Let’s discover Budapest together!

[

Budapest is the city of cultural diversity, festivals and thermal waters! Besides its unparalleled beauty, it is best known for its built heritage witnessing several thousand years of history, for its medicinal and thermal waters and for the fantastic Danube panorama. However, the modern districts, alternative pubs and Sziget Festival are all equally integral parts of this exciting, dynamic capital city.

The city can be crossed by public transport on land, on water and even beneath the earth, travelling on, for instance, the continent’s very first underground railway. No other capital in the world operates so many different forms of public transport, from the metro through trolley buses to a cogwheel railway. Tram No. 2, ranked one of the most attractive transport routes in the world by National Geographic, takes the traveller past sights such as the second largest Parliament building in Europe, the headquarters of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Chain Bridge. On the way there are magnificent views of major tourist attractions set in the hilly Buda side: Buda Castle with Matthias Church, Fishermen’s Bastion and the Royal Palace, as well as the Citadel atop Gellért Hill. In the meantime the Danube panorama, a Unesco World Heritage site, flashes by. At the end of the journey one can buy Hungaricum (classically Hungarian) food in what CNN has declared to be the most beautiful market hall in Europe. The city is home to historical monuments dating back several thousand years. Roman-period remains are located in Aquincum, while medieval Turkish baths can be enjoyed today in all their original glory. Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance and Art Nouveau built heritages are all waiting to be discovered. Beyond the fascinating permanent and temporary exhibitions of European standing arranged at the Museum of Fine Arts, the National Gallery, the National Museum and the Ethnographical Museum, Budapest’s wealth of museums and galleries offers virtually everything from transport collections to military history, from ancient times to the modern age.

Two of the best known churches in the city, St.  Stephen’s Basilica and Matthias Church, are not only remarkable for their scale and beauty but they are also focuses of the Catholic faith. The Inner City Parish Church by the Danube, which according to legend was shifted from its site during the construction of the bridge, the Church of St. Michael on Váci Street, famed for its concerts, or the popular wedding venue of the Church of St. Anne are all sights that should not be missed out. Budapest not only has a great Christian heritage but a remarkable Jewish culture, too; in fact, the largest functioning synagogue in Europe is located in Budapest, and it regularly hosts concerts and a festival. This fabulous city is hallmarked by a thriving cultural life. International music celebrities are on stage at the Palace of Arts virtually every day of the season, classical works have a permanent place in the Opera House, and the Budapest Spring Festival in March has signalled the opening of the cultural tourism season for the past 33 years. The range of venues continues to expand with the addition of, for instance, the brand-new Budapest Music Center and the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, which reopens this autumn after extensive renovation. A Lonely Planet survey of readers found that Budapest boasts the world’s best bar: the A38 ship; furthermore, there are around 100 clubs, bars or pubs that run live music programmes each evening. We have put together a listing of those sights that one simply cannot omit on a stay here, but if you really want to get a full sense of the heartbeat of the city then it is worth following where the locals go in order to uncover even more exciting and hidden gems.

MATTHIAS CHURCH Matthias Church (also known as the Church of Our Lady, or the Buda Castle Coronation Church) is located on Holy Trinity Square (Szentháromság tér). It took on its current form (resembling its earlier, Gothic design) on the basis of the plans of Frigyes Schulek between 1874-1896. There has been a church on this site ever since the House of Árpád. During the Ottoman occupation it functioned as a mosque. From the reigns of Béla IV to Charles IV, every king of Hungary had some kind of connection to the church; some built extensions to it and some were crowned here.

