Wireline Toolstring...
Description
WIRELINE TOOLSTRING TOOL STRING COMPONENTS Weatherford Completion Systems actively encourages the application of a systems approach to completion operations. This is preferred to an approach in which individual system components are considered separately. This philosophy is reflected in the various parts of the Petroline™ range of equipment in that they are based on the belief that there are two core principles to address in achieving successful well servicing operations. The first principle is that the well design must be optimized to allow reliable completion installation and subsequent well servicing. The Uniset™ flow control range reflects this principle in the provision of equipment and techniques to achieve optimized well design. The second principle is that a range of innovative products and techniques must be employed to broaden the existing operating envelope of well servicing techniques. The Petroline™ toolstring range is an example of this. These two principles combine to form a systems based approach to well servicing. When this systems based approach is applied operational success is achieved by applying a combination of good well architecture design coupled with the deployment of innovative, high quality equipment. The design remit of wireline toolstring components was to develop enhanced deployment systems for well intervention operations. There is now a substantial range range of unique wirel ireline ine tools offering offering improvements improvements in speed, strength, safety safety and overall performance. Key to these improvem improvements ents was the introduction introduction in 1987 of the QLS™ QLS™quick lock system to replace traditi traditional onal sucker rod connectors. Now fifirmly rmly established established as the leading system of its type QLS™ is in use all over the world and has become almost an industry standard. As technology has moved ahead so has the intervention scope broadened. To meet the challenges this generates there are developments on-going to address the well servicing challenges generated. The wide acceptance of extended reach and horizontal wells presents unique challenges for well servicing and has lead to the development and improvement of equipment to suit. Long seen as an area of low technology and in many instances regarded as a “necessary evil” well intervention is now becoming recognized as fundamental, fundam ental, when properly properly executed, to enhancing well well performa performance nce and thereby thereby optimizing return on investment. investment. The toolstring range has been at the forefront of this changing perception and the products that have been developed are generally regarded as the leading edge in intervention technology. This capability now forms a significant building block allowing Weatherford to provide an integrated approach to the “life of well” cycle from drilling to abandonment. By meshing with our other drilling and completion capabilities we are able to provide significant benefits to the end user by understanding the impact of each discipline on the next.
FISHING EQUIPMENT Weatherford Completion Systems has established a reputation as the market leader in specialist wireline fishing tool design. These designs proved to be stronger and more reliable than the previous generation of tools. The ultimate test for these tools has been their use with the Heavy Duty Wireline Fishing Service. Using 2-1/16” toolstrings, impact forces in excess of 150,000 lbs are achievable. Weatherford Completion Systems operate 6 Heavy Duty Wireline Fishing packages, 3 in the North Sea and 3 in the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to the established products shown here, we can design and manufacture equipment to solve specific downhole problems. A separate Heavy Duty Wireline Fishing Services brochure contains more information relating to this service.

RELEASABLE ROPE SOCKET
STANDARD DROP BAR
The Releasable Rope Socket can be utilized with either slick or braided type wireline and is designed to release only in the event that the toolstring becomes stuck downhole.
The Releasable Rope Socket (RRS) Drop Bar is utilized to activate the release trigger of the RRS and allow recovery of the wireline, drop bar and RRS upper section from the wellbore. The drop bar is available to suit all wire sizes and can be fitted with centralizers based on tubing size.
The device is activated by a drop bar which is dropped down the wire in a similar manner to a go-devil or snipper. When the drop bar contacts the release trigger, the collet releases the lower fishing neck. The upper housing and drop bar are retrieved to surface leaving a clean fishing neck. The Releasable Rope Socket is multifunctional in that it can be used with both slickline and braided line merely by changing the internal clamping mechanism.
ROLLER DROP BAR
TRIGGER GAUGE
The Releasable Rope Socket (RRS) Roller Drop Bar is utilized to activate the release trigger of the RRS allowing recovery of the wireline, roller drop bar and RRS upper section from the wellbore. The drop bar is available to suit all wire sizes and can be fitted with rollers based on tubing size and any restrictions in the wellbore. The roller drop bar is utilised where deviation affects the use of a standard drop bar.
