101 Ways Ways to Write a Tweet

It all begins with an idea…

Welcome. Thank you for purchasing 101 Ways to Write A Tweet.

This book is a compilation of the best ways to write tweets. To put 101 Ways together, I sat down and interviewed some of the biggest accounts on social media. The goal was to find out how they produce content. It is a look behind the scenes. It is a look into their laboratory. This is powerful knowledge because it is everyone's best practice. It is everyone’s playbook... and now it is yours.

If you use this book wisely, you will never run out of ideas. You can literally turn to any page and write multiple tweets based on each method. The key is to not just use the knowledge but to put it into action. After you put it into action, pay attention to what methods work for you. Pay attention to how you come up with ideas. Pay attention to what words resonate with your audience.

The goal is to not only show you what we do but to make you more aware.

A few do’s and don’ts before you get started….

101 Ways to to Write a Twe Tweet et - Conventional Ways to Tweet

1. The Platitude

Let’s start with the most conventional tweet: The Platitude.

Platitudes often get a bad rap on Twitter. It is because they do not feel authentic to the majority of serious consumers on the platform. People are primarily on Twitter to make connections and platitudes exist to increase engagement. I don’t recommend tweeting platitudes all day on your timeline, but every now and then is fine. Just make sure the advice is somewhat actionable. You don’t want to turn into a full-time fortune cookie account.

NOTE: Consume NOTE:  Consume great content to make your platitudes feel more unique.

Guidelines

1. 2.

Fo Focus cus on prov providi iding ng o one ne-si -singu ngular lar tru truth th to to yyour our aud audien ience. ce. Crea Create te a p pict ictur ure ew with ith wo word rds. s. Av Avoid oid be being ing gener generic. ic.

3.

Ut Utili ilize ze pla platit titud udes es tto o brin bring g aw awar aren eness ess to yyour our acc accoun ount. t.

Examples

You can always add a  follow up tweet and turn the platitude into a thread. The tweet on the right ⇨  went  went viral so I used it as an opportunity to dive deeper into the subject. This will make you sound more authentic.

2. The Story Platitude by Get Paid Writing (@getpaidwrite) This is one of my favorite tricks.

Platitudes get great engagement, but anyone can post a platitude. The trick is to make your platitude something that only you could post by blending it with your story. The best way is to briefly tell your story, then conclude with the “lesson” at the end (the platitude part).

GPW’s Guidelines

1.

Thin Th inkk of of an an impo import rtan antt mom momen entt in in you yourr lif life.

2.

Think Th ink of a pla platit titud ude e tha thatt rela relate tess to to the the st story ory..

3.

Finish the tweet with the platitude. Use the platitude as the moral of the story.

Example Here, I took two pretty standard platitudes: “Failure is just the next step to success.”  “It's never too late to change your path.” path .” But I mixed them in with my story to illustrate it. This makes it more relatable and much much more  more effective.

3. I have a rule…

I have a theory… people theory… people secretly love rules. rules. I learned this while teaching public school for 20 years. When you give children firm rules, they perform better. Adults are not much different. I believe most people innately crave structure, and because of this, tweets that involve rules are powerful. You can give the audience one rule or you can make a list of rules. It doesn’t matter. Your goal is to frame the rules in a straightforward, yet interesting way.

Ideas: I Ideas:  I have a rule, rules for young men, rules for life, the blueprint to wealth, rules for trading stocks... these are all examples of frameworks for “rule” tweets.

4. The Repeat After Me Tweet by Steve Adcock (@steveonspeed)

People love inspirational tweets if they are written in a fun and creative way. Positive and inspirational tweets do well, but including “Repeat after me” at the top of the tweet helps to capture the attention of your audience (because few Twitter accounts use this strategy).

Try to hit on what your followers are struggling with at the moment. If you do, they will probably RT your tweet, but will definitely  comment,  comment, which will boost your tweet’s engagement.

