[email protected] EMAIL: Grammar Bite Job Interview: Do’s and Don’ts It’s no surprise that a strong interview is a determining factor in securing a new position. The more prepared you are, the more confident you will be - resulting in a better outcome. Here are the top five things you should always do before or during an interview: 1. Do your homework Preparation is the first essential step in the interview process, so don’t let yourself down before it’s even taken place. Researching the company you are meeting with will show your interest in the business and give you an upper hand. Look at their website and what’s happening in the news to widen your research and see what the media is saying about the company. Don’t limit your research to this alone - make sure you research the background of your interviewers, including their career history and specific achievements. 2. Make a good first impression If you're going to a face-to-face interview, plan your trip there, do a trial run if it is at an unfamiliar location and arrive a few minutes early for the interview. Late arrival for a job interview is inexcusable. Bring your CV and ensure you know the dates and its specifics so you can confidently talk through your CV and give examples. For a video interview, minimize technical issues by testing your video tool the day before your interview, on the day of your interview, ensure you are set up and ready to go at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time, in a quiet and comfortable place. You won't have the luxury of being able to offer a firm handshake or make eye contact with your interviewer, so the best alternative is for you to smile confidently and appear interested and engaged. Looking the part is also important and you can rarely go wrong wearing a well-fitting suit. The amount of care you take in your presentation is a sign of your interest in the role and your seriousness in making a good impression. 3. Listen and respond accordingly Too often the feedback from clients is that the candidate does not answer the question in a clear and direct manner. Don’t run circles around the questions, listen and answer accordingly while using examples from your experience to back it up. 4. Prepare smart, open ended questions to ask the interviewer Remember that an interview is a two-way two- way street, asking questions will help illustrate your interest and motivation to succeed in the role and company, as well as get you noticed and separate you from other candidates. It will also determine if this really is the opportunity or business you want to join. Communicating your experience and successes clearly will highlight any of your strengths that are relevant to the role. 5. Sell your strengths and expertise Make sure that you communicate your y our strengths to the interviewer in a concise, factual and a nd sincere manner. Here are the top five things you should never do: 1. Don’t speak poorly about your present or former employers. The interviewer will assume you will do this to them if you leave and question your professionalism. This is a big red flag to anyone interviewing a candidate. 2. Don’t falsify information information Answer questions truthfully and as close to the point as possible. Explain and describe things about yourself that relate to the position on offer, and truly reflect your past experience. If you are being probed in an area that is not a strength, be honest and let your interviewer know you are a re willing to learn or work on and how you can up skill in this area. Follow that with strengths you have in another area that you could bring to the table. 3. Don’t speak over the interviewer interviewer It is important to be a good listener as well as a good talker. It shows that you are respectful and have strong interpersonal skills. If you are interviewing via a video platform remember that there will be a slight time delay, avoid rushing to answer a question in case ca se your interviewer hasn't finished speaking. 4. Don’t assume it isn’t an interview interview
Regardless of what interview stage you are at or who you are meeting - it may be over a coffee, a few drinks or just labelled a final chat - it is still used as an opportunity to assess your suitability for the potential role. 5. Don’t let any past rejections infringe on future ones ones Finding a new job can be taxing, make sure you approach every interview as a new opportunity and learn from past interview mistakes. If you have several interviews lined up, try to leave some space between them to ensure you are at your best.

