoughts will become your

new reality, concentrate for at least 30 minutes a day on a clear mental image of who you desire to become 3.

Use autosuggestion to change your attitude by taking

10 minutes a day to tell yourself you are self-confident 4.

Write down a definite goal and never quit until you

achieve the self-confidence you need to accomplish the goal 5.

Every decision must be based on truth, justice and

serve all of humanity in a positive way in order to gain

true riches, and by doing so, it will become natural to entice others to help you as you accomplish this task Take this formula, memorize it, and repeat it at least once per day with full faith in yourself to influence your thoughts and actions. Faith in the form of love is the most powerful emotion. Any great leader was successful following love of some fashion in their lives. The basis of Christianity is faith and Jesus’ miracles were a direct result of faith. Replace force and fear with faith and cooperation. And remember, we must give before we can receive in anything we do. The Third Step: Autosuggestion All suggestions that we have in life come through the five senses to stimulate the mind resulting in a bridge between the conscious and subconscious for thoughts to cross. Once thoughts enter the subconscious they begin to take on a life of their own leading the person into places and encounters that will bring the initial thought into reality. Exercise control over what goes into the subconscious and use autosuggestion to send particular thoughts into the subconscious so you can fulfill your burning desire. Keep in mind that you must have faith and emotion behind the autosuggestion or it will be in vain. Concentrate on your desire until you become obsessed and see

every opportunity as a path to success in the fulfillment of your desire. If you desire money, picture yourself already in possession of the material wealth, and over time the plan on how to gain this money will come to you in some sort of inspirational “hunch.” The Fourth Step: Knowledge, Experience and Observation Anyone who has graduated from college or university has plenty of knowledge, but without the application of this information it is useless. The power comes from learning how to organize and direct the knowledge. A true education grants the student the ability to learn and find out what he or she needs in order to create and achieve a plan of action. To use desire to get rich you will need specialized knowledge of the service or work you will be offering in exchange for the reward, but you have the resources from other minds to draw from if there are areas that you are not specialized in. Every President and leader has a board or group of thinking men and women who are experts specializing in particular areas, and this concept is necessary for success and riches. There are five sources of knowledge: 1.

One’s own experience and education

2.

Groups of thinking people

5.

Special training

A lack of ambition is the excuse when someone says they do not have the knowledge, because it is always available somewhere. “The way of success is the way of continuous pursuit of knowledge.” We have the capacity to learn new things until the moment we are dead. Refuse to compromise with life by accepting it and keeping a job or situation that you do not want, or fail to satisfy the urge for success and riches. We rise or fail because of conditions that we control, but most people underestimate this power we each have over self. Knowledge, as well as ideas, requires imagination fueled by emotion. In order to think creatively we must use our imagination to think outside the box if we wish to achieve something that is considered “unthinkable” or “unimaginable.” The Fifth Step: Imagination Imagination is the place where all great plans are created, and our only limits are those in the development and use of this creative energy. There are two forms of imagination: 1.

Synthetic

2.

Creative

education, knowledge or observation to create a new idea, limiting the thinker to traditions and intolerance of openmindedness. Creative imagination is the true form that allows direct communication with the Infinite Intelligence to grant us hunches and inspirations. This is the place where thought vibrations are received and sent, and this power form of imagination can only be utilized when the conscious is vibrating at a rapid rate, such as during the stimulation of a strong desire. This is important: “The creative faculty becomes more alert, more receptive to vibrations from the sources mentioned, in proportion to its development through USE.” The creative imagination gains ability as well as loses power depending on how often it is exercised just as with any muscle in our body. Getting rich is never the result of hard work and manual labor for those who receive large sums at a quick pace. The greatest riches come in response to definite demands based on these principles, but never on luck. The science behind gaining riches can be taken into account by anyone, and luck is based on chance meaning the lucky will

one day become the unlucky no matter how they play the game. The Sixth Step: Organized Planning Turning desire into action requires organized planning. The instructions for building a plan must be practical. First, form an alliance, a “think tank,” of other people you need for creation and action to carry out the plan. This is extremely important in following through with your plans for making money. The alliance of people will be able to provide brainstorming of imaginative ideas, specialized knowledge and personal experiences, as well as the creation of a “third” mind that will be discussed later on.

Second, before you form the

alliance decide what advantages and benefits you can offer and provide for each member in return for their efforts, keeping in mind this does not have to be material wealth. Fame and recognition are powerful bargaining tools, even more so than money in terms of true dedication to the plan. Third and final, maintain perfect harmony and accord within the group. Keep in mind you are doing something of major importance to you and therefore you require a faultless plan. You must have the advantages of experience, education, innate ability and the imagination of other people’s minds. These “master minds” are what will make the group the best it can be, in order to

complete your plan to the fullest ability and to fulfill your obsessive desire to provide some great service to humanity. As you continue with your plan and make adjustments, everyone in the group must be part of any alterations and must approve the changes. This is important, as the plan will continue to evolve bringing into account new information and needs as the ultimate goal is brought to life. The plans must be practical and workable. Remember, temporary defeat means that the plan is somehow flawed, and this requires adjustment, but does not mean the goal is unsuccessful. Realize that money is not required to make money. Desire is what brings about money, so if you have no material wealth as you begin your plans this will not inhibit the impending and definite success of getting rich. Attributes of Leadership Everyone that is working in some capacity with other people in selling services needs to know how to market themselves. Below is a list of attributes of leadership that are mandatory in making a successful leader. 1.

Unwavering courage and self-confidence

2.

Self-control is required in order to control others as a leader

3.

A keen sense of justice for all humanity

4.

Definiteness of decision

5.

Definiteness of plans

6.

Habit of doing more than what you are paid for

7.

Pleasing personality

8.

Sympathy and understanding of followers’ problems and issues

9. 10.

Mastery of detail Willingness to assume full responsibility of others’ mistakes

11. Cooperation by applying the principle of cooperative effort in working as a team There are two forms of leadership: consent or force. Leadership by consent is the most effective as it uses sympathy to lead others to get them to do what you need. Major causes of failure in leadership include: 1.

Inability to organize details - must be able to master and delegate details

2.

Unwillingness to render humble service; “the greatest among ye shall be the servant of all”

3.

Expecting to get paid the value of your knowledge rather than what you are actually doing

4.

Fear of competition from followers - to be afraid to delegate work because you are afraid you will lose your position is a cause of failure; in fact, men receive more money for their ability to get other people to do the action and an efficient leader knows this and takes his knowledge and personal magnetism to increase workers’ efficiency and to get them to provide better service

5.

Lack of imagination - without imagination leaders are unable to face adverse conditions and create new plans to succeed

6.

Selfishness - any leader who wants all the credit will soon face resentment; a truly great leader claims none of the glory

7.

Intemperance - abuse of alcohol or narcotics or sex destroys endurance and vitality

8.

Disloyalty

9.

Emphasis of authority - use of fear or force to lead

10. Emphasis of title - no one likes someone who thinks they are better or more deserving than themselves, and this is unnecessary for someone who is a true leader “Think and Grow Rich” also provides 30 major causes of failure that should be taken into account, but by focusing on how to improve one’s leadership skills and character, a true

leader will have no need to recognize failure because it will not be a problem. The author gives a checklist that should be answered annually to discover exactly what character flaws and weaknesses we have as individuals. Once we are able to ascertain these problem areas we can make a positive effort to change them. The goal is to increase our virtues while decreasing our faults from within our mind. In order to become rich we must be constantly moving forward with constructive thoughts. Capital and Capitalism Americans have unlimited freedoms including opportunity, thought and deed; food, shelter and clothing; property rights and government-backed banks and services. All of this is available because of capital, not only in the form of finance but through groups of people who are using this money to efficiently serve the public (i.e. scientists, chemists, inventors, transportation experts, etc.). The capitalists are the brains because they supply the network in which human progress allows people to live in the independent manner that they do in the U.S. and other capitalist societies. This is how we have access to institutions and organizations backed by charity and great ideas, including colleges, libraries, newspapers, roadways and hospitals. Capitalism results from imagination, faith,

for

civilization, as we know it in the United States. This is important for the following reasons: 1.

Anyone that wants to get rich must learn to adapt to

this system as it controls all riches 2.

Organized capital is not poison and is required to

gain riches Start with desire and by persistence, capitalism will ensure you the path to riches proportional to the value of the services you are giving in return. The Seventh Step: Procrastination Make decisions promptly and take change as slow as possible. Learn to talk less and listen more often in order to see all that is happening. Be courageous as all great decisions that have served mankind have taken great courage, a definite decision to act and organized planning. But make certain to do it. The action is most important once the thought and desire has been established in your subconscious. Procrastinating prolongs the inevitable, and if you wish to get rich, why wait? Just do it, whether you feel you are prepared or not, and the path will become enlightened for you to succeed. The Eighth Step: Persistence

Weak desire brings weak results. You cannot give up at the first sign of resistance or opposition. Remember every great success has been met with thousands of failures along the way. Use autosuggestion and the subconscious mind until the plan becomes a habit. Form a clear picture of what success means

your

subconscious will work constantly, even when your body is sleeping, to achieve this goal. With persistence, success will follow through action. Take the punishment of defeat as an urge to increase your effort and push through the misfortune to find the positive side. There are eight causes of persistence: 1.

Definiteness of purpose - strong motive

2.

Desire

3.

Self-reliance - autosuggestion can help to achieve

this 4.

Definiteness of organized plans

5.

Accurate knowledge - guessing only destroys

persistence 6.

Cooperation - sympathy, understanding and harmony

The four steps to gaining persistence are: 1.

A definite purpose backed by a burning desire to

fulfill it 2.

A definite plan expressed in continuous action

3.

A mind closed tightly against negatives and

discouraging influences and suggestions 4.

Friendly alliance with one or more willing to

encourage each other to go through with the plan The Ninth Step: Power of the Master Mind Power is required for making money because it is the action that makes plans happen. The Master Mind is our group of thinking people who are working with us in order to take our plan into fruition. Sources of organized power for the Master Mind do not have to be only people who are physically present and can include the following: 1.

Infinite Intelligence - uses creative imagination

2.

Accumulated experience - public libraries, schools

and colleges 3.

Experiment and research - can take the place of

accumulated experience through real life experiences

The Master Mind is a coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony between at least two people, for the attainment of a definite purpose. This is mandatory for acquiring great power by using psychic power to transmute the desire for money into a reality. The Tenth Step: Sex Transmutation Transmuting is changing or the transfer of energy from one person to another. The emotion of sex is the most powerful energy that we can harness. Instead of using our sexual organs to satisfy our sexual urges and desires, we can reroute this energy to be used for fulfilling our plan. There are three constructive potentials of sex: 1.

Perpetuation of mankind

2.

Maintenance of health (therapeutic)

3.

Transformation of mediocrity and genius through

transmuting Sexual desire is innate and natural and should not be scorned, eliminated or made taboo. This form of emotion is how creative forces and willpower come into being. Personal magnetism is a form of sex expression, and this energy can be shared via handshake, tone of voice (musical and charming), posture and carriage of one’s body (with grace and ease),

vibrations of thought (mix the emotion of sex with thought to influence others), and bodily adornment (take care of physical appearance). 10 Mind Stimuli There are ten stimuli that can cause the vibrations of thought

Infinite Intelligence

2.

Subconscious

3.

Mind of someone else who released a thought, idea.

4.

From other’s subconscious

When the brain is stimulated from one of these stimuli the mind vibrates at a high rate of speed allowing it to reach a higher level of consciousness where we can discover new ideas that are unreachable by conventional thinking. The method in which to use these stimuli effectively is: 1.

Stimulate the mind to vibrate on a higher plane using

one of the ten stimuli 2.

Concentrate on what you know about the idea that is

involved with your plan, and hold this in your mind until the subconscious takes over. The answer or solution will flash into your mind. Results will depend on your level of creative faculty. The Eleventh Step: Subconscious Mind You have the ability to voluntarily plant any seed of thought, plan or purpose within your subconscious that you wish to translate into money or desire. Only by habit, however, will the subconscious work voluntarily. There are seven positive

emotions - desire, faith, love, sex, enthusiasm, romance and hope - that should be focused on in order to achieve success through the subconscious. Avoid fear, jealousy, hatred, revenge, greed, superstition and anger, as these negative emotions will become habit, resulting in sure failure. The Twelfth Step: The Brain and Thought Transmission Through the ether we can receive and send vibrations of thought. Start with a desire and use autosuggestion, the subconscious mind and creative imagination to broadcast your thoughts. The Thirteenth Step: The Sixth Sense Where the subconscious lets the Infinite Intelligence communicate is in the sixth sense. This sense is only reachable by meditation from within the mind. With the sixth sense you are warned of impending dangers to avoid and opportunities to embrace on the path to achieving your goal. Indecision, doubt and fear keep the sixth sense from functioning. The six “ghosts” of fear that creep into many minds blocking access to the sixth sense are: 1.

Poverty

2.

Criticism/judgment of others

Fears are only a state of mind, and these must be removed from our subconscious in order to become rich. We each have the ability to control what comes into our minds, but most people do not accept this fact. To become successful, you must find a peace of mind, acquire the material needs of life and attain happiness. Stop making excuses and alibis for why you are not rich or successful, and use your willpower to turn these thoughts around. Then you will become rich, powerful, and successful - anything that you truly desire will come true. You will become rich if that is what you truly want in life. Is this Program for Me? This book is widely regarded as the greatest self help book of all time - a success bible if you wish, and with very good reason. It allows you to emulate and model your life on the successful mindset and habits of 500 of the wealthiest people of that time. These lessons still apply today and always will. While this book is aimed at people looking to get rich, in

reality the principles and lessons can be applied in any area of your life. This book goes into detail about the attributes of leaders and anyone can truly benefit from learning how a leader becomes successful. The tools and characteristics that are listed in this book can be of great impact when taken into account by someone who wants to lead others, and everyone who has seen a great leader fall from glory can recognize the failures from the lists provided in this book. Any person who wishes to make a large-scale change in their life, through receiving great riches, will be most benefited from reading this book. By teaching people how to apply their strengths and remove their weaknesses, anyone who wants to serve humanity and better themselves can learn a great deal from Hill. The final verdict is that this book is way too important for everyone to not read it. Even if you have no specific desire for wealth it will still help you attain success in other areas of your life if you have the courage to take action. Fears of all sorts creep into our psyche and for some reason we continue to live a nonchalant life unfulfilling and boring, led by other great men whom we wish to be like but lack something in order to do so. This book gives us the framework to make that great idea we have into a definite plan, as well as providing us with the knowledge and tools to change our character to become the type of person who is most likely to succeed once we are on the path to success. Hill deciphers all the specific details of the men he interviewed to find out what they had in common, and to show how common success can be if only we see our potential.

The Master Key System Charles Haanel Everyone has the ability to produce thought, and thought can produce success Charles Haanel was a noted American New Thought author, as well as, an impressive businessman as president of the Mexico Gold and Silver Mining Company. The American New Thought movement is a spiritual idea that emphasizes metaphysical beliefs. Published in 1912, when Haanel was 46, “The Master Key System” (MKS) uses a metaphysical approach to becoming successful in one's life. To give a broad description of this school of philosophy, one's success or failure depends on how their body physically responds to a thought via the Mind, and this reaction, whether positive or negative, is expressed through words, or language, resulting in the set of a chain of events that end in some degree of change in the lives of all of the persons involved along the way. The MKS is a self-improvement course or “working book” that takes the reader through a series of mental workout sessions designed to apply the knowledge of ultimate happiness and harmony as provided by Haanel. The book is

designed in 24 chapters, with each chapter set up with numbered points using beautiful language, if a bit verbose at times, a set of corresponding review questions that simplify all of the information, and ending with a thinking exercise that applies the new information so that it becomes effective. Each of the twenty-four thinking exercises are not too strenuous or time consuming, and in fact, the mental practices are pretty similar to meditative or other visualizing exercises. . In the MKS, the premise is that everyone who can think for themselves has the power to change their lives, and in fact, whether we realize it or not, our thoughts evolve into each and every human experience that takes place in our daily lives. More importantly, according to how we think, our future can remain fate or fulfill destiny. This book gives the background to this approach and using a metaphysical perspective, explains everything from how our thoughts control the cells in our body to helping other people by sending positive thoughts to provide service or strength. Our conscious and subconscious operate and direct our mind; the conscious represents objectively the 'without' environment, and the subconscious expresses the subjective of our emotions and thoughts. The subconscious needs to be

under constant guard by the conscious because of its vulnerability. However, the subconscious is not as immature as it may seem, and in fact, the MKS says that when we tell our subconscious directly what we want to achieve, good or bad, this will put the action into place within our mind. This is how to achieve success. Remember, though, any thought 'order' can be placed with the subconscious; it is up to us to make sure that the thought, or cause, results in a positive action, or effect. This is the pathway to success. Success can mean a whole multitude of things. Three fundamental ideas of success are: 1.

Wealth

2.

Health

3.

Power Some people think of success in terms of control and

influence over others. Some see success as predetermined, a result of environmental influences, such as the children of rich families grow up to be rich themselves, which is definitely not always the case. However, according to the MKS, all of these successful people are on the same mental frequency as those people who fail miserably at everything they lay their hands on. Everyone is communicating on the Universal which is what all

humans have in common, like traits or qualities, and in this case, the Universal is thought and mind. So, everyone has the ability to think themselves to success just the same as anybody, as long as we realize we have that potential. It is important to note here that the subconscious works on a very rigid path and once the path is set, it is very hard to break the cycle and change to a different path, something I think everyone who has ever tried to lose weight or quit smoking can recognize. Now, the difference between the rich and famous, and the rest of us, is that the rich and famous have subconsciously put in their mind a visual image of the result of their success, and they have a constant desire that they concentrate on to become rich and famous. The key to staying on the successful path, and not having any problems along the way, is to make sure that the goals of success are morally acceptable. Here is going to be the kicker with many people. The religious connection to the MKS starts with the agreement that humans are morally responsible for their actions and should make decisions with positive outcomes rather than spread ill will. Most people would agree with this conjuncture, but the next idea creates havoc with most

religious ideals. The MKS believes that we control our destiny and have control over our own thoughts. This theory goes against most fundamental organized religious ideas of a supernatural leader (God) who is in ultimate control over our lives. In fact, all humans are operating on the Universal Mind, or line of thought that is directly connected with the Omnipotent force that is relatively God, and by practice we can all be used by this force to spread good will. The main goal of being successful cannot be selfish, greedy, evil or malicious in any way, or our biggest success is sure to become our biggest failure. As we become successful in wealth, power and health, we have the moral responsibility to share this success by serving other people. As we are granted power, we are to use that power to produce benevolent effects, spreading the good will throughout the Universal. Think charity work, donating money to causes, volunteering time to the elderly. When this power is used selfishly or to harm others in anyway, the Law of Attraction states that the malicious thought sets into place a string of bad luck, so to speak. An example of this is when someone tells a 'little white lie' and this turns into a series of more lies to keep the first one a secret, and the effect snowballs until the guilty party is exposed, by the Law of Nature.