5. The Before and After by Your Your Friend Frie nd Andy (@OhHaiAndy) I like the before and after tweet for a few reasons. It's a great way to do a humblebrag and establish some credibility and show success. But more than that, it's a great way to frame that success with how far you've come. That makes it relatable and accessible. The other big reason I like these tweets is it lets you apply it to the reader with a directive like "you can do this too" or "if you think you can't do this, you're wrong." It's true, gets them fired up, and is an engagement powerhouse. The other beautiful thing about these tweets is they are follower magnets. People love numbers, accomplishments, rags to riches, etc.

I’d share a quick fact about cognitive science and if there was room, examples of its effects or ways it could be applied. It helped cement me as the psychology guy in our community. 8. Stream of Consciousness

This is my new favorite way to write tweets. Pick a topic and rattle off about a paragraph worth of information. I think of this tweet like like a form of a brain dump. The end result should feel like you are talking directly to the audience. There is no formatting. Just mix long and short sentences to create rhythm. You want the end result to exude passion and authenticity.

NOTE: I NOTE:  I prefer to write this in one big block of text. It helps keep the energy moving.

9. I don’t know who needs to hear this...

I don’t know who needs to hear this but, “I don’t know who needs to hear this” tweets perform very well on the timeline. This is a meme that has been used for a long-time on Twitter but it still works. This meme has a rare combination of exuding energy while creating suspense.

These tweets are also easy to write. Just title the post, “I don’t know who needs to hear this” and provide one piece of advice. In the tweet below, I combine it with “#8 Stream of Consciousness” to give it even more energy. Your advice can be serious or you can even turn it into a joke.

10. Tell a Story by Middle Aged Survivor (@aged_survivor)

To me, a great tweet is a cross-section between good storytelling, genuine personal experience, and pertinent topics of the day. Platitude tweets as always will get engagement. There are a number of topics that everyone should hit every week because to keep engagement high. However, to make a great tweet that brings in highly engaged followers, you must tell a story from your own experience that will resonate and touch the sore spots in people's lives.

Telling a story will bring followers and build relationships. Some have brought me over 100 new followers. On top of that, I’ve received DM’s requesting some personal advice or coaching. People feel like they know you when you open up. Don’t be afraid to dip into your personal experiences, even the painful ones are gems of wisdom that can help inspire others.

When you write this tweet think of giving your audience a reminder and tell them exactly what they need to do. These tweets should be framed under a “no excuses” mentality.

There are many ways to write one of these tweets. To start ask yourself, “what “ what would my audience what to hear in the morning?” morning?” You can give a piece of advice that involves a morning routine or simply wish everyone a Good Morning. Including humor also works well for these types of tweets. For extra spice, use the “Good “Good morning to everyone except ” template.

This is a 2-part tweet that addresses a negative action and then a question (to yourself). The question you ask will provide a solution to your problem.

All I know is that it WORKS I think it works because it gets a visceral reaction from the reader. This is what you “should” have accomplished. Some people will feel great when they read this, others not so much. Some people hate being reminded about what they “should” have done. All at the same time, these tweets come across as sage advice to younger readers.

16. Define Important Words (in your niche) by SaveY Sav eYourSons ourSons (@SaveY (@SaveYourSons) ourSons) Simply offering your   definition definition of a ‘hot’ word in your niche can go a long way toward getting impressions and followers. Do you talk about marketing? Great. Define it in a unique way. “Marketing is really just ….” Do you talk about financial independence? Define it. “Financial independence means no longer having to xyz….”

These types of tweets always spark conversation. The conversation is great for impressions. And they allow you the chance to look like an expert or a thinker in your niche.

Note: Don’t Note:  Don’t simply use the dictionary definition for these. They have to include your  unique  unique thoughts. They must include your twist on the definition. The idea is to make people think, ‘oh yeah, that is a is a better way to think about xyz topic!”

17. Tweet About What Everyone is Thinking About by Get Paid Writing (@getpaidwrite)

Tweets are most successful when they’re relatable. And they’re most relatable when you tweet about what everyone is thinking about. Look for major holidays or big events. Then tweet about them. It doesn't need to be direct, but if it’s related to the event in some way people will connect with it.

If everyone is already thinking about your tweet topic before they see it then your work is done.

