OVERVIEW This is a very beneficial way to study portraiture, and we will re-visit it in longer versions in both graphite and charcoal at a later stage. The goal will be to use the artist’s drawing (make sure it is one you would like to draw) to help you to develop your own style by springboarding off of someone who is more advanced. Watch as I walk you through this process of correctly emulating someone’s work. It is not about copying but rather strategically picking the things that move you. Copying line for line is not what it is about but rather capturing the feeling and mood. After all, we are not attempting to do a forgery but an honest copy.

ASSIGNMENT: 30-MINUTE MASTER STUDY–FIRST DRAWING
The emphasis on this drawing will be on emulation of calligraphy. This is the first of three master studies you will do. Combine everything you have learned up to this point–stay watchful and present. Part 1: Watch my video demonstration. Part 2 Look over the PDFs and read over the tips and procedures. Part 3: Pay special attention to how I interpreted this drawing. I would have loved to go further, but with the time constraints it wasn’t feasible. Part 4: Feel free to take this further, maybe two or three hours, then make sure to post your drawing on the forums. Note: When doing copies, pick drawings which really strike a chord with you. Try to spend some time looking carefully over the image before starting.