Grammar Bite The best job in the world (Transcript) Once again the organisation which promotes Australia, Tourism Australia, is advertising the best job in the world. But this year, they have six jobs going, all for six months, with a great salary and extra spending money. If you think one of these is your dream job, you have to make a 30-second video explaining why you are the best person for the role. But – be warned. Thousands of people will be competing for each post. The job of “outback adventurer” is for someone with a passion for outdoor life, and in the Northern Territory there are plenty of wide-open spaces. The job is for someone to find out the best adventures and jobs for young people on working holidays. You’d be getting close to wildlife, sleeping under the stars in a bush camp and flying over stunningly beautiful landscape landscape in a hot air balloon. Your duties will include getting to know about aboriginal culture and eating traditional bushfoods, maybe including the famous witchetty grubs – insect larvae. Like the idea of 200 days of sunshine every year? Job number two is a park ranger in tropical Queensland. It’s a wonderful state with ancient rainforests, the world’s largest sand island and the awesome Great Barrier Reef. Here your duties would include protecting and promoting native plants and animals, spectacular waterfalls, dinosaur fossils, untouched beaches and indigenous culture. You’d get paid to patrol the beaches of Lizard Island and live a life most people can only dream about. Another island job is as 'wildlife caretaker' on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. If you love all kinds of animals, this is the job for you. The advert says you’ll be able to talk to wallabies (a kind of small kangaroo), play with dolphins, cuddle koalas and sunbathe with seals on the unspoilt beach at Seal Bay. You would get about the island on foot, by bicycle, kayak or boat, taking photos and leaving only footprints. There is one potential drawback, though. You’d need to be pretty brave since you might come face to face with great white sharks. Maybe you are not quite so keen on the great outdoors and your talents are more journalistic. If you fancy feature writing, photography and making videos, you can apply for the position of lifestyle photojournalist for Time Out in Melbourne. You would be required to photograph and write about the city's coolest cafés and musical events. But you’d also cover tourist activities in the whole state of Victoria, including surfing on the Great Ocean Road, skiing at Mount Hotham or watching the little penguins at Phillip Island. I sland. Are you a foodie? Do you know about food, as well as love eating it? If the answer’s yes, you can apply for the role of ‘taste master’ in Western Australia. Your job would be to promote the best restaurants, pubs, wineries and breweries. You’d also catch fresh seafood off the beautiful coast and learn all about making wine and beer. Finally, a fantastic job in Sydney. We’ve all seen those amazing firework displays in Sydney Harbour. Well, you could be one of the people making that happen next year. New South Wales is looking for a ‘chief funster’, who would be based in Sydney while travelling around the state and tweeting about the coolest things going on. This job would appeal to someone interested in everything: sports, the arts, entertainment, food. You’d also be involved in making the Sydney Festival, Mardi Gras and Vivid Festival as spectacular, and as fun, as possible.

Child labour A major international clothing chain has launched an enquiry into claims that its suppliers are using child labour. Gap Inc, which sells its branded clothes worldwide, is meeting with suppliers to investigate allegations of children being used in sweatshops. The company has already terminated a contract with one Indian factory. Gap president Marka Hansen told reporters: "It's deeply, deeply disturbing to all of us…I feel violated and I feel very upset and angry with…the subcontractor who made this very, very, very unwise decision." Gap said it will not sell the garments made in this factory in its stores. There are fears that some of the abused children are as young as ten. Reports are that the children work 16 hours a day, often without pay. Factory bosses supposedly beat them with rubber pipes and put oily cloths in their mouths when they cry. Grammar Bite The use of child labor The use of child labor can ruin a company's reputation. This is especially true in the case of transnational supply and service chains, where the economic exploitation of children, even by a business partner, can damage a brand image and have strong repercussions on profit and stock value. Child labor deprives children of their childhood and their dignity. Child labor is a violation of human rights so fundamental that all must work together to effectively abolish it, without compromise. We are particularly concerned with children who work