Harness the energy of molecules to the Mind “Thinking is the only activity which the spirit possesses, and thought is the only product of thinking” states Haanel. Control your thoughts, and only focus on positive constructive thoughts. The way to control your thoughts is through intense concentration and total attention to detail. Each of the exercises practice concentration techniques in order to control which thoughts can come into the mind. Then, by choosing the thoughts that are in coordination with our ultimate goals of success and focusing on the outcomes of these thoughts, we can control our destiny. Here, the MKS goes into great detail about the application of cause and effect to every human experience and how the cause is always the result of a thought. The MKS describes cause and effect as every thought is a cause and each condition is the effect. Humans have a “within” and a “without,” whereas the Mind operates for the within, and the without is outside influences and environment - this means that in order to control what is going on in the “without”, we must first control what is taking place in the world “within.” The MKS goes on to explain that the reason people have difficulties in life is because of the influx of all kinds of ideas that scramble around in our mind lost and unorganized, and the “ignorance of our

true interests. The great task is to discover the laws of nature to which we are to adjust ourselves.” In other words, we are suppose to discover what is our true calling in life, and we are expected to make the conscious effort to stay on the true path without straying for cheapened success from motives such as greediness, envy, jealousy, or anger. Instead of wondering how we are ever going to get rich and complaining because we never can afford anything, we should be constructive in our thought. We should not waste time complaining because it is a waste of time and does no good. Instead we need to think of ways to help others. This is because the MKS teaches us that the only way to have power is to give power in order to get it back tenfold. The MKS goes on to discuss the importance of “I” in our psyche, and the influence we have when we say “I am going to...” and fail to complete this. We should always complete a project or task once we take it on, and we should never quit if at all avoidable because this ruins our self-esteem. When we can continue things without failing, we will have learned self control, and this is the world within ourselves. This is the world that we have control over and must use to gain power. The power to succeed in our outer, or worldly lives, depends solely on the success of our inner world, the world

within our mind. And when our inner world is unsuccessful, or unhappy, this manifests in our illnesses and diseases. The MKS describes all medical conditions as being a direct result of our thoughts, and that all diseases and illnesses can thereby be cured or reversed by the power of our mind. In other words, we can think ourselves healthy. The person must concentrate on being healthy, however, rather than on being sick. This is a result of the Law of Attraction, which states that loss leads to greater loss, so that if someone dwells on the disease and loss of health and happiness, he or she will only suffer from more disease and sadness. However, if the person resists all negative thoughts about the condition and ignores it completely, the healthy thoughts can reprogram the cells of the body and kill off the disease. Some negative programs disdained by Haanel that are related to mind and thought are telepathy, hypnotism and seekers of phenomena or paranormal activity. Telepathy is viewed as a negative mental state that produces harmful thought interference. Anyone who tries to control another person's thoughts loses control over his own mind power. Hypnotism can also be more dangerous than good, because the operator as well as the participant is losing their mental power to the other person. Phenomena seekers, people looking for

paranormal activity and those who perform seances are all looking for the wrong kind of power, as in black magic, and this opens up the world of negative attention that is beyond the knowledge or necessity of a single person, and should be left well alone. Is this Program for ME? Anyone should read this book if they are open minded enough to believe that they are in control of their destiny, and that it is not predetermined by a supernatural force. The basic premise of success using the Master Key System starts with positive thinking on behalf of the individual. The three main effects of success - wealth, health and power - are all goals that most everyone wants to achieve in their lifetime. The MKS gives the tools and knowledge to make a success out of anyone who follows the rules, and the only basic requirement is the use of one's mind. However, fair warning to anybody who believes that they can achieve success prematurely, without following the moral guidelines and societal expectations as stated in the MKS, and with ill will or unholy intentions. Haanel states that anyone can use this program if they have a mind to think, but if they have bad thoughts or evil ways then they will fail miserably. This may seem like a thoughtful, easy-to-follow program, but the MKS requires lots of hard work and dedication.

Before starting this program, the participant should be aware that this program can change their lives in very dramatic ways, and to proceed with serious intentions. Anyone who suffers from anxiety or nervousness due to stresses that are out of their control will learn through the MKS that we are not expected to control the outer stresses, and that through selfcontrol, people are no longer anxious or nerve-ridden. In today's economy, with unemployment through the roof, workers should try this program in an effort to restructure their lives to produce success rather than failure. The Master Key System is a unique perspective of self-improvement that provides the tools within the person. Anyone with any sense could have the opportunity for changing themselves for the better. All that is required is their undivided attention through the completion of this program. The more work that is put in, the greater the reward that will be reaped. Sum of it All Three Step Process to Success: 1.

Idealization - What is the constructive idea? When an

idea comes to mind, consider it thoroughly before making the decision to put the idea into motion. Make sure that you feel completely positive and happy about the idea. You don't want

COPYRIGHT © 2011 MYSUCCESSSEMINARS.COM

P a g e | 40

to choose a successful idea that only turns into a greedy or superficial selfish dream. That will only bring you great misery and failure. 2.

Visualization - After turning a thought into an intention,

visualize the entire idea to every last detail. Make a grand visualization; create it even more magnificent than you could ever imagine. Don't cut yourself short here. The greater the expectation, the greater the room for success. Make sure you picture as much detail as possible so as to leave little to the imagination later; if you leave some of the idea undeveloped in the beginning, later when the process is in full steam and problems develop because the idea was not fully visualized, you may find yourself in trouble with making rash decisions on the fly. This is important because of the next step: 3.

Materialization - The idea that is visualized and given

complete attention through steady concentration will materialize. The MKS discusses in great detail how this is possible, but in short, the thought is placed within the cells of our body, and quietly and steadily, those cells will work mechanically to put in motion the action to bring the idea to fruition. That is why it is so important to completely visualize the idea, making sure all aspects are developed mentally and that we are certain about an idea before we put it into action.

The Art And Science of Personal Magnetism Theron Q. Durmont aka William Walker Atkinson Following a complete nervous and mental breakdown, W.W. Atkinson started healing with the New Thought Movement (NTM). An avid author, as well as being a part of the NTM, he wrote about the practices of yoga and was a fervent student of Hinduism. He wrote under several aliases throughout his life, and “The Art and Science of Personal Magnetism” was written by Theron Q. Durmont. This book is written to explain the ideals and real life application of personal magnetism. Often called a specialized subject of telepathy or mind control, personal magnetism presents the opportunity to discover one's potential and make full use of it to serve and lift up humanity. Personal Magnetism Personal magnetism is the act of using mental powers to send messages to others in an attempt to influence or even control their minds. Anyone can use this power as we all have it; however, most people are skeptical that such a force really exists. Personal atmosphere is the surrounding environment,

or aura, of a person that contains their magnetism. For instance, whenever someone famous or of great importance enters a room, everyone feels an attraction and the power of that person, and this is their personal magnetism. Most people have weak magnetism and unfavorable traits, and unfortunately, this level of magnetism is unhealthy as others have an ability to project their power over you. Telepathy, thought transference and mind control are all activities that take place within the realm of personal magnetism. Scientifically, the process of magnetism can be seen as electric radiation, as you have seen doctors who analyze brain activity on patients watch as parts of the brain light up with stimulation. This is a very real occurrence that takes place every time we make a thought. Durmont says that this radioactivity is in everything that has life. Mental and Nerve Force Mental force is centralized in the brain, while nerve force is located in the solar and sacral plexuses - the physical and mental forces of our body - between our stomach and spine and our hips, respectively. The way that this nerve force is capable of extending outside of our body and into another person or life form is by traveling through the universal ether

that was theorized in physics by Albert Einstein and his world wide theory regarding relatively in “Ether and the Theory of Relativity.” Ether is theorized and proven using the scientific method to be the channel in which thoughts travel through mental space and are formed in matter. The mental phase of the act of creating personal magnetism has two parts. First, a person holds the mental state in one concentrated and clear thought, charging it with vibrations. Second, the person uses conscious projection of mental current from brain by action of will, sending out thoughts to another person. The main point of “The Art and Science of Personal Magnetism” is to learn how to cultivate the right mental states that correspond with attracting certain people with your personal magnetism. The right mental states are necessary if we expect to achieve the opportunities to provide service to other people. Breathing and Meditation In order to increase personal magnetism, you should maintain a steady purposeful breathing that is normal but rhythmic in any situation. For instance, when you find yourself in a stressful event, some people will nearly forget to breathe altogether and soon become light headed and weak. If you can

maintain a steady breathing pattern this will not only help keep you from fainting under pressure, but also increase your personal magnetism so that soon you won't even be aware of any negative social pressure at all. You will gain control of the situation and of yourself. Breathing is important in building personal magnetism within oneself, and meditation is a wonderful way to improve breathing. Through daily meditation you will gain the control over your breathing so that the use of breathing techniques will be second nature. On a daily basis, practicing breathing exercises in stressful situations will help you regain your composure. The book goes into detail about the scientific research to prove the glorious benefits of controlled breathing showing how the body functions, as well as the correct way to identify the breathing pattern that is specific for an individual. In essence, by identifying your breathing pattern that you use for recuperating from a stressful situation, you are making conscious the breathing rhythm that is necessary for gaining personal magnetism. Confused? Think about when you are catching your breath after a short sprint across a parking lot after a child that has darted in front of a car. You breathe deep, with purpose and control in order to maintain your composure. Well this breathing pattern is suited for your body and is a

natural reaction, but can also be controlled and used whenever needed, at any time. Stretching and Bending Stretching is to the body what breathing is to the nerve force. The body contains balls of nerves serving various functions, including the nerve force that contains thought energy. When we stretch, twist or bend different body parts we are releasing physical magnetism into our system. In order to stretch the Solar Plexus that is located between the stomach and spine, draw the abdominal muscles in and hold, repeating several times. The Sacral Plexus is located in the hips, and can be stimulated by bending over and then from side to side, and repeated as well. Control over Will The use of will is described as the most powerful and least understood mental force that is the subject of personal magnetism. There are three types of people in the world in relation to will. The first group are those who have no inkling about their personal magnetism and therefore carelessly project it upon others. The second group use their personal magnetism yet are doing so unconsciously, and are the active

leaders and successful people but with faults and stresses. This leaves the third group, people that have acknowledged their personal magnetism, know how to project their magnetism and use it for their advantage. These people are the “Masters of the Art.” The projection of personal magnetism begins with one's belief in their ability to project and follows through with a conscious effort by will to project the force. Mental states are attitudes we have relating ourselves to the outside world, for instance, charismatic people exude charm when they enter a room because they are in that mental state. If someone wants to be positive, with initiative, courage, increased self-esteem, and a leader then they must think positive thoughts, and be in the mental states of each of these traits, constantly thinking of these characteristics they wish to bestow upon themselves. If they are consistently thinking of negative thoughts, then traits such as fear, laziness, passive behaviors and isolation will follow. This makes it so important to monitor our thoughts and mental states. Also, if you want to be successful, be around other successful people as you hold the ideal of success constantly in your mind's eye. Avoid negative people.

Be Silent! Silence is necessary to achieve mental success, and you should never boast of your desires or designs to others by maintaining will over yourself. Bragging can only serve selfish motives and mental states and should be left to those who are weak. The author continues by using a mental video of two threads, physical and mental magnetism, joining together as one and traveling through the tiny eye of a needle leading into another personal atmosphere, and symbolizing the journey of our magnetism as it is sent into a certain direction by action of will. Everyone alive is constantly sending out personal magnetism. We will always be affected by this unless we have a more positive personal atmosphere than the other person, or we deliberately shut out these vibrations. A direct flash is utilized to send out a jolt of positive personal magnetism either to one person or a huge crowd. This flash can be used to block out another person's vibrations or to send out your own. However, to influence others you must be in the correct mind state, and have no ill intentions or bad will in mind. The book continues with eight exercises that use the will of mind to project personal magnetism onto others.

Is this Program for ME? This book was written to teach individuals about the art and science behind personal magnetism. However, there are certain personality types that would benefit from reading and applying their knowledge in their occupations and daily lives. Anyone that promotes themselves as a hands-on healer will be impressed by the increased ability to channel their thoughts in order to heal physical pain. Religious leaders would benefit as well, since they are in the business of healing all walks of life. Political figures and teachers and anyone else interested in leading and guiding large groups can learn how to gain attention and respect from this book. In today's unemployment situation, those looking for work can follow these teachings to discover their true inner self and redirect their lives to follow this dream. In fact, anyone wanting to learn how to use their will to influence others will benefit from reading “The Art and Science of Personal Magnetism.” However, anyone using this power must make certain they understand what they are getting into because if the will or personal magnetism is used in a selfish or negative manner, that person will inflict more damage and problems upon themselves than they had when they started the process.

Sum of it All To sum it up, personal magnetism is made up of mental and nerve forces in every body. The correct application of these forces can lead to successful results. Breathing, mediation, stretching and bending are exercises that increase personal magnetism. The projection of personal magnetism involves control over will, and must be used with caution. Silence is crucial in developing personal magnetism, as boasting and blabbing only decrease one's power and self-control.

The Art of War Sun Tzu This book lays out the plans for being successful at war or during battle, conflict or business tactics. Adopted by the United States military as a recommended reading for CIA and U.S. Military Intelligence personnel, this ancient text has been adapted into television shows, movies and video games. This version of the text was written in the sixth century B.C. by Sun Tzu, a Chinese military officer, strategist and philosopher. It is imperative to learn the art of war in order to survive and succeed as a group when faced with adversaries. Five constant factors are identified as requirements for success: 1.

The moral law

2.

Heaven

3.

Earth

4.

The commander

5.

Method and discipline The moral law brings obedience at all costs to the

members of the group. Heaven includes the five elements (fire, earth, water, metal and wood), four seasons (spring, summer,

fall and winter), wind and clouds. Earth involves distances, security and ground (mountains and valleys). The Commander demands virtues of wisdom, sincerity, benevolence, courage and strictness. Method and discipline involve order and rank, maintenance of roads and control of expenditures. To begin with, ask the follow questions of both sides: 1.

Do they have harmony and understanding of the Moral

Law? 2.

Which general or leader has the most ability?

3.

Who has advantages of Heaven and Earth?

4.

Which side is most disciplined?

5.

Which army is stronger, morally and physically?

6.

Whose men are highly trained and practiced?

7.

Who has the greater constant between reward and

punishment? All warfare is based on deception, trickery, playing naive, dumb and ignorant; never be boastful or loquacious with affairs so that the opposition doesn't know where they stand and overestimate themselves so they think they are overprepared than they need to be to win. When waging war consider the ways and the means of battle. Be quick; lengthy wars are costly and of no more benefit

than short wars. Use up your own goods, then forage from the enemy's side, but do not transport back and forth from home base. This also gives your side the incentive to kill the enemy in order to pilfer their goods, as a reward or motivation for battle. Never destroy a country or village after a capture; keep it in good condition to prevent reconstruction at the end of the war and to use if necessary for base. Why destroy a perfectly good city when it will have to be rebuilt after the war? Also this keeps the civilians on better terms than if you go in and kill, steal and torch all the buildings, which could be useful for food, shelter, base or even morale. Break resistance without bloodshed whenever possible. This method is attack by stratagem, and overthrows the government without injuring the townsfolk, or civilians. A civilian unit can be governed with humanity and justice, but military units are governed by opportunism and flexibility. This is an important distinction to make when dealing with civilians in the battlefield. Three ways a leader can self-destruct an army: 1.

Command them to do something they are not capable of

doing, for any reason. 2.

Try to rule an army the same way as civilians.

3.

Employ officers who aren't equipped to do their duty. Five essentials to victory for the leader:

1.

Knowing when to fight and when to not fight.

2.

Knowing how to deal with superior and inferior forces.

3.

A cohesive spirit throughout all ranks.

4.

Who is prepared when the other side is not will succeed.

5.

Who has military capacity and is left alone to do their

service by their sovereign ruler. Tactical dispositions involve securing oneself against defeat while waiting for the moment to attack the enemy. Win with ease by sitting patiently for the right time. By allowing the enemy to fret and attack prematurely, your army will have the advantage of being calm and collected when the fighting begins. Also, by letting the other side be involved in the most activity, your side will be using less physical energy and have that extra strength for mental warfare. Any size army can be directed to accomplish a task by dividing the task up, and using signs and signals to direct the group. Indirect and direct attacks are used in combination with one another to achieve victory. Indirect attacks are circular, meaning they come back in force again and again, while direct attacks use physical force and are exhaustible. Indirect attacks are mental components, such as decisions or tactics used to attack that are planned before the

physical battle begins. However, the use of combined energy of the entire army is much more effective than using the strength of a few individuals, and when battle begins, the whole army must move and fight as one being in order to ensure victory. Be the first to arrive for battle, and the first to impose will on the other group. Attack areas that are weak. The enemy might have issues such as lack of food, water, sleep, weaponry, or shelter which would all be good places to target. Be subtle and secretive so the enemy does not know your weak points. Find out what the enemy has planned for attack, and compare your own group and plans to theirs. Learn what areas of your own group are weaker and strengthen them. Do not always use the same standard game plan. Instead, let circumstances change your direction and change the plan of action whenever needed. Avoid the strong enemy, and target the weak. If the enemy is stronger in force than your army, wait until they lose some of their energy before attacking, or target any weak points they may have to break them down. Maneuvering involves deviation and becoming familiar with Heaven and Earth. Do not let your army lose its spirit as a team, and always fight in the morning when spirits are fresh and alert. Always let the enemy think there is a chance of success or escape because if they are backed into a corner or a

hard position they will fight tooth and nail to beat your army. Never fight on a hilltop or bottom because it puts your army at risk of being trapped. Do not isolate your group or get trapped. Leave towns alone that are not part of war and join forces with allies that are encountered. The art of war relies on a readiness to receive the enemy with an unassailable position. Five faults of a general: 1.

Reckless

2.

Coward

3.

Temper

4.

Easily ashamed

5.

Too much empathy When the army is on the march, stay in the valleys near

water and food sources, and sleep in the security of the mountains. However, do not follow the rivers or stay near waterways because this will be the first place the enemy is headed when they come near them in order to stock up and replenish their resources. Stay above the enemy, on higher ground, and always face the sun. If the enemy provokes battle, then they want your side to advance out of your position. If the enemy camps out in an easily accessible location, it is bait for you to attack them. If you cannot locate the enemy, look for

trees or brush that has been cut, animals running away or birds in flight, as this shows the path the enemy is taking. Watch out for the enemy's men who are leaning on their spear (they are exhausted), are drinking at a water hole rather than bottling water (they are thirsting), have no cook pots hanging on their campsite (they will fight to the death in the next battle), are whispering in groups (discord within the unit), or send their compliments (they are wanting a truce). Terrain is divided into six categories for reference during war: 1.

Accessible ground - plenty of roads and ways to

communicate 2.

Entangling ground - net-like country where units can be

ensnared 3.

Temporizing ground - allows delay or to stave off the

enemy 4.

Narrow passes

5.

Precipitous heights

6.

Positions at great distance from the enemy There are six calamities that a general is responsible for

that can devastate an army:

1.

Flight - when faced with an overwhelming situation the

soldiers will flee 2.

Rout - general is unknowledgeable and unprepared for a

battle yet proceeds Everyone must know their place, from the highest commander to the general, all the way down to the soldier. If every person respects, honors and obeys the others in the unit, and loves them just as a tight knit family, victory will always be in reach and will be a sweet reward. There are nine situations involving varieties of ground that are characteristic of battle: 1.

