3.2

3.1.2

Minimum line size shall be 3/4" for process piping, 1/2" for process tubing, and 1/4“ for pneumatic tubing, except for connections at instruments, which shall be manufacturer's standard, unless otherwise specified on instrument specifications.

3.1.3

Cable material shall be in accordance with ESP-P-6882 and ESP-P- 6883.

Seals and Purges When necessary to prevent corrosive or solids bearing fluids from entering instruments, or instrument lines and process fluids from freezing or flushing, diaphragm type seals shall be given first consideration. Purges may be used in place of seals or heat tracing.

3.3

Field Pressure Testing Instrument installations shall be field pressure tested in accordance with ESP-P6970.

3.4

Electrical Testing Testing shall be in accordance with the specification “Electrical Installation”

4.0

DESIGN INSTALLATION 4.1

Field Instruments Location and Supports 4.1.1

All instruments shall be supported. Standpipes or other suitable means shall be used. Support brackets shall not be welded to process piping (except as required by piping stress analysis on high temperature steam lines), stress relieved or internally lined equipment.

4.1.2

Instrument accessibility shall be in accordance with the Accessibility Chart of this specification. Blind transmitting instruments shall be line mounted near the sensing point. Instruments shall not be line mounted when temperature or vibration from hydraulics or operating equipment will affect the operation of the instrument, or cause damage to instrument piping. 4.1.3

Instruments in gas service shall be mounted above the sensing point. Instruments in liquid and steam service shall be mounted below the sensing point. If accessibility, visibility or clearance requirements preclude either of these situations, provisions will be made in the instrument-piping configuration to insure proper operation of the instrument.

4.1.4

Recording and control instruments, except level controllers, shall be mounted remotely at grade or outside of platform handrails.

4.1.5

Remote mounted instruments shall be grouped and have common supports.

GENERAL INSTRUMENTATION SPECIFICATION INSTRUMENTATION

No. REV.

ESP-P-6940 1

Date: NOV-2000

Field Instruments Clearances Instruments shall be located to maintain clearances required for walkways, accessways and operation and maintenance of valves and equipment.

4.3

Field Instruments Piping Routing and Support 4.3.1

Instrument piping and tubing shall be routed through pipeways and areas dedicated for the routing of plant piping. Installation shall protect the piping from damage during plant operation and maintenance.

4.3.2

Instrument piping and tubing supports, shall be sufficient to maintain the piping and tubing in a neat manner. Pneumatic tubing shall be supported in raceways.

4.3.3

Access from permanent ladders shall be limited to those cases where plot or piping arrangement precludes locating the instrument to be accessible from grade or platform.

4.3.4

Instrument block valves at piping or equipment connections shall be accessible from grade, platform, stairway, or permanent ladder, except in a pipeway where all instrument block valves are considered accessible.

4.3.5

Indicating instruments which must be visible for automatic control adjustment or manual operation shall be visible from the adjustment or operating point. If plot or piping arrangement preclude this, other  provisions shall be made for indication at the adjustment or operating point. Indicating instruments which are not in the above category shall be visible from operating aisles or passageways.

4.3.6

Instrument piping and tubing shall be supported from pipe supports, pipe and any other permanent structure, except as follows: Instrument piping and tubing shall not be supported from pipe or pipe supports that would be subjected to excessive vibration, or from uninsulated hot (52oC (127°F) and above) or cold (5o C (41°F) and below) pipes. Instrument piping and tubing supports shall not be welded to process piping, stress relieved equipment or internally lined equipment.
