Acknowledgments Heartfelt thanks to my colleagues and friends who have contributed creatively to the exercises and techniques contained in this DVD. Their undying dedication to music education and performance excellence has made this DVD possible. To the master brass teachers who sparked my interests and fueled my mind I say “thank you” for your guidance and wisdom. To the Blue Devils D&B Corps I say “thank you” for a loving home to learn and prosper in, for without the support of the Blue Devils Parents Association, Jerry Seawright, Mike Moxley and David Gibbs my successes may never have been realized. To Jack Meehan whose musical talents, technical expertise and friendship were key in the creation and development of many of the teaching methods used by the Blue Devils today I say “thank you" for helping to create the very foundation of the Blue Devils brass technique program. In my 30 years with the Blue Devils I've had the privilege of working with many wonderful teachers who have played a major role in creating the Blue Devil Dynasty of Brass. To all of you I want say thank you for sharing a very special time in my life. I will cherish our times together and will live with the satisfaction that we did realize our dreams. This DVD is as much a tribute to your efforts as it is to the successes of our students…. Thank You!!! Finally, my sincere thanks go to my close friend and collaborator John Meehan. His creative guidance and tireless efforts in co-authoring this DVD have made the “Blue Devils Dynasty of Brass” a reality.

Directors Notes The most precious gift you can give your students is the knowledge that will enable them to play with a beautiful tone. That knowledge combined with a comprehensive understanding of brass technique will allow them the opportunity to succeed in the art of making music. To me, the art of making music is being unencumbered by technical hurdles so you can express and communicate freely your emotional involvement with the music you're performing to your audience. It is my hope that the information contained in this DVD will bring to light the techniques that have enriched the lives of so many of our Blue Devil brass players and given them the opportunity to experience the joy of making music. With an understanding that “tone” is our priority let's proceed. First and foremost, the student must have a basic understanding of how to take a full breath before attempting any of the exercises contained in this DVD. They must also understand that “air” is the fuel of a great sound and without it a characteristic tone quality cannot be achieved. They must always remember “air creates tone” and their ability to inhale and exhale in a relaxed, unrestricted and efficient manner is essential in producing that tone. Our next priority is teaching the student how to control the air that they breathe. With this in mind the student should be given information pertinent to the function of the lower abdominal muscles as they relate to the performers ability to regulate air pressure and the position (shape) of the tongue in the mouth cavity as it relates to the performers ability to regulate air speed. Once the basic concepts of varying air speed and air pressure are in place they students are well on their way to understanding the concept of controlling the air they breathe. Once the student understands how to vary both air speed and air pressure they must be given information on how those variations affect both tone and pitch. At this point the direct relationship between the frequency of the vibration of the tissue and air speed must be made. The student must understand that the faster the speed of the air passing through the lips the faster the tissue will vibrate producing a higher pitch, conversely the slower the vibration, the lower the pitch. Your more advanced students will be fascinated by the fact that the frequency of the vibration also affects the color of the tone. The faster the tissue vibrates on any given pitch the brighter the sound will be, the slower the vibration, the darker the sound will be on that same pitch.

4

After the student understands how to breath in a relaxed manner, vary their air pressure and air speed they need to be made aware of the relationship between the speed of the air, the frequency of the vibration of the tissue with the size of the aperture. It must be pointed out to the student that the speed of the air is not the only factor that controls pitch. The size of the vibrating surface also affects the speed of the vibration of the tissue. Assuming a constant air speed is traveling through the aperture the smaller the vibrating surface the faster the vibration will be, the larger the vibrating surface the slower the vibration will be. Hence the sharper or flatter the pitch or the brighter or darker the tone becomes. Simply stated, accurate control of pitch and tone color involves a coordinated effort between the speed of the air, the air pressure and the size of the aperture (the vibrating surface). Assuming that the student already understands how to change the speed of their air (by altering the shape of the tongue in the mouth cavity while increasing air pressure), the next step in the process is teaching your student how to vary the size of the aperture. I like to create the image (for the student) of the aperture gliding along what I call a laser beam of air (their air column) in a forward or backward motion towards or away from the throat of the mouthpiece. The motion of the aperture is controlled by the muscles of the face and is accompanied by the corners of the mouth moving in a similar manner (much like puckering your lips). The motion of the facial muscles should be very elastic and the condition of the tissue vibrating should be very supple. You should point out to the student that this type of motion will not only changes the size of the aperture but its location in the mouthpiece as well. The closer the aperture is to the throat of the mouthpiece the larger the size of the vibrating surface, the further away the aperture is from the throat of the mouthpiece the smaller the size of the vibrating surface. It should be thought of as a simple rolling motion. This motion will now serve as the technique we will use to vary the size of the aperture (the vibrating surface). The student should be encouraged to coordinate the speed of their air with their air pressure and with the size of the aperture to create the frequency of vibration necessary to produce a well centered tone. The student should also be cautioned that any unnecessary pressure from the mouthpiece (usually prompted by the hand) could impede the motion of the facial muscles can adversely affect their attempt to control pitch and tone color.