Dispersive ground - fighting on one's own territory

2.

Facile ground - penetration of hostile territory

3.

Contentious ground - greatest advantaged ground to

either side 4.

Open ground - liberty of movement for each side

6.

Serious ground - penetration of the heart of hostile county

and taking down cities in the process 7.

Difficult ground - forests, steeps, marshes; hard to

traverse 8.

Hemmed-in ground - in narrow gorges, where small

numbers can overpower a large army 9.

Desperate ground - can only be spared by fighting without

delay Attack by fire is mandatory for use in battle. When using fire there are a few rules to follow. Make sure you always have it available, use it in dry weather, use it with a rising wind, watch the direction of the wind and the fire, and always be out of the way of fire. Here are five ways to carry out this tactic: 1.

Burn soldiers in their camp

2.

Burn stores where grain and foods are held

3.

Burn baggage trains and wagons

4.

Burn arsenals, weapons, implements and clothing

5.

Hurl dropping fire among the enemy by shooting arrows

on fire at their groups The use of spies is mandatory and a necessity in order to save the most lives in war. Spies are used to gain valuable knowledge about the enemy that can prevent large battles

from taking place. Using spies is just and humane, and should always be taken advantage of during wartime. In fact, certain information can only be collected using spies, and can save time and energy of a lengthy battle. There are five classes of spies: 1.

Local spies - local people from the area of the enemy

2.

Inward spies - enemy officials

3.

Converted spies - spies from the enemy's side

4.

Doomed spies - your spies that tell the enemy deceptive

information on purpose to mislead them 5.

Surviving spies - bring news from the enemy camp Spies must be used with intuitive sagacity, subtlety,

benevolence and straightforwardness. Never mislead the spy being used, and by being honest about your intentions, the spy gains and returns trust in you. This is required, since most spies will be from the enemy side, and you do not want them to become spies against you, while pretending to be spying for you. Also, it is most efficient to use spies from each of the categories, interwoven as a team.

As A Man Thinketh James Allen James Allen was born the immigrant son to an English father who was later murdered after immigrating to the United States. Allen chose to live an ideal life of voluntary poverty, ascetic self-discipline and manual labor, such as described by Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy, in order to achieve selfimprovement, true happiness and become a master of virtues. An interesting intellectual, Allen led a routine existence involving meditation, exercise, gardening and conversing with other great minds about philosophy or meditation. In “As a Man Thinketh,” Allen eloquently describes the use of thought in selfcontrol so to achieve serenity in our lives. We are What We Think Those who have noble and honest thinking are associated with God-like character. A groveling person is bound to have thoughts of “an ignoble and bestial character.” The choice is made by each individual whether or not to be happy or miserable, and by controlling our thoughts we can reroute life in a particular path. Our mind is akin to a garden that must be weeded and cultivated with beneficial flowers and delectable

fruits or it will become overgrown. However, what we plant in the garden is what we intend on growing, and it must be cautioned that some plants are pests and of no benefit. No one is born in jail or with a needle in their arm. Humans who end up in horrible circumstances unintentionally plan their fate by nesting the negative thought and desire in their minds at a young age. This thought actualizes and becomes reality, as a person is master of his thoughts and maker of themselves. Just the same, a man only gets what he justly earns, and will certainly lose anything he achieves in a dishonest deal. We are Inherently Good Everyone wants a change in their life, a more fulfilling existence, but they are not willing to admit their faults in order to move forward. However, good thoughts and actions never produce negative results. Therefore, if someone can change their thoughts to be positive, it follows by the Law of Nature that their environment will become positive. Suffering is “the effect of wrong thought in some direction...It is an indication that the individual is out of harmony with himself,” and is used for purification of the body. Suffering has nothing to do with how rich someone is, as indigence is just as wretched as

indulgence. The universe craves positive and harmonious conditions, and as long as someone has good intentions then their plans will come forth in fruition. The body is seen as the servant to the mind, and disease and health are rooted in thought. Anxiety demoralizes the body triggering disease and illness. In order to be completely harmonious, the body must consume nutritious foods just as the thoughts of one's mind remain positive. Both are equally as important, and one cannot overcome the lack of the other. Allen states “a sour face does not come by chance; it is made by sour thoughts...Wrinkles that mar are drawn by folly, passion, pride.” In order to achieve success, make a plan and stick by your decisions. With a clear purpose in life and perseverance, you can do anything. Failure is a result of thinking about failing. “Dreamers are the saviors of the world” The world is beautiful because of the “composer, sculpture, painter, poet, prophet, [and] sage,” and they “are the makers of the after world, the architects of heaven.” All great arts and discoveries started with a small glimpse of hope that something existed beyond all that is fathomable. Once a dream is recognized, if this is the vision of the heart, the dreamer will

“always gravitate toward that which [they] secretly most love.” Most people see an important person who has become a figurative success, and they say, “how lucky” without taking into account the sacrifices, efforts, and faith that was required by the “lucky one” to get where they are today. Instead, we should be looking at the sacrifices, efforts and faith and applying this knowledge in order to become just as successful. Serenity The last lesson that Allen presents is the serenity, a result of persistent self-control. People who possess a strong, sweet and calm demeanor are the most popular for business deals and social interaction, as they radiate ultimate peace from within their soul. However, most people ruin their lives by a lack of self-control, failing to reach Heaven within through the omnipotent happiness of serenity. If only humans could realize that peace and serenity exists within they would not have to subject themselves to pain and tortures trying to find the ultimate joy from without. Is this Program for ME? sensation or the hottest supermodel in hopes to achieve wonderful peace and fulfillment, they soon learn that fame, glory and wealth are not the necessary ingredients to living a happy life. Most people spend hours upon hours wishing to be someone they are not, and once they transform themselves into that “someone special” they soon realize that they cannot transform the person inside with any amount of plastics or silicon. Everyone should read “As a Man Thinketh” if they truly want to be happy while they are here on earth. Sum of it All Allen stresses the importance of monitoring our thoughts, as we are inherently what we think. Also, the universal mind is a good mind, and therefore we are all born with good intentions and hopes of bettering ourselves as we are a continuation of the Universal. Those who use their creativity and inner strength are representative of the true beauty of life, and those representations are presented in a variety of forms of art and should be appreciated by everyone. As our body is a temple housing our soul and mind, we must nourish each of these parts to our whole. This is because the only way to true inner happiness begins with a pure wholesome self that is selfless, and ends with serenity.

Character-Building Thought Power Ralph Waldo Trine I will be what I will to be Everyone has the inner ability to be whosoever they wish in this life. We are provided with the opportunities and life experiences to form habits and our individual character. If we wish to achieve a great success and become powerful and influential, we must work hard to watch our habits and character. This book describes the necessity of positive influence and benevolent character traits to anyone who really wants to make a difference in the world. Starting with small habits occurring every so often, any bad habit can become a disaster. The author describes a situation of a moralistic gentleman who is nonchalant about his occasional sip of alcohol, until one day, as a result of the laws of nature, he wakes up to find he is an alcoholic near the end of his rope. The importance of building solid strong character from early on so that it can be of great use in our future is exponential since life is a cumulative learning process. One cannot expect to change their character or quit bad habits overnight, because as these traits were learned over years it

will take several more years to completely unlearn them. “How am I supposed to even begin ridding myself of bad habits?” First, Trine states by using the scientific method, we can replace bad habits with desirable characteristics. Thought is the “force underlying all” that we do in our life, and just as we control our thoughts, we control our life. Be careful of what you are thinking, because your thoughts will become your reality. The Law of Indirectness states that a thought can be put out of mind by replacing it with a new thought, rather than ignoring the thought altogether or dwelling and worrying about it all the time. For example, if you are filled with thoughts of anger and frustration, you should replace them with charm and brightness or wittiness. All bad habits have a polar opposite, i.e. good versus evil and love versus hate, and we must use the opposite emotion in situations where the bad habit pops up. 2 Steps to Obtain Good Ideals: 1.

Form the ideals.

2.

Follow them continually no matter what happens. Remember, a really strong character will sacrifice present

pleasure for future good. Keep this statement in your heart in hopes of developing a solid character for yourself.

The Meaning of Life Life is meant to be lived. Trine says that life is meant for the “highest unfoldment, noblest character, [and] greatest service to mankind.” Instead of living in a constant state of acceptance to your environment for what it is worth, we need to examine what to do to change the situation for the better. Meet the conditions that exist and learn to work alongside them, and gradually they will improve. Some people who are having problems will often ask “why me” or “why is this happening” but they will fail to ask “how am I going to live with this until it improves.” Complaining only leads to depression, which is capable of killing your spirit. Life is one great lesson. Even though it may seem like our current situation or condition is unbearable and life is not worth living, as we continue on we learn the lesson that life had presented to us. Everything has a reason and a place in our lives that cross our paths. When you are in a tough situation go with the flow and do not complain or become depressed because this is a test on your will and character. And watch out about giving advice. Everyone is living their own life, and while sending suggestions to an easier path is alright, you should let that person take their journey as they wish. As we study our situation and learn what law of nature is in effect we should be

harmonious to our condition, which is easier since we have peace of mind from understanding this is only a test. If we do try and fight the “system” we will find our self broken into pieces, in the form of suffering, loss, pain and desolation. Keep in Mind No matter what the problem we have in life, there are always those who are suffering far greater than we, so we should always extend service to others. Work hard in life, as the rewards include “virtues of strength, noble character, sweetness in disposition, sympathy and care for others and the final triumph of everything good and honest.” Then, even as everything in your life dies or decays and you remain youthful and energetic, you will have the virtues forever. These gifts are priceless. Thoughts are at the beginning of all progress or retrogression, successes and failures, and all that we desire and despise of life. Since like attracts like, and like creates like, thanks to the laws of nature, we have great power in our thoughts. Remember everything takes time, and the laws states progress starts slow, increasing in speed in proportion to increasing power. Chance does not exist by the Laws of Cause and Effect stating everything is absolute. Our choice comes to

play when we choose between right and wrong, good and evil, happy and unhappy. Just keep in mind, all of this is cumulative and will take a lifetime for great success, so start early. The elderly are a reflection of this force, as you can notice either they are extremely nice and peaceful or completely unruly and chaotic. This is a result of a lifetime of habits building on one another. So, get a “little philosophy in life” early on; it will help you by comforting you in times of distress and give you strength when you feel like you have none. How Do I Build Character? First of all, you must find a center as soon as possible. Meditate and concentrate on inner peace and self. Then go out and think, speak, love and work from this center. Take time each day to reconnect with this center by contemplating higher ideals. As we grow and develop this center by using thoughtforce, we will find our Kingdom of Heaven that lies within. However, we cannot spend all of our time meditating and expecting to live from spiritual enlightenment alone. Physical and emotional health is just as important if we want holistic character.

Is this Program for Me? Everyone should use this program because even the most saintlike may have some bad habit or could change their character to serve others. More specifically, those who suffer from depression, anxiety and nervousness could benefit from this program, as it uses the power of positive thinking in conjunction with strengthening self for positive change and growth. Anyone that is miserable in their current state of living should at least read this book. Sum of It All Bad habits and strong character are all part of every life, yet people often fail to realize they control both of these and that hereditary and environment can be overcome to become a good person. By discovering the effect of character early on, we have the opportunity to grow and develop in a positive and right manner. This will prevent people from becoming overwhelmed with negative events because they will understand these are only tests to their self. We should live to serve others, even at times that we do not think we can even serve ourselves, as service unfolds humanity and power. This book is a great guide for teaching character-building to any age, and describes in detail how to build character for anyone.

The Edinburgh Lectures On Mental Science Thomas Troward Thomas Troward, 1847-1916, was born in India to English parents. He later served as a judge under British rule in India after studying Law. Troward loved painting as a hobby, winning awards for his artwork. An avid reader and writer, Troward studied the Bible, believing that everything in life could benefit from teachings found there. This set of lectures was published in 1909 as a handbook for controlling the power of the mind, and includes sixteen subjects that range from spirituality and matter, to understanding intuition and healing. People have a tendency to judge one another and make decisions based on external appearances, ideas, and traditions, instead of trusting their instincts and looking inward for guidance. To find enlightened intelligence we need to consistently search for truth in our thoughts, speech, and actions until we remove all the notions and traditions that prevent us from being our true self. Those individuals who live to please others find themselves always striving to say the “right” words, so they are politically correct. Yet they are missing the big picture, and by avoiding the truth in what they

are saying or how they are reacting, they are merely sheep following others. This keeps these followers from following their own path, living their own lives. “Livingness” can be measured in degrees from an active perceptive human to a solid moving rock, as all are made up of atoms constantly moving. Therefore life exists anywhere a form rests, and can be changed or molded. Troward proposes fundamentally the distinctive equality of spirit is thought, and of matter is form. Form has limits and is extensions of space. Thoughts are limitless, existing everywhere without boundaries of space or time. Time requires space, and therefore, without space, there is no time. Spirit is made of thought, so it can occur constantly, everywhere, without time or limits. An idea of something, a thought, must either exist or not, but an idea cannot be something that will exist in the future. Since thoughts are free from space or time, any thought or idea that is conceived has already occurred on the plane of life. By removing time and space, ideas or thoughts make up the present. In the food chain there is a structure where someone or something is higher and/or lower than another which means the greater intelligence knows more than the lower. This implies that there must be a greatest intelligence that knows

everything, based on the principles of life. Intelligence helps increase the odds of survival. Humans are limited by their individual volition from becoming the greatest intelligence, but as a person gains intelligence for themselves, they are less affected by the Law of Averages and their power increases for controlling their own world. The idea of mental science is in understanding how an individual's volition separates the individual from everyone else, a process occurring naturally through evolution to make people more adaptable and intelligent, which gives us freedom of choice and ideas, distancing us from the Law of Averages. There are two types of intelligence: atomic (cosmic) and individual. They are polar opposites and the atomic sends people messages by thoughtpower and can materialize results (i.e. cure of disease by mind). There is an infinite underlying Spirit that lives and acts as a power force, and by the Law of Nature this infinite forms a boundless unity (i.e. infinite numbers in mathematics). Pure spirit is void of time, space or individual personality, and is therefore, impersonal. The outer mind is objective; inner mind is subjective. Subjective mind is able to reason deductively, while the objective mind can operate inductively and deductively. Objective thinking uses preexisting ideas to conclude a third

idea, and inductive thinking compares a set of ideas to draw out a common factor. The subjective mind is under the control of the objective mind, and this is how hypnotism, the use of mental power and healing are performed. Personality that is assumed by the objective mind will become a reality, so by thinking thoughts of success, evil, poverty, etc. will allow them to materialize into real life. So since the subjective mind is what influences the body, this is where to access mental power to control physical realities. The hypnotic state is the subjective-normal-mind and the use of suggestion works here. Everyone has the power to change the physical environment by the use of thoughts. If one thinks and desires a healthy body, self and mind, through mental science this will come to be. The Law of Growth states that growth occurs naturally in its own time; nothing can be sped up or slowed down. If someone tries to rush growth or inhibit it, they will ultimately fail. Growth has to happen slow and steady in a rhythmic routine. Effective change does not occur overnight, and as anyone can witness, progress must take place in stages without skipping over one or staying at another. Like a freight train, growth keeps on chugging along pushing through at a steady pace, forging through the elements to get to the next station, and then the next in a never ending cycle. The first

COPYRIGHT © 2011 MYSUCCESSSEMINARS.COM

23 Self Help Classics

step in the growth process is to plant the seed of desire and feed it continually through efforts that are free of doubt. Fulfillment and success are meshed with ecstatic feelings and an insatiable need for achieving the desire. Mental visualization is a key tool in getting the job done, as these along with desires are all beyond human control and by the Law of Growth they will come true. Even though humans need to strive towards becoming more intelligent in order to achieve success and get away from the Law of Averages, it is necessary to remain connected to worldly ideas, such as socialization. Everything that occurs has a purpose in the individual's journey, and is part of a destiny that requires being overcome so the journey can continue. People go through trials and temptations to learn, grow and develop talents, character traits and habits that will benefit them along the way in the bigger picture of life. The trick is to remove one's self from the herd of society so that they are living towards their destiny and not by chance. By staying in a situation of hopelessness, poverty, racism or ignorance, a person will grow along a horizontal line and will remain in the same situation, instead of developing vertically, rising above their situation. For instance, when there is a cycle of young women giving birth, it is usually the case that their mothers’

COPYRIGHT © 2011 MYSUCCESSSEMINARS.COM

P a g e | 77

23 Self Help Classics

also gave birth young, as did their mothers. This is a situation that is constant, and the women never learn that they had a choice: “my mother did it this way, so I must also do it this way.” The problem is that most people do not believe they have a choice in life or the power to control their future. They believe that because their fathers or sisters or community did it a certain way, then this is the only way - they are afraid to break free from the pack or step out and be different because they expect to be ostracized from everyone. Everyone has the same wishes universally - success, happiness, love - but they allow their personality characteristics - abuse, neglect, social awkwardness, poverty - to control their lives as they hold onto their past. By letting go of these habits of thought after acknowledging them and addressing that these habits are holding the person back (i.e. therapy, counseling, education) they can move ahead without the baggage of their past. Knowledge gives individuals the power they need to control their destiny and move past chance in the game of life. The goal is to find a balance between the personality of the individual and the Universal Mind, so that the person can use their intelligence to get along with and influence others to accomplish their purpose as prescribed by the Universal Mind. To do this, requires the person to first identify their sole

COPYRIGHT © 2011 MYSUCCESSSEMINARS.COM

P a g e | 78

23 Self Help Classics

purpose and then to ask the Universal Mind to give us the power, personality and circumstances to achieve whatever success is desired for fulfillment of the purpose. The relative first cause is the power of primary causation manifested by an individual, and the power to initiate events in order to achieve a purpose is the whole object of mental science. For example, when a candle is lit in a room it turns bright, but blow out the candle and the room returns to darkness. The flame is the cause of the brightness, and one flame can grow to light the whole room. Everything has a positive and negative condition, a ying and a yang. However, a primary or first cause can never be negative because the negation would actually mean the cause simply did not exist or was never active. A condition is never a primary cause; it is an effect. This means that evil does not exist as a negative entity, but can be created in one's mind as an effect. Conditions, positive and negative, soon become causes of other conditions based on past occurrences if they are permitted to grow undeserved, like vines or weeds in a garden. This is important when identifying one's purpose, because if it is based on any circumstances, the purpose is based on secondary causes and uses doubts, fears and limitations. For instance, if someone wants to become the President of the United States so they can

COPYRIGHT © 2011 MYSUCCESSSEMINARS.COM

P a g e | 79

23 Self Help Classics

become richer than their snobby family members, instead of so they can serve a purpose of helping mankind, they will fall short of success because their purpose is a secondary cause to the job at hand. Since space and time do not exist in spirit, an individual has to imagine that their purpose is fulfilled and their desires' achieved because they already have in the plane of higher intelligence. By accepting this fact, the confidence should be there on a daily basis since there is no reason to worry or doubt one's success. No decision will be wrong, as long as it is thought through because everyone is part of the greater intelligent power who is acting through individuals. After the purpose is established, the individual should focus on the daily circumstances that arise, great or small. The Law of Supply will give the individual more opportunities in the right direction. Intuition is the action of the subjective mind, as the objective mind works by informing the lower mind what is needed but removed by time or space; it is a supporter of the individual. The purpose of mental science is to be able to work through the objective mind all of the time in order to use intuition to gain the knowledge needed at any time to make the right decisions. The objective mind is prompted by the subjective to do the right thing, follow the right direction.

