For nice even lighting, try to position the person/couple under some shade to avoid squinty eyes and harsh shadows. If you can’t find shade, position the subject so that the sun is hitting their back/shoulders at an angle while keeping the sun out of the frame of the shot. 2 Aim the center focus point at the person/couple and take a test shot. 3 If the face is too bright, rotate the main dial two clicks to the right. If the face is too dark, rotate the main dial two clicks to the left. Take another test shot and repeat Step 3 if needed. 4 Aim the center focus point at the eyes, half-press the shutter button to lock focus and fully press to shoot. 1

Half-press the shutter button to continuously focus on the subject as they move through the frame. 2 When ready, fully press the shutter and hold it down to fire off a burst of images. This will increase your odds of capturing a keeper. 3 If you have trouble focusing, switch the AF Mode to AI Focus, then set the AF point to Manual Selection and select the center focus point. Aim the center focus point at the subject, half-press the shutter button to lock focus and fully press to shoot. 4 If you notice subject blur, then increase the shutter speed to 1/1500.

If there isn’t any shade nearby, use a white bed sheet, an umbrella or poster board to soften the sunlight and cast some shade over the food/product. 2 Aim the center focus point at the food/product and take a test shot. 3 If the food/product is too bright, rotate the main dial two clicks to the right. If the food/product is too dark, rotate the main dial two clicks to the left. Take another test shot and repeat Step 3 until the food/product is well lit. 4 Aim the center focus point at the food/product, half-press the shutter button to lock focus and fully press to shoot. 1

For nice even lighting, try to photograph flowers and plants on a cloudy day. If shooting under full sun, look for subjects in the shade or shoot around sunrise/sunset. 2 Aim the center focus point at the subject, half-press the shutter button to lock focus and fully press to shoot. 3 If the intended subject is too dark or too bright, adjust the exposure compensation by pressing the +/- button and rotating the main dial at the same time. Rotate it to the left (- value) to darken the subject. Rotate it to the right (+ value) to brighten the subject. 4 If you have trouble focusing on your subject, you’re probably within the minimum focusing distance. Back up a bit and re-focus. 1

TRIPOD RECOMMENDED A tripod is recommended to capture an identical set of images with the same alignment for HDR processing. 2 Enable AEB (Menu button Select Expo.comp./AEB [2nd Menu Tab] SET Turn the main dial to set the AEB amount from -2 to +2) 3 Aim the camera towards the scene, half press the shutter button to lock focus and fully press to start the self-timer. The self-timer will count down and then fire off three images of the same scene at varying levels of exposure (normal, overexposed and underexposed). 4 Using HDR software (I recommend Photomatix or HDR Efex Pro), import the three photos and follow the on-screen instructions to process the set of images into a single HDR image. 1

The timer will count down a few seconds before taking the shot, allowing you to get your hands o the camera. 3 For smoother water, attach a Neutral Density (ND) filter. I recommend using a very dark 10 stop 3.0 ND filter. This will greatly reduce the amount of light coming through the lens, which will result in slower shutter speeds and silky smooth waterfalls/streams.