The trigger gauge for the Releasable Rope Sockets has 2 main functions: The trigger gauge is utilized as a releasing tool to disassemble the RRS. The trigger gauge is also utilized to confirm the correct positioning of the trigger assembly when the RRSis assembled.
QUICK LOCK SYSTEM
ROPE SOCKET (PEAR DROP TYPE)
QLS replaces traditional sucker rod toolstring connections. This allows for toolstring make-up and break-out times to be radically reduced. More significantly, the use of QLS connections removes a safety hazard from the operation. Using QLS connections there is no longer the need to use wrenches when making up toolstring.
The Rope Socket is a conventional slickline type utilizing a brass wedge (Pear Drop) to attach the wire to the Rope Socket and thereby the toolstring. It is available in sizes from 1-1/2” to 2-1/2” as standard although others are available on request.
ROPE SOCKET (BOWEN TYPE)
2 PIECE ROPE SOCKET
The Bowen Rope Socket is designed for use with braided wellservicing cable, usually from 3/16” O.D. to 5/16” O.D.
Originally designed for use with Weatherford’s Heavy Duty Fishing Service, and used with braided wellservice cables, the 2 piece Rope Socket utilizes a shear pin which acts as a predetermined ‘weak point’.
An industry standard with a proven track record, the use of variable cutter slips allows the wire to be cut at the Rope Socket in the event that the toolstring becomes stuck downhole. As standard, slips are available to cut 50% and 80% of full tensile wire strength.
In the event that the toolstring becomes stuck downhole, a sustained overpull will shear the pin allowing the upper section of the Rope Socket to be retrieved exposing a ‘clean’ fishing neck.
WIRELINE STEM
ROLLER STEM
Wireline Stem is used to provide the weight required to overcome the well pressure working against the wire in order to 'lower' wireline tools into the wellbore. This mass is also used to generate impact force when performing jarring operations downhole.
Roller Stem is used in higher deviation wells to minimize tool friction on the tubing wall by providing rolling contact. Petroline Roller Stem’s unique design offers a number of benefits over traditional roller stem.
Stem is available from 1" O.D. to 3" O.D. with a variety of fishing neck sizes, lengths and connections.
l
l
Rollers incorporate phosphor bronze wear bushings to reduce friction and minimize binding due to corrosion. Welded pins offer much higher retention security.
l
Geometric spiral of rollers ensures full, rather than edge, contact of rollers and improves performance.
l
Minimal roller projection outside of body O.D. reduces leverage across pins when restrictions are hit downhole thereby reducing possibility of pin failure.
l
GSM Nylatron roller versions available suited to operation in plastic coated tubulars.
KNUCKLE JOINT
HEAVY DUTY SWIVEL
Knuckle Joints are used to provide flexibility in wireline toolstrings and are available in a variety of designs. The knuckle joint has always been regarded as somewhat of a weak link in the toolstring and therefore the Petroline knuckle joint has been redesigned to address this problem.
The Heavy Duty Swivel has been developed to ensure free rotation of downhole wireline assemblies even when the toolstring is held in significant tension. Utilising friction reducing Beryllium Copper inserts the swivel will rotate freely even when under 2000 lbs load.
The hemispherical bearing surface of the knuckle joint takes all the compressive load generated by downward jarring, reducing the fatigue factors commonly seen by 50%. Extensive testing, combined with the quality of the design gives a significant increase in strength over comparable products and also increases working life.
Also capable of withstanding high impact forces it is suitable for use with the latest generation of high impact jars. By preventing build up of torque in the toolstring the chances of damage being caused to the wireline /well service strand are significantly reduced.
ACCELERATOR SUB
ADJUSTABLE UPSTROKE JAR
The Petroline Accelerator Sub was first designed to augment the performance of Adjustable Upstroke Jars and uses disc springs as opposed to conventional helical springs. This offers a number of performance advantages. Although commonly run only when jarring near surface, Accelerators significantly improve the effectiveness of all types of 'power' jars even at depth. By storing energy when an overpull is taken, then releasing this energy at the point where the jar fires, the mass of the stem on the toolstring is 'accelerated' up to the point of impact and thus increases the force generated. As well as increasing the jarring forces the Accelerator acts as a shock absorber, protecting the rope socket when jarring at shallow depths.