Whenever the interior voice is persistent the individual is smart to follow its advice. But there is the necessity of listening to the voice for the right advice and not following every single urge that crosses the mind. The individual needs to think about what they are doing, and analyze it to make sure that it is going to benefit them in the future. Take time and let the thought process; do not act on whims. This goes back to taking time to accomplish a purpose and not rush into anything. There are two principles of the intuition: 1.

When the individual hears the intuition but has a feeling

they shouldn't obey it, this is the objective mind telling the person to do something; the feeling of “no” is based on facts in the subjective mind that are unapparent to the objective. This is the subjective mind trying to protect the individual. 2.

The individual's first impression of a feeling on a subject is

generally correct. The basis of all healing is a change in belief. The subjective mind creates what the objective mind tells it to through thought that is an expression of belief. A healer knows how to control individuals who are less in control of their subconscious, with his or her more powerful subjective mind in order to suggest perfect health. Since everyone is part of the

same continuum and Universal Mind, by telling one subconscious mind something, when the other person's volition is minimized (works best when they are asleep or hypnotized), they hear the same message. Healing strengthens the subject's individuality as the sickness is a part of them (not a separate entity) and by doing so their sickness is removed. The use of a strong willpower to accomplish a purpose is a bad idea because this causes the will to lessen over time, reducing its influence for the individual. Everyone is human, and therefore they are not creating anything so there is no need to use willpower to accomplish a purpose. An individual should use what they already have and should concentrate on distributing that energy instead of trying to create something from scratch. For instance, a writer should just write anything and by concentrating on the writing process using their thoughts they already have, they will get the words on paper needed to express themselves. Writers who experience “writer's block,” do so because they have been trying to force new ideas or expressions from themselves, attempting to create something that is without feeling or thought, and they have run out of these null ideas. Here is an idea of how an emotion can be transferred into a reality based on the previous ideas:

23 Self Help Classics

Emotion leads to desire which forces a judgment (yes or no); if yes, the will directs imagination to mentally envision the final product which causes forces of attraction leading to the Law of Growth until the final product becomes a physical reality The position of will is to act, remain neutral or wish to act, according to the judgment made by the individual, and to maintain the position and let the Law of Attraction create the actions of attracting circumstances that lead to the goal. It is a steady, calm, peaceful determination. The focus of the will is learning to choose wisely what results to produce. Every cause leads to effects, so an individual must be thoughtful of what they are doing when following their intuition. There are two rules for concentrating: 1.

Shut out all thoughts in negativity and leave the fact that

the Law of Action is in place and accomplishment is certain. 2.

Concentration is for the purpose of determining the quality

given to otherwise scattered energy, and not to arrange the specific circumstances that are required to achieve success. In other words, do not sweat the small stuff; keep focused on the main purpose. Instead of stressing about the task at hand for here and now, focus on self as part of a whole that is universal.

There are three facts about the subconscious: creative power, amenable to suggestion and an inability to work by any other than deduction. For people who are uneducated, or followers, this means they have only tradition to base their ideas on; when they learn to think for themselves they can change their ideas. An individual needs to act the way they are thinking. If one wants to change their thought, it must be followed up by a change in action. Having the right mental attitude as a habit, and by the Law of Correspondence, it will materialize. Think good thoughts and do not gossip, judge or be snide. The physical and mental worlds are connected, and an individual can use vital energy, directed by their mind to make their body react and mental attitude change. Every mental action precedes a corresponding molecular action in the brain and nervous system. The soul comes into the picture through meditation. Intuition works best in the direction an individual concentrates their thought, so by meditating on abstract ideas related to a desired subject this allows the intuition to work best. The spirit is creative, kind, powerful, love and beauty, and is part of everyone, and therefore desires every individual to share these traits.

How To Live On 24 Hours A Day Arnold Bennett This book is written in a simple common explanation noting what is so obvious about the average everyday person's dilemma today. Everyone follows a typical cycle that involves leaving home, going to work and then returning home from work. This cycle means that most people are constantly in a fog unaffected by daily activities with no true meaning or purpose for their life. Or, they don't even have a job to go to as they have been laid off from their job. Certainly some people in this group may have a desperate life, living from moment to moment frozen in their situation. No matter what the situation, everyone has the same interest in this book - the value of time. This book provides understanding about the obvious: our complete wasting of time and how valuable time should be to everyone. Note this book was written 100 years ago. Yet, the information is as fresh and relevant as if Arnold Bennett lived in New York City today and not London in 1910. Time is the most important commodity that we all share equally every day, and this has been true through the sands of time. We all place our price on time, either through the amount we are paid hourly or the amount we pay someone else. Yet when we have our own free time, we tend to waste it needlessly, as if we owned the

sands of time. We should take the time we are given and use it wisely. The Value of Time Your happiness depends on how you spend your time. “We shall never have any more time. We have, and we always had, all the time there is.” Anyone who goes through his days doing the same basic expected routine of boredom begins to feel disconnected and blasé until they go against the norm and do something out of the ordinary. We try to start a new exercise routine or to read all of our back issues to the National Geographic, and get an adrenaline rush at the idea of fitting back into those size two's or learning about all the indigenous groups around the globe. However, as soon as the novelty wears off, we give up. Ardor, or too much passion and intensity is also to blame, says Bennett. We get all caught up in the newness and overlook the actual work that has to be done in order to get the desired results. Or we decide to go out like we always do on Friday night skipping the new program for fun and the usual routine. Then two days later we are back to our same old boring ways. However, the common excuse still rings through. There are not enough hours in a day. This is something most of us have been affected by, yet we will never have any more time than we have right now.

Something people often overlook is the quality use of time. Any task we have takes time. However, most often people look forward to the end or goal of finishing the task, without giving much devotion to the time that is spent completing the task. This is important because everyone has heard the elderly population make such statements as they wished they had done this or that. Well if we take the time to understand the value and quality of the time we spend, we can learn from their mistakes. The next mistake is the lack of passion we have when completing tasks or projects. Our general attitude must be passionate and devoted to the activity on which we are spending our precious time. We must first respect and appreciate our time before we can truly value it. Time Saving Plan The plan itself consists of 30 minutes six mornings per week, and one and a half hours a minimum of three evenings per week, for a total of seven and a half hours. This time, as recommended by Bennett, should be set aside to the study of any interesting topic or time to reflect on literary masterpieces, poetry in particular, to its completion and total understanding. This time should not be spent on gardening, hiking, biking, fishing or any other simple task we should be doing anyway. Whatever topic we decide to study, we should make certain to

set a specific time period, say one month, on focusing and studying only that topic to become an expert, as this achievement brings about higher self-esteem and confidence. Concentrate on the topic as completely as possible for the specific time. Bennett lists a few impressive readings, “Aurora Leigh” by E.B. Browning and William Hazlitt's essay “On Poetry in general,” as well as a few others that are recommended as worthy to spend our time studying. However, he goes on to say that not all impressive literature or serious readings are wellintentioned in the area of self-impression. We should choose a topic or time period to study instead of a single definitive piece, but we must make certain to be passionate about this topic. By using our thoughts to concentrate on what we find arousing in our mind we can obtain knowledge to be used to create change in our lives. Is this Program for ME? If you are wondering if this program is right for you, it is. Simply stated, this program is for anyone who spends time on this planet, and that is every single person that is living and breathing. The purpose of “How to Live on 24 Hours a Day” is to spend at least a portion of time we normally flutter by on

learning about something important to us. Not only do we achieve expert status about any particular subject giving us more collateral in the social world, but we are also gaining self confidence and self esteem in which everyone could benefit from. Sum of it All The self-improvement book, “How to Live on 24 Hours a Day,” teaches the importance and value of time. Through the description of the obvious, Bennett shows us the details of the mundane lives of workers from a century ago which are eerily similar to the lives of workers of today to explain that just like the worker we are all wasting precious time. By setting aside a “superprogramme,” Bennett gives us a step-by-step guide of explaining why we should spend time on becoming experts on topics we are passionate about, how to go about beginning such an undertaking and what is the overall effect of this change in our daily routine.

How To Use Your Mind Harry D. Kitson The lecture notes for psychology professor, Kitson, are provided in book form as a guide for his classes on the subject of using one's mind. While the outline and subject matter refers for the most part to using this ability in a collegiate setting, the principles set forth by Kitson can be applied for anyone who is interested in getting the most out of themselves by using their own mind power. Whenever someone is reading or listening to a speech, participating in a group discussion or attending a conference for their job, it can serve them well to concentrate on the speaker or topic. Most people are too afraid to depend on their memory to remember the information, and spend a great deal of time copying the information verbatim from the author or source. However, by spending more time listening and concentrating on what they are being taught, anyone can learn to use their mind more efficiently. For instance, instead of writing everything down that is said or read, make an outline of the important topics but leave all the content to the mind. Here is the tricky part. Take the information that is provided and make logical assumptions and mental connections to the new

data. In doing so, the learner will pick up more of the important context than by simply memorizing raw facts. This is especially crucial for real-world application of what one learns. Anyone can read an almanac or dictionary and learn all kinds of stuff, but it will remain useless information until they are applying what they have learned and using their knowledge to help them work through a problem or sticky situation. The Brain is a Message Board The brain is a muscle that works by using nerve cells to sense thoughts and then translates them into action. Nerve cells have three distinct properties: 1.

Impressibility

2.

Conductivity

3.

Modifiability Every time a thought vibration is received by a nerve cell

it results in an equivocal action. For instance, when someone touches a hot surface the nerve cells act by forcing the body away from the heat. This happens through habit, and just as a baby cannot interpret the sensation of heat, once this sensation has been established, the habit will last until it is altered. The forming of habits is crucial to everyday functions,

as it would be impossible to get anything done if everyone had to relearn how to eat, sleep and use the toilet every single day. Once a mental impression is made with the nerve cells, it is engrained in the mind, and it becomes a challenge to change the impression. These impressions occur on the first time of experience and are reinforced with repeated exposure. People go through lots of impressions during their youth, and as they age it is more challenging to change habits and behaviors. This can be seen especially with the elderly who are “set in their ways,” and have no desire to learn new habits or break old ones as they have accepted them as part of themselves. The importance of making the right first impression, either with new acquaintances or information, can cause a person to remember the name correctly or pronounce a foreign word the right way. Making an incorrect or vague first impression of such information can be disastrous, as it is hard to relearn anything after the impression has been made. Making New Habits Impressions can be changed, and new habits will result, so do not despair if this is an issue. While it takes hard work and dedicated effort, habits can be broken. There are four steps to forming new habits:

1.

Use willpower

2.

Make a forceful start full of true effort to accomplish the

new habit, doing whatever it takes to make the change 3.

Do not quit or make excuses to procrastinate; if you quit

once the habit of failure becomes engrained 4.

Be open to every opportunity to succeed in your work Habits can be our friends instead of annoying ticks. For

example, habits lead to human consistency, are conducive to the greater good for all mankind, increase accuracy while decreasing error, make general living easier, and save valuable time through the use of routines so we have more energy to take care of more important issues. We can have great peace of mind knowing that by being steadfast and dedicated to something by use of habit, through the Laws of Nature the day will come when success and finality will be found. When we have difficulties making memories correctly and we form incorrect habits, it is useful to understand the correct process in creating habits. There are four steps in the process of creating a habit: 1.

Impression

2.

Retention

3.

Recall

4.

Recognition

Memories come in two forms: they can either be immediate or deferred memories. The process is to impress the whole concept in your mind, meditate upon it while concentrating the mind to focus on the concept, and repeat the process for a period of time according to the amount time it takes to make the habit. Use logical association to connect the concept to the rest of your memory and intend on remembering this forever, not just for a certain length of time. Active Imagination Mental images are different from physical images such as photographs. These images are created through the mind, and often evoke smells, emotions, colors, etc. that are related to the power of the imagination. Through the power of the imagination, great thinkers have produced brilliant masterpieces that can only be conceived by someone with the ability to take common place items and experiences, and imagine them in a completely new form. In order to master the art of developing an active imagination, first we must find out what constitutes this use of the mind. There are three desirable attributes of great works of the imagination: 1.

Number

2.

Variety

COPYRIGHT © 2011 MYSUCCESSSEMINARS.COM

P a g e | 94

23 Self Help Classics

3.

Vividness The number of the imagination refers to the amount of

memories or images that are conjured up through the mind. Life experiences can provide a vast number of images for the active imagination. The variety of images includes the five senses of smell, taste, sight, sound and touch. For example, think of a smell or taste that takes you back to your childhood or a memory of someone who is dead. The vividness, or details of images, includes the ability to use all of the five senses as a memory is recalled. Imaginative geniuses use each of these attributes and expand upon them, and take images from their imagination and expand upon them to create new and exciting works or productions. Some people may start out by only watching images or memories from their mind, but are unable to hear or use any other sense with them. Through practice, we can work to concentrate on these images and conjure up the other senses by recalling in vivid detail what is in our mind. Expressions Every thought that enters the realm of nerve cells must come out of the system through some conducive form of action, by expressing itself through movements of the body. There are three main avenues:

COPYRIGHT © 2011 MYSUCCESSSEMINARS.COM

P a g e | 95

23 Self Help Classics

1.

Speech

2.

Writing

3.

Drawing By extending your mind through forms of expression you

allow the release of this energy to be put forth to good use. You can stimulate ideas by expressive movements as well. For instance, whenever someone is going to give a speech but they are overcome by nerves, they can laugh or cough or release the nerves in some way in order to gain their composure. For writers who complain of “writer's block,” they can benefit from simply writing anything on any topic. This stimulates thoughts to flow from their fingers like ink and avoids the procrastination of waiting for some inspiration. How to Use the Mind By taking these ideas and concepts and applying them, we can learn to modify our thoughts and become interested in new things simply by learning about relative topics that connect what we know to what is unknown. If we have a subject that is foreign and unapproachable, it is beneficial to connect what we know about the subject and use that to feign interest until it becomes habit. If we are interested in learning a foreign language but feel overwhelmed by it, it would be of great use

to study topics that we already understand, such as traveling or art, and learn new words and people that are related to the foreign language to gain interest. However, many people still find themselves nonchalant in their interest and lazy. Mental fatigue is typically the influx of great ideas and the inability or drive to do the work, as ideas require labor for completion. There is a mental second wind that comes to the rescue. Many people who have been awake for longer than they anticipate for either work or some other reason can attest to the power of the second wind. We have much more physical and mental ability than we give ourselves credit for, and by ignoring the initial fatigue that sets in as we are using our mind for some purpose we can push through and will be rewarded by increased stamina and creativity. This does not mean to become an insomniac; we need to sleep sufficiently to take care of our body, but too much rest decreases our efficiency and the amount of work accomplished. We should also eat a healthy diet and exercise daily to make the most of our bodily functions. Is This Program For Me? Most people who are constructive in their lives will benefit from learning how to use their minds correctly and in an

efficient manner. Anyone that learns new things or wants to change their behavior to better themselves will benefit from understanding how the mind operates. People that have a difficult time learning new things or establishing routines should learn how to concentrate from this book. Anyone that feels that they are incapable of getting great amounts of creative work accomplished successfully can learn how to harness the active imagination and expand upon it for their use. In general, anyone who wishes to improve their efficiency can benefit from reading this material. Sum of it All The use of the mind is vital in accomplishing any task successfully and with true grit. By learning the science of the mind, and how thoughts become habitual actions, we can train our mind to work for our purpose in a concentrated effort. As long as we are persistent and dedicated to achieving success, through use of the active imagination and the mental second wind, we have the tools that are required to make an effort a success. While this book was written as a lecture for psychology students, the information is relative and applicable to anyone who is interested in using their mind more efficiently.

Hypnotism And Self-Hypnotism Ralph Slater Hypnotism: A History Hypnotism has been in existence since the beginning of human existence, and is a form of mental influence that was part of the psyches of people living in ancient Egypt, India, Persia and China thousands of years ago. Modern hypnotism was first named “mesmerism” by Frederick Anton Mesmer of Vienna who moved to Paris in 1778 to perform hypnotism shows for large crowds of curious citizens. Mesmer grew quite popular as he cured thousands of spectators. His popularity was soon relinquished after his theory of animal magnetism magnetic power flowed to heal humans and he would harness such power - was found fallible and many of his gadgets and gizmos proved to be worthless junk. Dr. James Braid discarded the animal magnetism theory of mesmerism, and coined the term “hypnotism” from the Greek word “hypnos” meaning sleep. Other French doctors who worked with hypnotism during this time period in France were Liebault, Bernheim and Charcot. In the United States, Professor William James, Dr. Boris Sidis and G. Stanley Hall

developed the theory of subconscious to explain hypnosis. The famous Sigmund Freud began his career as a devotee of hypnotism. Slater published this book, “Hypnotism and SelfHypnotism” in 1950, as an instruction manual for hypnotism on self and others in the quest of knowledge of hypnotism. The Power of Suggestion Advertising and salesmanship can benefit in a major way by the power of suggestion. Advertisers and marketers use print (and now mass media) for greed rather than good. Slater says that the news reports are all printing negative press, and the media is perpetuating negativity by spreading it to thousands and thousands of people every day. So, how do we stop all this trash from being leaked into our brains by the mass media in the form of television, movies, books, magazines, newspapers and present-day internet, and how can we reverse the damage that has already taken place? The answer is by using the power of hypnotism and self-hypnotism. If someone is looking for a good psychiatrist to perform hypnotism on themselves, then Slater has listed three important characteristics for everyone to use in their evaluations. The psychiatrist should be a good listener, a direct talker and have the widest personal experience and

understanding. There are five methods of hypnotism as discussed in the book that can be used to induce hypnotism. 1.

Braid method - dangling an object in front of the eyes to

hypnotize 2.

Reclining method - using a couch to relax into hypnotism

3.

Counting method - to influence hypnosis

4.

Ralph Slater method - Slater's choice method that was

quick and uses vibrations 5.