long hours for low or no wages often under conditions harmful to their health, physical and mental development, who are deprived of an education, and who may be separated from their families. Poverty emerges as the most compelling reason why children work. For poor households which need the money, children commonly contribute around 20 to 25 per cent of family income. However, poverty cannot be said to necessarily cause child labor. Although the large majority of child workers are from poor families, not all poor children are working. Deficient education systems In many developing countries, large numbers of poor families cannot afford to send their children to school. "Free" public education costs, for a poor family, up to the equivalent of onethird of the family's cash income, through payments for books, uniforms, transport costs, and even teachers. In many cases, children work in order to pay for their own schooling. Many children also live in communities where there are no schools, and consequently they work. Child labor is not the result of culture or work ethics, et hics, but rather of companies and subcontractors searching for a cheap and obedient labor force. The International Labor Organization estimates that around the world 250 million children between the ages of five and fourteen work, about 120 million of them fulltime. [1] Some of these children work in factories and other workplaces in the formal economy, but the vast majority work in informal enterprises, agriculture and in homes. International firms are part of this economy not only if they hire children, but also if they buy goods or services from children or from companies that make such purchases When the June, 1996 issue of Life magazine carried an article about child labor in Pakistan, Nike knew that it was in trouble. The article's lead photograph showed 12-year-old Tariq surrounded by the pieces of a Nike soccer ball which he would spend most of a day stitching together for the grand sum of 60 cents. In a matter of weeks, activists all across Canada and the United States were standing in front of Nike outlets, holding up Tariq's photo Recently if you go to a shop to buy your child a new soccer ball. There is a good possibility that the ball has been made by someone your child's age or even younger. About half of the world's soccer ball are made in Pakistan, and each one of them passes through a process of production where child labor is involved. This problem not only pertains to Pakistan but is worldwide. More than 200 children, some as young as 4 and 5 years of age, are involved in the production line. Majority of these children work in Asia, e.g in the nations of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia.

Read the text and answer the questions. ‘Persuasion’, by Jane Austen. Austen. "Anne," cried Mary, still at her window, "there is Mrs Clay, I am sure, standing under the colonnade, and a gentleman with her. I saw them turn the corner from Bath Street just now. They seemed deep in talk. Who is it? Come, and tell me. Good heavens! I recollect. It is Mr Elliot himself." "No," cried Anne, quickly, "it cannot be Mr Elliot, I assure you. He was to leave Bath at nine this morning, and does not come back till to-morrow." As she spoke, she felt that Captain Wentworth was looking at her, the consciousness of which vexed and embarrassed her, and made her regret that she had said so much, simple as it was. Mary, resenting that she should be supposed not to know her own cousin, began talking very warmly about the family features, and protesting still more positively that it was Mr Elliot, calling again upon Anne to come and look for herself, but Anne did not mean to stir, and tried to be cool and unconcerned. Her distress returned, however, on perceiving smiles and intelligent glances pass between two or three of the lady visitors, as if they believed themselves quite in the secret. It was evident that the report concerning her had spread, and a short pause succeeded, which seemed to ensure that it would now spread farther. "Do come, Anne" cried Mary, "come and look yourself. You will be too late if you do not make haste. They are parting; they are shaking hands. He is turning away. Not know Mr Elliot, indeed! You seem to have forgotten all about Lyme." To pacify Mary, and perhaps screen her own embarrassment, Anne did move quietly to the window. She was just in time to ascertain that it really was Mr Elliot, which she had never believed, before he disappeared on one side, as Mrs Clay walked quickly off on the other; and checking the surprise which she could not but feel at such an appearance of friendly conference between two persons of totally opposite interest, she calmly said, "Yes, it is Mr Elliot, certainly. He has changed his hour of going, I suppose, that is all, or I may be mistaken, I might not attend;" and walked back to her chair, recomposed, and with the comfortable hope of having acquitted herself well.