The Petroline Adjustable Upstroke Jar (PAJ) was introduced in response to an industry demand for higher downhole impact forces. The original ‘power’ jars utilised a hydraulic by-pass system to create an instantaneous release of wire tension resulting in an upward impact (jar). However the effective stroke of these jars limited the impacts available and the tendency for seal failure during prolonged use often resulted in serious downhole problems if the jar “gassed up”. Using a stack of disc spring washers, which is fully adjustable gives the ability to simulate the function of a hydraulic jar but without the associated risk. The jar stroke has been lengthened to give an improvement in impact force of up to 300%over hydraulic jars. These quantifiable improvements combined with the jars rugged construction have made the Adjustable Upstroke Jar the first choice for Operators and Service Companies worldwide.
EASY ADJUST JAR
JAR ACCESSORIES
Where extreme jarring performance is required. Petroline have developed the Easy-Adjust Jar (EAJ).
Hydraulic Calibration Sub
The EAJ provides an even greater impact force that the AdjustableUpstroke Jar and isespecially suited to jarring in high deviation wells.
This Hydraulic Calibration Sub is used to set up the Petroline Adjustable Upstroke or Easy Adjust Jar. This allows the jar to be fully tested or surface prior to running in well. Mechanical Calibration Key
Impact force can be adjusted without removing the EAJ from the toolstring load.
The Mechanical Calibration Key is used to set up the Petroline Adjustable Upstroke Jar.
MECHANICAL (SPANG) JAR
TUBULAR JAR
Petroline Mechanical Jars are manufactured by 'Spang' in the USA and are the original design which is now an oilfield standard. These jars are run directly above the downhole tool in order to deliver an impact force, either upwards or downwards, by manipulating the wireline. They can be supplied in various sizes and 'strokes' with QLS or Sucker Rod connections as standard.
The Tubular Jar is designed to deliver impact forces either upwards or downwards in the manner of a 'Spang' type jar. However it is normally only utilized for fishing operations or when well conditions have had an adverse effect on conventional 'spang' jars. The primary benefit when fishing is that loose wire debris in the well is much less likely to impede the operation of the tubular jar and occasionally the greater rigidity of the design can improve impact forces in certain well conditions. The design incorporates fluid by-pass holes in the body to optimize the velocity of the anvil to impact and is based on the Petroline Adjustable Upstroke Jar in order to withstand extremely high impact forces.
HIGH DEVIATION TUBULAR JAR
KNUCKLE JAR
The current generation of power jars have enhanced upward jarring action, especially high angle. At high angles the use of a spang style mechanical jar can often result in poor jar action downhole and poor jar 'visibility' at surface. Thus, a missing link in the system was a reliable high angle mechanical jar. The HDTJ addresses this deficiency.
The Knuckle Jar design is based on the unique Petroline Knuckle Joint to minimize compression load on the stem and thereby reduce fatigue and extend working life.
l
Robust ball races to reduce jar friction.
l
Full diameter jar rod gives high tensile rating.
l
Water jet cut slots to eliminate hydraulic damping effects.
l
Debris ingress to jar body prevented.
l
Matched to Petroline power jars.
The response from users of the HDTJ has been excellent with the jar action described as being "superb".
Knuckle Jars are primarily used in fishing operations or at any time where the main mechanical jars in the string may prove to be unreliable. Generally they are only used as a back-up in an emergency.
Releasable Rope Socket
HIGH IMPACT INTEGRATED TOOLSTRING (H.I.I.T.) The High Impact Integrated Toolstring (HIIT) System has been developed to offer the maximum toolstring performance in the shortest practical package. Traditionally when working below decks, height limitations have necessitated that toolstring configurations be compromised. Often this can cause severe operational difficulties resulting in failures. The H.I.I.T. systems consists of:
Spring Roller Centralizer
l
Releasable Rope Socket.
l
Upper Spring Roller Centralizer.
l l l l
Accelerator / Stem Combo. Lower Spring Roller Centralizer. Adjustable Power Jar / Tubular Jar Combo. Fluted Centralizer.