Use of narcotics to instigate hypnosis; only appropriate in

extreme circumstances The Dangers of Hypnotism Everything we do in life has dangers from driving in a car to swimming in a pool, but that does not mean we should leave these things to the side. Hypnotism, when used correctly, can be of great benefit to the patient, just as any other therapy or treatment in medicine. Also, hypnotism strengthens the mind rather than weakens it, so that should not be a reason people are skeptical. While there is never a real danger that someone will not wake up from hypnotism, there are other true risks associated with this form of mental influence. First, a person's moral or religious principles should never

COPYRIGHT © 2011 MYSUCCESSSEMINARS.COM

P a g e | 101

23 Self Help Classics

be opposed during hypnotism. This would apply to the stage shows where hypnotism is used for entertainment value. Second, Slater states that hypnotism is a cooperation of wills and should never be a struggle, meaning children younger than three and “morons and completely insane” people are not capable candidates for hypnotism. Third, never let anyone touch the person in hypnosis because then the person interrupting the flow of mental energy will become receptive themselves. Finally, when it comes to serious ailments and physical conditions, a professional opinion should be obtained before any hypnosis takes place. Say a person comes to you wanting hypnosis to end a case of stomach pain. After you make the pain stop, the person could still die if there is another more serious condition underlining the pain. Physicians should be the ones using hypnosis in such circumstances just to be on the safe side. And remember that just as with any other treatment, like chiropractic care or counseling, one treatment is not going to cure the problem forever. You must have a series of hypnotism sessions until the situation is under control. More serious dangers were listed by Slater. No one with a weak heart should be hypnotized in case they have a heart attack and are unable to communicate during the hypnotism. People who are hysterical, dramatic or highly neurotic should

23 Self Help Classics

also be turned away, because they are unpredictable and can draw negative attention to the subject of hypnotism. Also, never hypnotize the opposite sex or shady people because they may use this as an opportunity to blackmail you by using sexual suggestions or financial gain to motive them. Finally, if someone does not wake up from being hypnotized this means they have fallen deeper into sleep and are simply taking a nap. They will wake up when they are fully rested, and should be allowed to do so. This is rare in any case, but the benefits of hypnotic sleep are that it is more relaxing and restful than normal sleep. Post-Hypnotic Suggestion The use of post-hypnotic suggestions is the way that people are able to use hypnosis for smoking cessation, to quit drinking, for obesity and to treat other bad habits. First of all, never use negative suggestions such as the use of “not” or “never” as you give suggestions to the person. Only use positive words and phrases so that the subconscious is removed from all negativity. There are three stages of hypnotism: very light, intermediate and complete somnambulism, where the first stage consists of closed eyes, and an active and conscious

23 Self Help Classics

person and the last is totally unconscious with no memory. Use the stages in sequence starting very light and advancing as necessary according to the patient, as each stage can be beneficial. Self-Hypnosis or Auto-Suggestion A person learns to control his own subconscious through self-hypnosis or auto-suggestion. An example of this in practice: tell yourself you must rise at a certain hour in the morning, and you are programming your thought to correlate with your action. Our subconscious is 90% of our mental capacity and power, and it acts on suggestion. However, it cannot reject suggestions we send to it, and the rational side of our mind is in our conscious. So, it is important to monitor all suggestions that come our way. Most suggestions, unfortunately, are negative, and young people depend solely on their subconscious so we are all the direct products of the environments we live in. We can fill our minds with positive suggestions, and confidence and constructive suggestion are key to changing our mindset to a more powerful and beneficial attitude.

Hypnotherapy As a therapy, hypnotism is to be used when other treatments fail or in conjunction with diet changes or other improvements. Hypnotherapy is no cure all, and should be viewed as a last resort for ailments. There are some types of conditions that are benefited more than others by hypnotherapy. Self-hypnosis can be used to put yourself to sleep at night, making it a wonderfully convenient sleep aid for insomniacs. Smoking cessation is treated by putting negative thoughts and associations in your mind related to smoking, to replace all of the desire, attraction and joy from the bad habit. Alcoholism can be treated as well, either through progressive reduction or complete and immediate abstinence and hypnotherapy. With stuttering, patients find the reason they started stuttering and remove it from their memory. Sexual disorders, phobias and neuroses are also treated in a similar manner by hypnotism. Hypnotherapy works through regression. Hypnotism is merely a means to an end, and the person must have confident faith that they will improve their condition for it to help them. Other organic issues that can benefit from hypnotherapy are chronic headaches caused by stress and tension, abdominal

People who suffer from chronic headaches caused by stress and tension, abdominal pain caused by anxiety, ovarian pain (PMS), neuralgic and rheumatic pain, nausea, lack of appetite, warts, eczema and other skin conditions can all benefit by hypnosis. Sum of it All Hypnotism and self-hypnotism is an ancient menta therapy still used today by people all across the world. By understanding and practicing this therapy, more medical conditions, mental illnesses and nerve disorders have hope to be cured that are otherwise left untreatable. This book describes five methods used by hypnotists in detail as well as detailing the true dangers of hypnotism. Finally, the actual act of hypnotizing is given, with experiments listed to conduct as a “beginner” hypnotist. Slater finishes up with the ten cardinal rules for all hypnotism that summarizes the art.

Mastery of Self Frank C. Haddock This book is a lesson plan for learning the art of successmagnetism in conjunction with other forms of magnetism. Haddock states that it takes a constructive effort and plenty of time to discover the mastery of self. The first principle that is introduced is “the best use of self demands that it be understood.” There are four “pyramids” that Haddock introduces in this book. Once you can interpret the pyramids then you will understand the following: 1.

Magnetic concentration

2.

The relation of the divisions of self to the whole self

3.

A better understanding of your personality

4.

The supreme importance of psychic righteousness The Four Pyramids Here are the four pyramids:

1.

Pyramid of Physical Health: Harmony, Exercise,

Recreation, Air, Sleep, Water, Food, Regularity, Digestion, Cleanliness, Economy, and Scientific Body-Building and Using 2.

Pyramid of Physical Magnetism: Will, Muscular

Development, Nervous Condition, Inner Energy, Responsiveness, Self Control, Staying Power, Health, Body Tone, Personal Characteristics, and Physical Characteristics 3.

Pyramid of Moral Health: Peace, Will, Righteousness,

Love, Knowledge, Faith, Hope, Courage, Body-Health, Right Heredity, Right Environment, and Right Training 4.

Pyramid of Personal Magnetism: Will, Alertness,

Fidelity, Hope, Courage, Confidence, Honor, Thought, Faith in System, Physical Basis: Health, and Body-Magnetism The author discusses a whole multitude of equations for combinations of pyramids that create the perfect scenarios for optimizing on different needs. This gets really confusing, but in the end, Haddock summarizes possible conclusions that are beneficial. First, physical health is absolutely necessary for physical magnetism. The same goes for psychic righteousness (health) and psychic magnetism. Psychic magnetism is “indispensable to best physical magnetism” but physical magnetism is “not wholly indispensable to psychic magnetism.” Someone with perfect psychic magnetism must incorporate health and physical magnetism as well as psychic righteousness. Magnetism is a Slow Growth

The ideal person is to be whole, all inclusive, and at our best at all times. However, in order to achieve our ultimate success we must have some degree of personal magnetism to help us in dealing with other people. However, this process takes much inner strength and determination, and will take you a minimum of a year to truly gain all the necessary knowledge to better your life and condition. Thankfully, it does not matter how smart or dumb you are because you must only be persistent to succeed. “Success-magnetism is personal magnetism intelligently multiplied.” The first duty of man is practical sanity. We have to be mentally fit in order to have our whole self in top condition. Magnetism is sanity at work. 19 Laws of Magnetic Development The author has listed 19 laws that should be interpreted by the individual in accordance to their needs. They instruct the person on how magnetism develops within one's life. This is really a time-line for the development of personal magnetism that has been listed in other New Thought Movement texts, but Haddock really defines each part of the total system of magnetic development. Starting with the discovery of one's magnetism to a needful situation to use it in, and then into concentration, and an affirmation to what you want to happen, he gives this process more depth for the individual to mold

their own situation around. Here they are listed by key words: 1. Discovery of endowment 2. Difficult environment 3. Magnetic intention 4. Free adjustment 5. Concentration 6. Purpose-ideals 7. Receptivity 8. Demand 9. Affirmation 10. Psychic energy 11. Self-control 12. Magnetic energy 13. Self-valuation 14. Use of self 15. Magnetic heroism 16. Action and reaction 17. Recovery 18. Reproduction 19. Superiority of culture Next, Haddock lists the Laws of Magnetic Action. There

are 31 of these laws, and no need to list each one out, as they are similar to the laws of development in they are a sequence of events that occur within magnetic action and should be read by an individual and applied as an exercise. However, the 17 law of Harmonic Conditions makes an interesting statement; “Magnetism enhances through beauty of personal surroundings - in cleanliness, order, adornment, art, literature, music and the like.” Law 21, Magnetic Handling of Self is the “attitude of magnetism - the magnetic intention and psychic pose--'I stand positively magnetic toward this person or this situation...' and when this phrase is repeated in your mind constantly, “ultimately instructs in all the arts of magnetic self-handling through the law of auto-suggestion, and realizes in practical form its own ideals.” The 24 “General Life Principles” are wellwritten supreme laws applying to magnetism that should be respected by everyone. FEAR Fear is foe to mastery and freedom, and is self-imposed. Use the affirmation, “I am courage! Whatever betides, the true self of me demands courage.” The lessons listed here end the fear by “tearing away bond after bond of habit, thought and action which have smothered your true, inner self.” Fear-feeling should be banned from life by convincing ourselves that the

White Life surrounds the true self protecting it. Fear is an impulse, a habit, and a disease that is created by insanity, and “a creature of imagination.” Fear should be replaced by reason. The causes of fear are “weak reason, uncontrollable imagination, want of self-control and ill-health.” The ability to destroy fear depends on three factors: 1.

General tone of the individual

2.

Soul's power of will

3.

Development and balance of reason Every individual must remove fear from their psyche if

they expect to become a true master of self, and truly be free from their self in the search for inner truth. Culture of Courage Is the world becoming a better place? The author states his belief that the world is adjusting to one supreme truth and reality, and that this is necessary if we want to find and know the truth. This adjustment lies on a prayer, the request for truth, and it is an assurance since it expects the truth. “The world no longer merely asks for truth; it harmonizes with nature and life, and so, appropriates.” Make this lifelong affirmation: “In Harmony I appropriate all Good.” The results of

this affirmation are seen in benevolence and charity, business, education, government and religion. The universal breath of life consists of two general activities: denial and affirmation. Courage is denial of fear and becomes self-confidence. The courage affirmation is “I am the spirit of the soul. Harmonic with the Perfect Whole.” People deny when they question what is given as the facts or the truth. When you deny something you have to make an affirmation for something better to replace it. Every single person is entitled to health, happiness and power. Evil is “a derangement in an individual life, induced by self and world-thought gone wrong” and even though it is very real in existence it is not necessary or required, and therefore can be taken away and destroyed completely from all existence. Disease is the “dis-easement” of the body, while health means cooperation between all physical movements and universal forces. Our mind is any collection of powers used by self. The spirit is the real self that builds body, and spirituality is the highest state as we search for the White Life. Happiness is consciously harmonized with good, true and beautiful. Poise: How To Attain It D. Starke Poise is a power that we all have within us, yet most people never fully develop this power which can be used in gaining success. Principles of poise are will, reason, value of oneself, power to resist self-love, despising conditions that are unacceptable for humanity, free from vanity, and a definite and clear ambition. The people who understand and entertain poise as beneficial to their success in their daily lives, have accepted that poise is necessary to succeed at anything. As this is the dream of most people, yet only a reality for a select few, poise should become more important to more people. However, only those people who have truly mastered the concept and application of willpower will be able to achieve poise, as it requires resolute force and the correction of faults in the personality. Do not think so much about oneself when in a social situation; focus on what the other person is saying with true concentration. Put the ego in check, avoid a biased viewpoint, repress vanity and resist self-love. This will ensure that we are consciously involved in the conversation, and will be an application of great poise.

Achieving Poise As one works to become successful and they begin to correct their poise to become more professional and sociable, he or she must actually take the steps to change themselves. We cannot just expect to sit back dreaming of becoming someone great and with highly respected character. This is our responsibility and life lesson, and must be achieved on our own. Realize that when other people are snubbing or criticizing your good will and actions this demonstrates that their “envy and malice are nothing but homage rendered to superiority.” Opposite of those suffering from egotism, timidity is a casualty of poise. By being afraid to make a stand, share an opinion or meet new people, the shy person is missing out on living. He is failing to make the most of the use of poise, and through inattention, will inevitably lose the entire framework for poise from his character. Instead of becoming stronger, he finds himself more stressed out over the least stressful situations, and misfortunes of all kinds are more unbearable all of the time. Hypochondriacs would fit into this category, as these people suffer from anticipation of catastrophes, and create pain within their minds. Anyone who lives their life in fear or paranoid ideals should consider developing poise as a wonderful alternative to the darkness they call day.

How to Gain Poise People with poise find they have no problem speaking in public, and will never be found blushing from embarrassment. When faced with a difficult situation, the person with poise will soon find a new solution without worry or fear from failure. Modesty is an enemy of poise. All the treasures, works of art and elaborate masterpieces that have been created by the artistic, intelligently free, creative minds would have never been created by anyone who is the servant of modesty and conformity. The fundamental principle of acquiring poise is this: Overcoming timidity. Being that timidity is a disease, one must treat it just as one would any other illness. The shy will be denied social prestige, which is necessary with obtaining poise. Claustrophobia, writers’ block or cramp, erythrophobia and stuttering are examples of organic disease brought on by timidity. There are four series of physical exercises to help acquire poise: 1.

Breathing - well-directed and carefully practiced

breathing makes the heartbeat stronger, and improves lung function, Practicing this deep, conscious breathing five minutes

a day either lying down or standing will give these benefits. 2.

Training of the Eye - invaluable for acquiring poise using

magnetic gaze. 3.

The Motions, the Carriage - this is clumsiness and

awkwardness and can be fixed by exercise - by walking with a perfectly postured frame and arch for five minutes a day. 4.

Speaking - “eloquence…is one of the gifts of the man of

poise”; due to the physical poise, speaking will be an effect of poise and can be exercised by stretching the jaw open each morning until it gets tired. Composure should be the first achievement on the pathway to attaining poise. Repeat, “I am composed. I propose to be composed. I am composed!” in order to gain composure. Resolution is necessary to strengthen willpower. Once a resolution, or commitment is made, it must be carried through to finish. Willpower is necessary for poise. And remember, “speech is silver, but silence is golden.” When in doubt in a situation, keep this in mind and remain poise. Is this Program for Me? The acquisition of poise is a character trait that should be understood by everyone. However, those who are weak in willpower or too shy to be socially accepted will be unable attain poise. This program is mainly for those who wish to

succeed in life and make great accomplishments for humanity. Sum of it All Poise is the disposition that is most favorable to make dreams a reality, and is necessary for anyone wishing for success. This book applies concepts of willpower, magnetic gaze, breathing and walking exercises for the acquisition of poise for anyone reading. Poise can help anyone achieve anything they want in life, however, like anything that is truly achieved, one must work consistently and consciously to gain poise and is not something everyone may be able to do. Therefore, only the truly successful can gain the knowledge for poise, and put it into action for success.

Power Through Repose Annie Payson Call This book, “Power through Repose,” is a guide for learning how to truly relax in a manner that is most beneficial to the human body, soul and mind. Repose is defined as the act of resting, free from worries and peace of mind - something everyone could enjoy and appreciate - and this book provides the manual for gaining power through tranquility, or repose. Americanitis Beginning with the proper care of the body, most Americans, as stated by Call, have the worst cases of nervous tension and this is evident in the booming pharmaceutical industry, especially with their prescriptions for nervousness or anxiety. The reason people suffer from nervous frustrations is because they are being disobedient to the laws of Nature. Overwork and lack of rest and relaxation are noted as the fault of the victim and therefore, they can be corrected by learning how to relax, getting a good night's rest and stepping back to evaluate our work situation. Prevention should be taken instead of harsh and costly medications. “Look out, not in; look up, not down; lend a hand” cures Americanitis. If Americans who were

suffering would lend to this example their nervous tendencies would disappear allowing for power through peacefulness. Sleep Sleep, in particular, is necessary for successful bodily functioning. Even though we may “sleep” at night, we are unable to fully benefit from a full night's rest because for most it is impossible to relax the tensions from the body without a directed effort. Natural sleep allows the conscious mind to refresh itself, and as children this gave us our daily strength and required power for physical growth. We must sleep enough hours to fully rest our body as is required, and most people are aware of how many hours they must have to be fully rested for the next day. Before sleep we must clear our minds, relax our muscles and concentrate on sleeping. Concentrate Concentration is the use of the brain, and should be utilized every time we read or think about anything. Rather than multi-tasking, we must be focused on our task at that moment. Listening only requires the brain and ears, yet most people are thinking about what they are doing for dinner instead of concentrating on the conversation. Then, our

intellect starts in on us and we get nervous as we start to try too hard - never try too hard to force your brain or eyes to learn. This will evolve through concentration and continued efforts. Speech “The old philosopher said the seat of the soul was in the diaphragm. However that may be, the word begins there, soul and body; but you squeeze the life out of it in your throat, and so your words are born dead.” Whenever someone speaks, they typically have some sort of nervousness manifest in their body and release, such as waving their hands, raising and opening their eyes, and even touching the other person. Yet all of this is counterproductive to the main goal of speaking to get the message across. Some people like to shout or talk with a nasally tone - we should always check our tone and “how we propel our voice” because this tends to also cause problems. The nervous system and voice constantly react on each other, so keep this in mind during moments of rage or frustration or excitement. “Take the bone and flesh sound from your voice,” meaning be easy on

the body as we speak. People with nerves need to use a quiet, mellow voice in order to convey to others and themselves that they really are calm. Other noteworthy points in this book where that whenever we write, we should never hold the pencil with tension, but instead with the loose, relaxed muscles in the hand. There was also mention on the proper technique of lifting, which should be done with the legs. When lifting, thought should be given to lift with power instead of strain, since the leg muscles have much more power than the back. Pain and Suffering The book contends that God wants everyone to obey the laws of Nature, but if we fail then we will most definitely suffer. It is our fault that we are in pain and miserable, and it is our job to make our lives better. The secret is to use muscular instead of nervous force - direct with our directing power; work with our working power. Walking is the most natural exercise for our body, and of course, we should use our muscles instead of nerves to walk. Pain, on the other hand, is not natural, and it comes from an abnormal state somewhere in the nervous system. Most

people react to pain through their nervous system. This makes the nerves more tender and sensitive as the pain continues to grate on them. Pain is a sign to let go of something, not to hold on to it, and we should do this to end the feelings of pain. For instance, whenever we are going to the dentist, we are racked with nervous anticipation and work ourselves into a frenzy for no reason at all. This awakens all of our senses and nerves, leaving one more exhausted than simply necessary. Emotions are a Sham? Emotions are imaginary. However, as anyone who has experienced a panic attack or a fainting spell will testify, emotions have real effects on the body. People who are lead by their emotions soon burn out from the effort and develop a stone heart. There are two types of emotions – real emotions that increase the power of wholesome use to others, and sham emotions that cause a loss of strength. Mistaken sympathy is often given to people who are hurt, but this will cause even more nervous strain, making us increase their suffering. When someone becomes emotional, we should be indifferent, and while listening not allow the emotional impact to have an effect on ourselves. Keeping emotions buried away is also dangerous

because eventually the person will blow up with a bursting of repressed feelings. Bursts of anger such as temper flares are the failed attempt to control a temper. Let the temper go and you will remain calm. Self-consciousness and personal annoyance are an extent of nervous tension, and various forms of egotism create extreme nervous strain. These nervous ticks are inherited and once they are acknowledged they should be forgotten because “nature shows us constantly that behind every action there should be great repose.” Think of how simple and free a baby is, who has yet to “learn” from watching others how to respond with nervousness. Natural repose is gained by relaxing with a clear head, quiet mind and obedient muscles capable of doing all the physical labor. True relaxation is achievable by lying flat on the back on a hard surface and give way to the body as much as possible so that it seems to meld into the ground. Do this daily to truly receive relaxation for the body. The power to “let go” causes an increasing sensitiveness to all tension, which as unpleasant as it always is to find mistakes of any kind in ourselves, brings a very happy result in the end. Deep breathing exercises help the body relax. To do this start by letting the body relax and then take longer, deeper

breaths with your eyes closed as your body starts to relax. True equilibrium with tension and relaxing leads to a more wholesome harmony of rhythmic life. The object is to let the muscles do the work naturally so the body can become more free and agile. Think about how the neck is often filled with the most tension causing headaches and neck pain. This is hard to overcome and release the tension here because it is at the base of the brain that has been overstimulated. Concentration of the mind is required as it focuses the force being exasperated by the body and mind. Normal exercise stimulates the mind whereas overexertion steadily weakens mental power. This can be testified by people who “burn out” in their careers even though they have a passion for them whenever they are overexerting their energies too soon. Worry also causes brain tension and should be shunned from the mind. People who are finding themselves burning out in their daily affairs should follow these steps to prevent such a catastrophe: 1. Trust in one's own capacity for freedom and quiet (gain self- confidence) 2. Seek equilibrium and balance between work and relaxation 3. Focus and improve on your work daily

For people who are finding difficulties in their personal affairs, be quiet and love others. Do not meddle in others personal business and leave them alone to do their own life's work. Everyone must do their own learning and living, and by “bothering” these people we are really being selfish and do not truly have the others best intentions at heart. However, it is hard to leave others alone when our self is not loved, so make sure to love thyself first by taking care of our own body, mind and soul. We should be our own focus. While it is crucial that we are able to free our body before directing our will on others, development takes time and is a step-by-step process that cannot be taken lightly or underestimated. We must erase previous impressions. This can be achieved through concentration on what we are thinking about, and pushing all other tendencies to the wayside. Repose and a free body and mind lead to an “opening of all facilities for better use.” Is this Program for Me? People that suffer from migraines, anxiety and nervous tendencies, stress-related illnesses and certain mental illnesses would definitely benefit from this program. daily tasks without harming our bodies, all kinds of people would learn how to take better care of themselves. Also, nurses and other medical professionals can benefit from using this more integrative medicinal approach to solving medical conundrums that are more mental than organic. Sum of it All The “Power through Repose” is a practical guide for teaching everyone how to use their body as it was meant to be used, instead of using nerves to complete the labor. Once a person realizes the effects of overtaxing the nerves and how this is so unnatural, they can begin to use their body in a more effectual manner. By providing actual relaxation techniques, and through the use of deep breathing and concentration of our efforts, anyone interested in making their bodies work for them more efficiently will be able to find the answer in this book.