18. The Actionable Tweet by Idyllic Finance (@IdyllicFinance) The Actionable Tweet is one of my favorites because it's short, simple, and gives the reader clear steps. All it requires is one main topic that you then break down into 3-5 simple steps. The key is to pick a valuable topic, and then provide 3-5 DIRECTLY ACTIONABLE steps that the reader can pursue right away. Here are some ideas: -

19. The Simplified Blueprint by Get Paid Writing (@getpaidwrite) I got this one from JK Molina. He calls it a “roadmap” but I think of it as a simplified blueprint.

Take the path to success in your field, or a project. Anything that is made up of a series of steps. Then simplify them to an absurd degree. Post it as a numbered list. The key is to make it sound so easy it’s almost unbelievable that it’s that simple (without actually being untrue).

Everyone knows that there is a bit more to it than that. But they will be inspired by the basic blueprint.

20. Clickbait 1-Liners With a Redirect  Redirect  by F F.I. .I. Squirrel (@FI_Squirrel)  A fun way to to get people people engaged engaged with your content content is to hook them them in with a catchy first first line, lead lead them down a path that gets them doubting you, then redirect them at the end. The first line will draw them in while the middle of the tweet can provide edgy content that keeps them reading. Just when your reader is fired up and preparing to roast you in the comments you can redirect them to your message at the end. The closing statement can be used to deliver a humorous punchline or strong message.

The trick is to find excellent source material. Make material. Make a list of historical figures in your niche. Then find validated quotes that have performed well (Goodreads, Twitter).

I use these sparingly (it feels like cheating) and always try to add a personal touch. I either add a painting or a personal experience or at least a thought to the quote.

29. The One-Liner (with Value F Follow ollow Up) by by SaveYourSons  SaveYourSons (@Sav (@SaveY eYourSons) ourSons) Let’s face the truth: we truth: we all know one-liners and simple platitude-type affirmations get great engagement. If your goal is to grow your Twitter account, you are going to need to get comfortable posting these types of short, pithy statements. But let’s also face this truth: if truth: if all you tweet are simple little platitudes or one-liners, you aren’t establishing a connection with your audience. You aren’t establishing authority. And you are going to have a hard time monetizing your account because you are ultimately trafficking in low-substance, low value, dopamine hits for your readers. So what’s the solution? One way to get the best of both worlds. Use worlds.  Use what I call the “value follow up”. Here’s how it works: You tweet your little one-liner. Tweet that platitude. Fire it off. Get some good engagement going. No shame in that. Then, when it’s clear you’ve got a well-performing tweet on your hands, add a follow-up tweet that further expands on the idea.

48. Tell an Uncomfortable Truth & Make the Fear Real by Your Friend Andy (@OhHaiAndy) Much like an unpopular opinion tweet or a hard truth tweet, this type of tweet will get attention right away from your hot or real take. Then it will paint a picture of the danger of that truth/reality. The reader will start by thinking "is this true?" or "that can't be!" to realizing this is a real and uncomfortable fear they have and worry about.

It's a great wake up call in their timeline and get grabs attention. It's also a great way to get engagement. Everyone and their mom will want to share their opinion of why you're wrong or right and everything in between.

Especially when you’re expending more effort than normal. The big problem is remembering it when you get back. Keep repeating it in your head.

My favorite way to do that is to work through the editing while I’m running. The idea comes to you, try and work out how you’d phrase it and deliver the message before you get home. That way as soon as you get back you can load it up.

68. Talking to Narcissists by F F.I. .I. Squirrel (@FI_Squirrel) This is one of my favorite ways to craft a tweet that suggests what NOT to do. We all either work with, are friends with, or are related to a narcissist. I love to tweet about being selfless and serving others. Narcissists provide endless content for me as they constantly remind me of the attributes I wish to avoid. Rather than walk away from a negative interaction with frustration, I try to pull value from all conversations. Content is literally everywhere.

What I like to do do is organize my tweets based on a certain format or style. In essence, I turn my best tweets into formulas I can use over again, especially when my engagement is down.

Here’s how I do it:  it:  I create a Google doc and a two-column table like this...