5

With that in mind it would be appropriate for you to discuss with the student the role the hands play on regulating pressure on the vibrating surface. Careful attention must be paid by the performer to evenly distribute the pressure of the mouthpiece on both the upper and lower lips to ensure even vibration of the tissue. Uneven distribution of pressure will adversely affect the students tone, pitch and flexibility. The student should also understand that there is a direct relationship between the pressure the mouthpiece exerts on the vibrating surface and the register of the instrument they're playing in. The higher the register the more pressure is desired and conversely the lower the register the less pressure is warranted. The hands must regulate these variations in pressure but at the same not impede the muscle motion. The exercises contained in this DVD have been designed to create a coordinated system of muscle motion that is both fluid and unrestricted. The performer should concentrate on synchronizing the motion of the aperture, tongue, lower abdominal muscles and hand for optimal physical and tonal development. The student must be aware of and memorize the physical sensations that they encounter when a beautiful tone is produced. They must strive to duplicate those same physical sensations repeatedly so their brain will learn to direct the muscle groups (muscle memory) to involuntarily take over the physical aspect of their performance to free their expressive and emotional self. Whatever you'd like to call this phenomenon, being in the zone or being on automatic pilot an incredible amount of dedication (hours of rehearsal) will be required to create that “natural sense” of muscle motion. The barometer of success of this method is without a doubt the student's quality of sound (tone). If the tone produced is not satisfactory then one or more of the elements of the system is out of balance and or being disregarded. The method relies on the student's knowledge of the system coupled with their ability to monitor their tone while making music. I hope you enjoy the “Dynasty of Brass” and reap the same successes that the Blue Devils have enjoyed for decades.

John M. Meehan John Meehan performed his first Trumpet recital at the age of 6 for the students of his Kindergarten class. At the age of 9, John became the first brass member of the Concord Blue Devils ‘C’ Corps. During the next ten years, John heavily concentrated on his playing skills as lead Trumpet in all school honor bands as well as Soprano soloist for the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps. It was during this time that John also got his first taste of composing and arranging doing work for high school cheer leading groups and marching bands. After touring Europe as the lead Trumpet soloist with the Los Medanos College Jazz Ensemble in 1990, John spent two years as a brass instructor with the D.C.I. Division 2 Champion Ventures Drum and Bugle Corps from Kitchener, Ontario Canada. John then went to the Santa Clara Vanguard where he worked the 1992 season with his father, DCI Hall of Fame member Jack Meehan. John took the next year off from teaching, although he did arrange his first two drum corps shows, and was married in the spring of 1993. John joined the brass staff of the Blue Devils in 1994 and has since helped them claim 4 D.C.I. World Championships and 6 Jim Ott High Brass Awards. John has also become the brass caption head and arranger for the two Blue Devil feeder corps and looks forward to continuing his success with the excellent Blue Devil organization well into the future. Outside of Johns active involvement with the Blue Devils, he spends much of his time as a composer/arranger and educator for numerous groups around the world. These groups include the Yamato and Yokohama Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps from Japan, the S.G.I. Performing Groups from Japan, the Northmont High School Marching Band from Dayton, Ohio and the reigning Western Band Association Champion James Logan High School Marching Band from Union City, California. John has composed the music for 2 CD’s based on the work of world famous artists WYLAND and Michael Maiden, as well as numerous film projects for current and graduated students at the Academy for the Arts College in San Francisco. John is continually trying to expand his original music talents and hopes to complete his first wind ensemble piece in the fall of 2004. John is an active endorser, clinician and arranger for DEG/Dynasty USA Music Products. John lives in Martinez, California with his beautiful wife Jackie and their two daughters Ashley and Katelyn.