Practical Mental Influence William Atkinson “Practical Mental Influence” begins with an introduction to the use of vibrations by the mind to control or influence others. Atkinson states that this has been going on since the beginning of time with the use of power for both good and evil. Historically, the field of science has been divided into material and natural sciences, where the materialists see “mind as just a blip in the system that is involuntary and untamed,” and naturalists study the effects of electricity, heat, light, gravity and more on the mind, believing it is of great use and influence of our body. Atkinson states that thought transference does exist and is accounted for by science. Physical science says everything in the world is manifesting vibrations that are vital for a material universe. Vibrations are constantly present in all forms of energy, light, heat, electricity, magnetism. And, just as we can distinguish tone and pitch of music and nature, our internal organs do the same with vibration at a wide range. There is only one truth on the three planes: spiritual, mental and physical. While we are familiar with spiritual in the form of religion, and physical as in the blood and muscles in our bodies, mental is described as a close resemblance

between electrical and magnetic energy. The author states that the scientific facts one uses pertaining to electrical and magnetic energy can be used to study mental energy. Here is how it works. The temperature of the brain fluctuates with feeling and thought, and energy that is released must go out of the brain just as light, heat, electricity, magnetism and radioactivity do. Thought is equal to induction. “We sum up, therefore, our preceding observations by the conclusion that one mind can act at a distance upon another, without the habitual medium of words, or any other visible means of communication...The action of one human being upon another, from a distance, is a scientific fact.” Flammarion (French scientist) When we think a thought, energy is generated and flows from the brain as a wave of mental energy, spreading into the environment in proportion to the strength of the thought as a thought-vibration. These vibrations have “the property of awakening similar vibrations in the minds of other persons coming within their field of force.” Also, the thought-force exists long after the thought has left, which could explain why some people get a certain feeling in particular cities or places around the world. Thoughts and feelings are contagious, because of the Law of Vibration and mental induction, allowing

23 Self Help Classics

them to seep into the force fields and minds of other people. Therefore, we can obtain mental influence over others. Induction is when mental energy is transferring from one person to another. An example that everyone has experienced at some point in their lives would be the tension that can be felt in certain social situations or when a particular individual enters the room. Better yet, think of whenever you have been in the presence of someone famous or powerful. Notice how the energy felt during this time. Also, a good will individual is best to be around socially, as you will gain some of the good mental energy that radiates from this person helping to strengthen yourself. This can be of great benefit for leaders such as presidents and bosses, orators, actors, preachers and teachers. How would the power of mental influence and energy work with two people if one person is enamored while the other person despises, and they are both sending strong vibrations? The two would be neutral, canceling each other out unless one person is stronger. If the stronger person persists in using mental influence against the will of the other to win their love, they would succeed if only momentarily, as they would eventually lose strength.

Thinking people are the only ones that are linked into the stream of conscious living wills, giving them a strong inductive effect on others' minds. However, groups that are made up of a large number of people who have the same thinking will produce power by their combined effort. “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” Think about your actions and character, and leave the negatives buried deep in the sand. The act of using mental influence involves vibrations of willpower, masterfulness, fascination, and attraction, and these can be sent by someone attempting to sway another person's desires, or change their opinions by conquering their willpower. There are two main steps to manifesting mental influence. First concentrate, and second, use mental imagery. However, most people cannot concentrate well enough to attempt this. You can practice concentrating by thinking only of one subject or by completely tuning that subject out for a set period of time, and the mind will work to begin action. “The secret of mind control lies in the control of attention, which lies in the exercise of will.” If you want mental influence you must focus your mental force to a specific point.

Steps to Mental Influence Cultivate voluntary attention. Create a movie screening room in your mind and visualize the situation unfolding as you want it to occur, and be as detail-specific as possible. It has been said that NBA superstar Michael Jordan mentally mapped out the victory of each basketball game by sitting on the sidelines and concentrating on shooting baskets instead of actually playing the game. There are two types of mental influence: 1.

Fascination

2.

Hypnotism While the book is not very clear on fascination, it is

described as being the manifesting of mental influence without passing it to someone else, while hypnotism manifests and passes mental influence. One method outlined in the book if you want someone to like you, is to form a thought “that person likes me” and then project the thought “you like me you like me very much” to that person. Just make certain your intentions are pure and honorable. Hypnotic Influence Mesmerism, or hypnotism, was introduced by Frederick

Anton Mesmer who was a practitioner of mental influence from 1750 to 1800. Hypnosis works on the body by using the ether to travel between people. An astral-tube or “psychic wire” serves as the tunnel for the mental energy. The way to fight fear of some things is to create “a burning desire for the opposite thing.” The characteristics associated the most with mental influence are inward strength, attractive, influence over others and an ardent desire to draw people to them. Remember, good thoughts are attracted to good minds. The way to keep safe from others is to keep your mind pure and unselfish. If you are having problems with certain people in your life, say to yourself “I am an Immortal Spirit, using the will within my ego. Let me alone - I cast off your influence by the power of my spirit.” Next, “treat” them in your mind by sending thoughts of love and knowledge to remove their ignorance and selfishness. Finally, put the person out of your mind, and do not fear or hate them any longer. They no longer exist in your mind. You are indifferent, and they no longer have control or influence over you. Is this Program for Me? Teachers, orators, actors, presidents, bosses, and preachers can all benefit from this program of learning to use mental influence because you are able to learn how to influence

one person as well as a crowd. Some people are already using mental influence on others without realizing that this power is beyond them and can be controlled for their benefit. They would learn a lot about themselves from this book. Anyone that has had problems with other negative people harassing them can use the power of blocking mental influence to keep their negative energy away. Sum of it All This book is written to inform people of the power of practical mental influence for positive use in serving humanity. By starting with scientific proof and physical evidence, the nonbeliever has the chance to understand what mental influence really is. Then, by applying the scientific evidence with real life scenarios, people can begin to accept the use of mental influence. Next, we are given steps to manifesting mental influence, the practical uses in the different types of mental influence such as hypnotism, that all explain how we can gain influence over one person or a group of people, and what the pros and cons are for keeping our influence positive and for the benefit of all involved. This book provides an overview of mental influence for the practical person, as well as details about practicing this mind influencing power.

The Science of Getting Rich Wallace Wattles An author of the New Thought Movement, Wallace Wattles wrote “The Science of Getting Rich,” published in 1910, as a self-improvement tool to be utilized by anyone who earnestly desires to be rich. Starting with the mindset of getting rich, Wattles states that “it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich,” and that the ultimate goal of all life is development. So, based on these ideals, every man and woman deserves to be rich, and if they accept this fact they will be rich providing they follow the laws of nature. All people are supposed to be successful because that is the law, the correct path. And we are all expected to desire, as the desire to see a certain result is what causes people to make their decisions. Wattles believes that we need delicious and nutritious food, comfortable clothing and a warm home, as well as the right to live free from manual labor, complete with plenty of rest and recreation. This book describes the scientific process of acquiring them. Mind, Soul and Body Wattles explains the science behind getting rich, stating that everyone lives for three motives:

1.

Mind

2.

Soul

3.

Body These three entities are developed by using them, and in

order to be able to fully develop oneself it takes a great deal of money. This is the reason people should want to become rich in terms of financial wealth - so that they are able to become rich in mind, soul and body. Therefore, there is “nothing wrong in wanting to get rich.” “The Science of Getting Rich” explains how this differs between religious doctrines and worldviews that are persistent in today's society. One example Wattles describes is the use of poverty by government to control people, which is unfortunately still happening today. In order to feed our mind, we need to set aside time to read intellectually stimulating material, spend more time traveling to observe other cultures and create friendships with a great network of different people. Beautiful sculptures and portraits should line our walls, and we should be educated so that we are able to appreciate and understand art. If we are to feed our soul, we must love, and “love is denied expression by poverty.” This is seen in the number of failed marriages due to money issues. Gift-giving is our greatest joy in life, just as long

as the giver is honest in their motives. As for feeding our body, everyone always jumps straight to what we are eating and they overlook the outside and our appearance to others. This is just as important for that very reason that our body is the first thing seen by others. It is a direct reflection of our inner self. So if we want to be seen as healthy and happy, we should dress comfortably and in clothing that is representative of our inner self. Our body must have nutritious foods or else the chemical effects of foods that are popular today can wreak havoc on our systems. We should be eating the most nutritious foods we can afford. Road to Riches The method to become rich means you must do things a certain way. This book goes into great detail about the certain way, and what not to do if you want to get rich. Do not go get an education or learn a talent, and then assume you will become rich overnight without any extra effort. Trying to get rich by being thrifty and stingy does not work either. The way to get rich involves social interaction and a mind that can think. Anyone can get rich because it comes from thoughts of the mind. Wattles continues with steps and assumptions about this idea of getting rich. The idea is that every thought is really

formless substance that can become real and physical if we concentrate on the idea intensely and for a length of time. He uses science and the laws of nature to secure his premise. Religious dogma is questioned as Wattles professes that doubt is the same thing as sin, and that God or any supernatural Deity does not want us to be poor in order to get to heaven. In fact, Wattles wrote that God or the Higher Being wants us to be rich because He exists through us, and as we live happy and peaceful lives, so does He. “The Science of Getting Rich” has a positivist message, and extends that no one should want to get rich for personal ambitions, fame or just to help others. Getting rich should be a means to a purpose, and simply wanting to be rich is not enough. Once you become rich you are expected to eat, drink, travel and spend your wealth learning and sharing love and kind deeds. In fact, God does not require you to sacrifice your life for others. The author explains how competing for riches is a poor choice, since people typically lie, cheat and take advantage of others in competition of any kind, and this goes against Wattle's ideals. Instead, people are born with the need to create by using their mind in order to become successful, and rich. It is not necessary to beat people out of something in business. The principle of advancement says to treat a business

as if it were a never-ending ladder that everyone is constantly climbing, and moving up in their career. Gratitude Gratitude is a substantial concept as “the mental attitude of gratitude draws the mind into closer touch with the source from which the blessings come,” the perfect unity of mind with God. The Law of Gratitude is the natural principle that action and reaction are always equal, and in opposite directions. Without gratitude, it must follow that you will be unhappy and dissatisfied with your life, and this will be carried out in your thoughts thus reverberating the problem of a miserable existence. This could be seen as some form of depression within the mind. You must always be grateful for good things that come your way and give thanks for them. Be positive and do not dwell or focus on the bad stuff in your life if you intend on changing them. Poverty If the task of getting rich is to work then you must be bold in your statement of becoming rich, and you must make a clear and specific mental image in your mind. Those people who can develop such an image and can act with productive and fervent

desire will achieve their goal. In order for the desire to manifest itself into the physical world, you must have total faith that it will become yours, as even the least bit of doubt will grow. Charity work is considered inappropriate at this time for those wanting to get rich, because any association with poverty reduces the amount of effort to get rich. The author continues that to end poverty anywhere in the world, all we have to do is to increase the number of people who use purpose with faith to get rich, or follow the instructions from this book. The poverty stricken need inspiration in life in order to overcome their obstacles. The author also discusses the evolutionary process in world order, emphasizing we should not procrastinate. Every minute of every day should be savored as the most important moment of our lives and given just as much zeal and dedication. All of our energy needs to be as focused as possible to make change, and this is where we evolve into a more intellectual and harmonious human being. Is this Program for ME? Sum of it All “The Science of Getting Rich” begins with the belief that everyone has the right and responsibility to become rich financially so that they are able to be rich in all other aspects of their life. Through the holistic approach of studying the mind, body and soul and learning how they interact, Wattles takes this knowledge and has written a guide to becoming rich. The Law of Gratitude provides the natural law in which to anchor this self-development method. However, it must be noted that anyone who uses this book to become rich must follow the instructions and guidelines. Otherwise, failure and poverty will be the great success rather than riches. Wanting to be rich to fulfill personal fame or glory is discouraged, but the use of this book to gain riches for personal success is expected.

Self-Development And The Way To Power L.W. Rogers The book “Self-Development and the Way to Power” contains a powerfully positive message. The words written here are uplifting and inspirational. “Happiness is the product of wisdom” starts the conversation. We suffer because we “lack spiritual illumination to find out the cause of our suffering.” Why are we harmed by the words or actions of other people? It is because sometime in our past we have sent harmful thoughts or made bad plans in our minds, and whether or not we acted on them, as part of nature's law once something starts it tends to accelerate and build in momentum unless consciously cast aside. Everything happens for a reason, and if we want to make this happen in our favor, we must learn how to control ourselves. Sixth Sense We are responsible for a conscious evolution, and we must become aware that we are steadily growing and changing in every thought we create if we want to master our destiny. This “sixth sense” as the author describes, is not made complete

and permanent but instead is flexible and forever changing. We have the opportunity to control our circumstances by using only our mind, our sixth sense. However, we must use this strength, and just as with building a muscle, it will grow stronger and become more accessible to us. Rogers states nature's Law of Economy in which nature punishes inaction with atrophy. He follows with the example of a hermit crab that has a soft delicate outer protective layer because it lazily used empty sea shells rather than growing its' own home for many years until finally devolution took place. By failing to use our own power we lose it. No man can avoid life by choosing to end it himself through suicide, states Rogers, implying reincarnation of the soul. This is against the law of nature, and since the body only houses the soul temporarily, killing the physical being does not kill the soul. We must obtain spiritual illumination to allow our soul to peacefully rest. However, there are certain moral qualities that we must discover before we can find any true spiritual illumination, genuine wisdom or moral virtues. The process of living our lives provides us with the instructions that will lead us to inner harmony, and this cannot be simply read from someone else's words, as it is within all our experiences and reshaped daily.

Three Steps to Self-Development A step-by-step approach to beginning this lifelong journey is a three point process. 1.

Learn what mental and moral qualities you need

2.

Figure out how to gain them

3.

Work with intellect and diligence to gain those qualities It is important to remember that your body is your

instrument. Rogers states that we are given this body to use for our life journey, and we should mold it and use it to our advantage. Successful self-development consists of three parts: 1.

Ardent desire

2.

Iron will

3.

Alert intelligence No matter what we attempt to accomplish, if we are not

willing to push ourselves and if we lack passion we will not achieve our goals. After becoming conscious of the invisible world, people are capable of consciously conversing with the dead including those we knew such as friends and family members. The connection allows us to know for certain that we survive our bodies here

on earth. Rogers also contends that willpower is essential for the successful, as well as determination and perseverance. Whenever we are mentally tired or having writer's block, this is typically not the case. Really, the only thing that can be tired is our physical body, as our “self” is never tired, and never rests until we die or allow it to atrophy. We have to be on constant alert to our physical and social environments as “a person who fails in attention misses the purpose of life and throws away valuable time and opportunity.” Concentration is key as scatterbrains tend to throw all of their energy about, and fail to focus and achieve real success. Get up at the same early hour every morning and work steady and purposefully throughout the day. Also, good motives must be internalized and not just put on for display to the outside world. Keen Intelligence Keen intelligence means being a participant in your life and not just a bystander watching the world flash before your eyes. You are to read news articles and literature with discrimination based on what you already know and researching to learn what you do not understand. Never simply accept the opinions of someone else as truth just because it is published or written in a book. However, you should read quality material and be restrictive on what you are spending

your time reading. Rogers states we should observe and study all those around us, and travel to study people of other places. Sociology is an example of a scholarly subject that deals with understanding how people act and why we do what we do through systematic, scientific study and observation. The imagination is the birthplace of all thoughts, and it would do us good to exercise this mental muscle. Meditation is the way that ego manifests into reality, and Rogers goes into detail about how to start a meditation routine of daily exercise. Self-improvement is change, and is an evolutionary process that is difficult, time consuming and requires consistent progression; it is not going to happen over night or by simply reading a book. The person must apply what they have learned in this book if they are to truly find success in life. Is this Program for ME? Anyone that suffers from addictions can benefit from this self-improvement tool. Addictions are fueled by hatred, and Rogers states that in order to be free from an addiction we should not hate the object we are addicted to, but instead remain indifferent. The hatred links the addict's mind back to the addiction, making it impossible to quit. Considering that

Sum of it All “Self-Development and the Way to Power” is a tool to weld the power of achievement on a personal level. To be successful, self-development must include three qualities: ardent desire, strong will and keen intellect. After deciding what mental and moral qualities are to be achieved, the person must figure out how to obtain them. Using intellectual powers, patience and diligence, the person will eventually gain those qualities. This book is a wonderfully written flow chart for those who want to improve their circumstances.

