Introduction to Seismic Interpretation October 10-11, 2013 Bakersfield, CA

Overview Seismic interpretation is the extraction of subsurface geologic information from seismic data. A profitable development of any oil or gas field starts with a good understanding of the subsurface, for which geophysical techniques are essential. This course will begin by exploring seismic data. The instructor will examine seismic reflectivity and seismic velocity; migrated vs. unmigrated seismic; and how a seismic line differs from a cross section. This course will cover types of seismic displays, resolution limits, and well types. The instructor will review structural interpretation of seismic data and the pitfalls of working with this seismic data. He will also address how to work with older data, describe the stratigraphic interpretation of seismic data, as well as discuss the geometry of clastic sediments. In addition, he will explain seismic reflectivity of carbonate sediments. Direct hydrocarbon indicators including bright spots, flat spots and AVO, and seismic attributes will be discussed. The economics of the seismic acquisition decision will also be described. The course will finish with a review of advanced topics, including reservoir monitoring, vertical seismic profiling, shear and converted waves, and full waveform seismic inversion.

INSTRUCTOR Greg Croft / Principal / Greg Croft Inc. Mr. Croft has 30 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry. Upon receiving his MS in Geophysics from Stanford University, he spent eleven years with Chevron Overseas Petroleum as a staff geophysicist, staff analyst, and project leader. He also served as the assistant to the chief geophysicist; a one-year position that involved traveling to all of Chevron’s exploration offices to facilitate transfer of geophysical technology to operating units. In 1994, Mr. Croft cofounded Pantera Petroleum, a company whose mission was to provide services to the oil and gas industry. Services included block evaluations, 2D and 3D seismic interpretation and seismic survey design. He subsequently served as Executive Vice President of Harrods Natural Resources. In this role, he managed a 23 wellbore drilling program, supervised a staff of 20, and was responsible for a $20 million annual exploration budget. Currently, Mr. Croft is the principal of Greg Croft Inc, a company founded to provide technical services to the oil and gas industry, including enhanced oil recovery project screening, exploratory acreage evaluation and 2D and 3D seismic interpretation. He is also an adjunct professor for Saint Mary’s College of California. Mr. Croft received his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from University of California, Berkeley.

EUCI is authorized by IACET to offer 1.0 CEUs for the course. Instructional Methods Case studies and PowerPoint presentations will be used in this program for all learning outcomes. Requirements for Successful Completion of Program Participants must sign in/out each day and be in attendance for the entirety of the course and complete a course assessment with a score of 70% or higher to be eligible for continuing education credit.