STATUE OF LIBERTY AND CITADEL The Italian word citadel means fortress, and this was the original purpose of the building constructed by the Habsburgs in 1854. Today, the rondella is a popular lookout point since virtually the entire city can be viewed from the top of Gellért Hill. The Citadel houses restaurants and a museum. The 40-m-high Statue of Liberty is topped by a woman holding aloft a palm branch, visible from nearly everywhere in Pest. 1118 Budapest, Citadella sétány 1. 18, 19, 41, 47, 49

MUSEUM OF APPLIED ARTS Founded in 1872, Budapest’s Museum of Applied Arts was the third such institution to be opened in Europe, after London and Vienna. From its earliest days, the museum collected applied art from both Hungary and abroad, historical and contemporary objects alike, and its treasures now include splendid works of art from the collection of one of the wealthiest aristocratic Hungarian families, the Esterházys.

Much of Hungary’s history is recounted in the huge square that was built to mark the 1000th anniversary of the country, in 1896. Archangel Gabriel protects the city from atop a 36-metre column. At the base, you’ll find the seven chieftains of the conquering Magyar tribes and the 14 statues in the colonnades are of Hungarian kings and representative figures.

MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS The Museum of Fine Arts, home to Hungary’s largest collection of fine art, overlooks Heroes’ Square. Opened 100 years ago, it offers a comprehensive overview of the development of European painting and sculpture, from the beginnings to the present day. Today it is the country’s most visited museum thanks in large part to important temporary exhibitions it has staged (for instance, Cézanne and Van Gogh).

Szentendre, the gateway of the Danube Bend, is a true cultural paradise. Galleries and museums, charming confectioneries, romantic cobbled streets, buskers and artisans make this small town an ideal day trip destination. The small Baroque town of Vác on the eastern bank of the Danube boasts a Bishop’s Palace, cathedral, synagogue, numerous churches and historical monuments, a finely restored Baroque main square and the largest botanical garden in Hungary (at Vácrátót). Nature is part of everyday life in Visegrád. Besides its most popular attraction, the Citadel, its spa is also worth a visit.

VISEGRÁD

Esztergom is home to the largest ecclesiastical collection in the country, the Christian Museum, and the largest cathedral of Hungary. A beautiful bridge leads from here to our Slovakian neighbours. You can even stroll across for a plate of strapacky and a beer. Lying only 30 kilometres from Budapest, Gödöllő is home to one of the largest Baroque palaces in Hungary. The Royal Palace, which housed Hungary’s EU presidency, is considered to have been the favourite residence of Queen Elisabeth (Sisi). South of Budapest in Etyek you will find atmospheric wine cellars, but if you fancy doing something more active there are tours of the Korda Filmpark located by a golf course.

Gastronomy Budapest flavours

[

A stroll through the centre of Budapest at midday will soon reveal, on shaded terraces, in restaurants, on the check tablecloths of inns, chop houses, at buffets, through the windows of butchers or under the arcades of Gozsdu Courtyard, just what is consumed by the huge appetite of a hungry city.

The glorious creations of Michelin starred and Gault et Millau-classified restaurants, fusion cuisine now also popular in Hungary in the wake of the Western culinary movements, and the international standard masterworks of bistro cooking are all made from fresh, traditional ingredients sourced locally: Hungarian Grey beef, Mangalica pork, goat’s cheese, legendary tasty Hungarian fruit and vegetables. There is a culinary revolution afoot in Hungary at this very moment. Slowly, the 20th century is coming to an end in kitchens and restaurants, creativity, quality, beauty and open-mindedness are winning ground, and in the meantime a respect for seasonality and the revised presentation of traditional, local tastes are becoming increasingly important. Hungarian dishes can be sampled in restaurants, even those that recall the flavours, settings and milieu of the 1970s and 80s, and several places still serve the very finest of Jewish cooking. Soup and pasta bars representing both Hungarian and international cuisine, and staffed by skilled chefs, reinforce the street-front dining culture. For the most honest, freshest lángos (fried dough), doughnuts, sweet chimney cake and local cheese check out the markets in town, while the local butcher’s shop is a great place for a stand-up bite to eat with baked sausage, blood pudding or liverwurst on the menu. One will come across delicious strudels, Zserbó cake,