David and Melissa had been a happily married couple for six years. They lived a comfortably modest life in a small apartment and had been saving up for years in preparation for the next giant step in their life: a baby. However, after repeatedly trying to get pregnant for a whole year, they consulted a doctor and received devastating news. Melissa would be unable to conceive a child for the rest of her life. The bad news struck Melissa terribly hard. Seeing his wife in such a distraught and depressed state broke David's heart. "Don't worry," he told her. He then went to the bank, took out all their savings that had been held for the baby, and set se t out to do whatever he could to cheer his wife up. Since they no longer had to be careful with how much money they spent, David began splurging on everything he could think of. First, he took Melissa shopping for the finest and most beautiful clothes she could dream of. Then, they took an exotic vacation to the Florida Keys, where they spent a month exploring every island and spending thousands of dollars on the most beautiful hotels, and most delicious foods they could find. When they finally returned home. Melissa said,"Oh, David! Everything is perfect! I'm actually glad
we don't have a child." David smiled, content with his wife's happiness, and walked over to check their voicemails from when they were away. [email protected] EMAIL: Past Simple Tense for Regular verbs. In English language, there are the so called “actions” as the ones which people do, make, mak e, play or perform to have a result. When we talk about these “actions”, we can classify them a s: regular or irregular, because of the form of them.
Regular verbs are “regular” actions because their forms don’t change at all in terms of “form” when you speak them, write them or read them.
In Spanish, some people, students and also even teachers say that the regular verbs or actions are “easier, or less complicated to learn, know or even understand” . And, to be honest, it is true. When we talk about “regular actions or verbs”, we say that they are regular because their changes are “minimum”, but also because “In Spanish”, these types of verbs are ended in “AR”, for example verbs such as: “jugar”, “mirar”, “conversar”, “saltar”, “tocar un instrumento”, “tocar”, “mirar TV”, “caminar”, “llegar”, and so on. As you will see in the “Structure” these regular verbs or actions in English, will be shown like this: Spanish English Past Form Jugar play played Mirar look looked Conversar talk talked Saltar jump jumped Tocar un instrumento play an instrument played and instrument Tocar touch touched Mirar TV watch TV watched TV Caminar walk walked Llegar arrive arrived When you read them, you will see the “minimum” change from “AR” to “ED” at the end of the actions, for to notice the fact that they are “regular verbs or actions” . It is also important to consider that all these actions are “positive” Structure

[email protected] EMAIL: Grammar Bite Past Simple Tense for Irregular verbs. In English language, there are the so called “actions” as the ones which people do, make, mak e, play or perform to have a result. When we talk about these “actions”, we can classify them as: regular or irregular, because of the form f orm of them.
Irregular verbs are “irregular” irregular” actions because their forms don’t change at all in terms of “form” when you speak them, write them or read them. In Spanish, some people, students and also even teachers say that the irregular verbs or actions are “easier, or less complicated to learn, know or even understand” . And, to be honest, it is true. When we talk about “regular actions or verbs”, we say that they are regular because their changes are “minimum”, but also because “In Spanish”, these types of verbs are ended in “ER” or “IR”, for example verbs such as: “Ir”, “comer”, “ver”, “salir”, “escribir”, “leer”, “tener” etc. And except, the verbs “cortar” a nd “nadar” As you will see in the “Structure” these regular verbs or actions in English, will be shown like this: Spanish English Past Form Ir go went Comer eat ate Ver see saw Salir go out went out Escribir write wrote Cortar cut cut Nadar swim swam Leer read read Tener have had Venir come came When you read them, you will see the change because they are irregular, but in case of their forms can change or won’t.

"Pink Floyd: The Wall" It is a dark, expressionistic
musical structured around the memories of Pink, a depressed British rock musician. As a young boy, Pink suffered from the effects of his father's death in WWII, a distracted and distant mother, and a repressive and unresponsive school system. In the clip, a young Pink tries to express himself in writing, only to be ridiculed by his teacher and his fellow students. He escapes through fantasies of a factory/school in which faceless automaton children are processed on a conveyor belt which takes them to a meat grinder. The students then riot, singing "We don't need no education", and burn down the school. When the building is ablaze, they throw the teacher into the flames. This powerful clip contains striking visuals, evocative music, and simple, forceful lyrics. The images are dark, the hopelessness palpable. Note that the themes derived from the clip are different than the theme of the overall film, which focuses on how Pink builds a wall to insulate himself from the pain he experiences in the world. Answer the questions from the text 1. What is “The Wall”? Wall”? 2. Who suffered from the effects of his father’s death d eath in the Second War World? World?
