Model Composition SPM 2 The world is a book and those who do not travel only read one page. Discuss the benefits of travelling. The saying, 'The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page', always reminds me of the iimpor mportanc tancee of travelling. Those who do not travel only know what the world has to offer in their backyard back yards. s. We are fort fortuna unate te to live liv e in a world today where travelling is open to more of us to a far great greater er extent than ever before. It is possible for us to travel virtually from anywhere on the planet to anywhere else within,, at most a twen within twenty-fou ty-fourr hour time perio period. d. This means that we have o ppo pport rtuni unitie tiess whi which ch eve even n our own parents or grandparents could literally have dreamed of and it is, therefore, important that we avail

ourselves of these thes e opportunities whenever we possibly can for a nu number mber of ve very ry good reasons reasons.. Travelling is very much an educational experience. It opens our eyes, not only to a wide variety of different places, but to a variety of different cultures. It allows us to see the way in which other ethnic groups live their lives and to better understand the reasons why they do so. This can be an excellentway of eliminating such prejudices caused through simple lack of understanding and teaches us to be more tolerant of other customs and religious beliefs. To add to that, one will actually see and therefore, fully appreciate the magnificence of some of the world's worl d's grea greatest test sites, of which we have previously only read or seen the pictures when we ttravel. ravel. Whether we are referring to the Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower, Niagara Falls or the Amazon forests, actually seeing these places with our own eyes is very different to seeing them even on television or in print. It can open our minds to the natural wonders of the world around us and lead to us having a greater understanding of our world and the forces which act upon it. The best way to do this is to see and experience things personally. Television, radio and even the Internet are great for keeping people posted on what is happening in the world and providing entertainment, but they are 'filtered' 'filtered'.. Nothing is ever quite the same as being there. Shows or books can never portray the reality of having experienced something first-hand. Travel allows 'living' opportunities to learn about new places, discover different cultures and communicate with people whose habits and histories offer fresh perspectives and experiences. Leafing through a coffee-table book on fine art or history simply does not compare to standing in front o f the Mona Lisa or looking across the Grand Canyon. Add the dimensions of sight and sound, the tastes of regional cuisine, the unique customs of other cultures, and you add genuine colours to black-and-white knowledge. As important, you share your own experiences and 'colours' that enrich the lives of others! You may hav e hea rd of som someon eonee sa sayin yin g tha t kno knowle wledge dge is power. Travelling may help to enhance your knowledge or understan understanding ding of a speci specific fic cultu culture. re. Peopl Peoplee from differe different nt parts of the world live in different cultures where they may do things differently, listen to different kinds of music that sound different from the ones you like, eat different types of food that may be different from yours and speak different languages. By being at the place where the people do things differently from you, you may have a better understanding of how they live. Having a better understand of someone's culture may help you to better deal with him h im or her an and d avoid any po possible ssible misunde misunderstand rstanding. ing. Travelling can be a fantastic way to refresh both our bodies and spirits. It is frequently touted that a change is as good as a rest, and this is particularly true when it comes to our immediate surroundings. When we are travelling, we may spend even less time resting than usual but the distraction which provides us pleasurable experiences can lead to us returning home fully refreshed and ready to get on with the business of going about our daily lives with new-found vigour. Finally, travelling can be a magnificent source of inspiration to such as a writer or an artist. As all their senses are stimulated in new and exciting ways, the creative juices can really start flowing and allow them to come up u p wit with h a plethora of fr fresh esh ideas ideas.. Whethe Whetherr it be the sme smell ll of the sp spices ices cook cooking ing in an IIndian ndian village or the spectacular underwater treasures of the ocean, sources of inspiration will greet the traveller at every twist and turn of their journey. Therefore, travelling can be seen as a way of making the most out of our lives and the opportunities that life itself presents us. It broadens our horizons, stimulates our thoughts and allows us to fully appreciate the wonders of the wider world around us in every conceivable way. So as it is said, 'Men go abroad to wonder at the height of the mountains, the huge waves of the sea, the long courses of the rivers, the vast compass of the ocean and the circular motions of the stars to make our life rich and vibrant.' The world is full of diversity - traditions, cultures, cuisines, beliefs, values, mother tongues, races, socio-economic status and many more. You will get nowhere by staying in your own town or kampong yourr whole life, and you will never see other lands, other you oth er cultures and other o ther ways wa ys of living. So get out there a and nd explore the world.