2

Rákóczi cottage cheese cake, Somló dumplings, pies, Tokaj wine and pálinka (fruit brandy) desserts in every downtown confectionery, but strudel and chocolate shops also serve up mouth-watering experiences. Wine and pálinka makers in Hungary can still play with the variations of sweet and tart because the country continues to enjoy four distinct seasons, something that is not the case in an increasing number of places. Hungarian wines have entered the international market and quite a few have won medals in Bordeaux. There are great wines that you simply must try here: Villány, Szekszárd, Sopron, world famous Tokaj, Somló, Eger (the well known Eger Bull’s Blood or its white counterpart, Eger Star), produce from the Balaton Uplands and Mátra. It is also worth trying out the A-Z of spritzers composed from quality Hungarian wines. There is another “bylaw” it is necessary to comply with when in Hungary: sampling our pure, fresh, superb pálinkas (fruit brandy) made from authentic local fruits or even special vegetable spirits, among them many prize-winners at the Destillata world championship of brandies and liqueurs. Ever more restaurants are proud to chalk up on their boards: Hungarian artisan beers available here; beverages from the 47 family-run Hungarian breweries are excellent, and of course quite a few are international medal holders.

Several taxi companies operate in the city, marked by a yellow “taxi” sign and yellow registration plates. In authorized taxis the photo ID of the driver and the tariff table are clearly visible, and the meter starts with the relevant tariff at the beginning of the journey. We suggest you call a taxi in advance as the driver will pick you up only upon hearing your name, and the tariff will be cheaper. Avoid hailing a taxi on the street, and using unmarked taxis parked near railway stations and other busy intersections. We recommend: Főtaxi: +36 (1) 222 22 22, City taxi: +36 (1) 2 111 111, Taxi4: +36 (1) 444 44 44

PARKING TIP: Budapest is divided into zones, so you might encounter different tariffs when parking in public spaces. You have to find the nearest parking meter and insert coins, then place the receipt clearly visible behind your windscreen. You can opt to pay the parking fee via your mobile phone by sending an SMS to the number on the parking meter. Besides tariffs, parking hours also vary from zone to zone, but usually you have to pay from 8 am – 8 pm on weekdays. Weekends are usually free, except for special areas (such as the Castle District). We recommend parking tourist coaches in the car park behind Kunsthalle (short-term parking), and P+R car parks.

There is no end to the number of one-offs and special gear that can be bought in Budapest. In short, it is a great shopping city. The art market in Gozsdu courtyard is known the world over. BUDAPEST PLAYGROUNDS FOR ADULTS: ALTERNATIVE PUBS

STO E R I R A B I CLUB

Many come to Hungary specifically to experience the famous alternative pubs and retro-style garden scene that began flourishing in buildings marked for demolition and in empty plots from the end of the 1980s. Things move fast in these venues, it’s easy to meet people here, get a bite to eat with a drink, shop, dance and maybe find oneself in the middle of a brilliant concert. The pattern is based on similar projects in Berlin, but the seeds were already there in Pest in the 1980s. Young Hungarian intellectuals, stymied by not finding their own place in the ‘official culture’ sanctioned at the time, made new venues and new communities for themselves. Unoccupied flats, vacant gardens and condemned buildings were given new

4

life as alternative pubs (the term in Hungarian translates as ruin pub), complete with often extremely eclectic furnishings: chairs, tables, cupboards, sofas, carpets and musical instruments rescued from skips or picked up cheap at flea markets. The ‘home from home’ feel, long opening hours, buzz and spontaneity of alternative pubs is just as appealing to the local youth as it is to foreigners looking for a laid back and open attitude, and of course experiences, concerts, parties and friends. Food and drink served here is good and reliable; there is always cooked food, mainly bistro-type dishes, available as well as sandwiches and salads. Szimplakert on Kertész Street is Budapest’s longest established alternative pub. It functions as a local producer market, bike exchange and cinema, and of course there is no shortage of live concerts, either. The Kazinczy Street Kék Lófény is a fantastic spot to pick up handmade clothes and specialized jewellery crafted by applied artists. Kertem in City Park recreates the lido and beer garden milieu of the 1970s. Look closely and you’ll find bars, dance floors and quiet spaces amidst the enchanted forests of Instant on Nagymező Street. The list goes on and on: Tündérgyár, Púder, Filter Club, Corvintető, Gondozó Garden, Fogasház, Dürer Garden, Ellátó Garden, Kőleves, Anker’s, Super8, Kolor. It sometimes seems that a new place opens virtually every day.