Success Lord Beaverbrook The “Success” guide was first printed in a local newspaper, and everyone enjoyed the editorials so much that they were gathered and printed as a book. This book is a philosophy of success and explains all facets of the double-edged sword that is success. Beaverbrook defines success, how one achieves success and how to enjoy it once it is obtained. The essential qualities necessary for true success are: 1.

Judgment - the power to assimilate knowledge and use it

2.

Industry - in true form, concentration; it can be acquired

but not squandered 3.

Health - the foundation to judgment and industry; without

health we are nothing Happiness is next to success. The three qualities of happiness are: 1.

To do justly

2.

To love mercy

3.

To work humbly

However, happiness is variable to the experiences of every person. For example, some people that have achieved great success are still miserable due to too much ambition, selfishness or an uneasy conscious. A person cannot be happy in their success if they doubt their own justice. Anyone that is achieving success should have mercy for the underdog, as well as being merciful to their own meager beginnings. Beaverbrook states “an inner sense of gratitude for the scheme of things, finding expression in outward action, and therefore, assuring its possessor of an abiding happiness,” is the key to meshing happiness and success. We can have both happiness and success, if we are conscious of the effort it takes to achieve them. Humility versus Arrogance Humility is the most difficult attribute to obtain because with success comes courage, struggle and conquest, and each of these invites arrogance. One type of humility insists that the successful must acknowledge younger aspiring people moving into their footsteps, and by refusing to do so is a clear indication of jealousy resulting in the successful person failing to become truly happy. In order to gain perpetual satisfaction, a person should “be able to practice courage without arrogance and to walk humbly without fear.”

Luck Beaverbrook spends time discussing luck, particularly any role it plays in lasting success. Luck as he states is the belief in imaginary “tendencies of chance” to lead to events that are continuously favorable or unfavorable, and has nothing to do with skill or knowledge. And just as with any game of chance, with luck eventually the odds will be stacked against the person depending upon it. Anyone who truly intends on succeeding must banish luck from their psyche. Steps to Success 1.

Accept all opportunities that lead to possibly greater

things. 2.

Develop the industry to increase the chances of success.

3.

When judgment or experience is lacking a person may

choose a wrong path but will gain knowledge from the experience. “Believe in industry, not in fortune, and in judgment rather than in chance,” states Beaverbrook. Restraint and moderation are keys in retaining success, and should be maintained while enjoying the fruits of success. Every person using restraint and moderation will keep his judgment intact,

his nerves sound and his mind secure by self-discipline. The Price of Money Money has no value expect for the character it creates in the making, and the self-expression of the individuality in its use. Other than this, money means nothing. This can be acknowledged with those who have achieved great fortune yet refuse to burden their descendents with great inheritance, as they realize the benefit of being made to struggle with only brains and character, creating a more successful and beneficial humanity. If someone receives something they do not earn earnestly, then they will lose it sure enough or squander their own lives away. The art of making money requires resolution, concentration, economy and self-control - all of which also create success and happiness. Beaverbrook states that the first 10,000 pounds are where the blood, sweat and tears are used to truly gain success. At the end of the day, money is worth having, though, and “money which is striven for brings with it real qualities in life” because money is what almost every single person wants the most creating the most severe competition. “Money is nothing but the fruit of resolution and intellect applied to the affairs of the world,” and we all know that it takes money to buy necessities as well as luxuries, both of which are required to sustain success, happiness and health.

Education For those who are unable to achieve a formal, expensive Ivy League education at Yale, Oxford or some other fancy institution, do not let this take away your right to knowledge. Anyone can read any book they choose, and thereby can learn anything they can read. Just because someone is not given a formally structured education does not mean they cannot have this knowledge. The author even states that most formal educations turn out a particular type of person, and this cookie cutter personality is not the best suited for success. Many great leaders were not formally educated, including Abraham Lincoln who only received eighteen months of schooling yet went on to become one of the most successful Presidents in the U.S. Read, read, read. Read anything and everything that can be read, and read what you want to read. The simple act of reading requires and develops a use of concentration and focus that can be used in other aspects of daily life. Math and foreign languages are the two subjects that should be considered for study, as they are the most beneficial in industry. our personality. Panic is only a figment of our imagination and we should never act on it. Keep self-control and let panic pass. It is only a test of our body, soul and mind, and should be taken with a grain of salt. The world is not coming to an end, and once the panicky situation has past, we often wonder what the fuss was all about. Depression is another test of our psyche. Beaverbrook states that depression is a “wholesome corrective which Nature applies to the swollen periods of the world's affairs.” The laws of nature state that for optimism and elation are but equal parts of reaction and gloom - there cannot be all roses and cake all the time without thorns and obesity. Depression is the purge of business. During depressed times of economic recession, such as seen globally today, business needs to continue to sell, because depression is only a passing phase to weed out the unsuccessful and balance the markets. Selling is the final cure for a depression. No one should succumb to failure unless they are a criminal or wasteful person. Times of a depressed economy are periods where time is provided for restructuring, creativity and change that is necessary for the economy to continue. Is this Program for Me? depression, failure, or superstition should read this book in earnest. Business people can also benefit from understanding how the market works naturally, and can learn a lot from learning how to “go with the flow” rather than trying to force themselves into success. Anyone who thinks luck or chance is the only road to success will also benefit from understanding how this really hurts them in the long run. All in all, everyone who wishes to live a happy, healthy life should read this book. Sum of it All Beaverbrook uses simplistic everyday realities to inform readers about the laws of nature and their applications for success. Everyone strives to live happy and healthy, and to become successful. Yet, most people have no idea where to start, and often use the wrong motives and judgment in their daily affairs. Success is coincidental with health and happiness, and we really all must be successful if we wish to make the most of our lives. By living a positive, relaxed lifestyle and through earnest efforts of learning and developing our natural talents, we can achieve the greatest personal success. As we become successful, we are able to use our body, soul and mind to benefit not only ourselves but all of humanity.

Supreme Personality Fun in Living: A Doubt, Fear and Worry Cure Dr. Delmer E Croft This wonderfully written book expects to be a cure for those doubts, fears and worries that plague just about everyone. Croft begins by stating that “it is not wealth, or position that gives health and happiness.” Rather than having to live in thoughts of constant fear, anxious worrying and lack of self-confidence, we should be savoring the seconds, learning new things and applying ourselves to the service of others. Most people fail to make the most fulfilled day that they can, moving like cattle back and forth from job to home in zombie-like states. In “Supreme Personality,” the author illustrates how most of us live like zombies, that life is completely void of any substance. If the day is to be savored, we must take full advantage of our time. Don't be a Cry Baby Sometimes we feel like our world is spinning out of control, but this is never the case. We are in control of our conditions because our thoughts control our world and since we are the

ones that are in control, we can change our life if we choose to by taking action to follow through with our plan. There should be no griping or complaining about our personal miseries, as this is not only selfish, but also simply makes the situation worse. Stop wasting time in self pity and blaming other people for the situation that is all your own. You are not a victim of circumstance - you can change your life, one day at a time. Become optimistic about the present and future, and start bringing positivity into your life. Ready, Set, GO! Here are a few more key actions to take to gain a supreme personality. Stay away from people who are “dead weight” to your progress. They are holding you back in your quest. Go and become one with Mother Nature. We must “magnetize [our] body by walking thru the dew barefooted, by sleeping on the grass, or half buried in the sand,” to recharge our bodies that have been denatured. Learn to relax, remain calm and rested in all waking hours. Keep your body clean and your stomach filled with nutritious foods, for as Croft states “a bath and a haircut will change the outlook of life.” Quit all habits that make your will weakened, and please do not punish or criticize your body. Treat your body as you would a new sports car. Get plenty of physical exercise, especially outdoors

where you can re-magnetize. Think for Yourself If you are reading this then theoretically you have a brain that is cognitive - use it. The brain has a great capacity to function on most any level if applied. Concentrate on what you want, as concentration leads to action. Take time to enjoy life; serious people often have hate or anger in their lives that leads to cancers, tumors and liver trouble. Your Will is Divine Energy Everything revolves around will and this is what provides us with the drive to continue every day. “Useless people” only need a miracle to make their lives meaningful, while selfish, lazy, purposeless and aimless people should be kept at a distance as they cannot be helped if they are not willing to help themselves. Life is a constant cycle of, well, life. It does not get tired, feeble or grow old. Getting old is a habitual social expectation, and people “think” themselves to their death bed. We associate youthfulness with only being an age, a number, but when you stop growing, you die, thanks to the laws of nature. This means we all have the so-called fountain of youth within us; it only has to be given attention.

The 3 Enemies of Youth are: 1.

Worry

2.

Fear

3.

Selfishness If you can take criticism out of your life, love what you do

every day and be happy, then good cheer and prosperity will soon follow thanks to good luck. What should you do when someone dies? Grieving is unnecessary following death because when death occurs the victim only leaves the plane of earth they are still with us and are actually closer to us than ever. We are all part of the same universal energy that is in every living thing. Central Plan of Action All of your mental work should be done in the morning before noon, and manual labor such as gardening or menial house chores in the afternoon. At 3 o'clock take a rest since the mind and body are at their sluggish at this hour in the afternoon. Move your desk so that you are facing the door or entry way. Start each day with a classification of what you need to do for the day, putting big projects at the top of the list. Remember to do one thing at a time; no multi-tasking. Be neat,

orderly and simple with tasks, and keep a good humor about it. Make only plans that are original in ideas; do not waste your time on competing with others on the same goal. Remember to keep thinking positively, and make sure not to over extend yourself. Rest and recreation is important, because it reduces stress and negative energy. Only when “the mind is empty and the soul is at rest” should you go to sleep. Stop teasing, nagging or being suspicious of friends and loved ones; “you assassinate love when you ridicule it.” What you want to do is concentrate on your goals with confidence and self-reliance following your desire and ambition. This will bring you personal power, which is something we all require if we are to become a supreme personality. Bring your plan to fruition through steady construction, but keep silent, keep away from politics and cease from all bad habits. When you set out your daily classification, or to do list, stick to it in an efficient manner. Happiness will come through your success, and if you are not happy when you become successful, then “it is not success.” How are you supposed to change your preexisting negative thoughts? “If you are a coward, impersonate a hero, until you are one,” sums this process up.

Health and Exercise Prevention is the best medicine, however, for illnesses, since this prevents them from occurring in the first place. As everyone knows, exercise is important for health, as is good digestion and daily vibrations. In the book the author goes into detail with eight physical exercises that are invigorating and vital in “blood production.” The last recommended exercise, vibrating the body, is unfamiliar in most modern societies, and is not clearly explained in the book. Croft describes vibrations as being critical to digestion, and once “aroused” the vibrating should be practiced all over the body to treat obesity. If used in conjunction with a low fat, meat free, high fiber diet, vibrations should aid in intestinal troubles. However, the actual act of how to vibrate is left vague. Walking is listed as the best daily exercise that can be prescribed universally as an excellent way to stimulate the vibrations. The different areas that can benefit from using vibrations, usually in conjunction with a change in diet or other remedy are: intestines, stomach, solar plexus, torpid liver, rheumatism, constipation, headaches and biliousness (auto-intoxication and eating too much) and obesity. If you suffer from one of these ailments, keep your business to yourself. Try to keep complaints to a minimum and be on the positive side.

Remember, it could always get worse! If you suffer from depression or nervousness, get the “happy habit.” Also, try to focus on one thing at a time. Multi-tasking is to be avoided. Supreme Mental Healing Make the most supreme plans for your life, and make new plans daily, but keep certain that they are constructive and positive. Let go of the past, and converse and associate with people whom you wish to be like, i.e. confident and powerful rather than grouchy and lazy. Quit worrying about what you cannot change today this minute, and do not allow fear into your mind. Dress in light colors and try to be optimistic; depression is your enemy. Any silly problems or trivial issues you may have you should let go, and be happy rather than critical to those around you. “Get the Happy Habit” By using the power of mental healing, you can cure insomnia and bad habits (or addictions) that you have holding you back in your life from becoming a supreme personality. With insomnia, relax and drink a warm beverage before sleep such as milk or tea, and say “I will sleep” in your mind repetitively and with confidence. You will soon be asleep. For

bad habits, you must first resolve to end the bad habit and that you are free from the habit. Be mindful of how the bad habit has affected your daily life and replace the nefarious habit with ones of joy and love. Punish yourself when you slip and reward yourself when abstaining for a set period of time. When tempted, sit in silence for 10 minutes and repeat “I am Supreme” over and over. Using these methods and applying them in your life will allow you to change your personality to the most supreme possible. Magnetic Monochrome Magnetic chromosome is the study of colors that influence you the most, giving you the greatest vibrations. Each individual should find their personal magnetic chromosome by choosing a combination of those colors listed that give off the most vibrations. The highest physical power that is found in the universe is physical magnetism. There is nothing resistant to this magnetism, and it passes anywhere. Personal physical magnetism is generated by the brain and it passes in a figure eight through the solar plexus. To keep your personal magnetism active, keep yourself aroused and active.

The Path To Prosperity James Allen “The Path to Prosperity” is an eloquently written book by James Allen who authored several other New Thought Movement guides while living a piteous life filled with hard work and intense self-discipline. Unlike other NTM authors, Allen chose to live a servile lifestyle closer to that of a beggar than a famous writer. Allen was a unique character as observed and described by his close group of confidants. As an author his creativity carries over, and in this book he uses poetic verse in several instances to further explain information. Evil This book begins by explaining evil as misfortunes, pain and misery that is common in society, and that the idea of trying to escape them through drugs, alcohol or fantasies is wrong. The only way to permanent happiness is by correctly understanding what is evil, the cause of the problem. Evil exists only in our imagination, and can be erased from out mental directory. Evil is rooted in ignorance. An example of how ignorance leads to evil is racism. People who see differences in skin color or customs believe that they are either

23 Self Help Classics

superior or inferior. Yet if everyone would learn that this superficiality is only skin deep, as we all have equal ideas from within, this ignorance would disappear from society along with all of its baggage. Mental States Allen continues by discussing the world as a reflex of mental states. Your thoughts, desires and dreams are your own, so whatever you truly desire deep down in your heart, you will receive as ruled by Divine Law. Our body is only a shell that is home to the soul, “a complex combination of gathered experiences and thoughts.” If we are happy, it is due to happy thoughts. The infallible truth about life experiences is that they will only affect us as long as we permit them, as it is the emotions and feelings that come with the event that truly affect our being. To be happy, always think positive and have an optimistic outlook in your daily life. If you wish for others to be nice to you, be nice to them likewise if you want them to respect you, respect them. Whenever we are living in a bad situation and cannot see a way out, we should start thinking constructively in a positive manner. “Whatsoever a man sows that shall he also reap” can be positive or negative, and is to be applied in a beneficial way.

Hatred, anger, lust, envy and all of the negative ideas are akin to fire that will burn whoever it touches. Allen states that these ideas are all evil because they are rooted in ignorance of nature's law and lead to chaos and disillusion, which result in disease, grief, despair and failure. Self-Control However, we should not be in any hurry for this process to take place as the secret to happiness as well as misery is found within, and in order to fix our exterior life we must first seek peace in our inner self. Practice patience and self-control, and forgo feeling sorry for yourself. Allen also states that dominating another person goes against the Eternal Law and must be prohibited as someone seeks prosperity for themselves. If someone desires financial wealth, the purpose must be beneficial, and all that must be done is to sacrifice one's time and energy to others to gain reward. The silent power of thought control is explained by Allen as “thought forces continually being generated and sent forth as currents of salvation or destruction.” Everything starts with a simple thought. However, thinking about doubt, fear and stressful situations can ruin success. Every time someone thinks a thought, it is sent out and connects to those minds

that are receptive to it, and will cause a reaction whether for better or worse. Selfish or ugly thoughts that are sent out to stimulate an adversary's mind, will instead as a form of revenge, turn back and with increased strength and hit the person who is thinking badly of another. Thoughts that are filled with calmness, purity and joy reflect happiness, blessings, health and prosperity back to the sender. Think good thoughts with control and selflessness. The only way to find true power in life is by self-control, self-government and self-purification. Without the development of these traits, a person is useless to the world. Instead, control your suspicions, jealousy, anger, likes and dislikes, and all of those petty characterizing traits that are a result of some negative experience. Go into the Silence by meditating and practice focusing and concentrating your thoughts. Secret to Selfishness Happiness cannot be found solely in wealth and riches. Just as there are happy rich people, there are as many that are miserable. The latter group believes that happiness can be purchased, and yet after they have all that they could ever need or desire, they remain in a wretched existence. Allen states that “most people will admit that selfishness is the cause

of all the unhappiness in the world, but they fall under the soul-destroying delusion that it is somebody else's selfishness, and not their own.” If people only understood that being rich is not the reason for life and let go of the domination and subversion of selfishly getting everything for one's own gain, then there would not be the repression that makes others miserable. While desire is unquenchable and never completely fulfilled, happiness comes from a complete lack of desire and results in a perfect satisfaction filled with peace and joy. Heaven and Hell are found within each and every one of us; the latter comes from self-gratification, as Heaven comes from a complete denial of self. Only through unselfish acts of service and kindness to others will we find the ultimate satisfaction. It truly is more blessed to give than to receive, a phrase that every person can surely understand. True prosperity is only accessible and earned by those whose heart “abounds with integrity, trust, generosity and love.” Selfishness is a route to Hell, but serving others leads to Heaven. Allen finishes with an inspirational poem about the White Robe of the Heart Invisible. A quote from that poem: “Self shall depart, and Truth shall take its place The Changing One, the Indivisible Shall take up His abode in me, and cleanse

Those people who could benefit from careful application of this book would be any person that is living in poverty, pain, trouble, heartache or loneliness. Anybody that has selfish tendencies or places judgment on others could also learn a lesson or two. Sum of it All Allen's main purpose of “The Path to Prosperity” is to examine the states of mind that one must have to achieve true prosperity in one's personal life. Through the definition of evil as it exists and the fact that it is created and destroyed within our mind, Allen provides us with the ability to control ourselves. Self-control is essential in finding success, as it provides the clarity and focus needed to achieve our goals. The idea that prosperity can be measured in financial terms is discussed, leaving the reader to understand that simply being rich does not mean one is prosperous. To truly be prosperous, we must be self-serving to others in order to find our inner peace. This is the true path to prosperity.

