Situation in the community
All individuals view things differently (ex. Frog 1: outside world is sunny, Frog2: No! Outside world is dark!) Everyone may attempt to refer to what they objectively know (we have our own perspective), but the entire truth is not exactly covered or revealed with everyone’s statements --- varying interpretations of a single phenomenon or entity (e.g. the “outside world”). When people disagree, arguments ensue and problems may eventually arise, especially when community members have limited perspective of things.
A.
Situation in the community
The community has inherent strengths and weaknesses in order to achieve a common goal or interest as well as to achieve a common goal or interest as well as to pursue specific endeavors (symbolized by the fruits). There are “external” sources (symbolized by the hand) which may either help (opportunities) or hinder (threats) the community from achieving their goals. Resources may be available, but there may be apparent lack of access to such resources. Eg: Tuna in Zamboanga is depleting because of overfishing. We have Malampaya in Palawan as energy source, still we cannot feel its effect
B.
Strategies of Community Organizing
Using one’s strengths and potential opportunities may help solve the problems and issues of the community. Mobilization of all members of the community may be vital. Creating access to identified resources or resource supplementation may be at times necessary --- development of linkages and support system.
D.
Strategies of Community Organizing
Learn to discuss varying points of view and opinions. Keep an open mind on things while trying to understand them in a wider perspective Understand the situation better by taking into consideration other’s opinions and views. Good communication skills are essential and crucial in community organizing. Mga bisaya magkakasama, mga Ilokano magkakasama pero hindi sila sama sama as unshaken community…tayo tayo na nga lang, iba’t iba pa ang kultura…learn to respect different cultures

Situation in the community
The “learned” members of the community have a tendency to be more vocal of their points of view, more authoritarian in character, and always seem to be “in control” of things Kung well versed ka, hindi ibig sabihin dapat ikaw ang dominant, respect every opinion and every view…they belong to the community and they know more what they need..di ibig sabihin alam na natin lahat These individuals put high regard to their “expertise” oftentimes, neglecting to confer with others or discuss issues with their “beneficiaries”.

Situation in the community
Dole-outs promote dependence and do not encourage community members to look after their own needs. In medical missions, health teaching should also be done. Regarding the recent typhoon Yolanda, it is correct to give dole outs initially because they lost their resources; however, it should not just stop with giving dole outs. We should teach them to work and give them work. For example, in the Gawad Kalinga activities, they do not just give out houses. The people are involved in building the community. This is not just dole out. The community is empowered. Community members ought to “own” their problems, as well as the answers to their respective problems.

Strategies of Community Organizing
Skills development, together with education and training, is an essential factor in community organizing. Do not just give the community fish, teach the community how to fish—Jesus Christ
H.
Strategies of Community Organizing
Start where the people are. What are their perceived needs and desires? If people are consulted on what their felt needs are, there is a higher chance for participatory planning from the community members. “Outsiders” should not dictate on what ought to be done. Allow community people to discuss and decide. Importance of participatory planning:the community will own the program (Ano po ang tingin niyo?)

ANG PATING AT ANG MGA DILIS
For some, there is lack of awareness of existing community issues and problems (kung hindi ka naapektuhan, minsan wala kang pakialam… ex. Yolanda, we all helped but when there is no calamity, we don’t care about GIDAS)
L.
Strategies of Community Organizing
Every problematic situation should be approached properly—the need for advocacy in community organizing is apparent.
SUMMARY:
I.
Situation in the community
Oppressors (represented by the shark) oftentimes disrupt everyday living of community members by taking advantage of the misfortunes of others. Exploitation of vulnerable groups is not acceptable
J.
Strategies of Community Organizing
There is power in numbers. Stand up when you feel you are oppressed! Conflict confrontation, at times, resolves issues of oppression and exploitation. Facing one’s problems and looking for possible solutions to existing community issues are necessary in community organizing.

Situation in the community
Indifference to other people’s needs is a common issue for many individuals: o “away in the shore” o “the rich” o “people with barriers” o “unafected or apathetic members” Page 3 of 3
COMMUNITY ORGANIZING: o CO is a tool or method of work used to intervene in communities --- not just limited to work done by outside organizers, but ideally with everyone in the community. o CO leads to the transformation of people in the community from a pyramidal (e.g. top-down or bottom-up) to a circular format.
Pyramidal to circular community form.