3. What the clip has?

Grammar Bite “Another brick in the wall” Story The majority of the world believes “Another Brick in the Wall” by Pink Floyd is about students rebelling against the school system. In Walter Benjamin's essay, “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction,” states that when you reproduce an art then the original isn't as special and the meaning of the original is ruined which also ruins the arts aura. Music is an art because the musicians use their creativity and emotions just like an artist does when he makes a painting. There have been so many covers of Pink Floyd's “Another Brick in the Wall” that it has caused the true meaning of the song to be ignored. Alice Cooper covers this song on stage right after he sings his own song “Schools Out.” That makes people think “Another Brick in the Wall” is really about students rebelling against teachers. I am going to analyze the true meaning of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" and how the reproductions of this song ruined the deep meaning it had originally. Pink Floyd's Members and Creating the Song Pink Floyd is a very popular rock band from London England. The band was formed in 1965 and it's original members were Nick Mason, Syd Barrett, Richard Wright and Roger Waters. In 1967 David Gilmour joined as their fifth member. A year later Syd Barrett left the band due to mental health problems. After he left, Roger Waters became the primary lyric writer. The most successful single Pink Floyd wrote was released in 1979 called, “Another Brick In the Wall Part 2.” It sold more than 4 million copies worldwide. Rolling Stones magazine put the song in its list of 500 greatest songs of all time as number 375. The album that song was placed in was called “The Wall”. In an interview with Roger Waters, he explains where the concept of The Wall was inspired from: “Well, the idea for "The Wall' came from ten years of touring, rock shows, I think, particularly the last few years in '75 and in '77 we were playing to very large audiences, some of whom were our old audience who'd come to see us play, but most of whom were only there for the beer, in big stadiums, and, er, consequently it became rather an alienating experience doing the shows. I became very conscious of a wall between us and our audience and so this record started out as being an expression of those feelings.” During one of the concerts in 1977 a fan was invited on stage and the fan spat on Roger's face. That caused Roger to feel distanced from his fans and build a wall. According to the band, the "wall" is the self-isolating barrier we build over the course of our lives, and the "bricks in the wall" are the people and events that turn us inward and away from others.” Pink Floyd created a movie called “The Wall” released in 1982 which features the character, Pink who is a troubled rock star that is going through events that make up the story of the song “Another Brick in the Wall.”

Dropping out the school school is a serious problem in Morocco, each year nearly 20,000 children leave school before finishing primary education. Researchers and teachers attribute the problem to the ignorance of poor parents who don’t realize the importance of education. To tackle this problem, Morocco launched Tayssir programme to help poor families to enroll children in the school and ease the financial burden on them. “I’ve been able to buy some some of the thig s the children need”, said Rayssir beneficiary Fatima, a mother of three, living in Marrakesh who received 1,100 dirhams. “It’s encouraging because my husband only works on summertime”, she said Project Director Habib Kinami said that is too early to evaluate the program, there is already an increase in the number of enrolments in primary schools. “This program helped some children who drop -out of school, to re-enrol”, he added. During its pilot phase, phase , government tried out its Tayssir Financial Assistance in villages throughout 5 regions. To be eligible, villages need to have a poverty rate of 30% and at least 8% of eligible young people no pursuing an education. Time to practice Model practice. Read the text and complete the statements with parts of it. Chile combats dropout rates by opening day care centers at high schools By Pascale Bonnefoy | 01/12/10 SANTIAGO, Chile — Ignoring the dirty looks from other passengers, dozens of high school students get on public buses carrying their books in one arm, and their babies in the other. These are Chile's teenage moms, and they go to school with their children. Despite budget restraints and some complaints by parents, 36 public high schools across the country have opened day care centers for their students' babies. Three years ago, only one school offered a day care center. In years past, and still at many schools across the country, these young mothers would likely have been expelled or prevented from continuing their studies. They would be accused of setting bad examples for their peers. More than 16 percent of Chilean babies are born to teenage mothers, according to the latest Health Ministry data from 2006, up from 13.7 percent 15 years earlier. Most young moms drop out of school to care for their kids; some of their fathers also leave their schooling behind to start generating income. President