In a conventional toolstring these components would be over 27 feet in length. The HIIT is only 6ft long when closed and 9ft long when fully open. Combined Stem / Accelerator
Should additional weight be needed large diameter stem sections are optionally available. Due to the use of Spring Roller Centralizers HIIT equipment can be used in wells with up to 80 degrees deviation.
SPRING ROLLER CENTRALIZER
Spring Roller Centralizer
Combined Spring / Tubular Jar
Fluted Centralizer
Designed to meet the increasing need for devices which improve wireline operations in high angle wells, the SRC has already been widely used in wells of more than 80 degrees deviation. SRCs are positioned strategically in the wireline toolstring to provide complete rolling contact with the tubing wall. This removes all sliding forces, giving the following benefits: l
Vastly improved high angle well servicing.
l
Increased jarring capability.
l
Reduced damage to plastic coated tubulars.
l
Improved centralization.
Both the SRC and HIIT form part of the Petroline range of Rolling Systems equipment. More detailed information on the Rolling Systems equipment range can be supplied by your Weatherford representative or by referring to the Rolling Systems High Angle Well Intervention brochure.
WIRELINE TOOLSTRING ACCESSORIES
GAUGE CUTTER
BLIND BOX
Originally developed for removing paraffin and wax from the l.D. of the wellbore, Gauge Cutters are now commonly used to perform 'gauge' runs prior to retrieval of flow control devices and to check that landing nipples are not coated with deposits such as scale or wax prior to installation of a wireline plug.
A Blind Box is used to either beat down any obstruction encountered in the tubing string or to cut (box off) wire on top of a Rope Socket during fishing operations. Always ensure that the O.D. of the tool does not match too closely the l. D. of any downhole restriction such as a landing nipple, as the lack of fluid by-pass through the tool can cause 'sticking' problems.
LEAD IMPRESSION BLOCK
MAGNET
Lead Impression Blocks are used primarily in fishing operations to identify what is uppermost on the fish. The L.l.B. consists of a steel housing, filled with lead which is dressed to a very smooth finish prior to running. When the L.l.B. is on top of the fish, one downward jar deforms the lead which can then be interpreted at surface to indicate what is downhole.
Magnets are used for retrieving loose metallic debris from the wellbore and are available in a number of sizes. As well as standard tools it is also possible to source and supply high performance magnets for special applications.
TUBING SWAGE
TUBING END LOCATOR
The Tubing Swage can be used to remove large obstructions in tubing. Tubing swages of gradually increasing size can be run to progressively remove the obstruction.
The Tubing End Locator is run whenever accurate depth correlation is required at the lower end of the completion and is available in sizes to suit all weights of tubing. Using a proven mechanism incorporating a spring loaded locator finger and shear pin release mechanism, the T.E.L. allows accurate depth correlation during slickline operations.
CROSSOVER SUB
NIPPLE BRUSH
Crossover subs are utilized to connect differing thread or quick lock types. The QLS crossover sub can be supplied in any size/connection configuration. All crossover subs are supplied with standard fishing necks relevant to the connection size.
The Nipple Brush is used to clean up nipple profiles of deposits that may interfere with the operation of the nipple. For example, scale, wax or asphaltenes can be removed from key profiles and seal bores to allow the setting of a lock mandrel.
DUMP BAILER The Dump Bailer is used to spot chemicals (e.g. acid), downhole. The tool locales on top of a lock mandrel (set beforehand). Downward jarring shears the retaining pins and allows the chemical to be released from the chamber. Variations on this tool have been produced. For example a dump bailer which locates on top of a wireline retrievable safety valve and which seals inside the flowtube of the valve. This tool is used to remove scale from the valve which would otherwise have to be retrieval and changed out.
HYDROSTATIC BAILER The Hydrostatic Bailer is primarily used to clear compacted debris from the well bore, usually from on top of a flow control device. This is usually only utilised if a Pump Bailer (Sand Bailer) has proven ineffective. The upper section of the tool is a sealed chamber at atmospheric pressure, with a shearable piston at the longer end. Downward jarring releases the piston which is forced upwards by the influx of well pressure drawing in any debris below the tool. The debris is then retained by a ball (or flapper) type check valve to allow retrieval to surface.