Lifestyle Budapest over water and on land

[

Thermal water at a temperature of between 21-76 °C wells up under the city in vast quantities. Medicinal waters are available for bathers in Lukács Bath, Gellért Bath, Széchenyi Bath, one of Europe’s largest spa complexes with 21 pools, the 10-pool Dagály, as well as two 500-yearold baths from the period of Ottoman occupation: Király Bath and Veli Bej Bath.

5

Historical bathing establishments have all the latest facilities including saunas, wellness services, lazy river rides, jacuzzis, indoor and open-air swimming pools. The Rudas, for instance, still follows a custom that during the week, on separate men’s and women’s days, bathing costumes do not have to be worn, but instead a small cotton apron is handed out. We can also launch out on the water onboard a cruise ship, morning, afternoon or evening. In fact, there are so many famous sights close to the embankment that a boat sightseeing tour is a great idea. An apparently normal, albeit slightly oldfashioned yellow coach departs from in front of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and then to the shock of many it plunges straight into the Danube. Of course, it is actually an amphibious vehicle. This aquabus also does city sightseeing tours in the surroundings. Budapest has three-wheeler rickshaws plying the streets. Stops are located at top tourist attractions and another rickshaw will always be along in 5 minutes; tickets are valid for 24 hours. Attractions can also be accessed by the

hop-on hop-off double-decker red bus that halts at all the important sites. A pedal-powered bringóhintó is the ideal way to get around Margaret Island, while Segways can be hired from the corner of Erzsébet Square. You can even tour the city in a souped-up Trabant, which is one way of going back in time to the days of Socialism, and you are guaranteed to get some amused looks from passers-by as well. On uneven days a walking tour (10 am) leaves Szentháromság Square in the Castle district, stopping off at the architectural sights of Buda, and on even days the departure is from Sütő Street in downtown Pest. These tours dig down deep into the city’s architectural and historical roots. Figures from the Palace quarter written into the novels of Hungarian author Gyula Krúdy are conjured into life. In Buda, the cogwheel railway takes excursionists from Városmajor to Széchenyi Hill, the funicular operates to a schedule between the Castle and Clark Ádám Square, and the chairlift is a dramatic platform from where to view Zugliget and János Hill.

The Rudas Bath was built during the period of Turkish rule, which means that the building is more than 500 years old. It is special because men and women traditionally use it separately on weekdays. It is open for both sexes on weekends, and mixed night bathing is available on Friday and Saturday nights. The temperature of the water in the swimming pool is uniquely high, at 29 °C.

There is a verdant island of tranquillity in the middle of the pulsating metropolis offering numerous leisure activities. In addition to the Athletic Centre, the Alfréd Hajós Swimming Pool and Palatinus Beach, one of the most popular sports is running an ‘island round’ on the ready-made track or biking around the island by the unique 4- or 6-seater “bringó-hintó”. Margaret Island is home to a famous spa hotel, a small wildlife park and a jewel of a Japanese Garden, and if you crave culture, choose the Open-air Stage, one of the venues of the summer-long Budapest Summer Festival. Enjoy exhibitions and concerts at the Water Tower, and for more informal musical pleasures head to the Musical Fountain, where you can have a picnic or play ball. Margaret Island is also famous for its summer open-air clubs welcoming visitors with free entrance.