Michelle Bachelet has made expanding coverage for early childhood education a priority. Since 2006, her government has tripled the number of day care centers for children under 2 and is set to meet its goal of 3,500 new centers by March. These centers are free and available for the poorest 40 percent of the population. Since demand is high, most have waiting lists, but adolescent mothers are given priority. The Juanita Fernandez Solar Technical High School is one of the three schools in Santiago with day care centers. An all-girls school, it offers five years of high school education that includes, in addition to the regular curriculum, technical training and internships in early child education, secretarial work, and the clothing and food industries. industries. When Catalina Alarcon became its director in 2006, she found herself with a great number of pregnant students. Most were from the district but some also came from other areas of the metropolitan region — girls who weren't admitted to schools in their districts because of their pregnancies or who felt discriminated against at their old schools. They badly needed a technical degree to get working soon to be able to raise their kids, and turned to Juanita Fernandez. The school didn't have day care back then. It was the students and their parents who first started pushing for one. "Their parents were concerned because all of these girls were in ninth and 10th grade and they didn't know what to do once their babies were born," Alarcon recalled. "So we called a general parents meeting and everyone agreed: we needed a day care center." Inaugurated in 2007 and funded mostly by the government, the day care center has capacity for 22 babies under 2. Students bring in their babies when classes start at 8 a.m. and spend recess with them. They have special leave from class when they need to breastfeed and are immediately called in when a problem arises. An open door policy allows these young moms to spend as much time as possible with their babies. Fancy Lobos had her son Cristobal when she was 15 and in 10th grade. She was happy, but above all, frightened about what her family would say. "My grandmother got mad and my mom didn't speak to me for two weeks. Then one day she took me to the health clinic to control my pregnancy. I was so little, I didn't even think I had to see a doctor," she said. She said the day care at her school was vital. Without it, Lobos is sure that she would have dropped out. Now, her son is 1, and she is about to start 12th grade. "They've taught me a lot of things here. I have spent a lot of time with the other girls with babies and we all help each other. We get together here in recess and talk. I believe a baby isn't an

[email protected] EMAIL: obstacle for studying or working. On the contrary, a child provides more satisfaction, it gives you more strength to carry on," said the teenage mom. Some outsiders accuse the high school of fomenting sex and teenage pregnancy by "making it easy" to have a baby. Alarcon says that is nonsense. "We are not promoting teenage pregnancy. What we are doing is supporting these girls so they can finish school, give them tools so they can enter the labor market and be able to bring up their babies. We are just facing reality," she said. In fact, the school says it takes pains to prevent pregnancy among its students by regularly holding sex education workshops. Actually, said Tamara Fuenzalida, director of this day care, having this center is the best contraceptive ever. "Their classmates see that caring for a baby involves a huge sacrifice. These students can't go out to party at night. If their baby is sick during the night, they come to class without having slept all night. They can't go out to recess like the others because they are here with their babies. The other girls see them arrive in the morning full of bags, the baby, sometimes a stroller and an umbrella," she said. Other municipalities have also taken unprecedented steps to ensure these students' education. In the Puente Alto district in Santiago, for example, a municipal decree outlines the rights and duties of students, their families and the school during pregnancy and after childbirth, including pre- and post-natal leave, as well as a five-day leave for male students fathering a child, medical appointments, leaves for breastfeeding and illness of their child, and psychological help if necessary. The rules even establish that pregnant students may not be prevented by their teachers from going to the bathroom whenever they wish. They also ensure that libraries offer reading material on pregnancy and self-care. In 2009, the National Board of School Assistance and Grants sent a questionnaire to all public high schools in the country to report on the number of students who were pregnant, had babies, or were fathering a child. This was the first time a government agency gathered this kind of statistic, and found that there were more than 16,000 students currently in one of these three situations. But despite regulations from the Education Ministry, the ways schools deal with the issue still vary significantly. "I have not seen regulations like the ones in Puente Alto in any other school," said Juanita Aguilera, in charge of gender issues at the Education Ministry. "It hasn't been easy, because this is a problem that society is just beginning to deal with, and many want to turn a blind eye to it," said Fuenzalida, the day care director. "There is no sex education in schools, and everyone says they oppose abortion (which is illegal in Chile), but when a girl gets pregnant, no one helps her get through school." Expose yourself to the language as much as possible: b) Practice makes perfect, which means that if you want to improve a certain skill you have to practice it. As a beginner learner you will need to achieve all 4 language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. 