PUMP (SAND) BAILER
SHIFTING TOOL ACTIVATOR
Sand Bailers are used to clear debris from the wellbore, usually when it has settled on top of a flow control device and is preventing retrieval. They are available in a number of sizes and operate on the principle of a bicycle pump with a relief valve in a piston. When stroked, this 'sucks' in debris at the bottom which incorporates a ball / flapper type check valve to retain the solids. Extension tubes can be supplied for high volume bailing operations as can alternative bottom subs to suit specific applications.
The Hydraulic Operated Shifting Tool Activator is designed to greatly enhancethe force imparted to the sliding sleeve from the shifting tool during sleeve opening or closing operations. The Activator can be run with any type of shifting tool and adapted to run in most tubing configurations. A continuous and variable force can be applied to the sleeve by the Activator simply by applying tubing pressure. The Activator incorporates a tell-tale device that will confirm the sleeve is open. The tool is particularly suited to high deviation wells where jarring action can be ineffective.
FISHING EQUIPMENT
HEAVY DUTY RELEASABLE OVERSHOT
HEAVY DUTY RELEASABLE SPEAR
An awareness of the functional requirementsof fishing equipment resulted in the development of the Heavy Duty Releasable Overshot. The Overshot has been designed to withstand jarring forces experienced during the most difficult of fishing operations. The Overshot, is manufactured to the highest standard, and is the most robust Overshot on the market today.
The Heavy Duty Releasable Spear is designed to engage the internal bore of a downhole device which does not have a serviceable fishing neck, whilst providing the facility to shear off and retrieve the spear to surface when required.
The Petroline Releasable Overshot, unlike most others, has been designed with the ability to release from the fish if desired. This is simply achieved by downward jarring. From an operational point of view the Overshot is of simple design with no complex components. No special tools are required for dismantling or reassembling and it therefore requires the minimum of maintenance. The Overshot is available in a full range of sizes with a complementary slip range. The tool is released by downward jarring until the pin shears, allowing the top sub mandrel to move downwards and latch the top of the slip mandrel.
This is particularly necessary when attempting to retrieve a ‘fish' which may need to be pumped / flowed through at a later stage if not recovered. Unlike similar devices previously available the Petroline Releasable Spear is designed to withstand high impact jarring operations. This feature combined with the design of the release mechanism makes this device a much more reliable option than conventional alternatives. Proven in use with the Heavy Duty Wireline Fishing Service it is available in a wide variety of engagement sizes and reaches.
HEAVY DUTY PULLING TOOL
DU PULLING TOOL
The Heavy Duty Pulling Tool (H.D.P.T.) was the first tool specifically designed for use in conjunction with the Adjustable Upstroke Jar in order to specifically withstand high impact jarring forces. Conventional pulling tools have between two and four latching dogs which when subjected to impact forces tend to either damage the fishing neck or, in the worst case, shear off. The H.D.P.T. uses a full circumference latch mechanism which spreads any load evenly around the fishing neck. This feature combined with the robust construction and fully encapsulated housing give a fivefold strength increase over conventional tools and minimizes fishing neck wear / damage.
The DU pulling tool was designed to overcome the weaknesses associated with convention pulling tools. When retrieving devices with internal fishing necks it may be necessary to jar both upwards and downwards. With convention GR or GS type tools this can result in premature shearing of the shear pin.
Available in a range of sizes to suit all conventional fishing necks it is also possible in some cases to utilise various finger cores within the same body, increasing cost effectiveness. This is without doubt the most effective fishing tool available.
The design of the DU pulling tool overcomes these problems by allowing bi -direction jarring where: l
Initial downward jarring will not shear out the DU
l
Subsequent upward jarring can be applied without shearing out the DU
l
Final downward jarring will shear the release pin allowing retrieval of the DU
The DU design allows shear out even when debris prevents the tool shouldering out on the fishing neck. With standard GR/GS designs this scenario may result in an expensive fishing operation.