Then every time a tweet takes off, I copy and paste the tweet into the relevant column. Now when I need to write a tweet, I simply open the Google Doc and rewrite a tweet from 3 months ago or write a fresh tweet using the ideas as inspiration. I do this when I need to improve my engagement.

74. Say It With Repetition by Get Paid Writing Writing (@getpaidwrite) Repetition, repetition. I love repetition. This is the most popular rhetorical trick on Twitter and for good reason. It’s easy, and it’s effective. There are 4 main types of repetition:  (repeat the start of each phrase), Epistrophe  (repeat the end of each phrase), Diacope phrase),  Diacope Anaphora (repeat Anaphora Epistrophe (repeat (break up the repetition with something else) and Chiasm Chiasm (mirror  (mirror the start of your phrase at the end). Experiment with all of them, but Anaphora and Epistrophe are the easiest to start with.

75. Say It With Alliteration by by Get  Get Paid Wr iting iting (@getpaidwrite)  Alliteration is the repetition of sounds in words. It’s It’s a really powerful tool to improve improve your writing because it makes things more memorable and persuasive because the brain is tricked into thinking that the structure makes sense.

I would stick to alliterating 2 or 3 words in a tweet. Just enough to make people think “that sounds good” without immediately arriving at why. why. Don’t overdo it and make it sound contrived.

GPW’s Guidelines

1.

Don’t over do it!

2.

Don’t Do n’t use a thes thesaur aurus us.. It’s It’s too too eas easyy to to use use the wr wrong ong word because it alliterates.

3.

Break it up. Avoid 3 in a row.

Example

Let’s just say there’s a reason I like to talk abo ut “writing well” and not “good writing” or “being a great writer”.

The alliteration is subtle here but the B appears appears at the start, middle and end. A nice pattern that subconsciously registers registers as symmetrical symmetric al (our brains love symmetry).

Remember, you want to stop them scrolling.  Second, expand on the topic by picking out the most important aspect of the headline to explain. Third, finish it off with a great rhyme. The rhyme is going to make it stick in someone's mind. This will help your tweet stand out.

79. Use Visuals by Excel in Math Math (@Excel  _In_Math) _In_Math) The brain processes visual information 60,000 times faster than it processes text. Whenever possible, use visuals in your tweet to get your point across. It must be informative, but also visually aesthetic. Ultimately the visuals are going to help you make your point. Find images online, create your own graphic, or my personal favorite, create graphs and charts with Microsoft Excel.

Excel’s Guidelines

1.

The purpose of your visual should be clear and should enhance your tweet, not make it confusing.

2.

Scale your image so the dimensions are proportional to the recommended 1200x675 pixels without distorting it.

3.

Aesthetics matter. Use colors that compliment

4.

101 Ways Ways to Write a Tweet

101. Your Your Content is your life life... ... You can learn every trick in the book. You can learn every single hack. You can find out exactly what the audience wants and then give it to them exactly the way they want it. All of these observations are smart but none of them will help you build a unique brand.

How do I stand out in a sea of generic accounts?

Let face it, most people on Twitter play it too safe. They are in the game for likes and they are afraid of saying what they really think. No one wants to get their account canceled. And it is not just content creators who experience this... it is a by-product of our society. Everyone wants to stick to the approved narrative because it is comfortable, but comfortable does not equal progress.

This brings me to the most important lesson: You need to share your story and your ideas. If your ideas are polarizing, naturally some people will not like them. That is a GOOD thing. It thing. It means you are being authentic. You aren’t trying to fit in and that is what makes social media special. If I wanted to hear an approved narrative I can just turn on the TV. Polarizing ideas spur debates. Polarizing ideas generate conversation and lead to fresh ideas. Polarizing ideas change the world.  world.

Getting hate probably means you’re doing something right.

Ultimately, all of your content should be an extension of your life for this reason. You can steal all of these hacks. You can steal all of these methods but no one can steal being YOU. YOU. Take a moment to realize that your life story is unique. No one has ever experienced the same events you have in the exact same way . You have a unique story and it is your job to share it with the world.

Take action. Start the process and get writing w riting TODAY. TODAY.

All I ask is that you put your your heart and and soul into into it…

Best of luck,