BUDAPEST ON THE MOVE

For those with the interest and desire, there are the most beautiful places to swim, run, play tennis and ride in Budapest. There are swimming pools on Margaret Island at the Hajós Alfréd Sport Swimming Pool, at the Császár-Komjádi Béla Sport Swimming Pool in Buda or in Dagály Bath. Perhaps the most convenient place to run is the Margaret Island Athletics Centre, where there are built tracks available, but one will find no shortage of people jogging on the streets, too. It is particularly pleasant to run on the broad pavements of Népliget and under the trees of City Park. For anyone considering going into the Hármas-határ Hills, the Fenyőgyöngye to Solymár route is recommended, and of course all the area around Normafa is similarly ideal for hill running. For tennis, try out the Rákosszentmihály Metrosport Centrum with 13 hard courts and an Australian Open court as well. Tennis courts can be booked at Városmajor, in the middle of City Park and on Margaret Island. Golfers might consider turning their attention to the St. Lőrinc Golf Club, Petneházy Golf Club or Golftanya on Shipyard Island. In the past few years no less than 200 km of cycle paths have been constructed in Budapest, and this network is likely to be extended even further. The No. 6 route of the Eurovelo network crosses the city. In 2011, Budapest received the tenth best points positioning from Copenhagize Index, and the achievements of CriticalMass are much spoken of and acknowledged around the world. It is possible to travel on two wheels from the city along the wonderful Danube embankment, through forests and past meadows, all the way to Visegrád or as far as Szob on the other side of the river. Along the way cyclists will come across buffets, restaurants, ice cream parlours and grill terraces. There are ferries at several points along the Danube, and a bridge at Tótfalu. Each summer the City Park ice rink is transformed into a romantic boating lake, where four-seater rowing boats can be hired. Of course, the Danube is also a great place to row. Two-, three- and four-seater kayaks, canoes and rowing boats can be hired out (even for tours lasting several days) from Kalóztanya at Gubacs Bridge. Canoes and kayaks can also be rented from the boating houses and rowing clubs on Római Embankment, for instance Rómaifürdő SE. Single-seater craft are also available here. It is possible to ride in the centre of town or on the fringes of the city. Horse riders will find a steed at the National Riding School on Kerepesi Road, the Petneházy Equestrian Centrum in Ady-liget, and at Airport Ranch near the airport. The Akadémia Horse Riding School located in a wooded part of the XVII district organizes pony riding, riding classes and cross-country tours. The city and surroundings do not close for sportsmen and women in the winter, either: there is organized skiing at Normafa on Szabadság Hill, and a skating rink in City Park.

CAVES A vast cave system comprising some 100 caves threads its way under the Buda Hills. One of these caverns, the Molnár János cave, is considered the world’s largest thermal water cave. The Budapest entrance to the Labyrinth opens in the Buda Castle district, a World Heritage site. The cave runs 10-15 metres below the surface, and can be visited daily between 10 am – 7 pm. 12 km of the Pál-völgy stalactite cave has been explored, of which 500 m is open to the public. The Szemlő-hegy cave – which has been found to be effective for the treatment of people with asthma and respiratory diseases – has been explored to a length of 2 200 m, of which 250 m is a tour route made of a convenient built walkway suitable for wheelchairs. Some of the more remote sections of the cave are also accessible with safety helmet, headlamp and an expert guide. The cave has a stable temperature of 12 °C; the visitor centre features an interactive exhibition and gift shop.

CITY PARK SKATING RINK AND BOATING LAKE Crown Prince Rudolf inaugurated the City Park Skating Rink in January 1870. The rink proved incredibly popular, all the more so because this was the largest contiguous skating rink in the world at that time. The first stone-built construction, with skate-binding room, orchestral arena and heated waiting room, was built on the designs of Ödön Lechner in 1874. This was extended in neo-Baroque style in 1895 (Imre Francsek). Further reconstruction has just been concluded. Each summer the new skating rink functions as a boating lake, with four-person rowing boats for hire, which can get as far as Vajdahunyad Castle and the flower borders of Liget Park.