INDEXING TOOL
RELEASABLE ALLIGATOR GRAB
The Weatherford Indexing Tool allows 360 degree rotation of fishing tools as required.
The Releasable Alligator Grab was developed to address the performance limitations of previous such devices. A number of improvements were made resulting in a tool which could be relied on to retrieve loose debris or ‘junk’ from a wellbore, even at depth in high deviation. Unlike previous designs, the Releasable Alligator Grab, when in the 'run' position, requires a small pin to be sheared before it can activate. This is accomplished by fairly light downward jarring once the junk is located but prevents premature activation when l.D. restrictions in the wellbore are encountered.
The rotation is achieved by means of an Indexing Shoe and ‘J’ Slot Mechanism activated by manipulation of the wireline string. The Indexing Tool can be used for offset fishing operation or to rotate muleshoe guides.
In addition there is also a safety release feature so that if the debris is not retrievable, upward jarring shears a release pin allowing the grab to disengage. Both these features are further enhanced by the adjustable spring rating which determines how much force is generated when activated. Custom jaws can be supplied on request.
BULLDOG SPEAR
BELL GUIDE
The Bulldog Spear is a simple internal grapple used for retrieving debris without a suitable fishing neck. Their simple design makes them both cost effective, reliable and they can be supplied from 0.5" to 7" engagement.
Bell Guides are attached by threads to the skirts of pulling tools / overshots to assist in latching the fishing neck / O.D. of the device to be retrieved. They can be supplied in a variety of sizes and designs to suit particular applications.
When selecting these items ensure that their inability to release will not compromise the operation or alternatively select a 'Releasable Spear'.
WIREFINDER TRIP SUB
EXPANDABLE WIREFINDER
Reverse taper completions present one major risk during any wireline operations - breaking the wire in the large bore tubing. Should this occur, a conventional wirefinder gives a high possibility of missing the top of the wire, becoming entangled, and causing a workover. The solution is to use a Petroline Expandable Wirefinder
The Expandable Wirefinder is for use in Reverse Taper Completions in which larger ID tubing (say 7") is run below smaller ID tubing (say 5-1/2"). In such completions, fishing broken wire with conventional finders can be problematic.
The WTS is used in place of a conventional crossover from the small bore to the large bore tubing. The WTS features a controlled taper profile which is designed to suit the trip keys on the Expandable Wirefinder. This minimises any bearing forces within the wirefinder mechanism and maximises its reliability. Wirefinder Trip Subs can be supplied to suit any tubing crossover combination, and any premium thread type. In combination with the Expandable Wirefinder, the WTS represent a very low cost insurance against potential workovers in reverse taper completions.
The Expandable Wirefinder is run through the smaller ID tubing section and on through the crossover to the larger ID section below. The tool is then pulled back to the tubing crossover. At this point the Expandable Finder is tripped on the crossover. The expandable finder fingers are then pushed by a spring from the tools body and contact the ID of the larger tubing section below. Normal wire finding operations can now take place. On retrieval back into the smaller ID tubing section the finder fingers collapse back into the tool body. An alternative version of the Expandable Wirefinder is also available that trips by downward jarring against a no-go in the completion.
WIRELINE FINDER / GRAB
WIRELINE GRAB
The Finder / Grab is used in the same manner as a conventional wire grab to retrieve broken wire downhole. However, with the addition of a wireline finder skirt there are a number of benefits.
The Wireline Grab is normally used to retrieve broken wire from within the wellbore and is always run on a pulling tool, hence the Rope Socket style top sub. In the event that the grab latches wire which cannot be retrieved it is possible to release the grab by shearing the pulling tool, in order to change toolstring components or wire type.
The number of wireline runs needed can be significantly reduced as the finder / grab combination negates the need for separate wirefinder and wiregrab runs. Also the possibility of passing the top of the wire is significantly reduced compared with a conventional wiregrab. Various size wire finders can be supplied for each different grab size.
Manufactured from solid tube, Petroline wire grabs are exceptionally robust, which combined with certified welding of the barbs makes them suitable for the heaviest fishing operations.