1. Listening: It plays a very important part in learning any language. Effective listening ensures understanding and it helps improve accuracy when speaking, among other things. How can you improve your listening skills? By listening actively, i.e. paying attention not only on what is said, but also how it is said. 2. Speaking: It is often the hardest of the four language skills, but as soon as you can speak a little English there are lots of ways to improve quickly and have tons of fun. 3. Reading: It is a process of the brain and it takes time to develop: your mind has to attach meaning to the words, phrases and expressions represented by symbols, plus get to understand the grammar and structure of the language used in the passage to read. If you develop strong reading skills, it’ll be very helpful to your future. 4. Grammar Bite Music can be a constructive way to express who you are and what you are feeling, especially in young children. It can often be difficult for children to say how they are feeling, primarily because they don’ttemper know the name of feeling they’re experiencing and instead they show that us by crying, throwing tantrums, or the having meltdowns. Emotional expression is something must be learned, and young children can be taught basic emotions such as happy, mad, sad, and scared as

[email protected] early as two years old. As they get older, further emotions such as frustration, nervousness, or shyness can be explained. Music and play is a very effective way for children to learn about and explore feelings, and then practice how to express and manage them (In fact, f act, given the emotionally charged charged nature of music it’s an incredibly effective way for everyone, not just children to express themselves and cope with challenging life circumstances). Whenever we’re making music, we leave the realm of social conditioning and conscious thought. Instead, we’re in direct contact with our emotions. Whenever we’re engaged in creativity, such as musicmusic -making, we’re present in the moment. This presence allows us to get in touch with our emotions and express them. Occasionally it can be hard to express emotions verbally, we find ourselves unable to find the ‘right’ words to say how we really feel – – on these occasions music can become a subtler form of expression.
Music can help children to ‘hear’ what certain feelings sound like like
A ‘Music and Feelings’ lesson plan can encourage children to recognize and talk about different feelings and emotions through a variety of musical fun activities. Recognizing emotions through music can help develop emotional intelligence. Music can help children to ‘hear’ what certain feelings sound like, and they can learn to tell what emotion is evoked by a piece of music. Improvising with music can help a child to get in touch with and/or express a feeling he or she may be experiencing at the time; whether that may be happy, sad, s ad, scared, or mad. The musical instruments can be ‘gates’ for their emotions and playing them allows their emotions to come through. Appropriate self-expression springs from a sense of self, and music (especially early music education) can help immensely with this. Feelings of stress, anxiety, or tension can also be addressed through music. Childhood stress has increased in the past few decades, with around 40 percent of kids reporting that they feel they worry too much. We tend to view the world of children as happy and carefree. After all, kids don't have jobs to keep or bills to pay, so what could they possibly have to worry about? Sadly, the answer is ‘plenty’! Even very young children have worries and feel stress to some degree. Academic and social pressures (especially from trying to fit in) create stress. In short, stress can affect anyone who feels overwhelmed — even children. Music can influence the mood of children and can be used to reduce stress and improve the sense of well-being in the following ways:
Distraction As music demands their attention, it acts as a distraction while also helping them explore their emotions. It also keeps them focused and prevents their mind from wandering to negative thoughts or worries. Mindfulness Music allows them to lose themselves in the moment as they enjoy the sounds they’re making or hearing. Through playing an instrument, they bring themselves into the here and now, and helps them to take a break from their anxieties. Creative Self-Expression While simply listening to music can reduce stress, creating music has the added benefit of expression and involvement, which focuses attention. Active participation in playing music and music appreciation has been shown to increase selfesteem.