The Secret of Success William Walker Atkinson Everyone in the world wants to attain something that is generally equal to success - reaching a goal. Success is as distinctive as fingerprints because everyone lives a life of their own. In fact, individuality leads to success as it allows people to break free from tradition and rules that hold them back from achieving their dreams. This requires each person to find their own path to being successful, as along the lines of one's individuality is the secret of success. Leaders are self-assertive and directive, while followers are without individuality and initiative (i.e. sheep). Great people enjoy living through following their inward convictions of personal strength and ability. Individual expression allows us to find our inner self (“I”) and express it, which is mandatory for success. The “I” is one's real self and it uses the mind to know, but without “I” the mind is nothing. To get in touch with the “I” means becoming a great being and power, and is required to become an individual. “Me” is personality, the outer shell of physical appearance, and is made up of characteristics, traits, habits, thoughts, expressions and motions. Spirit is energy, vivacity, courage and enthusiasm. To have spirit means to be

possessed with life and vigor, which leads to power and life and comes from the core of self, as defined by “I am.” Spirit is developed by instinct and intuition, by listening to that inner voice, conscious, or intuition. When two animals or people meet, their spirits battle to see which is stronger and will become the leader. This battle is not determined by physical strength, intellect or culture alone, but by the manifestation and recognition of spirit. The second wind, or third or fourth, is when the body opens the reserves to dispense vital energies, after the physical body has become exhausted. People have so much more life to offer than most realize, and the majority of people stroll through life without any hustle or bustle or vigor, which is spirit. Most people lack the desire or incentive, the “want to hard enough” attitude, and this desire is what stimulates will; without it, people will not accomplish anything. Earnest and enthusiasm are useful in fueling desire, and can be trained so a person can control and apply desire, interest or incentive when it is time to get something accomplished. This is one secret of success, that a person will not be anymore exhausted after applying desire, incentive or interest than they are from doing routine chores. Will is defined here as a vital power that is an acting force that can control other mental functions, as well as

other people through projection of itself. Will and “I” go together (will is power controlled by “I”). Desires are developed to allow the will to grow, and the application of auto-suggestion and constant attention is required for desire and will to manifest. Will is always present, but the individual must learn how to use it. A carefully trained will provides energy and invincible determination to make one powerful enough to overcome all odds. Will is the power behind determination and persistence added to resolve to accomplish a purpose. Enthusiasm, “to be inspired,” is really soul power and inspired interest. The more interest that is applied to something, the more confidence, desire and enthusiasm that is put forth. Vibrations of success follow enthusiasm and personal magnetism. “Did I do my best” always equals success, while “what's the use” breeds failure. Attachments are often mistaken for desire instead of looking for true inner desire of our spirit. Desire motivates every action based on the natural law of life. Man can master the “I” and control desire, and can even create desire instead of nonchalantly going with the desires that evolve through the Law of Averages. To create desire, first form a clear, vivid mental image of qualities, things, details, specifics of the completed whole desire as a reality. Imagination is a real faculty of mind that

makes a mold for things. Practice and perseverance are required to constantly focus mental images. Desire, craving, demand and longing are all qualities that help to fuel the fire of action. When something is desired enough and demanded, the individual will think about it as commonplace as eating and sleeping. The Law of Attraction operates by attracting things together based on interests, and the opposite law is repulsion. The law is universal, and affects all things physical and spiritual of life. In science, cohesion, or a chemical affinity, causes atoms to join together, for example. For instance, if an individual wants to accomplish or be successful they cannot do it alone. Groups, alliances, agreements, and arrangements must be formed in accordance with desire, and by the Law of Attraction and mental imagery the events and circumstances will come to garner success. The Law of Attraction is founded upon desire and will, and is necessary for success. Desire is important for success because it sets into motion the Law of Attraction. Desire-force is basic human life power and the stronger the energy generated, the more this leads to greater action of the Law of Attraction. Will is developed by natural force of mental influence. Thoughts of fear are detrimental to success and all negativity must be vanquished from the mind

via auto-suggestion and replaced with happy thoughts (always think of the positive; make the best of any situation). Vibrations are both positive and negative, and by replacing the negative ones with positive vibrations, the negativity is reduced and eventually replaced. The key to personal magnetism is enthusiasm thanks to a firm, confident and honest belief. Personal magnetism-types are loving, warm, attractive and friendly, and they attract others through their personality. Someone who is cold, intellectual, thoughtful, and rational is non-magnetic, and fails to generate attraction from others the same way as a person who is magnetic. This can be seen during elections where the best candidate may not get the votes because he or she is not attracting enough good vibes based on their appearance, aloof attitude or being a know-it-all. Everyone wants to be led by someone who can identify with them, and even though leaders are smarter and more intellectual than the most people, it is necessary for them to “work the crowd” and use their smarts to dumb themselves down in order to win the contest. An audience wants to feel with their heart, not think with their heads. This is another reason people who are uneducated refuse to listen to experts about any topics, because they are not attracted to the style or manner in which the expert is

reaching out to them. Personality is stage presence, and just as actors play various characters on stage, so do everyone in real life. Erving Goffman, a sociologist, defined this as symbolic interactionism and it is a major social theory about social interactions in everyday life. In order to use personality to gain success, one must think how they want to be because this will unfold into action. The art of taking interest in others is important for success, and it involves using personal magnetism to be agreeable towards others to influence them. However, do not become over involved and sacrifice one's own self. A middle ground must be established between being socially involved and committed to one's success. A way to do this with other people is to find something interesting in everyone that is met and focus on that interest. By the Law of Compensation any interest given will become interest received. Be a good listener, and listen with interest. Do not overwhelm or bore with personal experiences, and talk about what the other person is interested in or just let them do all of the talking. This will work for personal and business communications for success in persuading others. Self-control (keeping one's temper) is important, as anger is a sign of weakness and will disadvantage the irate person. Keep a controlled voice, calm,

low, steady, and without passion. Be neat, clean and have selfrespect; express quality in appearance and dress with a refined taste. Think of what type of personality is required to be successful, and build this up from the inside out. Earnest desire, confident expectation and a firm resolve are the three traits that make accomplishment and lead to success.

The Way of Peace James Allen The power of meditation leads one down the pathway to Divinity. Allen defines meditation as “intense dwelling in thought on an idea or subject in order to understand it; whatever you meditate on will become ingrained in you.” The act of meditation can physically transform thoughts into actions. However, do not dwell on the negative, as worrying only escalates the problem. This is the secret to all growth in spiritual life and knowledge, but it is more than sitting around and thinking. You have to make the effort to achieve your goal. It is along the path we take to gain success that we form our identity and character to be able to handle the success once it arrives. The Search for Truth Meditation must take place in the morning as soon as you rise from sleep. Getting up early is mandatory in meditation because it requires self-discipline to get out of bed when your body wants to continue being lazy. Also, by meditating before the rest of nature rises, including the sun, our bodies are enveloped in silence and peace before the hustle and bustle of

Serenity Masters: Self and Truth “Self is the denial of truth.” Humility is defined as being free of vanity, stubbornness

and egocentrism. If you are in yourself, you think your opinions or religious beliefs are the truth and all others are wrong. Truth is defined as unselfish, holy and with an aspiring heart, a peace is fulfilled. The Truth shall make you free is written in the Bible. If you seek the truth in your life let self die, with its lusts and desires, opinions, appetites, limited conceptions and prejudices. The truth is a renunciation of inner sin, and all suffering is of self. Cultivate your heart and develop balance, stability and

influence, as you will need these to become more powerful in truth. Power is developed, and can be developed by anyone who makes the effort. A man who is governed by self, and not principles of truth, will do anything to succeed, be it good or bad. In an effort to defend themselves they are suspicious and paranoid, constantly scheming on how to protect their self. Such a person would think of a financial loss, or a decrease in comfort or death as the worst possible fate. Whenever someone who follows self senses a threat to their peace, brotherhood or universal love, they make war to fix the problem because that person really believes in hate, strife and selfishness. Someone that is true to principles of love, faith, hope, good will and honesty, will not desert their principles because they are powerful. Their work will endure here on earth and they will be influential and successful. Meditate on divine love to bring it into your life and your faults will be presented clearly in your mind so that you may change them to make you a more peaceful spirit. This power gives you self-control and makes you successful in any situation. Break from custom and tradition, become unconventional and without opinion and walk alone following your inner light.

Divine versus Human Love Divine love is different from human love of which we are familiar in that it is free from partiality; it is universal. People who are proud, ambitious and self-seeking will inevitably suffer from defeat, misfortune, or humiliation because they are afflicted in their soul. Until they realize that they are striving for the wrong rewards and realize the truth, they will suffer. Divine love does not leave heartaches and is marked by purity, charity, self-control, patience and a sweet disposition. To divine love, there is no such thing as evil; it does not exist. Allen states that the Golden Age will occur when the rich quit despising the poor and vice versa. Instead of living in competition and jealousy, people will sympathize on the cause of their situation allowing them to think with “perfect calmness and deep compassion.” The way of peace has been presented, but it is up to the individual to make the first step to change. “He that hateth his brother is a murderer.” Entering the Infinite “As the smallest drop of water detached from the ocean contains all the qualities of the ocean, so man, detached in consciousness from the Infinite, contains within him its

likeness; and as the drop of water must, by the law of its nature, ultimately find its way back to the ocean and lose itself in its silent depths, so must man, by the unfailing law of his nature, at last return to his source, and lose himself in the great ocean of the I.” This quote from the book describes in vivid imagery the infinite and the process of life. Allen states that all life forms are in a continuous circle, and that everything must return to from where it came, meaning death is inevitable. However, to make the circle complete, the truth must be ascertained during this journey or else the circle is incomplete. The Great Law of Love is defined as rest, peace and harmony, and can be understood by anyone. The dogmas that are man-made in an effort to understand truth are completely useless. The truth is so complex and beyond anything we can imagine; we cannot simply recreate it. Truth is simply stated, but requires complete and total change of oneself. “Give up self, come unto me (away from all that defiles) and I will give you rest” through inward purity. First you must restrain your passions, and leave excitement, passion and anything intellectual to “enter the heart to find silence, calm, bliss and meditate there” to find the truth. You will obtain freedom and peace on your own through your individual effort. You are what you choose to be. This is

how you enter the infinite. Is this Program for Me? This program is meant for people who are looking for the meaning of peace and are seeking an inner peace that can only be found within themselves. Not to be taken lightly, “The Way of Peace” explains the reasons people search in vain in all the wrong areas of their lives to find something that is resting silently waiting and wanting to be discovered. As people read this book they should apply the ideals to their own perspective and then later meditate on what they have read and interpreted as the way of peace. Sum of it All “The Way of Peace” is another book written by Allen in the genre of the New Thought Movement. Written to teach others about the process of discovering inner peace, strength, and harmony, the way of peace directs the reader back to themselves. This book is more of a spiritual guide and anyone who reads this book will find more a more philosophical perspective to finding happiness.

Thought Vibrations William W. Atkinson Vibrations of thought can be understood in the mode of electricity and magnetism. These forces have been recognized by science and all of mankind to exist even though most people have not a clue as to how they operate. These activities are based on faith rather than knowledge, as most people are not electricians or scientists, and simply allow these forces to work in their lives without asking “why” or “how” they are to be. Atkinson is asking the same in reference to the science behind thought vibrations. The justification that they do not exist is unacceptable under the premise that because people cannot see or feel these vibrations, then they are not real. Pythagoras and Aristotle first made statements that the Earth was round, but because faith had taught the Earth was flat, no one wanted to accept this new idea. As we now know, centuries later, science was correct. This will one day be the case with thought vibrations as society becomes more advanced and accepting on the ability of the individual and power of thought to accomplish great tasks, replacing the archaic religious beliefs of the supernatural.

As Ye Shall Sow So Shall Ye Reap In nature one of the principles is that like attracts like. This can be seen as people of a certain skin color or intelligence level will be attracted to those of similar characteristics. People wish to be around others who are like them, and whenever someone breaks the normal expectations they are socially persecuted for being “different.” Examples of this with animals show that for reproductive processes animals mate with like animals; monkeys are not breeding with snakes, for example. Thought waves work in the same manner by attracting similar thought vibrations and circumstances to bring together more of the same thoughts. Those who think of love in all they do tend to be seen as looking through “rose-colored glasses,” ignoring the hatred in the world. Jealous people have a mindset that everyone else is jealous as well, and they are attracted to people with the same worldview. Our general attitude will reflect in even the smallest decisions that are made, as well as influencing new thoughts and acquaintances in order to ensure the general attitude will gain momentum. This attitude can be positive or negative, and will expand exponentially either way, so it is crucial to understand this process. Most everyone desires a happy cheerful life full of what is thought of as good luck, but really

this desired life has nothing to do with luck and is controlled by each individual. However, through a life of negative influences, such as jealousy, anger, hate, envy, greed, and poverty, you will never get the happiness you are after. Most people think that happiness is only a figment of the imagination and unattainable to them. This is where the science of thought vibrations works to explain how happiness and joy could be acquired by everyone and that every single person has the opportunity to have these in their lives. Scientific Explanation of Thought Waves Thought waves operate similar to the sun, radiating ideas out in all directions rather than on one single path. The distance between the place where the thought originates and the destination makes the waves weaker the farther they travel just as with sun light. Thoughts travel by way of the Great Sea of Life, the mental ether that surrounds everything on Earth. The mind is the central station of thoughts, and there are two distinct lines of mental effort - active and passive. The active function serves as the creator, taking in the new ideas and either changing or destroying thoughts in conjunction with the overall view point (either positive or negative). The passive function obeys the active function and carries out all orders and suggestions without judgment or selective thinking. The active

P a g e | 188

23 Self Help Classics

function produces thought-habits and sends it via vibrations to where the passive function carries the thought on through to the subconscious to become part of the order of thinking. This is why it is so important to make sure the main thought pattern is a good productive one, as all thoughts filter through depending on the core thoughts of the mind. Most people ignore the ability of the active function and go through lives like sheep accepting everything as truth depending on their faith in who is doing the talking, and it is too much of an effort to actually criticize or ask “why” when they are told something. Once this law is understood it becomes possible to use thoughts in a constructive manner, allowing the passive function to work to benefit the individual in serving the Higher Good. Fear is replaced by freedom when we find our true self and understand how to use our mind functions to help rather than hurt our motives and intentions. How Do I Get Happy? If we want to be happy, this starts by thinking happy thoughts. Let go of insecurities, fear and worry. Look for the best in everyone, and have faith that others will do the right thing. If we are looking for happiness we will let all unhappy thoughts fall to the wayside. Having a positive mental attitude in general will provide self-confidence and determination that

will overcome discouragement and failure. When we expect to be unhappy or even miserable, then that is what we will be. If there are two lines in which thought can be categorized, it is by positive and negative. To maintain a positive view point will result in feelings of strength, buoyancy, brightness, cheer, happiness, confidence and courage, and will be in action through doing work well, carrying out intentions and being progressive with success. The positive thoughts will attract other thoughts, people, circumstances, and opportunities to expand on themselves. The way to start this process of positive thinking begins by making the affirmation that something can and will be done in earnest faith, and after one truly wants to make their thought process happy will find the way in life to do so. The first step is to think happy thoughts on a positive scale, and believe with faith that this will develop. The Use of Will Willpower can be directed to ensure the success of the individual, but the will comes from nurturing and development, not training. Train the mind to supply will in the correct way. When the mind is developed the will can flourish; wonderful things will happen and new possibilities develop that would otherwise be seen as unattainable. “The secret of the will is the magic key which opens all doors.” We all understand willpower

and the use of this force in facing obstacles but unfortunately we only access this power in moments of stress or hardship. The use of will can be used in positive situations and applied constructively to work out solutions in any situation, good or bad. Strengthening the will comes from a strong desire, or aspiration. When someone really wants something in their life, they must develop the willpower to accomplish the task. First figure out what is most desirable, and make sure that the intentions are in good spirit to serve humanity without hurting or belittling others for selfish gain. Then go to work and get it done. The action is where most people fall off the wagon, as they are not willing to go through the motions. Resolve to do it. Energy and invincible determination make powerful people. Require the willpower and concentrate the energy through determination to get something accomplished that is on target with your overall purpose in life. Believe in yourself and gain the self-confidence to achieve anything in the world in relation to the goal. Stop wasting energy telling others about great plans and expectations and use this energy and knowledge to put forth the effort to accomplish the task at hand. Everyone is entitled to the best there is to life, and once that is realized, self-confidence will flourish. It is the direct inheritance of the Universal Life that every person needs to, and has the ability to

of the Higher Good. Learning how the different parts of the mind and thought process are constructed gives the student the knowledge to base personal experiences and organize facts thereby allowing the mind to become retrained for positive thinking. This is important in allowing the development of faith for the understanding of thought-vibrations since most education and personal viewpoints do not acknowledge the development of self in achieving success. Sum of It All Thought-vibrations are important in developing the psyche and filtering out negative and harmful information that is encountered on a daily basis by most of society. Atkinson explains these processes through scientific examination, just as electricity and magnetism are explained, since this is how most people will justify or rationalize new processes in their mind. We want to be able to compare something new to something old, and by using scientific terms and imagery, Atkinson takes the reader through the mind and power of will to apply the control of our self in becoming constructive helpful members of society, rather than going through life as a robot acting only when told to by someone else with no regards to the action or reason itself. .

Thought-Force In Business And Everyday Life William Atkinson This book is written as a set of lectures provided for Atkinson's classes and key points are listed before each section, allowing the reader to better understand the material. The main point of the book is to acquaint students with the tools for developing and effectively using the “might forces latent within.” Those latent forces are personal magnetism and psychic influence. In practice, we can learn how to think ourselves successful, or we can think ourselves poor - the thought is up to us. Personal Magnetism Atkinson explains how personal magnetism functions via scientific expression. This type of magnetism is a “subtle current of thought-waves, or thought-vibrations” that we all project from our mind every time we think a thought. These thought-forces are sent along as a subtle current, and as Atkinson states, that “tables along like a ray often far removed from us by space.” Rays of current are flowing from our minds towards the mind of whomever we are thinking of, and

whatever we have in our mind becomes reality, little by little. When we think, our thought-force is invading the minds of others, and sometimes we are also influenced by minds more powerful than our own. It follows that since we are master of our thoughts, then we are the controller of our destiny, and thought quickly becomes the most valuable and precious thing in the universe. Thought-force uses adductive power and the laws of nature to explain that it takes like to attract like, and bad to attract bad. Fear and hate are the beginners to all abhorrent thoughts, such as worry, doubt, timidity, lack of selfrespect, jealousy, spite, malice, envy, slander and morbid thoughts. The secret of personal magnetism leads to success in life and happiness by mastering the laws of mental control. Energy, ambition, determination, courage, confidence, perseverance, patience and prudence will break through, replacing weak thoughts with powerful thoughts of success. gaze, we have opportunity for great influence over others. The magnetic gaze allows us to hold the attention of another, and attract and impress them to gain their influence. This is important for mental influence, and is good for interviews. First, look right in the other person's eye and direct a firm and steady gaze. If they will not look directly at you, then trick them into allowing a glimpse of their gaze. Also keep this in mind in case someone is attempting to use their own magnetic gaze on you. The way to block them is to use a positive mental attitude, a protective thought aura. Then hold the gaze as long as possible while sending personal magnetism in thought-force in their direction. This will strengthen the ability of the thought-

force to become absorbed by the other person, granting sure success. Psychic Influence As long as there is no malicious intent, anyone can use mental, or psychic, influence to persuade another person. Thoughts work as vibrations, and in concentration they can act on the minds of others. First, relax and clear the mind, close the eyes and make a mental image of the other person. If the other person is unknown, make a vague or hazy picture. Once the person is as clearly visualized as possible, dwell on the desires or wishes and imagine the thoughts going out towards the person. This is only possible after achieving an open line of communication. A way to understand this can be witnessed by anyone who has moved into a new community, and learned the “new” ways of religion, politics, sports, etc. There is an attitude resulting from the adductive quality of thoughts. In order for the mental influence to be successful it must have three qualities: 1.