[email protected] Music can give children a way to express themselves, to unleash their creativity, to be inspired and uplifted, to relax, and to relieve stress and tension. Making music with other people improves children’s social and emotional skills. They learn to work together as a team and develop their sense of empathy with others. Researchers have found that when children play music together – from simple rhythms to larger group performances – they are better able to tune into other people’s emotions. emotions.
There is little doubt that music can alter our mood and stir emotions
Emotions are one of the most fascinating features of the human mind. Music is an equally extraordinary characteristic. Understanding the special interaction between the two may take us closer to understanding the fundamental nature of both. There is little doubt that music can alter our mood and stir emotions, it has a powerful pull and you don’t need to be a scientist to confirm this as fact. Music has been reported to evoke the full range of human emotion including:
Patriotic or Loyal – National anthems and other music associated with a country or geographic area. Music and sounds associated with sports events, schools, clubs, and other organizations. Spiritual – Hymns, chants, gospel, and other music associated with religion or faith Nostalgic – Music can remind us of the past, both good times and bad times. Love – Music can be used to express love and as a sign of affection. Violent/Hatred – Music can be used in war or violence and to promote anger. Energetic – Rhythms in music can make us move faster and aid physical exercise. Happy or Sad – Music can lift our mood, make us smile or laugh. Alternatively, music can make us feel melancholy and can even make us cry. Irritated – Music we don’t like can irritate us, as a s can a tune that gets stuck in your head and is repeated over and Scared – Music canover. make us feel scared or tense, for example during some ‘dark’ moment in a movie. Calm - Certain music can help the mind slow down and initiate the relaxation response.
Perhaps the greatest gift of music lies in its capacity to allow people to experience emotions without the burden of having to experience the life events that lead to them. We can experience even extreme emotions in a controlled manner, at will, in comfortable circumstances. Most of all though, playing music makes people happy! There are few pleasures in this world that can be compared to the high you feel from letting your soul flow through your body and out through improvisation and music-making. Discover the stress-relieving power of playing your own song.
Most of all though, playing music makes people happy!

Grammar Bite Bite Watch the video uploaded and check how h ow question tag are made https://learnenglishteens.britishcouncil.org/grammar/intermediate-grammar/question-tags https://learnenglishteens.britishcouncil.org/grammar/intermediate-grammar/question-tags Tag questions are are short questions which speakers use at the end of a statement. If the intonation of the tag is falling, then the speaker is asking for confirmation of the statement. If it is rising, then the speaker is unsure and is in fact asking a question. There are rules to the formation of tag questions. For example 'Your name is Paul, isn't it?' it?' is formed by using the verb 'to be' and changing the positive statement to a negative question. We add question tags to the end of statements to turn them into questions. They are used in spoken language, especially when we want to check something is true, or invite people to agree with us. questions a) Form of the tag questions 1. We add a clause in the form of a question at the end of a sentence. If the main part of the sentence is positive, we usually add a negative question tag. For example: It’s It’s a a bit early, isn’t it? it? 2. If the main part is negative, we usually add a positive question tag. For example:
Mum isn’t in trouble, is she? 3. Yes, but you need to think about what verb to use in the tag. If there is an auxiliary, a modal verb or the verb to be in the main clause, we use that in the question tag. For example: you? You’re in a desert in the middle of Australia, aren’t you? 4. If there is another main verb, we use do in the correct form (as we would w ould with questions and negatives). For example: I think think she she might be getting a bit old for this sort of travelling, don’t you? you? told you we? We told you not to drive in the outback on your own, didn’t we?
